Mission Statement MOTHER McAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational community committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as lifelong goals.

President’s Message In this season of giving thanks, I’m pleased to share with you our annual donor report, which recognizes the enormous support you continue to provide to Mother McAuley. This report is a reflection of the hundreds of individuals, families and organizations who advance the mission of our school and believe in the influence and progress McAuley women can bring to our world. In our commitment to remain good stewards of your support, last fiscal year we made tremendous strides in improving our facilities, updating our technology infrastructure, and growing our scholarship and financial assistance offerings. You may read about these and other accomplishments on page 6. Renovations to our buildings and grounds, as well as ongoing investments in instructional technology, highlight our desire to prepare McAuley students of today for tomorrow. We continue our pursuit of academic excellence by constantly asking ourselves how we can better prepare our students for a future we cannot even imagine. Education is no longer limited to an environment of walls where a teacher lectures in front of the classroom. Innovative programming and instruction through our 1:1 iPad® program allow teachers to differentiate instruction and give students the creative freedom to explore learning in new and exciting ways, while preparing them to become responsible digital citizens. We are most grateful for the giving that allows us to attract and retain top students, while alleviating the financial burden that impacts so many families who value and desire a Catholic education for their daughter(s). We are encouraged that donor participation, with gifts to the Annual Fund, financial aid and scholarships, increased by nearly 30 percent in 2014-2015. We were able to establish four new scholarships, and award more than $1 million collectively to our families. Our ability to provide the academic tools and resources for our young women to secure futures filled with endless opportunities, depends on us successfully nurturing and strengthening relationships between McAuley and our supporters. This will ensure that the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education for young women remains available, accessible, accountable, and affordable for all who wish to attend. Mother McAuley remains a great investment in Catholic education, and we are here to stay and flourish. Advancing our Mission, Enhancing Education With a mission that is as vibrant as 170 years ago when the Sisters of Mercy first opened Saint Xavier Academy for Girls on Wabash Avenue, to today at a sprawling campus on 99th Street which is nearly 60 years young, Mother McAuley’s commitment to educating women of Mercy for the 21st century remains at the center of our charge. Under the leadership of president Mary Acker Klingenberger ‘75, and principal Eileen Boyce ‘03, and the senior leadership team, McAuley is poised to continue to provide young women with an environment and curriculum that prepares them to be successful in all they pursue. The need for additional financial resources for families, integration of innovative tools and technologies in the classroom, and updates to our facilities remain the focus as we continue to advance and equip our students for the future. Following is a snapshot of our progress and enhancements from the past fiscal year.

New scholarship

Established in 2014, the Sister Agatha O’Brien Memorial Scholarship honors the ministry of a Mercy woman who, in the face of extreme hardship, demonstrated leadership, courage and perseverance. Sister Agatha led the first contingent of Sisters of Mercy to Chicago in 1846 to minister to the poor, sick and uneducated. The $2,000 scholarship, named in her honor, is awarded to the top five percent of students who take the High School Placement Test. The school commits to rewarding each of these young ladies for their impressive achievements and helping them develop their potential in a single-gender environment that provides a lifetime advantage. Twenty-two members of the Class of 2018 received this award, which is renewable throughout their four years at McAuley, presuming they remain in strong academic standing. The scholarship is funded in part by a $25,000 grant from the Helen Brach Foundation, in addition to proceeds from the annual Celebration Gala.

a grant from the Birch Foundation. The CIT offers one-on-one instruction to help faculty develop and sharpen their technology skills and enhance their instructional abilities and curricular goals. Located within the McAuley Media Center (formerly known as the Library) the CIT contains a sampling of all the technology tools utilized throughout the school; from iPads, to computers, to SMARTBoards, and more. A faculty member and Instructional Technology Specialist staff the CIT.

