It really is that time of year, the time when families and loved ones return home and are reunited to celebrate the season. And thanks to the Sagunto Association USA, the celebration has become more festive. Through the Barangay Sagunto Grand Balikbayan Homecoming families have the chance to spend quality time together all the while making new memories that will stay with them no matter where they go.
This is the time to spend with loved ones and family. It is the perfect time to show those closest to us how much we love and care for them. It is a time to show how thankful we are for our families.
The Sagunto Association USA deserves thanks for putting together this Homecoming and for giving families an opportunity to come together and enjoy themselves through the many planned activities. Remember that no matter how far apart you are, no matter where in the world, you will always be a family, and this will always be your home.

A Brief Message on the history, mission and vision, and some of the past activities and projects of the Sagunto Association, U.S.A. History: In March 2003, at the Los Angeles, CA residence of Mrs. Virginia Bongog Pasibe Simpson, after the funeral of her husband Mr. Walter Simpson, families, friends, relatives from Sagunto decided to organize themselves and form an association. On the memorial weekend of May 25, 2003, another reunion was held at Florendo’s residence in Loma Linda Ca., where the Sagunto Association USA was formally organized with 27 families represented. More meetings were later held at the Annaguey, Cajala, and Tudayan residences. During the Mar 25, 2003 the following agenda was approved. 1.) Confirmed the election of officers voted at the impromptu meeting In Los Angeles, CA. 2.) To establish the associations, rules, regulations and by-laws. 3.) Approved an annual membership fee of $25.00 for each family household. Mission: To unite all the families living in the U.S.A. whose roots are from Sagunto who desire to join regardless of creed, religion, nationality or citizenship. To organize ourselves so that in the future we can be of better help to each other in times of tragedy, and other times we need help morally, financially and spiritually, and most especially to love and comfort each other in times of need. Vision: For us who are privileged to work in the United States of America, it is our dream to realize our goals, to improve our lives and enjoy a better life style. But let us not forget our beloved folks at home in the Philippines, to share what we have. We want to be of better service, improve the health condition of our people, and improve the environmental condition of our community.

Some of the association’s past activities: a.) Collection of membership fees. b.) Selling of uniforms as a fund raiser for the association. Irene Florendo, Cristy Tudayan, Regina Quilop, Arsenia Gomez, Lilia Quilaman & Caroline Florendo-Spoerl did the sales with the proceeds going to the association’s fund. c.) Picnic spearheaded by Lily Sipus, Vangie Sipus Berto, Cristy, and Regina during a July 4th celebration. d.) Garage/yard sales by Lily, Regina, Remy Baiguen Pagala with proceeds donated to the organization. e.) ‘Ang Lola Kong Reyna’ participation during the 2008 Sison town fiesta. I was fortunate to represent the association and be the 2nd Princess of the ‘Ang Lola Kong Reyna’ celebration. The association helped me raise approximately ₱300,000 PHP. The ₱30,000 PHP commission I received was donated back to our Sagunto local churches that accepted the donation. Projects: Together with the other Sagunto Organizations abroad, the Sagunto Association USA, has donated funds to Sagunto projects, specifically the improvement of the water system. Reorganization: Last June 18, 2011 another reunion was held at the Eleno Annaguey’s residence. Since most of the association members were present, and due to my creeping old age and poor health after a surgey, I requested the members to please have a re-election of officers. It was also during this meeting that the association accepted the challenge and privilege of organizing the 2012 2nd Barangay Sagunto Balkbayan Grand Homecoming. Last December before Christmas, another meeting was held at Boying’s residence to plan the next Sagunto Balikbayan reunion in December 2012. Saguntonians from Northern California (Joe & Edna Cabras, Daniel and Divina Pascua, Jovita Pascua-Amor) made the long drive to join us in the meeting. I was very happy to welcome all of them. A series of meetings have been held to plan the 2012 Balikbayan Grand Reunion at the residence of members(Ben & Gladys Sipus-Basabas in Loma Linda, CA and at Lita Dapiaoen-Salva’s residence in Antelope, CA). It is amazing and refreshing to know that the younger generations are very interested to continue the mission of the Sagunto Association, U.S.A., and for that reason I am forever grateful. A Brief History of Sagunto UK Association
