The Right To Have Rights

It’s been 39 years since the Supreme Court ruled abortion legal, and the debate is just as heated as ever By Ericka Johnson Mr. President on Roe v. Wade President Obama gave this statement at his speech for the Roe v. Wade anniversary: “As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a woman’s health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right. While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue—no matter what our views, we must stay united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant woman and mothers, reduce the need for abortion, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption. And as we remember this historic anniversary, we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams. ”

8  |  JAYE  |  Februay 7, 2012

 January 22 marked the anniversary of the 1973 landmark decision in the Roe v. Wade case by the United States Supreme Court to make abortion legal in America, within the first trimester and ensuring a women’s right to privacy and the right to choose. The Roe decision defined “viable” as being “potentially able to live outside the mother’s womb, albeit with artificial aid,” and viability “is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks) but may occur earlier, at 24 weeks.” The decision divided the country into pro-life and pro-choice camps and many grassroots organizations formed on both sides.   Even today, 39 years after

the ruling was issued the topic of abortion, contraception, and sex education are hot-button topics that often stir up heavy debates. During the time surrounding the anniversary of Roe people hold pro-choice and pro-life rallies, both sides arguing why and why the ruling should not be reversed.   In this election year, abortion is once again, front and center at the top of the list of hot-button social issues, with the GOP pledging to work to reverse Roe v. Wade and the President Obama promising to keep Roe in place so that women may have privacy and control in their lives.   The remaining Republican presidential hopefuls want

What Does a 39-Year-Old Court Case Have to Do With You? According to the U.S Department of Justice, every 21 hours at least one student is raped. What if Roe v. Wade is overturned and an unwanted pregnancy that ensued from a violent sexual

encounter? Well, you would have no rights, protection or assistance, because the GOP presidential hopefuls and other pro-life activists want to abolish Planned Parenthood, which helps all women in need, providing emotional and medical assistance.

to see the ruling overturned, with Rick Santorum taking the staunched pro-life position of the candidates, which would in turn make it illegal to seek out an abortion clinic in the event of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger. Having the ruling overturned could also wipe out funds for in vitro, and stem cell research. So, couples who are looking to get pregnant, not terminate, could lose the right to seek out medical options to procreate. Many ethical questions come into question when it comes to the woman who is with child—willingly or non-willingly—who actually has the right here? The fetus or the women, who, in the eyes of some is just seen as less of a person and a murder for making a decision that is private, not one that concerns the general pubic. 

#SOTU 2012: President Obama says, “Pay Your Fair Share”

Supporters and critics alike had plenty to say about Mr. President’s yearly address By Ericka Johnson President Obama delivered his annual State of The Union speech, covering many topics that are of concern, using this year’s address to segue into his plans to build a stronger, more competitive America, if elected for a second term.   The biggest take-away of the speech was about the “Buffet rule,”—named after Warren Buffet, the Omaha billionaire that complained of paying less in taxes than his secretary—if passed through Congress, it would make individuals earning $1 million or more in gross income a year to pay a minimum tax rate of 30 percent. And as Obama put it, “You can call this class warfare all you want,” he said, aiming at Republican critics. “But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? The Post-Sex Snoozefest

Insight to what happens after a roll in the hay By Michael Jones Researchers may have found an answer to why it’s so frustrating when your man immediately falls asleep after nooky. According to a recent study by psychologists at the University of Michigan and Albright College in Pennsylvania, the tendency to fall asleep first after sex is associated with greater partner desire for bonding and affection.   “The more one's partner was likely to fall asleep after sex, the stronger the desire for bonding," explains Daniel Kruger, research

fellow at the University of Michigan and lead author of the study.   Researchers discovered that participants whose partners nodded off immediately after sex had stronger desires for post-coital cuddling and chatting. "Falling asleep before one's partner may be a non-conscious way to foreclose on any commitment conversation after sex," says co-author Susan Hughes, associate professor of psychology at Albright College in Reading, Pa.   Another interesting tidbit: Despite the common stereotype, the researchers did not find it more common for men to fall asleep first after sex. Women, however, were more likely to fall asleep first when sex hadn't taken place.

Sex News Research reveals that married couples experience few advantages for psychological well-being, health, or social ties compared to unmarried couples who live together. Why aren‘t we getting married? Research by demographers at Cornell University and the University of Central Oklahoma says it’s because we fear divorce. Among cohabitating couples, more than two-thirds of the study's respondents admitted to concerns about dealing with the social, legal, emotional and economic consequences of a possible divorce.

