Message from
President On 8 December 2012, I was elected to be the 2013 President of Junior Chamber International (JCI) East Kowloon. One year later (8 December 2013), I conclude my Presidential Year in the Awards Presentation Ceremony cum December Monthly Fellowship Gathering held on the same date. This is a happy coincidence and I am pleased that Together We Can and have achieved a lot in 2013. JCI has been promoting Individual Social Responsibility. As active citizens, members of JCI East Kowloon have exercised their Individual Social Responsibility to create positive impact to the community. We have successfully held our flagship project, Family Harmony “Happy Family Happy Teens”, to raise the public awareness about the increasingly hidden nature of drug abuse and to highlight the importance of family support in the rehabilitation of drug takers. We have also hosted the UNMDG x Global Citizens Debate Competition to promote UN Millennium Development Goals wider to the secondary school students. In this issue, we echo the theme of Individual Social Responsibility by inviting two successful people to share their experience of Individual Social Responsibility. The interviewees are Mr Bernard Chan, GBS, JP, member of the Executive Council, and our 1981 President Senator Allan Leung who shared their stories and how one can contribute by Individual Social Responsibility. Together We Can have a fruitful 2013. I wish the 2014 Board of Directors all the best! We are One Jaycee and Let’s Shine!

During JCI World Congress in Rio Brazil in November 2013, Junior Chamber International emphasized the importance of Impact and Active Citizenship. As a partner with the United Nations (UN), we are happy to launch UNMDGs and Global Compact.
Congratulations to the appointment of 2014 Honorary Le g a l Ad v i s o r S e n ato r D u f f y Wong, JP and Honorary Auditor Senator Tony Kam.
JCI East Kowloon hosted UNMDG x Global Citizens Debate Competition and it provided students with many opportunities to understand more about the global issues of worldwide needs. Meanwhile, Family Harmony, as its flagship project, has been widely reported by the media and greatly aroused the public concern of social issue in drug abuse. United to IMPACT, JCI East Kowloon, together with JCI Hong Kong and 19 affiliated chapters and with the close relationship with Kwun Tong District Office, JCI East Kowloon provides young people with opportunities to serve the community, empower young people to be LEADERS. We believe that as JCI members, we have responsibility to the community. We have responsibility to UNMDGs and we have responsibility to maintain Social Sustainability. Time flies, we have been working hard in 2013. It is a very fruitful year for JCI East Kowloon. Under the leadership of President Eliza and her whole-hearted Board members, it made Impact to JCI East Kowloon. It also impacted our beloved society.
In the past few months, JCI East Kowloon has successfully held many impactful events, especially hosting UNMDG x Global Citizens Debate Competition for over 6 months and honoured to have Mr Eddie Ng, SBS, JP, the Secretary for Education as the Guest of Honour of the final competition. B e s i d e s , Fa m i l y H a r m o ny s e r i e s o f eve n t s a re successfully held as the opening event received 6 press coverage with clear indication of JCI East Kowloon in the headline or contents. We are also great to know JCI East Kowloon has met their sister chapters frequently in order to explore more IA values in JC that will help more fellowship gatherings and projects at IA area. Lastly, I would send my congratulations that the Annual General Meeting was successfully held and the 2014 Board of Directors was successfully elected. Hope that 2014 President Elect Pong can continue President Eliza’s spirit of active citizenship in order to achieve another new height. Together We Can! All the best to JCI East Kowloon.

