This fall we will develop two new program departments. With new funding coming from grants from The Associated, the Jim Joseph Foundation, and other local foundations, we are creating a Center for Teen Engagement. Over the next year, our new team of teen professionals will work in collaboration with other Jewish organizations and synagogues to strengthen existing programs and develop new ones that engage more Baltimore Jewish teens in immersive Jewish experiences.

I can fly. What's your super power?

Preregistration Required

Swim lessons fill up early, to ensure your spot in your chosen class please sign up at least 5 days prior to the start of the lesson. We cannot guarantee a spot for last minute registrations because we may not be prepared with adequate staffing.

Swimming Lesson Policy

Aqua Zumba® blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance, for one pool party you shouldn’t miss! According to our instructor Stephanie Rafferty, this low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise will enable you to “really let loose without putting any extra pressure on your joints. The water creates a natural resistance, which means every step is more challenging and helps tone your muscles.”

Sometimes the pool becomes unavailable for swimming lessons due to circumstances beyond our control. If the pool is unavailable for swimming lessons due to inclement weather or health and safety related issues, our instructors will conduct a land-based session including either water safety and/or land-based stroke drills at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up lessons will not be scheduled if a water session needs to be missed for one of these reasons. The JCC does not provide refunds for missed water sessions.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CENTERS

Parents, celebrate your child’s next birthday with one of the J’s terrific birthday packages. The J is party-central – offering the place and space you need for birthday activity and fun. • Playtime Parties • Outdoor Pool Parties • Sports and Martial Arts Parties • Dance and Arts Parties You name it – we will make it happen! J parties are available at our Owings Mills, Park Heights, and Downtown Baltimore locations, for children ages 1-10 years.

“I always want to work at JCC’s,” Carly says. “JCC’s are where I had my first job and it will hopefully be where I have my last job.” “I love that the J has something for infants, for seniors and everyone in between.” As an educator, Carly says her personal style is to get out from behind the administrator’s desk, and “be a part of it,” moving in and out of the classrooms all day, getting to know the children, and talking to parents.

Carly insists on full transparency with parents “because they need to know what is happening and when it’s happening in our school.” Carly also wants her teachers to feel supported, and wants them to get the professional development they need to thrive. “Our teachers are a huge priority,” she says, “so we’ll give them training in the classroom, through classes with the Center for Jewish Education, and through other outside sources.” “Our Early Childhood Educations Centers,” Carly says, “are like a gateway to JCC life for families, an entry point for families to learn about and become involved in JCC life.” 22

In her new position at the J, Susan will be overseeing camps, early childhood education, and the J’s youth and teen programs.

SUSAN SHERR-SEITZ

Susan says the common factor for her in working with groups of people over the years has been her ability to innovate and help move people and projects from Point A to Point B.

Senior Vice President, Programs and Innovation The J is excited to welcome the latest addition to its Executive Team, Susan Sherr-Seitz, who serves in the role of Senior Vice President, Programs and Innovation. Susan comes to the J after serving for over 15 years as an Associate Vice President for the Jewish Federations of North America and two years as an Executive Search Consultant with DRG, Inc., where she specialized in recruiting development and c-suite positions in the Jewish community. While at JFNA, Susan directed all aspects of the General Assembly, the annual meeting of the Jewish federation movement and the largest Jewish philanthropic conference in North America. A masters graduate of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, Susan prides herself in her abilities to turn around challenging projects and develop driven, productive, and successful teams.

“The JCC is a bedrock piece of the Baltimore Jewish Community, and I look forward to helping take things from good to great with all the amazing, passionate people we have.” A Baltimore native, Susan moved back here from New York four years ago, leaving behind her nationally-focused Jewish communal work to be closer to family. “I have a great record of building successful and ‘happy’ teams. Happy is a really important thing for me to bring to work. To be happy and fulfilled in what you do, and to share that with others, I believe, is of paramount importance.” “I am ‘crazy excited’ about working at the J,” Susan says, “and what you see is what you get from me – I am all in!”

SPORTS LEAGUES | Owings Mills Class

Susan loves to be a part of teams that are bent on moving things from “good to great,” a reference to the business best seller by Jim Collins, describing how organizations can transition from being average to great organizations.

REBECCA CHINSKY Senior Director, Recreation and the JCC Maccabi Experience Introducing Rebecca A. Chinsky, the J’s new Senior Director of Recreation and the JCC Maccabi Experience.