As early as the nineteen seventies a few Saguntonians came to London in search of green pastures. Their fact-finding adventure proved to be a godsend in a number of ways for the early settlers. The financial uplift they sent back home made it possible for their families to obtain higher education, build better houses and start small businesses to give them better lives. However, ease did not come without pains to the frontiersmen, some of them were taken ill, others died untimely deaths. But in times like this, Saranay (self-help) legacy inherited from home came into play. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Bestoyong solicited small contributions from willing members of the group to help the less fortunate barrio mates. That started the organization of the unnamed group to prepare for any event that may come. In June 1977 this family group was formally organized, to give it a name and structure – the Sagunto Toilers of London. Officers were elected, although it was purely a self-help family group with no political ambitions attached. Members agreed to donate one week’s wages every year to provide a revolving fund for the newly formed Sagunto Toilers. When funds became available years after its format set up, the members of the Sagunto Toilers negotiated with the then Barrio council to concrete the road connecting the Barrio to the national highway with Sagunto Toilers providing the necessary funds and the Barrio the labour. Years rolled on with sets of officers elected every two years to give everyone a chance to lead the association. Membership increased UK-wide so the need to name the Sagunto United Kingdom Association. Hong Kong, American, and Italian Sagunto groups got involved in the construction of the new water system. Sagunto UK Association extended invitations to the Canadian group, but we could appreciate that this group had their own agenda for Sagunto, which is why they are not in our records. In addition to the two big projects – Barrio road and the new water system, Sagunto UK Association was also involved in the small projects that were appropriate and needed by the people. Unfortunately, the names of the officers and name of this association could not be printed on billboards, believing that the hearts of the people of Sagunto are open books for all of us to read. We can just proudly say that Sagunto UK Association must roll on working with our people. It will do us proud to see our Barrio people happy.

Greetings to all our folks in Sagunto, balikbayans and guests! Once again it is time for another barangay fiesta; once again we have been ‘busy bees’ preparing for this yearly event – an excuse to have fun together as one big happy family. This time round, the Second Grand Homecoming, it is the turn of the Sagunto Assoc, USA to organise this event. Perhaps the Third Grand Homecoming will be organised by the SFAL! Sagunto UK Association were the organisers for the very successful inaugural Grand Homecoming in 2008. We the Sagunto UK Association would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Sagunto Assoc, USA for hosting this year’s homecoming. We know what a mammoth task it is to organise such an event, so we salute you all. We have come home to show our support to this worthy cause. I have known and heard of other Filipinos living abroad who have formed similar groups in support of their hometown, but what makes Sagunto different is that there are three organisations supporting their community back home. I believe we have become a model to other Filipino expatriates. This is what makes Sagunto unique. 2011–2012 has been a busy period for the Sagunto UK Association. We have found two new sister groups, made new friends and gained new members. The new sister groups are the Kalinga Plus and the Benguet UK. We too have re-established our friendship with the Igorot UK and have found friendship with the Bontoc, Kalinga, Tadian and other groups that come under the umbrella of Cordillera. We have shown our support to each other by way of mutual reciprocation. The SUKA group has been meeting regularly to discuss matters regarding the association. We meet at members’ homes, sometimes in hired venues but during the summer we meet at a particular spot in Hyde Park. Meeting in the park provides a different atmosphere; it gives us a chance to have a picnic in the open, an opportunity to wind down after a long working week! The only snag is, we depend on the weather, it is England after all! We also organise trips to the seaside for fresh, bracing sea air, which helps to blow the cobwebs away! On behalf of the Group, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Henry and Grace (Mr and Mrs Palit-ang), for their generosity in opening their home so often for meetings. Also to Pepe and Jo (Mr and Mrs Pis-o), Dencio and Lydia (Mr and Mrs Capuyan), Lisa (Mrs Olivares) for making their homes available for meetings. The joy of meeting in different homes is that each has their own specialty dish. May I also thank the entire membership of SUKA for their support to the organisation, your unfailing support contributes toward the success of this organisation. SFAL THE FRIENDLY ASSOCIATION SFAL - The Sagunto Friendship Association, is a UK-based, non-profit, non-partisan and non-religious organization founded in March of 2006. Its main purpose is to identify viable projects to improve and enhance the quality life of people in Barangay Sagunto. Each project would be scrutinized by all members to ensure that the money raised would be used wisely and the project would be to the benefit of the many and not just a chosen few. Projects: The Search for the