rabbibloch@cbiboca.org Twelve years ago when I was living in Indiana, I took guitar lessons. I had a wonderful teacher who taught me a tremendous amount about the guitar in a very short time. Even more importantly, he taught me to not give up (and believe me there were times I wanted to—especially with other time commitments), and he really pushed my creative side by helping me write a few songs.

FriendsI was recently advised of a conversation between a congregant and a lay leader that was terribly upsetting. I wish I didn't have to share this with you but I feel compelled to do so. It is my hope and prayer that what you glean from this message, is the reality that no successful relationship and certainly, no temple/congregant relationship can endure unless both parties are committed to its success.

Rabbi Marci R. Bloch

Shortly after studying with him, I moved to Florida and, unfortunately, I stopped playing guitar. Over the years I have thought often about this teacher. Last year when I went to Indiana, I stopped at the guitar shop where he had worked to say hello, but sadly he was no longer there. A few months ago, just before the High Holy Days, I decided to spend a little time trying to track him down. I learned that he now owns his own studio, and I gave him a call. When he answered the phone, I’ll admit, it was a little awkward—after all it had been twelve years! But I helped him recall our sessions, and then I told him that I had called just to thank him for being one of the best teachers I have ever had. Have you ever thought about all the people in your life who have taught you? Who were they? Were they actually teachers? Were they coaches? Parents? Bosses? Friends? Cab drivers? Strangers? All of us have had so many teachers in our lives. Some taught us basic skills and some had a much more profound impact on our lives. Judaism teaches us to acknowledge and give honor to the teachers who have influenced us. In fact, every day in our morning prayers we say a prayer for the teachers who have taught us. It is called Kaddish D’ Rabbanan. The English translation in our prayerbook is not exact, but it is really beautiful: For our teachers and their students, And the students of the students, We ask for peace and lovingkindness, And let us say, Amen. And for those who study Torah Here and everywhere, May they be blessed with all they need, And let us say, Amen. We ask for peace and lovingkindness, and let us say, Amen. As we begin the secular New Year, I ask you to start with a mitzvah. Think about someone who taught you something in your life, whether formally or informally, and find a way to thank that person. Call or send a note to someone who really helped shape you and thank that person for helping you to become who you are. May 2015 be full of many mitzvot and acts of kindness for you and yours.

You all know that CBI was founded and has endured on the fundamental principal that we will never turn someone away for lack of funds. I spoke about this on Rosh Hashanah and again on Yom Kippur. It’s who we are. And so we do everything, and I truly mean everything, to ensure that our members remain affiliated with our holy community, particularly when they are experiencing financial setbacks and difficulties. It’s what we do. And, we do it with respect. We do it with dignity. We are not always perfect and I acknowledge that, but I promise we are trying to be as perfect in this regard as we possibly can. Friends, there may be a perception in the community at large or even within our congregational community, that CBI is “well off”. A perception that “ the temple has plenty of money, so there is no need for me to pay dues even though CBI agreed to an arrangement when I needed it and asked for it.” That my friends, was the comment made to a lay leader who reached out with concern to a congregant. Considering the efforts we make to embrace and retain our members, that comment was unfair. In a perfect world, CBI would require no fundraising events. Our programming would be free to all members. The President would not be required to make an annual Kol Nidre Appeal and the clergy would not have to carve out time from their necessary work to meet with families and ask for major gifts. But that is not our reality. Of course, our doors are not closing. But the perception that “CBI has plenty of money” is both untrue and a simple reality we must all understand. Like every congregation in Boca and beyond, times are challenging and we rely on the commitments of our congregants to endure and hopefully, soon, to prosper once again. I am confident, that with hard work and respect for each other, we will achieve that prosperity. I know and trust the character of our congregants, the focus of our staff, the commitment of our clergy and the dedication and love for CBI demonstrated day in and day out by our lay leaders. Facing the realities of our current environment, as difficult as it may be, is the foundation upon which to plan and build for our collective future. We are all in this together. Best, Gary

From The Desk Of...