The Front  health  We’ve all heard the ole trusty “get lots of vitamin C” tactic to avoiding the infamous cold, but what are some lesser known methods to stay happy and healthy this winter? JAYE discovers it has a lot to do with what you eat (and drink!): Bundle up. “Our bodies restrict blood flow to the extremities when we get cold to help conserve body heat for the torso and brain, which really need to be warm,” says Cardiff University professor Ron Eccles. “Cutting off the blood flow reduces the supply of white blood cells which are the immune system’s primary weapon against germs,” adds Eccles, who also works at Cardiff’s Common Cold Center. Always put on layers when you expect to be outside for more than a few minutes and make sure to keep your feet covered (a great excuse to finally get those boots you’ve been dreaming about!). Cut back on sugar! Sugar depletes your immune system. Having just two cans of soda (which, by the way, contains 24 teaspoons!) reduces white blood cells, the cells in your blood that fight off infections, by 92 percent! This immune system weakness lasts up to five hours, according to Kenneth Bock, M.D., an expert in nutritional and environmental health.

Out Damned Cold!

While the winter months encourage stylish boots and fun layering, they also bring an increase in bed-ridden colds and the abominable flu. Let your classmates stay home due to cold weather sicknesses and follow this simple guide to stay healthy this winter By Megan Elliott Drink less alcohol. Over time, alcohol slowly breaks down your immune system, making chronic drinkers prone to illness. And when they do get sick, it usually takes them longer to heal since long-term alcohol consumption can harm the body's ability to respond to stressors like illness or injury. Think about it: When you drink, your mind gets blurry, your reflexes are off, and it is more difficult to complete simple tasks (like walking in those 5 inch stilettos). Alcohol has that same weakening effect on your immune system over time. Wash your hands. Germs are everywhere and washing your hands often helps a lot in warding off those germs. “Every time you shake someone’s hand, wash yours. But don’t stop there. Wash them as much as possible,” says Mark Mengel, MD, chair of community and family medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Since more people tend to be sick during the winter

months, keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag and use it after touching doorknobs, your desk, or a public computer. Get your beauty sleep. Get a couple extra hours under the sheets each night to keep your body alert and ready to fight. Health.com agrees, “you need more z’s when you’re feeling under the weather. When you’re tired, your body isn’t fighting as hard.” Dr. Mengel suggests getting around eight to ten hours of shut-eye. Stick to healthy foods. Strengthening your immune system during prime cold and flu season is vital, so make healthy diet choices by replacing comfort food with a salad or some fruits. Upping your fruit and veggie intake prevents the common cold from attacking since they support your immune system, according to Jeff Robertson, MD, and chief medical officer for health insurer Regence.

Drink hot liquids. It has the same effect as mom’s ‘gargling hot salt water’ remedy. Colds and flus wait around in your mouth and nose for about three days until they are ready to take over your body. Drinking things like coffee, hot tea, or even soup take the germs downtown where they can’t grow. Hot soups also work, and for even better results, add some cayenne to make your nose run and clear out those germs as well! Make out! When you and your man give each other your germs, it actually helps strengthen your immune system by giving your body’s natural defenses some solid practice. Not to mention the blissful endorphins that are released from a good makeout session. Having sex also helps keep you healthy. According to Planet Green by Discovery, “performed once a week, sex has been shown to increase immunoglobulin A (IgA) production, an immune-boosting protein.” 

The Front  time management  students are spreading themselves too thinly between academics, extracurriculars, and jobs, and according to the National College Health Association, 57 percent report feeling a “more than average” to a “tremendous amount” of stress. Luckily, JAYE has the top three ways to guarantee some you time and end up with recreation, relaxation and rest. Buy a Planner. Purchasing a calendar or planner is the ultimate way to start preventing anxiety. Not only will using this minicalendar keep your obligations in order and allow you to officially pencil in personal time, but the fun designs will also keep you smiling and relaxed as you flip through every organized page. Hold On To Your Passions. Too many students give up doing what they love to pursue what they think is more important in their career field. However, if you’re working hard in class, at work, and in any other obligatory commitments, it is absolutely imperative that you make time for at least one personal activity. Whether it’s playing an instrument, writing poetry, or playing a club sport,

Mo’ Jobs, Mo’ Problems?

More Americans are working two-plus jobs to make ends meet. While some think it’s a win for the economy, others suggest we need better gigs, not more of them By Michael Jones Tackle your taxes in no time US News rounded up three money- and time-saving tax apps. The lowdown on the top picks:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the number of part-time workers in the United States working reduced hours because they couldn’t get full-time work or had their hours reduced by their employers, declined by 371,000 to 8.1 million in December. The same report also revealed more Americans are working multiple jobs to make ends meet: More than 7 million Americans were working two or more jobs in December, according to the BLS. Do the Grammy Awards Still Matter?