Ang Lola Kong Reyna. What plans did you make in the run up to this year’s Sison Town Fiesta? Watch a program at the town plaza? Possibly. Prepare food for your expected guests? Most likely. Raise P560,000.00? You probably won’t consider that within the realms of possibility if given short notice. Neither did SFAL, but raise it did. The year was 2007, when SFAL was less than two years old, and the event was our town fiesta where the association raised P560,000.00 enabling its member and our kabarangayan, Mrs. Tessie Castillo Alboukharey, to reign as the town’s “Ang Lola Kong Reyna”. The Barangay Library. The Sagunto library, a cherished dream, was inaugurated in January 2009. Funded by SFAL and constructed within one and a half months, its books and furnishings were generously provided by Saguntonians from London and America. The Women’s Association of Sagunto, the Sangguniang Kabataan and volunteers all helped during the library inauguration. It has been used by the Barangay Council and Kabataang Barangay for their meetings, by students studying from different Universities, children and adults alike. There is a continuous need for more books and computers; any donations will be gratefully accepted. The Construction of Water Source Catch Basin in Pilawan – This project was a joint venture by SFAL & SUKA and was completed in the year 2009. The water from this source will combine with the old water source resulting to more supply of water for the people of Sagunto. The Refurbishment of the Sagunto Health Center – Again this is a joint project by the two active associations SFAL & SUKA based in London. The funding available for this project was 20,000.00 pesos and the construction is currently under way. Provided Reflective Luminous Yellow Vests for the Barangay Tanods – Vests provided to be used by the Barangay Tanods on duty specially when on patrol at night and also used while directing traffic on parade. SFAL’s Drive to Sponsor a Child This Christmas at Pilawan School – SFAL helps the less fortunate and needy young people and their families in Pilawan school. Individual members went further by volunteering to buy shoes and clothes for the children. One member was so overwhelmed by what happened to the father of one child that the member has pledged to buy a sack of rice to be sent to this family in Pilawan. Community Involvement and Support – SFAL aims to promote greater solidarity and cooperation with our Local Officials; hence the links with the Bago Tribe Association-Sagunto Chapter, the Samahang Ilocano Kabagis, the Sagunto Women’s Association, the Sangguniang Kabataan Sagunto and other organizations and communities in Pangasinan. To assist in the promotion of camaraderie, sportsmanship, teamwork and the enhancement of talents in competitions, SFAL has given financial support to the Samahang Ilocano Kabagis, to the Sangguniang Kabataan and to the Sagunto Council. 1 Organized by the Sagunto Association, USA.

Donations - There were donations given to different organizations in the country such as cash prizes in sports competitions, trophies, sound system, etc. Beneficiaries included the Barangay Council, the Kabataang Barangay, and others. Overall, the total monies spent on good causes, projects and donations according to our book of records since the founding of the association in 2006 came to over 800,000.00 pesos. This amount includes the monies raised for the “Ang Lola Kong Reyna” during the 2007 Sison town fiesta. Funding - The main source of SFAL funding is its membership contributions. Activities – The association has various activities such as its annual Christmas carol, Valentine and Christmas parties and trips. These activities also serve as additional fundraisers. The spontaneous generosity towards SFAL’s causes is both surprising and touching as evidenced one winter evening when SFAL went to Watford, a town 29 kilometres northwest of Central London, to sing Christmas carols to the only household in the area it knew. After the singing, and on the same night, the house owner rang other Filipinos in Watford. The SFAL singers went to these unexpected houses, thus multiplying the expected donations for that evening. Fund-raising trips are also organised. In a summer trip to the English seaside town of Margate, there were so many mussels collected, the day-trippers could hardly carry them home! During SFAL’s most recent party, held in September 2012, entrance tickets were £10 each. The food was donated by individual members to save on catering expenses. Prizes for the night’s raffle draw like iPhone bases were also solicited to maximise fund collection. Contributions like these enabled SFAL to send three boxes to the Pilawan School, expected to arrive in time with the school’s Christmas 2012 activities. The same generous spirit helped towards the building of the school’s toilet. Cooperation with other UK organizations - SFAL requests cultural dance participation from other Filipino organisations in the UK. Cooperation has been sought with other UK organisations like Igorot UK, the Filipino Association Epsom, the Sagunto UK Association, the Camileneos Association and many more. Future Plans - Future plans include the modernisation of the Sagunto library, the purchase of a community sound system, wider geographical