The Los Angeles Center of Photography is dedicated to supporting photographers and the photographic arts. LACP provides high-caliber classes, local and travel workshops, exhibitions, screenings, lectures, and community outreach efforts, including grants, need-based scholarships, and focused programming for youth and low-income families.

Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, Over the last 15 years, we have produced 29 catalogs. The kind of catalog that you could hold and look through and flip the pages. But now with the savvy on-line world, we have made a big decision. We will not be producing a paper catalog any longer, but rather this on-line catalog. You can flip through it too, as the pages turn. One year has passed since we transitioned into the Los Angeles Center of Photography, with one milestone after another. We moved to a new specially-designed location. We had a grand opening and first members’ exhibition. We held a silent auction fund raiser with 167 prints. We hosted many guest speakers, offered 150 classes and a few contests, and worked on developing new plans to benefit our members and photo community. An exciting new development is LACP’s collaboration with several Boys & Girls Clubs. We’re sending LACP instructors to the Clubs to teach kids camera basics and how to document their own lives. There will be an annual exhibit at LACP to show off this work. We have new opportunities for members, including an on-line gallery on LACP’s website, where we will post one person’s portfolio per month. In addition, we have plans to post members’ news online once our new website is in place (which will be soon), as well as produce a “Members’ Quarterly” publication. The more money we raise, the more we can do! We have big plans. We hope you will be part of them. You can start by becoming a LACP member so we can keep you abreast of our ever-expanding array of opportunities. Light, shadow, night and twilight are the building blocks of photography, a term that literally means, “to write with light.” These are the tools award-winning photographer David H. Wells uses to make photo-essays exploring the light and atmosphere of places such as train stations, religious shrines and city centers. In this fun and explorative workshop, David will teach students the most effective way of incorporating light, shadow, night and twilight in their image-making to produce unique characteristics and extraordinary results.

A masterpiece is the result of an artist’s individual authentic genius. That authenticity creates presence–the key element of an authentic masterpiece–and the final result of light working on the forms of an object or scene. The Black and White Master Print revives the idea of masterpiece. In this workshop students will use the tools and workflow in Lightroom and Photoshop that mines the intricacies of presence, the fundamental characteristic of a masterpiece.

After the Basics: Intermediate Photography

In this beginning workshop, students will learn all the controls and functions on their digital SLR’s (Single Lens Reflex), basic camera operation (including f-stop, shutter speed and ISO), fundamental concepts of photography and how to control the photograph’s final look. Discussions include composition and light, how to get the background in or out of focus, how to stop or blur motion, why to use one ISO over another, how to use the camera’s light meter to provide the best exposure, and more.

In this sequential class to Basic Photography, students will receive reinforcement on the concepts from the previous class and push toward the next level of photographic expression. Emphasis will be on image capture while practicing sound technical fundamentals. In this workshop, students will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. After technical discussion on the buttons and dials on the flash, the day is divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use a flash. In this workshop, students will discover ways to find and utilize beautiful ambient light as a powerful photographic tool. Next Step 1 with Aline Smithson

This eight-month class is the Los Angeles Center of Photography “master” class. It is designed for serious photographers who are interested in creating a significant personal project. Students will work toward creating a strong, cohesive body of work that will culminate in LACP’s biggest exhibition of the year, an exhibit that will showcase in both galleries for a month-long run.

In this unique and insightful workshop, students will become aware of the challenges posed by cameras and lenses, such as the way lenses see depth and space; the way cameras understand time and motion; and the way two-dimensional prints and screens impose edges and corners on what the camera sees. Through lectures, discussions, exercises and assignments, students will explore the specifics of “camera vision” and examine hundreds of pictures in order to better understand the frame itself and compositional strategies used by other photographers.

Creative Portraiture with Ken Merfeld

Once the staple of the fine art and commercial photographer, the view camera has been bypassed by faster cameras and instant processes. In this two-day workshop we will slow down the image-making rhythm and explore the creative control that can be achieved using large format cameras. This class is designed for those who have never used a view camera, those who want to reacquaint themselves or those who wish to master the camera for wet plate processes. Introduction to Adobe Photoshop 1 is a core fundamental workshop for photographers. This workshop focuses on the most essential features of Adobe Lightroom with the needs of the photographer in mind. This essential class is the introductory class for anybody looking to take extensive coursework in the school’s digital lab. Street Shooting 2 with Julia Dean

In this six-month class, students will learn how to shoot candidly on the street, not only from practical experience, but also from studying historic and contemporary street photographers. The class will meet once a month on Monday evenings, for lecture and critique, and once a month on Saturdays for a shooting session. Topics include: how to see light, the laws and ethics of shooting on the street, how to shoot candidly, how to approach people, and more.

Newly redesigned, Street Shooting 2 is meant for serious shooters who want to continue shooting together and looking at each others’ work. Not only will we continue to shoot on the streets, but we also be shooting specific events such as the Chinese New Year and the Gay Pride Parade. In this class, you will not only improve your street photography through continual practice, but you will also learn how to tell a story— with a beginning, middle and end—while shooting these events.

The Artistry of the Female Nude with Renée Jacobs

Stop, Drop and Shoot: The Magazine Assignment with Kevin Scanlon

In this two-day workshop, Kevin Scanlon, a freelance portrait photographer, will cover many aspects of what it takes to be a successful magazine shooter, and what comes with the territory. Scanlon will take you from beginning to end, covering topics such as how to compile a list of photo editors, the basics of marketing to magazines, the right questions to ask when an assignment is issued, executing a photo shoot, basics in post-production with digital capture, and image delivery.

The history of art is replete with depictions of the female nude, but the perspective of the female is often disregarded. This is a unique opportunity to learn the art of the female nude from one of the most published female photographers of the genre. While this workshop will cover many technical aspects of what makes a lasting nude image, the emphasis will be on working with models and the concept of the powerful nude to create images that truly reflect the strength and artistry of the female body.

In Webster’s dictionary, “Boudoir” is defined as a woman’s dressing room, bedroom, or private sitting room. But in photography the term has become very fashionable, a creation of sensual imagery of women of all ages, shapes, and sizes. In this workshop, photographer Jennifer Emery will guide participants on a journey into the art of photographing beautiful and stylistic boudoir. Students will learn the important skills of photographing boudoir as well as posing and working with women to make them look their best.

CANCELLATIONS On occasion a workshop may cancel due to low enrollment or unforeseen instructor conflicts. If such a case occurs, all students will be refunded in full. The Los Angeles Center of Photography does not take responsibility for non-refundable airline tickets, hotel expenses, or any other costs that may be attributable toward enrolling in a workshop.

STUDIO AND GALLERY RENTAL The Los Angeles Center of Photography’s space may be rented for studio shoots and/or art gallery exhibitions. The space measures a total of 2200 sq ft with a ceiling height of approximately 16ft. Beautiful track lighting is mounted along the facility’s three separate spaces. Six surface walls painted flat white allow for up to 50 images to be displayed (not stacked). The space is equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, sound and digital projection capability, if required. A wired hanging system allows for seamless and easy installation of art works. Cement floors covered with a protective sealant contribute to the space’s industrial flavor.