3 iPad® Integration and the Center for Innovative Teaching

As students become immersed in a digital world, McAuley is directed at enhancing their learning and equipping them with the skills and technological tools to be successful in college and in the working world. For the 2014-2015 school year, McAuley launched a 1:1 iPad® program, requiring freshmen and sophomores to have an iPad as part of their materials, while juniors and seniors were given the option. To provide additional support for teachers integrating the iPad into their curriculum, McAuley opened the Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT), a state-of-the-art resource space supported by

Instituting a Senior Leadership Model

In July 2014, following a lengthy nationwide search, Eileen Boyce ’03, was the first alumna to be named principal of the school. Boyce previously spent two years in the role of assistant principal at McAuley. Her achievements during her tenure include directing the AdvancED accreditation process, co-chairing the Academic Council, directing the implementation of the Strategic Academic Plan and creating and implementing the 1:1 iPad program. The addition of Ms. Boyce completed the vision of president Mary Klingenberger to assemble a Senior Leadership Team comprised of herself; Principal Boyce ‘03; Vice Principal, Sister Lois Bromark, SSJ/TOSF; Vice President of Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Terry Corcoran; and Carey Temple Harrington ‘86, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. The team works collaboratively to provide each other counsel, making McAuley stronger and advancing our purpose.

We’ve Gone Green!

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, and to remain fiscally responsible, McAuley made a substantial reduction in the number of paper mailings to families, alumnae, donors and other supporters. A bi-weekly, parent electronic newsletter was introduced. Featuring news of the latest school happenings, stories of student and faculty achievements and other important updates from Principal Boyce, the newsletter is emailed to parents/ families every other week. Additionally, parents are directed to Edline, the school website, and special parent web portals where they can access all important documents and forms. Beyond this, the school expanded online registration and tickets sales for events such as the annual fall musical, Madrigal Dinner and various parent club fundraisers and events.

Improved Admissions Criteria

With a keen eye on attracting and enrolling students who will succeed in McAuley’s challenging environment, in the spring of 2014 our Admissions team unveiled new measures to ensure our young women are well-prepared as they begin their McAuley career. Students’ acceptance and placement is based not only on their scores on the High School Placement Test, but also their grammar school records, previous standardized test scores, prior student conduct and consideration of Catholic heritage and family connection to the school. McAuley recognizes that some students needed to attend summer school to sharpen their skills. With the assistance of administrators, faculty and staff, McAuley implemented a new summer school curriculum, and for many students, successful completion of the program was a pre-requisite for acceptance. The feedback from parents was positive, with many stating that their daughters developed a “newfound confidence in core Math and English abilities” and felt “well-prepared to start their McAuley education.”

Accolades and Accomplishments

We are proud that the Class of 2015 – as well as the four previous graduating classes – boasts a 100% acceptance rate into college; a statistics far above the national average of 65 percent. The 278 members of the class of 2015 are enrolled at 76 colleges, universities or institutions in 24 States. Eighty-one percent of these graduates were accepted to their first choice school, and collectively, these women were awarded more than $30 million in merit-based scholarship. Thirty percent represent the first member in their family to attend college. Members of the Class of 2015 are enrolled at The University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, Villanova University, Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame, The George Washington University, Purdue University, DePaul University, and The University

of Illinois. Several girls were directly admitted into specialized programs at schools such as Milwaukee School of Engineering, the Saint Louis University medical scholars program, and the Purdue University engineering program.

Unveiling a nine-period schedule for 2015-2016

During 2014-2015, principal Eileen Boyce and other members of the administration collected and reviewed data regarding students schedules and course selection. After careful review, it was determined that for the 2015-2016 academic year, a nine-period schedule would be introduced. With this change, students graduate prepared for college, and well versed in the liberal arts, as they are not forced to choose between a fourth year of math/science/language and fine arts classes. They can do both! In addition to the academic benefits the new schedule offers, students now have room in their schedule for lunch periods. This requirement allows McAuley to nourish the health and wellness of all students, with a needed break in the day. In prior years some students were forced to take summer school, eliminate their lunch period to fit in all their classes, or remove the class from their schedule completely. The added period affords students room to take elective courses that meet their needs and interests. Additionally, other students may opt to add a study period to their schedule, so they may to take advantage of the study resources we offer: the Learning Resource Center, Math Center, Media Center, Computer Lab, Science Center, and Counseling and College Counseling Services.

Improved Alumnae Engagement

The revised schedule features forty-two minute classes with four minute passing periods. While the dismissal time remains the same (2:50 p.m.), the start time changed by five minutes (7:55 a.m.).

Updated Infrastructure

In keeping with the demands of a digital world, the school invested in some much-needed upgrades to its instructional technology infrastructure; most notably, the Internet and phone system. Increased Internet bandwidth was necessary to maintain smooth connectivity for both students and faculty utilizing iPads for instruction and learning. The Library received a facelift, and a new name – The Media Center – and is now complemented by the new CIT, which boasts tools and work-stations for faculty to enhance their technology skills.