Music’s highest honor has faced its fair share of criticsm raising the question of its importance of the industry’s judgment on who’s the best of the best. Brittney Fennell reports The music industry’s highest honor is the Grammy Awards. The 54th annual ceremony will take place live on February 12 at 8 p.m. on CBS. Even though the Grammys hold such a high stature in the music industry, it has faced its fair share of criticism from not only artists, but fans alike. The most common criticism is that the Hip-Hop/Rap categories still aren’t televised despite the impact the culture has had worldwide.   Last year’s memorable moment involved teen sensation Justin Bieber and Esperanza Spalding, a newcomer on the jazz scene. Both were up for the Best New Artist award, and Bieber was seen as a

favorite among many to win. In an upset, Spalding was crowned Best New Artist, which left her fans cheerful and Justin’s “Beliebers” in an uproar. It can be argued that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), who votes for the Grammy winners, don’t fit the demographic of Bieber’s target audience, which mostly consists of teenage girls, but that didn’t stop advertising guru and former record executive, Steve Stoute, from buying a fullpage ad in a Sunday edition of The New York Times, to pen an open letter to NARAS and its president Neil Portnow to express his observations of how mediocre the award

show was turning out to be.   In the letter, Stoute accused the Grammys of having a popular show that went against its own voting system. It didn’t recognize the cultural impact of the artists they were snubbing, such as Eminem, Kanye West and the aforementioned Bieber, who have all performed at the Grammy ceremony, but didn’t walk away with its top awards. Eminem’s 2001 album, The Marshall Mathers LP, sold 10 million copies in the U.S. and lost the Album of the Year Award to Steely Dan. In 2008, West’s Graduation album lost to Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters.   When this year’s nominations for the Grammys were

announced, there were more knocks thrown at the academy’s way when Jay-Z and Kanye West’s album Watch the Throne was shut out. And artists Jill Scott and Miguel took to Twitter to express their displeasure of not receiving any nominations.   As much as people scrutinize the Grammys for its voting system as opposed to the show’s production and how artists are chosen as nominees, what it all boils down to is that the award are seen as the zenith of industry awards. Once an artist is awarded that golden gramophone the words “Grammy Award-winner” and will precede their name throughout their career.   Anybody that knows me knows that I love award shows. Why? It’s because I get to see all my favorite stars in one room and sometimes even on stage. As a huge fan, I have a special love for music-based award shows. You never know what to expect with performances and sometimes the winners aren’t always obvious. Do the Grammy Awards still hold the same stature for music lovers, and will you be watching the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12?  JAYE  |  February 7, 2012  |  23

Bitter Pill to Swallow

Research shows that prescription drug use has more than quadrupled since 2008 as students fight depression, anxiety and the pressure to excel in the academic and corporate arenas. Virginia Schuler shares her run-in with a cocktail of high-risk meds

college life ď ˇ drugs

Prescription drugs are easily accessible (and relatively cheap) on college campuses, but can be dangerous and highly addictive.

college life  drugs At the age of twenty, I was diagnosed with the disorder. I couldn’t help but wonder why I had never heard this news before. Surely I had visited my fair share of therapists throughout adolescence to be treated for depression, but no one had ever dubbed my brain as anything other than serotonin deficient. Since this psychiatrist was the first and only to diagnose me with ADHD, I was very skeptical and a little angry. Nonetheless, excitement trumped any of my negative reactions—this meant that I could finally get my hands on one of the most highly demanded drugs among college campuses. Adderall perhaps? Nope. Doctors have been prescribing them faster than they can be legally manufactured and the drug’s obscene popularity has resulted in a pill shortage. I’d have to settle for Concerta. My excitement didn’t diminish by much though. After all, I had experienced the adrenalin rush of this drug before.   Three to five percent of college students have been diagnosed with ADHD. But that misleading number doesn’t even begin to account for the true number of students taking ADHD medication. My friend Amie* and I would fall under the realm of each statistical component. We both currently have prescriptions for ADHD medication, but as campus dwellers with easy access for drugs such as Adderall, Concerta or Ritalin, we also occasionally self-medicate before receiving official diagnoses.   Amie, who got a prescription a year before I did, had given me some. They were magical—until I went to sleep. Oh wait, that never happened. Not one wink. As I restlessly stared up at the ceiling, I reprimanded myself for taking an upper. But that moment didn’t stop me from test-driving Adderall a couple of months down the road. It was finals week of my freshman year in college, and the demand for ADHD medication went through the roof. I felt lucky enough to get my hands on two 10-mg pills.   Once the avalanche of mild amphetamines hit my nervous system, I thought I had discovered the miracle drug. I was invincible in the face of my jam-packed day full of studying. I would go straight to the library and power through pages upon pages of my Evolution and History of Life textbook. Amie’s first experience taking Adderall was slightly similar to mine. She recounted how, on the first day of her senior year of high school, she had taken some and subsequently, “spent the rest of the day in the art room working on a project. I received a detention for skipping my classes. The work turned out really well, though.”   By the time I settled into my study alcove, the drug’s effects *Name has been changed. 32  |  JAYE  |  February 7, 2012