Interview with
Mr Bernard Chan, GBS, JP Member, Executive Council

No Regrets Mr Bernard Chan, GBS, JP, may seem to have a charmed life. He was born into affluence, was awarded the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1999, and enjoys a very successful career as the President of Asia Financial Holdings Ltd. and Asia Insurance Co. Ltd. However, the road to this point has been full of many adversities. One of his most life changing experiences occurred when he was just 18 years old. Mr Chan fell sick two weeks into his college year. The initial symptoms were migraine headaches and high blood pressure. It took 3 months subsequent to the first presentation of symptoms for the correct diagnosis to be made. It turns out Mr Chan had a very rare disease, Takayasu’s Arteritis, an artery disease, and by that time 3 arteries to his brain and kidneys were 80-90% blocked. Over the next 3 years, he was in and out of college as he went through a series of bypass operations. It was a tough time and though the problem was “fixed”, the disease was not cured. Mr Chan spent the next decade dealing with this burden the only way he could; denial, blame, and running away from his problems. After 10 years Mr Chan was able to accept this health issue as a part of his identity and something he would have to live with for the rest of his life. 30 years subsequent to the diagnosis he still takes 5 medications daily and every 6 months he must undergo another MRI and CT scan. A lesser man may have been broken under these circumstances, but Mr Chan feels that this experience changed the whole perspective of his life and through this, he was able to move on to the next level by facing his problems head on. When he was lying in the hospital bed nearly dying, he was able to reflect on his past experiences and realize that he had made a mess of many things, yet he didn’t have the chance to make repairs. Mr Chan then made a commitment to himself that if he ever got well, he would make sure that he puts his best effort into everything he does.

The Importance of Attitude Mr Chan stresses the importance of attitude. Everyone goes through adversity in life; the question is how one reacts. It is normal to feel unpleasant when adversity strikes; however, it is most important to quickly move on, learn from one’s mistakes, and try to avoid the same situation in the future. Mr Chan believes that the worst thing to do about adversity is nothing because these things will definitely happen again if one does not learn. Earlier this year, Mr Chan was asked to chair the Council for Sustainable Development. He acknowledges that this position is not a coveted one. Many people would have turned this down due to potential of unpopularity. It is unlikely that one can handle a problem as large as waste disposal in Hong Kong without offending a significant percentage of people. When faced with these decisions, he tells us, “If it’s the right thing to do, then do it”. Mr Chan stresses that
Mr Chan’s dream job was to be a banker, but he was assigned to insurance. At the time he fought and resisted, but in the end he gave in but went into it with a good attitude. Now, many years later, he realizes that if he hadn’t been involved in insurance, then 3 years later he wouldn’t have entered into politics representing the insurance industry. The point is that if we go through life only waiting for the dream job or perfect opportunity then nothing will get done. Often the younger generation feels that life is not fair and they complain that they are not given golden opportunities. But you have the choice, whether to make the best of what is given, or keep waiting for the rare chance of a dream job. Mr Chan’s experience is that you must make the best out of each situation for it to lead you to another new opportunity.
Individual Social Responsibility Hong Kong is Our Home Mr Chan is actively involved in various public services including Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service; Member of Executive Council; Chairman of Council for Sustainable Development, of Lingnan University, of Hong Kong – Thailand Business Council, of Advisory Committee on Revitalization of Historic Buildings, of The Standing Committee on Judicial Salaries and Conditions of Service, Vice Chairman of Oxfam Hong Kong and many others. When questioned why we should have individual social responsibility, Mr Chan has a very simple answer: “This is our home”. If we consider Hong Kong a home then we all have a moral obligation to make this a better place. It is Mr Chan’s opinion is that the most effective method of promoting individual social responsibility is through organizations such as Junior Chamber International, and other NGOs because these organizations directly engage with the people. Firstly people need to be educated about the needs of society, and then they should be taught how to contribute, whether by volunteering, mentoring, or donating, etc. It is important for the public to understand the issues to which they donate their time and money rather than just blindly giving. This was an inspiration to the Caring Company Campaign of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service he helped to create, where the whole purpose was matching corporations to societal needs.

