A Letter from the Principal Dear Families and Friends, It is with great joy that I write to you as the new principal of Christ the King School! As you already know, our school is a very special place, with dedicated faculty and staff, committed parents and parish community, and a wonderful student body all working together to fulfill our school mission. The COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on many events throughout the last school year, but with the steady leadership of Mrs. Woodman and the fortitude of the faculty, staff, students, and parents, the last year was a resounding success. We opened the 2021-2022 school year in early August continuing to navigate the pandemic, but also hopeful for the return of many of our cherished traditions that bind our past, present, and future together. While there have been hiccups along the way, I am happy to share that the 2021-2022 school year has had a terrific start.

The faculty and staff chose the theme “We Are Called” in late spring to set the tone for the new year. This theme has served as a guide for our entire community to remember our true purpose as we continue to experience turbulence and difficulties created by the pandemic. Our students and faculty live Christ’s call on a daily basis throughout the school in ways big and small. It is visible when the Sixth, Seventh, or Eighth-grade students tenderly care for their Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, or First-grade Buddies during Mass or other Buddy events. It is visible when classmates treat each other with dignity and respect in the classroom, lunchroom, or playground. It is visible when we care for our broader community. Our whole school has taken to heart the multitude of ways we are called to live as Christ, to be His hands doing His will, loving each other as Christ loved us. As you enjoy this issue of The Sceptre, I leave you with the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John, to inspire in you the same confidence we had as we started this school year:
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another. Sincerely in Christ,

Our Academic and End of the Year Award Ceremonies were held outside this year, and were full of good news about our students. Seventeen students received scholarships totalling about $38,000. Students in 3rd-8th grades were recognized for honor roll and principal’s list status throughout the year and Catholic Math League. We also recognized Brian Knoop as the 2021 recipient of the Teacher Award of Excellence. The Mary Ann (Neuhoff) Sullivan Legacy Scholarship, was established in 2018 in memory of Mary Ann ‘75, by her husband, George. The scholarship is based on exemplification of a Christian spirit, modeling Christ in behavior towards classmates, faculty and staff, both in and out of the classroom, kindness and gentleness, with a “spirit of generosity.” The recipent is also given a cross made from the original gym floor. We are proud to announce good news about Steven. Steven, a senior at Father Ryan High School, has been recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar and as a National African American Recognition Program Scholar by the College Board. Steven is taking four AP courses this year, including studies in AP English Literature and AP Calculus BC, and he completed six additional AP courses in his sophomore and junior years. His classroom work has earned him membership in the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

CKS is researching VEX Robotics to add to our curriculum. If you would like to consider a contribution towards the purchase of two age-appropriate units - one for the elementary grades and one for middle school, please consider a gift to our Robotics Fund. Robotics are fundamental in teaching and inspiring our young minds by the excitement of hands-on, minds-on STEM learning and the feeling of creating something with technology. Educational robots will help our teachers integrate STEM learning in novel ways. It will also allow our students to develop computational thinking, to become comfortable with iteration, and learn about careers in the future. We also welcome anyone with experience in Robotics that would like to participate to please contact the school at 615-292-9465.

Julie Murphy ‘04 married Jacob Mondelli on March 6, 2021 at Cathedral of the Incarnation. Julie teaches kindergarten at St. Rose of Lima in Murfreesboro. Stephen Stejkskal ‘10 married Anna Laws on June 5, 2021 at Covenant Presbyterian in Birmingham, AL. They met while attending Auburn University, where they both graduated in May 2018. After honeymooning on the West Coast, they returned to the home they purchased in Atlanta near Grant Park. Stephen works as a financial analyst for Home Depot, and Anna teaches sixth grade science at a charter school in the Grant Park Neighborhood.