With more than 26,000, McAuley has a powerful network – a sisterhood – of accomplished and impactful women who are testament to the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education. Events such as our All-Class Reunion (now the Banner-Year Reunion) and McAuley Hall Induction ceremony provide the impetus for alumnae to return to McAuley to reconnect and celebrate. In particular, during the 2014 Commencement exercises, Cook County Board Commissioner, Bridget Gainer ‘86, was invited to address the graduates. This new element of the graduation ceremony serves to highlight our alumnae achievements, and inspire our graduates with a glimpse of the promising future that awaits them. This last year, we were honored to welcome Dr. Susan McNicholas Rowan, D.D.S., ’76 as the speaker, who shared her wisdom and insight with the next generation of McAuley women.

Expanded Cultural Experiences Learning isn’t confined to the classroom at McAuley. In recent, years we’ve expanded the number of cross-curricular, international travel opportunities to places like Costa Rica, Ireland, Italy and Spain. Students travel during spring break, or during the summer to learn about art, science and world languages while being exposed to new places and people. They also have the option to travel domestically to New York, to enrich their appreciation of theatre and art, and to West Virginia to perform service in Appalachian communities.

Your Investment Inspires My Future One Student’s Story

Walking through the main doors on the day of the entrance exam three years ago, I could have never imagined the impact that the words, “I attend Mother McAuley” would have on my life. I clearly remember scanning the sea of faces passing beneath the welcome banner for the Class of 2016 and realizing that they were going to be my new family for the next four years. Only now do I know that the young women in my graduating class are my sisters for life. This distinguishing aspect of a close-knit community was one of the deciding factors when my family and I chose McAuley. I whole-heartedly believe that I would not be the same person before you now if not for the positive influence of both my peers and teachers who treat me as their own daughter. It is because of them that I am able to smile a little more, laugh a lot harder, and chase my dreams further than I ever thought possible. Ever since I stepped foot in McAuley that cold January day, prepared to take the entrance exam, the warmth of the community has overwhelmed my heart. This warmth has strengthened me to run the extra mile by choosing more difficult academic courses and joining my sisters on various service trips. Not only has the Mercy tradition become the main foundation for all of my endeavors thus far, but it has also developed my character.

Three years ago, I was a timid young girl, often following instead of leading. Now, I am a confident young woman, always striving to lead by example and live up to the standards that Mother McAuley has set for me. The exemplary college preparatory courses, various extracurricular activities, and exuberance of McAuley students and faculty have radically altered my life course. My education at Mother McAuley has influenced me to pursue a double major in English and Theology with the prospect of teaching students, a dream I would have never realized if not for the patient teachers who have corrected numerous grammatical errors, or the beautiful school liturgies organized by Campus Ministry. Needless to say, attending such an outstanding liberal arts high school would not have been possible had I not received the Board of Trustees Scholarship. Despite the multiple opportunities for financial aid, my parents would not have been able to pay even half of the tuition. We are deeply grateful for generous benefactors who have dedicated money and time to provide young women a quality, Catholic education. Such dedication demonstrates to us students that we are worth fighting for, and that the future of the world truly lies in our hands. It is because of benefactors that my high school years have been a beautiful journey leading up to a promising future. I cannot fathom the possibility that my dream of attending Mother McAuley may not have come true. From the bottom of my heart, I am so very grateful for my Mother McAuley liberal arts education – an advantage that will truly last a lifetime.

Donor Voices I am a McAuley Girl.

It’s an identity one never really outgrows. In our early days, as we learned about “the argument,” “syllogisms” and ”insight,” we somehow knew our intellectual lives would never be the same. By the time we were seniors, having gained a confidence in thinking and communicating that would last a lifetime, we were ready for any challenge. Most recently, I have come to know some enthusiastic students whose McAuley tuition is supported by a local foundation. McAuley continues to be a top high school choice among this Foundation’s 8th grade scholars. And why? Because they know McAuley Girls too, and they want to be part of that same life-changing experience. It is still here and still strong. That is why I continue to be passionate about Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. CAROL GROESBECK SULLIVAN ‘68 has enjoyed life on the Mother McAuley campus since she first entered as a freshman in 1964. She returned to Mother McAuley to teach freshman and senior English in 1977/78. She later opted to pursue a career in investment management, one that has spanned the last 31 years. She currently is Senior Vice President at Northern Trust Asset Management. Carol served on the Mother McAuley Finance Committee in 1989 and subsequently on the Board of Trustees for the following six years, serving the last two as Chair. In 2015 she was named a Mother McAuley Life Trustee. She has been on the Catholic Charities Board of Advisors since 2000 and also serves on the Investment Committee.