membership, and for 2012, sponsoring children from the Pilawan Elementary school. It is our fervent hope that through this article we have given you an initial outline of SFAL, and have a better understanding of the association’s objectives, aims, mission, vision, and its accomplishments. While you are in Sagunto for the balikbayan grand homecoming, we encourage you to come and visit the Barangay Sagunto Library, one of the association’s accomplishments. If you share our commitment, goal, mission and vision, we would like to hear from you. Your suggestions or comments on how SFAL can serve the community better are most welcome. A PHILIPPINE ENIGMA BY AN ENGLISHMAN By Tony Brownlow As a school boy back in war-torn Coventry I read a large book at home because rain stopped me from going out to play. I was fascinated by a large picture of a farmer in a far away land of the Philippines. It was of a man wearing a large white sombrero and neatly dressed as he walked behind a carabao tilling the rice field. But the enigma was, He was a white man. Not black which I assumed would be the case in a tropical country. Years later after delay leaving the war in Korea, fate ruled that instead of returning to England via the usual troopship from Japan, by courtesy of the Royal Air Force, I was a passenger on a two-engined Valetta Plane to Singapore. This required refueling three times. The first stop was at night time end of May 1953, lightning was around, and the humidity told me we were in the middle of a jungle. I asked where on earth we are, and a woman’s voice out of the darkness said "This is the Philippines". We continued our journey via Saigon and Hong Kong to Singapore, But it was then I remembered my childhood Enigma of a farmer in large white sombrero who himself was white. How could this be!!! Some 50 years on after my Irish wife died I re-married and of all people a PHILIPPINE wife Helen Luisa. Of course my enigma was about to be answered. We built a lovely home on the lower point of a range of mountains. We have a wonderful view over-looking SAGUNTO which I now call home. Having seen nothing back in 1953, we now see plenty. Below is Sagunto and to the south, some 30 miles of flat lands growing rice and various vegetables. Not to speak of amazing fruits of every kind. We grow our own bananas, mangos and the largest and sweetest of fruit, the jackfruit. Yes, the Philippines is rich in fruits from banana to coconut, from mango, papayas and to every kind of fruit. Our lovely mountain neighbours grow a selection of vegetables which we always buy to relieve the load on their head. No one could starve to death in this land of plenty. Even weddings and funerals provide for every uninvited guests that choose to appear. Impressing are those young men who volunteer to make canopies, "sapaw", of bamboo and canvas to extend shade from the sun or rain to all who arrive as guests. Oh, the ingenuity of Baguio builders who create homes on the sides of mountains. The Ilocano Song and dance "Dayang Dayang" I love. Our London Association "Sagunto Friendship Association of London� and others makes sure of funding Sagunto barrio for special projects such as a small library, water supply, etc. I read history and the past of Spanish and American influence has sorted out my Philippine Enigma. Greetings!!! Thinking of my childhood in our Barangay Sagunto, I often feel like rewinding the time machine to go back to revive those golden years of my life. Yes, I remember those days playing in the plaza going to laud having fun with friends. Those things leave behind such a deep impression that it is difficult to forget for the rest of my life. As we go forward, our priorities changed due to our commitment with our present family and friends. However, if we wish to stay connected with old friends, re-union is the answer? Seeing old friends somehow alleviates the present hustle bustle of our lives. Reunion re-ignites the past and revives old friendship. I enjoy being around with people who are proud of who they are and where they came from. I had glorious and joyful memories of the past. Sagunto is a small barrio and full of life. It is secure, safe and togetherness is common. I say thank you to the sponsor and to the organizers of this re-union. Have a happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. 28 years of blissful marriage
It is a pleasure for me to share to everyone that I am blessed with a loving and responsible husband, Arman Pascua and I've been married to him for almost 28 years. We are blessed to have 4 wonderful children namely Bryanth Joseph (married to Maricar), Gilbert, and my 2 lovely twins Argie Lyn and Virginia. Our children are the most precious gifts from God and we their parents are doing our best to give them the best life. One of the most greatest experience that we had was to live in Italy for 16 years and year 2010 when we migrated in United States except for our son Bryanth. I can say that we are showered with so much love from our children and countless blessings from our God. We are very much excited to reunite with our family and friends back in the Philippines if we are given the chance. Again,we would like to say thank you for this opportunity and may our Lord God continue to bless each and everyone of us.