dwindled, but I still had a little extra kick pulsing through my veins. I’ll spare the trivial details of my scholastic experience and fast-forward to the day’s end. My energy didn’t crash, but my mood did. Within roughly eight hours, I transformed from Sunshine Sally to Sour Sandra. I publicly lashed out at one of my guy friends in a way that I wouldn’t have under normal circumstances, and that was the culmination of one of the most exhilarating, but stressful days—my nerves were completely strung out.   Between my first Adderall escapade and the day I got prescribed Concerta, I intermittently bought ADHD pills from other students. If I had to stay up all night to finish writing a ten-pager, then Concerta or Ritalin were a godsend, but my body would suffer the after-effects during the following days. One time I had some extra Adderall, five mg or so, and I decided to snort it. I had heard taking it this way played out like a mild cocaine dosage. Well, I was wrong. It didn’t give me the desired rush. It did, however, give me a sinus infection. About five days after snorting the pulverized pill, I projected a cluster of blue (the color of Adderall) snot into a tissue. I held in my hand visual proof that I had been an idiot for abusing my body. But despite this, I was still thrilled to receive my very own prescription. No more dropping five dollars on a single According to SoberLiving. com, college students aged 18-22 were twice as likely to abuse Adderall than non-students from the same age group.

10-mg pill.   I pointed out to Amie that I can usually find a way to remedy my cloudy mood, but that an ADHD pill induced slump is virtually unconquerable. We agreed that no amount of chocolate could remedy the conglomeration of paranoia, anxiety, and hopelessness of an Adderall crash, and Amie added that it sometimes made her “go crazy” and that it made it difficult for her to breathe.   I too, adapted a steadier reaction to ADHD medication. When I first started taking Concerta at the beginning of this school year, I built up a partial tolerance after about a week of regular consumption. This meant that the superabundance of energy and feelings of euphoria didn’t hit me like a blissful explosion, nor did the mood decline feel intolerable. Over the course of the month that I took Concerta, I was, however, consistently more irritable. So, I decided not to refill that prescription.   When the end of the semester rolled around, I began taking a different ADHD medication to help me manage with finals. This time I got a prescription for the fast-release drug Focalin. As opposed to gradual-release drugs, Focalin would only stay in my system for six hours. I would be able to precisely clock out at the end of my anxious feelings. The vile of Focalin, which

“My energy didn’t crash, but my mood did. Within roughly eight hours, I transformed from Sunshine Sally to Sour Sandra.”

Flying High For college students the pressure of balancing school work and their social lives often gets too consuming. Commonly, students turn to prescription drugs to get a high that eventually leads to a negative path. Rather than waste precious moments in the bottom of a drug bottle, here are other ways to release pent up stress and get that much needed rush that is healthy and positive. According to a SportEngland report, extreme sports help promote and induce repressed emotional feelings. Here are five sports that will get your blood pumping:  White-water kayaking: Akin to white water rafting, this sport only needs one person. The adrenaline rush truly kicks in when trying to adapt to the heavy currents.  Bungee jumping: When you’re

dropping more than 100 feet to the ground, you can’t help but feel a rush. The speed in which you drop plus the nearness of the ground causes a mixture of excitement and empowerment.  Parasailing: While attached to a boat, you are winged off into the air as the boat moves at a high speed. The relationship between height and speed are sure to create a necessary spike to get your pressure up.  Skydiving: As you are suspended in the air for the briefest of seconds, you are sure to feel an instant high. Individuals immediately feel the rush once they exit the plane and begin to float on air. This is great for those who are the ultimate risk-takers.  Snowboarding: This fun and exciting sport will guarantee you feeling an intense rush after sliding down that hill. –Ivie Igbeare

should have lasted for three or four months, only lasted me one. I found myself doubling or tripling my allotted dosage every single day for four weeks. I’m relieved that my supply ran out, because I was slipping into dependence. I’ve realized that my ability to employ moderation disappears when faced with these highly addictive drugs.   Contrastly, Amie says that she only takes them as needed and that she never finishes her is entire prescription, perhaps explaining why her experience has been more even-keeled than mine.   ADHD debilitates students when they don’t know how to cope with it, and medications have the potential to help. If you don’t force yourself to focus your energy, you could end up spending all day color coordinating your closet or doing Sudoku puzzles. For people like me, who veer toward the extreme, they may not be the answer. Unlike other medications, you can safely use ADHD pills on an irregular basis, which may even help prevent addiction. I know how easily these drugs can make me spiral out of control, both while under the influence and in terms of consumption. However, if you exercise moderation, as does Amie, they may help improve your life.   I recently inquired how Amie’s experience taking ADHD medication had been coming along, she says Concerta helps her focus on school work, resulting in an overall positive impact on his life. I asked if she ever felt tempted to take her ADHD medication for recreational purposes and she responded, “It does give me a slight hint of euphoria, but nothing worthwhile. I never understood how people abused it. It is weak sauce on the drug scale.” 