Fran and Patricia (Pat) Houlihan know first-hand the difference a Catholic education can make. Both are products of Catholic schooling, having graduated from Saint Kilian’s grade school. Fran attended Mount Carmel High School, while Pat attended The Academy of Our Lady, and their four daughters – Kathy, Mary, Maureen and Aileen – all attended Mother McAuley. “Each of my daughters received an excellent education at McAuley which provided a strong foundation for them to go on to college and become successful in their careers and other roles” says Fran. They all are good Christians who are close to their faith and supportive of one another, and I think much of that was fostered early on at McAuley.” Fran and Pat have remained strong supporters of Mother McAuley. They are members of the Catherine McAuley Giving Society -- benefiting Mother McAuley. “No child should be denied a Catholic education because of lack of funds,” says Fran. “I believe as Christians, we have an obligation to give something back, and this giving back can take many forms. We instilled the philosophy of ‘giving back’ in our girls and that idea was reinforced by the Sisters of Mercy,” he continues. “The school provides an exceptional Catholic education; has a well-rated academic program; there are loads of extra-curricular activities for the girls, and an outstanding athletic program as evidenced by its multiple state championship titles. McAuley remains the largest Catholic girls’ school in the nation, and that says something. To me, it’s just a great school, with even greater people.” FRAN HOULIHAN is former chairperson of the Mother McAuley Board of Trustees, and was named a Life Trustee in 2014. Grant Updates In addition to generous support from donors, Mother McAuley continues to be the beneficiary of many grants that support our students, faculty and programs. The school was blessed with these significant grant awards throughout the 2014-15 academic year.

Sisters of Mercy of the West Midwest Community

Support for the Center for Innovative Teaching

The Sisters of Mercy funded a major portion of our Student Support Services. These services include the counseling program which provides needed assistance to students challenged with any number of issues that may negatively impact their academic standing. The students who benefit from this program express great appreciation for the assistance.

Our new Center for Innovative Teaching received two sizable grant awards which resulted in partial funding for this initiative. The Fred Brunner Foundation contributed $25,000 as did the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation. The Brunner Foundation has supported Mother McAuley programs for the past three years. We are grateful to the Birch Foundation, a new funder, for also joining our cause.

Foundation Awards to Fund Student Tuition Foundation awards allowed us to extend much needed scholarship support to students at every grade level. A total of $47,500 was received from four foundations. • For the second consecutive year, the Helen Brach Foundation supported our Sr. Agatha O’Brien Memorial scholars. • The Dr. Scholl Foundation and the Owens Foundation each provided several students and families with partial tuition funding. • The Mazza Family Foundation initiated a new scholarship fund for five of our incoming freshmen.

Napleton Family Foundation Mary Klingenberger was instrumental in securing a grant award from the Napleton Family Foundation to fund a new trophy case for the Athletic Department. The case is a beautiful enhancement to our Athletic foyer entrance. This is important in going forward with a hoped-for expansion of the Athletic Center to include a comprehensive fitness center.

Support for Student Health and Wellness The Physical Education Department submitted a grant to the professional organization, The Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to which three of our faculty members belong. They received full funding for heart monitors which are useful in teaching students how to monitor their heart rate as they engage in physical activity.

Operation Teen Safe Driving Grant For the 8th consecutive year the Counseling Department secured the Operation Teen Safe Driving grant award from the State of Illinois and the Ford Motor Company. The grant funds are used to educate McAuley young women on the importance of developing safe driving habits. As students become more aware of their own driving skills they gain a sharper awareness of the role and responsibilities of parents in monitoring the driving habits of their children. It is a win-win program for all involved.

Throughout its history, Mother McAuley has honored its founding commitment to providing a liberal arts, college-preparatory Catholic education – seeped in the Mercy traditions – to young women, regardless of financial ability to pay full tuition. Between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014, thanks to the generosity of donors, 59 percent of students received financial assistance. We are grateful to the alumnae, parents and friends who have generously established or contributed to endowed and annual scholarship funds, ensuring that all young women benefit from the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education.