“One of my passions is youth sports, and the J is so unique in that we cater to the greater community and answer the needs in this area.” Says Rebecca. “My goal is to enhance our middle and high school sports programming to offer competitive leagues and provide the opportunity for athletes to build their sport specific skills. One way to do this is through creating a JCC travel team for various sports,” Rebecca says. “I am excited,” she says, “To be in this position and working within a community where I can give back.”

Pick a sport, any sport. Soccer, Basketball, Track and Field, Volleyball, Lacrosse – you name it, Rebecca’s taught it or coached it at just about every level – elementary through high school, in schools and at summer camps including Milldale and the J’s sports camps. She has also served as the Soccer and Basketball Coach for the Baltimore JCC Maccabi team. “It’s all about skills and drills,” says Rebecca. At the University of Michigan, Rebecca graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education and a minor in Health. She completed her Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Physical Education at McDaniel College last spring, and recently completed the requirements for Admin I certification. Before the J, Rebecca worked as a Physical Education and Health Teacher at Heritage High School for Baltimore City Schools, where she was involved in reinforcing the academic curriculum for students. She also designed a high school personal fitness course as well as a swimming course.

Our Maccabi Sports Camp participants have been enjoying lunch and other activities in the brand new John Evan Bearman Pavilion, located on the lower fields of the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC. Named in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon Bearman’s son John, and built with funds provided by The Herbert Bearman Foundation, the pavilion is equipped with electricity and fans, and is open for members to use for picnicking during non-camp hours.

CHANGING LIVES

ARTS | Adults

The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore

Class

Watching his older brother play baseball for JCC Maccabi, Craig Cohen knew he wanted the same experience. What could be more exciting than traveling to another city with a bunch of teens while playing the sport he loved? But Craig never anticipated that a Maccabi experience would be so much more than a series of competitions. In fact, it became, in his own words, something that has changed his life, giving him self-confidence and a network of friends across the Jewish spectrum. Each year, programs at the JCC touch people, making their lives just a little more meaningful. The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore is there every step of the way, providing funding that supports the JCC and other agencies that make our community stronger. Through its Annual Campaign, The Associated helps families with young children establish a Jewish home, teens find their identity, women escape abusive marriages and seniors live productive and happy lives. Here are a few of those people.

Larry Coleman

Today, Larry Coleman is happy. Running to lunch with his new friend, Rhona, attending shows and parties held at Weinberg Village – even, planning Sunday brunch – he walks around with a big smile. It’s hard to believe this was the same person, who, only a few years ago, was spiraling downward after losing his wife. “I was totally and completely depressed after my wife died,” he says. “I lost 30 -35 pounds. I would walk around moping every day.”

He moved to CHAI’s Weinberg Village in Owings Mills, supported by The Associated, and slowly began participating in activities. There he met Rhona Rosenberg. The couple now spends countless hours together, many at Weinberg Village, attending social activities, shows and movies, as well as planning events. Living in Weinberg Village and meeting one another has made this stage of their life a productive and happy one. “I was so depressed and she snapped me out of it,” Larry says. Says Rhona: “Weinberg is a community. You come here and you instantly have a family.”

Rebecca Prigal

It can happen to anyone. Just ask Rebecca Prigal. Once an outspoken young woman, with a promising career as a community activist, she found herself living in an abusive relationship, socially withdrawn, a shadow of her former self.

She never expected it to be this way. When she first met her future husband, she was so excited to date someone whose goals were similar to hers, she ignored the red flags and comments from friends. For 15 years, she suffered in an emotionally abusive relationship. Finally, with the help of CHANA, an agency of The Associated, she left her marriage and received the legal and psychological support she needed. She now shares her story with other women. “Thanks to CHANA, I’m finding my voice again. It makes me want to be an inspiration to other women,” she says. This year, make a difference to individuals like Craig, Larry and Rebecca. Support our community by supporting The Associated. Learn more at associated.org. Screening of Straightlaced followed by a panel discussion. In partnership with JCS and JQ Baltimore

Sunday, October 25; 1:00-3:00pm | Morstein Performa, Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC The documentary, Straightlaced unearths how popular pressures around gender and sexuality are confining American teens. Their stories reflect a diversity of experiences, demonstrating how gender role expectations and homophobia are interwoven, and illustrating the different ways that these expectations connect with culture, race and class. From girls confronting media messages about culture and body image to boys who are sexually active just to prove they aren’t

gay, this fascinating array of students opens up with brave, intimate honesty about the toll that deeply held stereotypes and rigid gender policing have on all our lives. You will hear perspectives from teens who self-identify as straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual or questioning and represent all points of the gender spectrum. With courage and unexpected humor, they open up their lives to the camera. For details contact Rachael Abrams at JCS: 410.500.5371