Having a 36  |  JAYE  |  February 7, 2012

quick chat with those who genuinely love and have the best intentions for you will allow you to find that inner happiness. 4. Pray or Meditate English religious poet Francis Quarles said, “Meditation is the life of the soul: Action, the soul of meditation and honor the reward of action.” Finding an internal peace through meditating, praying, or a mixture of both allows us to locate our inner sanctuary. From here happiness resonates and will radiate. Whenever there is a feeling of being overwhelmed or stress, a powerful meditation or praying session is beneficial; it clears the mind

while also nourishing the soul. Invest in Iyanla Vanzant, Ph.D.’s self-help guide, “One Day My Soul Just Happened Up” as a jumpstart into meditating through life lessons. 5. Treat Yourself Well You are worth some dedication, pampering and attention. Whether it’s a facial or massage at the local spa or investing in a water aerobics class, take some time this month to cater to yourself. You deserve it. 6. Make New Friends Socializing and acquainting with new people opens us to new experiences, cultures, and perspectives that might

have been foreign to us before. This month, take time to meet and accept new friends; have date nights with them, and find happiness in these new cultivated bonds. 7. Start a Vegetable or Flower Garden Renowned author Alice Walker regarded her mother’s vegetable garden as a masterpiece. Gardening was her mother’s art and she found solace in it. You might find gardening to be as peaceful and relaxing as Walker’s mother did. Though it might be bitter cold and the skies might be bombarded with snow clouds, begin planning for a garden this month. Venture to the local farmer’s

markets and purchase seeds that will be planted in the spring or join a local gardening club with a garden that hasn’t bloomed, but is in the process of being planted. Watching plants sprout from small seeds into giant beauties might be a means of finding happiness. 8. Watch the Sunset or the Sunrise Often, our lives are so consumed with the chaos of our schedules that we don’t take time to appreciate the sunrise or the sunset. Being able to watch this simple moment in nature while relaxing and enjoying a non-alcoholic cocktail gives us time to reflect and decide on how to love ourselves and

what happiness encompasses. Watching a sunset might be the breakthrough that you have been waiting for since 2012 began. 9. Have a “Favorites” Movie Marathon Ever watched “Love Jones” and “Legally Blonde” in one night with a bag of extra-buttered Orville Redenbachers popcorn? Do it this month. Cuddle up with a blanket, two pillows, and a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough for a night filled with your favorite films. 10. Keep a Happy Journal For the entire month, maintain a journal of blissful moments, both

large and small. Reminiscing on these moments in times of sadness helps to recall happier emotions. You might be surprised at what puts a permanent smile on your face. 11. Volunteer at a Local Shelter There are few things in life which increase gratitude and blessings more than volunteering at local shelters. Assisting the disadvantaged and hearing their disheartening tales would soften the hardest Grinch heart. So, if you are experiencing sadness this month, volunteer at a local shelter or food bank. You’ll leave with a new perspective on life and a greater appreciation for life’s

smallest gifts, such as housing and food. 12. Enroll in Dance Lessons Burn some pounds and learn some sizzling new steps this month with dance lessons from a professional instructor. You’ll get to hone a new passion while also enjoying the closeness of dancing with a male partner. 13. Learn a New Craft If cooking, sewing, or even beading is something that you have been interested in learning but have never had time to practice, find time in February to acquire that new skill. You might end the month preparing a fivecourse meal for friends or Take time to savor the simple pleasures, such as looking out of the window into the night.

20. Take a Day Off Often, taking time off from life is easier said than done. But, sometimes a brief sabbatical from life is necessary to restore and heal that what we believe to be broken. During this time off, do whatever your heart desires, as long as it doesn’t involve strenuous work or stress. 21. Perform Random Acts of Kindness It doesn’t have to be the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to perform random acts of kindness. Hug someone who appears sad or offer to purchase someone lunch. Doing for others without an expectation of reciprocation allows us to tap into our charitable spirit.