Sharon Wagman Executive Director sharon@cbiboca.org

Have you ever thought about the word “happiness”? For me, there are certain things that make me happy, such as spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, or reading a good book. However, I never really sat down and thought about the meaning of the word “happiness” and what constitutes true happiness. On November 13, as part of our CBI Speaker Series, Deepak Chopra spoke to nearly sixteen hundred members and guests on the topic of happiness. In his talk, entitled, The Future of Well-Being, Deepak pondered, “what are thoughts, where do they come from, and what is happiness?” Judging by the volumes of phone calls and emails we have received, people were extremely moved by his thoughts and philosophy of happiness. Deepak spoke of a formula for happiness- H=S+C+V. The percentages are fascinating. He said that S, your “set-point” of the brain, which we know as attitude, accounts for 40% of a person’s happiness. C, which are your conditions of living, such as whether you are financially poor or rich, account for close to 12%, and V, which are the voluntary choices we make, account for 40%. So what do we equate happiness with in the United States? According to Deepak, shopping and entertainment are at the top, with food & wine and sex in the number 2 and 3 spots respectively. However, these “things” do not translate to lasting happiness. This is what really got me thinking. He said that close to 40% of your happiness can include other choices, such as those that give meaning and purpose to our lives, like when we express our creativity or when we help others. At CBI, a huge part of our mission is social action. Through our Kantor Family Center for Justice, we offer programs throughout the year that give meaning to our members lives and to others in the community. Helping the community can bring you happiness. Whether you get involved in Grow to Give, Feed The Hungry, Mitzvah Day or any of the many programs we offer, your life will be filled with more happiness, which Deepak told us is also good for your health. He said the fastest way to be happy is to make others happy with “Attention, Affection, Appreciation, and Acceptance.” As Deepak led the audience through a powerful mediation, I thought about the word ‘happiness’. And as I asked myself, “who am I? What is my purpose?”, I found myself focusing on our CBI mission of social action and how much more we can all give to our community to live the true meaning of the word, ‘happiness.’ Deepak said that if you have one happy person in your life and that person has one happy person in his or her life and that person has another happy person in his or her life, continuing on and on, that will actually lead to happiness. If we all work together to help others

and bring happiness to their lives, which will bring happiness to their families, and maybe even their friends, and so on and so on, think about how much happiness we can bring to our own lives and the community. At CBI, we strive to bring you meaningful and interesting speakers who help provide happiness. Last year, we were honored to host Dr. Maya Angelou. This year Dr. Deepak Chopra, and on December 10, cartoon editor of The New Yorker magazine, Bob Mankoff. His humorous point of view on a variety of topics, from politics to religion to culture is read world-wide and sure to provide happiness. We hope you will join us for his talk where the winner of his Cartoon Caption Contest will be announced. We will also give you more information on how you can bid on an original Mankoff cartoon, personalized just for you. Join us at each of our CBI Speaker events and our stimulating CBI Talks Adult Learning programs, the wonderful Nagle Family Jewish Film Festival films, and our amazing music and spirituality programs with Cantor Shore and other guest lecturers. Please go to www.cbiboca.org/cbitalks to sign up. We sold out for Deepak Chopra and we want you to be able to attend our events. You can also call the office for information at 561-241-8118. We thank you for supporting our Speaker Series initiative and for helping to bring Deepak Chopra to Boca Raton. Many of you have offered sponsorships. This is greatly appreciated. Also, for those of you, who in addition to ticket purchases, checked off that donation box on the Vendini ticket site and voluntarily added a donation, we thank you. We are now planning for next year where our goal is to offer the most thought-provoking, meaningful and topical speakers to this community. We hope you will participate and join us. Thank you so much for all you do to help CBI and enable us to bring the most exciting speakers to our community.

Did You Know...?

This year, Congregation B’nai Israel celebrates its 30th Anniversary. We have a rich and vibrant 30-year history of providing opportunities for you to worship, celebrate, and learn with one another. We have shared in your good times and in your bad, in your joy and in your pain. We are your home away from home. We love that you are a part of our proud history and we want you to also be a part of our exciting future. With that in mind, we introduce our “Did You Know…?” campaign. CBI is filled with amazing staff, generous donors, and exciting programs for you to get involved in and we want you to know about them!

