The artistic viewpoints reflected in these programs do not necessarily represent the positions or opinions of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland.

Dear Friends,

This past summer was a whirlwind of activity. As has been our goal since the inception of the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection, every substantial community arts festival/event had an Israeli presence.

ChamberFest Cleveland welcomed Israeli harpist Sivan Magen; BorderLight Festival of International Theater featured the award-winning monodrama “Oasis” performed by Amir Peter; Piano Cleveland opened their summer festival with Duo Amal; and Tel Aviv street artists Dede Bandaid and Nitzan Mintz created Culture Fix CLE in collaboration with FRONT (page 12.) Rounding out the summer, glass artist Dafna Kaffeman spent a week in residency in conjunction with her exhibition “If You Thirst for a Homeland” in the Federation’s Roe Green Gallery.

Looking ahead, we are commencing our year-long celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the State of Israel with a performance by the Israel Philharmonic on November 12 at 8 pm. The ensemble will perform works by Prokofiev under the baton of new Music Director Lahav Shani (page 4.)

You will enjoy “Meet the Artist” receptions, name recognition in the twice yearly arts brochures and on www.jewishcleveland.org, plus the satisfaction of knowing you are helping connect Cleveland and Israel through the arts.

For more information about the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection Patron Society, please contact Hedy Milgrom at hmilgrom@jewishcleveland.org or 216-593-2850.

Hot off the presses, we are pleased to announce that Shalva Band will perform in Cleveland on May 9, 2023 (Page 5.) Not only is the band renowned for their performances at Israel’s Rising Star competition, but Shalva Band’s performance at Eurovision 2019 was enjoyed by over 15 million fans worldwide. Stay tuned and watch for the next issue (January 2023) of the Cleveland Israel Arts Connection for more ways to celebrate Israel @ 75 through music, visual art, theater, film, and literature.

Warm regards, Roe Green

Noa Tishby is on a mission to correct misperceptions of Israel its history, culture, and people. After watching Israel be criticized by the global community, particularly online, Tishby began defending the country on Twitter and beyond. What began as a hobby developed into a deep passion, and ultimately, a vocation. The more Tishby sought to explain Israel to others, the more she sought to learn herself. From that journey, this book was born.

Noa Tishby is an Israeli-American performing artist, producer, author and activist. In April 2022, Tishby was appointed as Israel’s first-ever Special Envoy for Combating Antisemitism and Delegitimization of Israel.

Mondays, October 24 – November 7, 2022 @ 10 – 11:30 am ET Landmark Centre, 25700 Science Park Drive, Beachwood

Pardes (Hebrew for “orchard”) is a Jewish legend about four rabbis of the Mishnaic period who visited the “orchard” of esoteric Torah knowledge. Only one survived the experience unharmed. The novelists David Hopen and Yochi Brandes have both written novels titled “The Orchard,” inspired by this legend. In this class, participants will compare and contrast these two books, exploring how both authors craft narratives that grapple with testing the boundaries of religious belief.

FRIEDLANDER

January 12-13, 2023

Omer Friedlander was born in Jerusalem in 1994 and grew up in Tel Aviv. He earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Cambridge, England, and an MFA from Boston University. His short stories have won numerous awards, and have been published in the United States, Canada, France, and Israel. He currently lives in New York City.

“The Man Who Sold Air in the Holy Land” announces the arrival of a natural-born storyteller of immense talent. Warm, poignant, delightfully whimsical, Friedlander’s gorgeously immersive and imaginative stories take you to the narrow limestone alleyways of Jerusalem, the desolate beauty of the Negev Desert, and the sprawling orange groves of Jaffa, with characters that spring to vivid life. These stories render the intimate lives of people striving for connection. They are fairy tales turned on their head by the stakes of real life, where moments of fragile intimacy mix with comedy and notes of the absurd. Told in prose of astonishing vividness that also demonstrates remarkable control and restraint, they have a universal appeal to the heart.

< “If You Thirst for a Homeland and Seek Shelter in Its Bosom, Love It and Live in Its Mountains and Valleys, Its Flora and Fauna.”

Flame-worked glass, felt, letter stencils, 2017

Israeli born glass artist Dafna Kaffeman has been challenging viewer’s notions about tolerance, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and morality in Europe, the United States, and Scandinavia.

Her exquisitely crafted plant specimens, made in flame-worked glass from Israel’s natural world, are combined with embroidered texts. Handkerchiefs, often associated with mourning, are the backdrops for many of the glass plants. Inspired by nature, her pieces convey the complexities of life in Israel. Her work ignites an intellectual and emotional response.

Kaffeman began her studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and received her BFA at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. In 2002 she received her MFA from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. She now heads the glass department at Bezalel. Her work has been exhibited in the Corning Museum of Glass, the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

BEYOND BORDERS: THE ART OF SIONA BENJAMIN

Samantha Baskind, Ph.D., curator Presented by Cleveland State University

January 8 – March 25, 2023

Galleries at CSU 1307 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland

The identity of Indian-American-Jewish artist Siona Benjamin is layered and multifaceted, just like her artwork. Raised as a Jew and member of the Bene Israel community in largely Hindu and Muslim Mumbai, Siona Benjamin attended Catholic and Zoroastrian schools before moving to the US. Benjamin’s transcultural view has been shaped by diverse, complex experiences and is inspired by history and mythology, as illustrated by the captivating characters and symbolism that populate her art.

Immigration, gender, the concept of “home,” and the role of art in social change are explored through vibrantly hued paintings blending tradition with innovation and navigating feelings of inclusion and exclusion. Further reflecting current issues, Benjamin’s work considers and challenges perceptions about culture, race, and religion. In crossing boundaries and building bridges, she asks viewers to do the same.

Healing Our Community through the Arts

An installation by Tel Aviv artists Dede Bandaid and Nitzan Mintz in collaboration with local photographer Daniel Levin. Presented by Cleveland Israel Arts Connection Summer 2022

Culture Fix CLE provides a visual narration of the harm to arts and culture that has been damaged by the pandemic; builds bridges between Israeli and American art; and connects with the community through the universal theme of tikkun olam, repairing the world.

Significant leaders in Cleveland’s fine arts community and other arts disciplines were the subject of a photoshoot directed by Dede. Over the past summer, life-sized prints with Dede’s iconic images were installed at myriad venues around Greater Cleveland.

• Some images may still be available for viewing

• For more information, visit www.jewishcleveland.org/culturefixcle.

Dede Bandaid & Nitzan Mintz

Dede is an urban narrative artist. Nitzan Mintz is an artist and street poet. Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, they constantly seek new opportunities to create innovative artworks. Dede has become synonymous with Israeli street art, having used Tel Aviv as a canvas for more than two decades.

Although the Culture Fix imagery is intended to be temporary, Dede & Nitzan left a more permanent reminder of their residency in Cleveland. They created a mural in Coventry Village in Cleveland Heights that was inspired by the neighborhood and the wildlife living nearby.