15. Visit Favorite Places Alone You might love the aquarium or the local museum, but haven’t visited it in a while due to work or school obligations. But, if single this month, visit those favorite places alone and remember why you came to love them to begin with. Finding that inner peace while viewing paintings at the free art galleries might be exactly what is needed to begin the trek to happiness. 16. Go to Zumba Your heart will be racing after an intense Zumba session, but moving those hips to the music will release repressed stress, anger, and even loneliness. After a hot bath, complete with the Epsom salt and a relaxing night’s rest, the beautiful after effects of Zumba will begin to surface. You’ll feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Ignore the sore-

that promote happiness such as encouraging posters and funky shot glasses with empowering messages on them. Share it with friends and relatives; hopefully, some of them will be kind enough to purchase items from the list. 18. Write and Mail a Card

powers will be a welcomed treat. 19. Find Your Muse We all have a muse, whether we’ve discovered it or not. For some of us, it’s writing while for others it’s singing, volunteering, or skiing. The muse should be something that we can do, read, or see

22. Find Your Happiness Trigger According to TimesWellness.com, we all possess happiness triggers, which are something in our lives that automatically releases endorphins to our brains. Once that happiness trigger is found, it is essential to allow that to evolve into a regular feature of life. So, whenever there is sadness or depression, the trigger will bring emotions into balance, creating happiness. In February, find that happiness

When you feel better, you do better! Take the time to invest in your health with regular exercise.

trigger and pull it. 23. Plan a Dream Vacation You might not have the funds for a dream vacation, but planning it is as simple as Googling a location, finding prices for airfare, hotel, and expenses, and organizing a plan to evolve this dream into fruition. Setting an ultimate goal and then planning towards it gives most of us a great sense of accomplishment; so plan, a dream vacation. 24. Stand For Your Beliefs No two people are passionate about all of the same things, but we are all passionate about something. Find a cause and get

involved in it through local chapter groups or by donating money to the organization that is fighting against the issue. Regardless of the nature of the cause, this might range from animal cruelty to abortion, get involved and begin to make a difference. 25. Hit the Gym Exercising releases endorphins, which increases adrenaline and happiness. So, whether it is swimming, running, or kickboxing, begin working on that bikini waistline this month. Sweat off the depression and the sadness. 26. Shop Until You Drop Some oppose retail therapy,

but according to Oprah.com, it is one of the best remedies against the winter blues. Bundling up and heading to the local thrift store or the mall will both increase the size of the wardrobe and build your confidence. Looking better equates to feeling sexier, so hit the racks with a vengeance. 27. Forgive Now Let go of past baggage this month and begin living with purpose. This begins with forgiveness. Find an inner peace and realize that it’s impossible to find happiness and focus on the good things in life when there is still hurt lingering from past experiences. Practice forgiveness

and allow it to set you free. 28. Live in the Moment The past doesn’t have to be defining and the future will occur when we get there. It is essential to live in the present and to be alive in the moment. This allows us to make the most out of each second, minute, hour, week, month, and years. Start now. 29. Choose to Be Happy Happiness is a state of mind which is chosen. You have to elect to be happy in order for it happen. For some this is much easier than it is for others, but the fact remains that happiness is a choice. Be happy this month and always! ď ˇ

education  rants Undergraduates are working harder than ever to be the best in hopes of nab a tolerable job in our struggling economy. And as if students aren’t stressed enough, what happens on campuses when every move is regulated? Students at schools such as Springfield College, Fordham University, and Bennett College are suffocating under the outdated and unexplained policies. After much interviewing and research, JAYE has the scoop on how undergraduates

physical lives are interconnected.” Though the general theory is widely accepted and praised among students, many are frustrated by a few arbitrary rules. For example, the college refuses to let students walk on the grass—under any circumstances. The official explanation? Students shouldn’t cut corners on campus because they shouldn’t cut corners in life. While it’s irritating based on convenience alone, other students are frustrated on a slightly more practi-

name, and fabulous location for students. However, what you may not realize is that while the city scene might be great for socializing, the dorm situation is quite the opposite. Buildings and floors are separated by gender, all guests are required to sign in and out, and resident advisers monitor any visitors who are of the opposite sex as their host. Guests of the opposite sex may never sleep over, company must be signed out by 3:30 a.m., and violations of any dorm policy

NC. There are a total of 780 enrolled students, and all are required to follow the strict rules implemented by the administration. For example, Bennett combines the severity of the rules at Fordham and Springfield: Males cannot visit the dorms before 6:00 p.m., and they are required to leave by 11:45 p.m. Additionally, there is no walking on the grass, and all freshmen must contact their parents after a certain time if they desire to leave the campus on weekends. Springfield student Lindsay Hutchinson tweets: “Takes 10x longer to get anywhere because I can’t just cut across the center of campus. #suckstosuck @SpfldColProbz.” When asked about how student behavior responds to these inconvenient rules, Crampton laughably explained that they tend to rebel in their own little ways.