About Barrie Brett

About CBI Talks

Barrie Brett is our Director of CBI Talks/Speaker Series. Working closely with and under the direction of executive director, Sharon Wagman, Barrie helped develop, research, book guests and supervise activities related to launching our Speaker Series last year and continues overseeing meaningful speakers this year. “Being part of our CBI Speaker Series has been a labor of love; I am grateful to staff and committee members who help make the events special.” What you may not know is that Barrie also has a thirtyyear career as an Emmy Award-winning television producer, having produced a variety of projects, from commercials and features to celebrity interviews, PBS documentaries and lifestyle programming. Barrie is a former teacher and a published author. Her book, Moments Of Being…Finding Your One Moment In Time, shares true stories of lives changed by one pivotal moment. “I’m passionate about the possibility of such life-changing moments.” Having developed customer training programs across the country, Barrie believes strongly in making members and guests feel welcome at each event. “I feel fortunate to work with Sharon and such a supportive team. I truly believe we have the best volunteers in the entire world who help make our events happen.”

At Congregation B’nai Israel, we are fortunate to have wonderful programming. Our CBI Talks series brings a variety of educational and informative programs to our community. CBI Talks encompasses our Speaker Series, the Nagle Family Jewish Film Festival, Conversations with our Rabbis and other esteemed scholars, adult and spiritual learning opportunities, as well as cultural programs involving music, art, theater, and more.

This year we have already heard from three provocative and intriguing speakers, Mosab Hassan Yousef, Deepak Chopra, and Rabbi Dukhovny. We look forward to hosting Bob Mankoff on the December 10, and hope everyone joins in on the fun and enters our Cartoon Caption Contest. We screened the film Walk on Water to great acclaim and will host writer and director, Paul Saltzman, for the screening of The Last White Knight on December 4. Our Adult Learning courses are very popular, and we encourage you to go online and register for the upcoming classes. SpiritJEWality with Cantor Shore was a huge success, so make sure to sign up for the sessions in February and April before they’re all booked up as well. Spiritual Exercise with Gail Sack begins in January. Our musical programs are fun and family friendly and our Adult book club is thought-provoking and exciting. We look forward to seeing you all at these wonderful events and can’t wait to show you what’s in store for 2015-16! For more information or to sign up for CBI Talks, please go to www.cbiboca.org/cbitalks or contact Elaine Reiner at bubbe05@comcast.net or 865-4273.

Annette Sauve joined our CBI family in 2012 and states, “it’s the best thing I ever did.” Annette feels that CBI is like a second home and gives so much of herself to make it that way for so many others. Annette volunteers for many different programs including the Speaker Series and the High Holy Days. From stuffing envelopes and making phone calls, to ushering at events and assisting the administrative staff, Annette does it all. Annette also lends a hand at the baby center, loving and caring for our littlest members, sings in the choir, and chairs our 55+ singles group. Annette loves to attend our Friday night services and is a part of our Women’s Torah Study Group. Annette is a joy to be around and we are so grateful for all that she does for CBI. Cbi Talks...NAGLE FAMILY JEWISH Film festival Thursday, December 4, 7:00 pm Zimmerman Family North Social Hall

This courageous film, written and directed by Paul Saltzman, was inspired by an incident that took place during the early 1960s when Paul journeyed to the Deep South as a civil rights worker to help with voter registration in Mississippi. One of the first days he was there, he was assaulted by a group of young members of the Ku Klux Klan. Decades later, Saltzman returns to the south to meet with his assailant Byron “Delay De La Beckwith and see if personal reconciliation is possible. Running Time: 78 minutes Paul Saltzman will lead the discussion.

Thursday, January 8, 7:00 pm Zimmerman Family North Social Hall

Dan chooses to work on the land, living in a kibbutz in the South of Israel. Aaron, his brother is a doctor of law and philosophy and a distinguished scholar of the Torah. He comes to Jerusalem from the United States to defend the rights of Torah students. The conflict which arises between the two brothers reflects that of a society torn between its religious and political principles. With restrictions and injustices multiplying, Israel today is on the brink of civil war. This film opens a subtle yet essential debate on the question of separation of the state and religion in Israel. Running time 116 minutes Rabbi Robert Silvers will lead the disussion.

Save the Dates:

Thursday, February 5 Cantor Shore will lead the discussion.

Thursday, March 12 Barrie Brett will lead the discussion.

Thursday, April 16 Rabbi Bloch will lead the discussion.

No cost to members. $10 per person for non-members. Tickets will be available at the door. Sponsored by the Nagle Family.
