ACADEMIC

COURSE Second Semester Studio, Pu Miao, SP18 TEAM Keli’i Williams, Christopher Lomboy KEY POINTS affordable housing; cut and fill slope Considering demand for both educators and housing, this proposal rezoning a R-5 designation to A-1,2,3. Low-density apartment buildings or A-1, regards both the context and parking requirements. A Conditional Use Permit will allow for variance in height. The project is (3) three buildings, (2) two typologies on a moderately steep grade. Between them are 90-degree parking stalls and a fire access road.

Design Futures Laboratory developed the project as a part of its continuous efforts for establishing the intellectual repository and resilient interface for our future. The lab is directed by Professor Emeritus Raymond Yeh and Associate Professor Hyoung-June Park. As one of research assistants at the lab, Julia Schray, first year D.Arch candidate, played a key role in this project with her volition “as accessibility to academia can provide knowledge for those interestCOMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL ed in progressive architectural theory and application”.

GALLARDA HOUSE TRANSFORMED COURSE Structures, Pu Miao, FA17

A design by Estudio JFGS in Nijar, Spain, completed 2014. This projected acted as the framework to understand the preliminary design and the drawings. It was transformed using beams and columns as supports, as that directly affected the overall form and fenestration. This course was an introduction to structures, including best practices, codes and regulations, drawings, details, and construction. Buildings were designed with 8 inch concrete and without the primary use of load-bearing walls.

FRANZ MÜLLER-LYER HOUSE COURSE Bootcamp Studio, Karla Sierralta, SP17 This project follows the premise of an ADU. It has the minimal requirements to be a second inhabitable house sharing a parcel with a primary residence. The parameters of the design were specified for a lot on Oahu with a maximum square footage of 800 for a 1 bedroom, 2 occupants. The construction of this building is made with lava-crete and polycarbonate panels. The framework was that of the Social Individualism adopted by Gropius in his work, and Theo Van Doesburg: New Architecture: “Anti-cublic” and “functional space-cells”. Prompts to define parameters: (a) How can one implement in a structure both the Fibonacci’s sequence for proportions and differential geometry to create a continuous parametric surface as the building envelope? (b) What are the ideal figurations and formal relations in architecture? (c) Homogeneous space translated: The form alone is not the condition. The surfaces can be altered to re-imagined volume and space, light and transparency, depth, and contours to blur planes. The opening and closing of the “space-cells” directly affects internalities and externalities such as sound, pollution, light, and social interaction.

EXPERIMENTS IN ETHNOBOTANICAL PRODUCTION, M. DELICIOSA COURSE Landscape Architecture, Pheobe White SP20 Hawaiian ecology plays a key role in every aspect of island life. The islands are known for coconuts, pineapple, sugar cane, and coffee however they can become companion plants to the Monstera. As a naturalized species, uses include propagation (sales), ornamentation (hospitality), and fruit (market goods) as an alternative farm income for the Island of Hawaii. Works anticipated to be present in Sweden Sept 2021 for conference.

Right of Way Shack

M. deliciosa fruit is easily accessible for picking and loading a truck full of bushels. It's an opportunity to sell fruit to visitors coming to Kona coffee farms as well as the convenience. Fruit stands can be found all acros the state of Hawai'i. ARCH 696

PROFESSIONAL KEHALANI VILLAGE CENTER MAUI COMMERCIAL BUILDING, PARCEL 5 Parcel in Kehalani Village, apart of a master plan in West Maui. This commercial complex includes Foodland supermarket, Long Drugs, First Hawaiian Bank, Aloha gas station, amongst other local businesses. Various schemes were proposed to different lessees considering the use of the building. Some limitations due adjacency to storm runoff/bioswale and Foodland’s loading zone. PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT Produced final renderings in Photoshop while utilizing Revit and Rhino as a base.

HAF PUBLICATION While at Clifford Planning and Architecture, LLC, the firm volunteered to produce the book for the 2015 Medal of Honor as it was awarded to Donald Goo FAIA. This 50-page publication not only told the story of Donald Goo, but it recapped the careers of the previous winners. Additionally, the book addressed the community involvement in architecture and gave a brief history of the Medal itself. This publication was part of the overall planning efforts which helped to raise over $10,000 in profits ($27,000 overall) to both the Hawaii Architectural Foundation and the AIA Hawaii State Council.

7

PROJECT CONTRIBUTION Took the lead in producing the initial writing, graphic layout for the book, the invitations, eblasts, and Eventbrite website. With the help of AIA Honolulu, researched several of the previous winners and worked with other contributors to produce the layouts for all the winners. SCHRAY. PROFESSIONAL WORK.

MAHINAKAI II HOUSING OAHU

85 360 B Kaulawaha Rd, Waianae, completion TBD Moderate income housing development test to fit study. Prototype buildings from Hale Makana Apartments (located in Nanakuli, HI) were arranged on site to maximize usable square footage while not interfering with adjacent photo-voltaic arrays. The final design under construction is 48 units in (6) six 8-plex two-story buildings with 58 parking stalls and a single loading space. Project approved by city 2018.

FRONT ELEVATION - 12-PLEX

PROJECT CONTRIBUTION I utilized preexisting two-story housing models to develop multiple conceptual site plans that met all local zoning codes, building codes, and PV array restrictions. This includes mitigating the shadows from the buildings. These studies were done in Revit, rendered and laid-out in Photoshop. SCHRAY. PROFESSIONAL WORK.

ESPACIO // THE JEWEL OF WAIKIKI

2452 Kalakaua Ave, Waikiki, completion January 2019 We were approached by the client for interior conceptual renderings to renovate the units to have a more “beach-side lifestyle”. This extended-stay boutique hotel was designed with four typicals and a focus on interior design materials and textures. PROJECT CONTRIBUTION Worked with the project lead to create “soft” renderings to convey overall design concept. A mixture of hand drawings and Photoshop were overlaid on Sketch-up-base files to produce final renderings. Renderings needed to be impactful yet generic enough for the client to buy-into the design without focusing on specific products being placed within the units.