Christine Simaitis explains, “They cheat the system… friends sign guests in…[hosts] sneak them in...[and guests] hide when RAs come into the apartments.” Even students at Bennett agree that the excessive guidelines lead to negative consequences. Clark explains, “I don’t think that most students like…[these] rules, which makes them want to rebel.” The Changes There has been much debate over the past few years regarding revisions to college policies involving dorms, partying, and general student independence. Barnard College in New York City is a prime example of students rising to the occasion. After recently revising its housing policy, Barnard has seen students thrive and enjoy the relatively

Everyone learns quickly how to behave appropriately, and there haven’t been any problems (that I know of) with students…and guests spending the night.” Even small, liberal arts school Wheaton College (MA) has made some serious changes to its alcohol policy. Discipline has been mostly removed and replaced with an amnesty policy of education and treatment.   With more and more campuses following suit, students everywhere are speaking up to their administrators, campus life coordinators, and residence life offices. Acting responsibly and proving to be capable and mature can go a long way in the eyes of the rule-makers. 

just what in the hell is a hipster anyway? Authorities from across the country weigh in on their different perspectives of the trend by Toni Mafa

According to our experts, there’s more to being a hipster than having “obscure music taste, wacky sense of fashion, and a moody demeanor.”

culture  labels

I

n a recent NPR article called “The Hipsterfication of America,” Linton Weeks spoke with Peter Furia, a founder of Seedwell Digital Creative Studio in San Francisco. Furia asserts that “hipster culture... dominates fashion, music and lifestyle. It crosses borders of ethnicity, socio-economic status and sexual preference something that we haven’t seen since the boom of hip-hop culture.”   To some, this look and lifestyle is easy to identify and even easier to make fun of. Furia goes on to say, “What’s funny is that people who aren’t hipsters generally express distaste for them, and those who appear to be hipsters hate to be identified as such. Everybody hates hipsters... especially hipsters.”   Apparently, no one wants to be associated with “Hipsterdom,” but the trend is omnipresent, so the question remains: What is the real definition of a true American hipster? Is this ever-growing fad as superficial as some people perceive, or is there something more substantive to the phenomenon? Various youths from all over the country voice their attitudes towards this ubiquitous new craze. JAYE: What do you think are the defining characteristics of a hipster as it is perceived today? Have these evolved

44  |  JAYE  |  February 7, 2012

since the dawning of the hipster? Kristy Choi: To the sensible shoes-wearing Mainstream Marissa, these are probably the defining characteristics of a modern-day hipster: obscure music taste, wacky sense of fashion, and a moody demeanor. Then there is the stereotype that hipsters are people who try really hard to create an aloof and apathetic image; they don’t want to seem like they care too much about anything. For example, let’s say Hipster Holly secretly thinks Beyoncé is super inspiring, but she doesn’t want people to think she has mainstream musical taste. So, she goes to Beyoncé’s concert under the facade that she’s being “ironic.” While everyone else is jamming really hard, Holly is probably bopping her head unenthusiastically (even though inside, Holly knows how to do the entire “Single Ladies” dance). In all seriousness, I think that at its core, Hipsterdom is about a different way of seeing the world. It’s just that today a lot of people associate it with a way of dressing and consuming, rather than a perspective. I learned this while writing my hipster musical. See, a theme emerged as we kept on thinking of hipsterrelated jokes. All the punch

The Experts: Kristy Choi: Kristy attends Brown University,

which, according to the Huffington Post, is one of the 10 “hippest” colleges in the country. This year, Kristy and a friend both wrote an original musical about hipsters, called “A Musical So Obscure You Probably Haven’t Heard of It: A Hipster Fairytale.”

Rachel Wiegand: Rachel is a musician and an

English student from Seattle, who now lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Urban Dictionary attests, “the greatest concentration of hipsters can be found living in Williamsburg” (and only two other cities in the U.S.).

Molly McCambridge: Molly studies film and

modern dance at a tiny liberal arts school in rural Virginia. She has “an untrained love of photography and insatiable love of all things vintage.” Although she associates with being an artist, she does not at all consider herself to be a hipster. Hipsters are known for putting their favorite fashions together in unique ways.