Senator Allan Leung 1981 President, JCI East Kowloon
Many of us may not have known our 1981 President Senator Allan Leung. After migration to the US for many years and with his return to Hong Kong this year, we are very pleased that PP Senator Allan has rejoined our East Kowloon family. Through interaction with him and many sharings from Past Presidents, we very much appreciate his substantial contribution to JCI East Kowloon over the years, his extraordinary history and success. We are honored to have interviewed our most respectable PP Senator Allan who shared with us his good old days in the then East Kowloon Jaycees, how he has served JCI and learnt as well as individual social responsibility.
The Good Old Days – Establishment of the then East Kowloon Jaycees Back in the middle of 1979, a group of former Kowloon Jaycees, including 1981 President Senator Allan Leung, were working day in and day out, for the formation of a new chapter – East Kowloon. The blue print was designed by his respectable mentor – 1981 National President Senator Edmond Pang of Kowloon Jaycees. PP Senator Allan was always grateful to Senator Edmond for all his valuable advices directed to East Kowloon and himself. To PP Senator Allan, this was indeed the Good Old Days. The “advice” was to take no more than 6 members from Kowloon to this new Chapter. So, our late Senator CK Tang and PP Senator Allan had to come up with the rest of the membership within only 6 months to complete the task. They tried every effort to convince their friends and colleagues to join this new Chapter. At long last, they were so happy to announce “mission accomplished”. East Kowloon had more than 30 members recruited. Senator Duffy Wong, JP helped East Kowloon to draft our initial Memorandum and Articles of Association and our By-laws. Our late Senator CK Tang became our Charter President, and PP Senator Allan was one of the 2 Charter Vice Presidents. We had our Charter Night staged on 1 March 1980, with over 300 guests witnessing the birth of East Kowloon. Our Honorary Legal Advisor and Honorary Life Member, Senator Duffy Wong, JP, and Senator OK Yung are among those Charter members who are still active.
The Challenges in JCI East Kowloon and Experience Gained 5 months into the late Senator CK Tang’s presidency, he was transferred to Macau by his company to take care of business over there. All of a sudden, there was a big question mark placed in front of Charter President Senator CK and PP Senator Allan: how East Kowloon would be run with our President only be in Hong Kong one or two days in a week? Some ideas were come up, such as long leaves, acting president…… PP Senator Allan reckoned none of these would be good for East Kowloon’s image. So, he made an offer to Charter President Senator CK that they were not going to announce this situation; PP Senator Allan would take up whatever required to be done during his absence; and Charter President Senator CK was still our President. The work load of PP Senator Allan in East Kowloon became doubled.

At that time, PP Senator Allan was a junior executive in a bank. But Jaycees was his “full time job”. He was blessed to have a very understanding boss, who was also a Lion’s Club President. PP Senator Allan discussed with his boss who allowed him to make phone calls and typed letters (manual typewriters, mind you) for Jaycees during part of the office hours when needed. He gradually learnt how to face stress and penetrate through hardship while still produced high quality work and maintained efficiency. He also learnt how to prepare himself to accomplish goals at confined situations where success looked remote. PP Senator Allan treasures these hard-earned experience, which has helped him through his presidency in 1981, and, most importantly, throughout his career.
Individual Social Responsibility Individual Social Responsibility (ISR) is about a person becoming responsible in his believes and actions which affect the society. The scope of effect doesn’t include his friends and family. In fact, ISR is a powerful tool for social change. There are lots of things that a person can do to achieve his ISR. These include, but not limited to, volunteering in time and volunteering in money (in terms of donation). For the part of “volunteering in time”, that would include the involvement of labour contribution, or simply the transfer of knowledge and experience. In fact, almost every human being can stand by his ISR.
A Role Model of Individual Social Responsibility – Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life PP Senator Allan first had a chance to get personally involved with the community was during his secondary school years in Hong Kong. Every day after school hours, his school held classes for the less fortunate children nearby in the neighbourhood, free of charge. He was one of those students chosen to teach them simple English and how to write Chinese. He was only 16, not much older than those kids. He had such emotional feelings: on one hand, he was grateful that he could receive fine education; while on the other hand, he was facing those children whose parents couldn’t even afford to buy them a book. After the first lesson that he has taught, he promised himself that he would help as many kids and young people as my ability can provide. PP Senator Allan still remembers that he was in tears when he made that promise to himself. After PP Senator Allan has made achievement in his career, he spares some of his time and had a chance to join the St John Ambulance Brigade. He chose to serve in their Cadet Section (now called Cadet Command). He wanted to fulfill his promise – to help as many kids and young people as his ability can provide. He worked hard and his performance met with the Brigade’s approval. He was recently appointed as Assistant Commissioner, Commander to the Cadets Command. His ranking now gives him a bigger authority in planning and executing more meaningful training to his 3000 plus Cadets, which in return, will provide better services to our community. At the same time, PP Senator Allan wishes that the Vision and Mission of St John Ambulance Brigade Cadet Command will be carried out by each of the cadets that we have trained.
PP Senator Allan does not believe any lifestyle may hinder anyone to perform his ISR. It is his will power that dictates. If someone doesn’t s e e t h at h e h a s t h at responsibility, then that would be his choice. Nothing, and no one, should be blamed for.

JCI Asia Pacific Conference (ASPAC) has b e e n o n e o f t h e i m p o r t a n t i n te r n at i o n a l events of JCI where members particularly from the Asia-Pacific area met to discuss the JCI developments and extend international friendship. This year, the JCI ASPAC was held in Gwangju, Korea on 13-16 June 2013. SMC Chairman and Honorary Life Member Senator OK Yung, Senior Member Anthony Kong and I joined the JCI Hong Kong delegation to the JCI ASPAC. Unlike Seoul, Gwangju is not a commonly visited area in Korea. It is not very advanced, but a small nice place. We came here to feel and enjoy the internationalism of JCI.

Internationalism
Internationalism is one of the most attractive development opportunities of JCI. You cannot really experience internationalism if you have not joined any sister chapter visit. The international friendship and very warm hospitality of sister chapter can be deeply felt when President Eliza Chan visited JCI Ipoh, our sister chapter in Malaysia and met with President Jason Tan and members of JCI Ipoh on 2426 September 2013. This is more than a vacation but also an occasion for JCI East Kowloon and JCI Ipoh to exchange and strengthen friendship. During the visit, there are exchange meetings, gatherings with Past Presidents and members, visit to coffee factory and sightseeing. This is a really “Good Good Very” visit with good memories and delicious Ipoh food.

Young Professional Seminar Series II – A Talk to Remember How do you Introduce yourself? Do you leave a Lasting impression? Are you networking Effectively? Mr Joshua Chui, NLP Practitioner, delivered a talk to teach us how to achieve networking and effective communication.
Joint Community Service Day 三會結義耀才能 This has been the third year since we have jointly organized with JCI Victoria and JCI Tai Ping Shan this meaningful visit to the Spastic Association of Hong Kong in 2011. We had a lot of fun playing with children with autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Informal Board Games and Auction Dinner We had a funny night enjoying different kinds of board games. Participants also played the meaningful "Auction Dinner" to experience the unfair aspects in the society.

On 29 September 2013, the AGM cum September MFG was held. The AGM ran very smoothly and efficiently. With a large turnout the atmosphere was exciting as the candidates gave their speeches. Most memorable was Vice President Candidate Peter, who passionately spoke Japanese to encourage members to support JCI ASPAC to be held in Japan in 2014. After the successful election of the 2014 Board of Directors, a successful murder mystery dinner ensued.

“Happy Family Happy Teens”
Since 2005, JCI East Kowloon has been organizing her flagship project “Family Harmony”. This year, the theme is “Happy Family Happy Teens”, which is a response to the growing concern about the increasingly hidden nature of drug abuse as revealed by the latest figures of the Central Registry of Drug Abuse, and to highlight the importance of family support and communication in the rehabilitation of drug takers.

JCI East Kowloon
Established in 1980, Junior Chamber International (JCI) East Kowloon is a registered charitable organization. She is one of the 19 local chapters of the JCI Hong Kong, which is affiliated with the worldwide leadership development organization – JCI. JCI is a membershipbased non-profit organization of young active citizens aged 18 to 40 in more than 100 countries who are dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. Its mission is to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. To achieve this mission, she has launched a variety of projects to develop members’ potential on leadership and management skills.

Learn how to manage your time, your money and your work. By carrying out projects of different sizes and nature, you can develop your management skills and problem-solving abilities. Gain experience to be a leader at various levels in the organization. Training seminars, workshops and leadership camps are organized, giving opportunities for self-improvement. Accept challenges and responsibilities and gain new experience outside your normal work life.
Through the annual Conference and Congress, you can travel abroad and gain more international experience. Derive an awareness of universal problems and an understanding of people all over the world. Develop international friendship through the network of Junior Chamber International. Through interaction with people of different backgrounds, you can develop your social skills and make new friends.
Community
Business
Develop individual awareness and sensitivity to the problems of the community. Voice your opinion on community issues. Identify community needs to improve the well being of Hong Kong, ultimately leading to the betterment of the global community.
Provides opportunities to pursue business interests through National Business Network (NBN) and worldwide Junior Chamber networking activities. Business seminars and contact sessions organized by National Business Network and International Business Network (IBN) throughout the year.