lines were about clothing, music, etc. We concentrated on the things that hipsters own and do, rather than what they think. There’s physical hipsterness and then...I suppose...philosophical hipsterness. Both exist. But I think that pop culture and mainstream humor focus more on the former, and therefore, the hipster stereotype involves things like combat boots and artsy self-portraits. Rachel Wiegand: Hipsters wear old clothes, but have money. They are going for like, a purposeful unkemptness. They wear secondhand whatever. The hipster of today is sort of a mix of hippie, beatnik, rich kid; so yeah, hipster culture has been influenced by all these groups, and over time they’ve meshed and become a new thing altogether. Molly McCambridge: In my opinion, the first wave of hipsters didn’t do what they were doing because they thought it was cool; they were just living according to their own individuality. Then rich kids who wanted to be “edgy” and “artsy” found this cool group of people, called them hipsters and joined in. They learned the right clothes to wear and what music to listen to in order to fit this interesting, arty image. But of course it has evolved since then—it’s become more specific. Right now, the ultimate hipster bible is the Urban Outfitters catalog. The items in it are drenched in cool (ripped tights,

skinny jeans). The catch is, they’re expensive. So, hipsters by nature either have to have money to spare or have to make affording the “right” clothes a major priority. The UO catalog isn’t selling just clothes and furniture though; it’s selling a lifestyle. It’s selling too-thin-for-comfort, coffee cup-holding, oversized sweater-wearing, sevin-inch heel-sporting, film-camera-overthe-shoulder-bearing, bored-looking young people, who just happen to be hiking a mountain—because apparently the outdoors is cool now. So strap on your 7-inch platforms and get hiking if you want to be a hipster. Oh, and don’t forget your holga. JAYE: The hippie movement “Today, a lot of developed from the Vietnam War. Being “punk” stemmed people from the popularization of associate bands like Pearl Jam. Where hipsterdom do you think the hipster trend with a way of developed from? KC: I am a serious academic dressing and scholar, so I am going to cite consuming, Wikipedia now: “Initially, rather than a hipsters were usually middleperspective.” class white youths seeking to emulate the lifestyle of the largely black jazz musicians they followed. In The Jazz Scene (1959), author Eric Hobsbawm (originally writing under the pen name Francis Newton) described hipster language... as ‘an argot or cant designed to set the group apart from outsiders.’ However, the subculture rapidly expanded, and after World War II, a burgeoning literary scene grew up around it. Jack Kerouac described 1940s hipsters as ‘rising and roaming America, bumming and hitchhiking everywhere [as] characters of a special spirituality.’   So hipsterdom in the first half of the 1900s was more about separating from the status quo: Writing beat poetry, burning bras and hitchhiking across the country. I do think there are still hipsters like this. But nowadays, people link hipsters to clothes, music, and other parts of the commercial world. This is decidedly contradictory to the anti-commercialism intent of the first group of hipsters. However, both the first and current hipsters share an inclination towards artistic expression. This makes sense, since the creation of new things is a sure way to detach one’s self from the old. JAYE: What makes someone “hipper” than someone else? KC: The stereotype is that hipsters are people who don’t care

culture  labels about anything; thus the less you care, the hipper you are. I agree to a certain extent. I think that “hip” people are those that definitely don’t care about what’s currently cool, not in an apathetic way but a gung-ho, free-spirited way. This means self-confidence and risk-taking. MM: Being “hip” is a complete projection from other individuals and pop culture. It doesn’t come from inside a person; it comes from external sources. Therefore, what makes someone hipper than someone else is how the people around that person view that person. For example, a girl who works on a dairy farm, only eats local food, and lives in a bohemian studio apartment might be considered to be a hipster on the surface. But she can’t afford Urban Outfitters and isn’t paying attention to her image; she does these so-called “hip” things according to her own desires and what she feels is right. But maybe she’s the hippest person around anyway, because that’s what today’s culture sees her to be. JAYE: Linton Weeks from NPR quotes Peter Furia: “Cities are known for setting trends; hipsterism is about anti-trends. It sounds funny, but hipsters in Omaha may actually be cooler than hipsters in New York City— everyone knows about New York City.” What geographical locations do you think are considered to be hippest and "Being 'hip' is a why? RW: Definitely Portland. Portcomplete land is... what’s the quote... projection from “the city that not very many other people have been to but want individuals and to go to.” MM: I think the answer to this pop culture." question is completely subjective based on who is doing the considering. I would say most of the hippest places are located outside the United States, but maybe that’s just because I see something foreign and unknown as being innately “hip.” JAYE: Is being a hipster a good thing or a farcical thing? Is there such a thing as someone being a “genuine” hipster, or is it all just an image thing? KC: Definitely farcical. But there are some people who don’t try too hard at it and live with a genuine “hipster” mentality. But this person’s I-do-what-I-want mentality would definitely have to manifest itself externally in a quirky fashion for him or her to be identified as “hipster.” Basically, no matter how hipster-y you may think, you can’t dress and live like a soccer mom. You

46  |  JAYE  |  February 7, 2012

have to fit the look. RW: Oh, it’s all an image thing, because it doesn’t stem from something original. Calling someone a “hipster” is what we excuse for people who are all into the same hippie stuff, throwback stuff; it’s an imitation of other things. MM: Being a hipster is completely image-oriented. There’s a difference between going to the local coffee store to support the economy of local business and going just so people can see you walk out the door with your “indie coffee store” to-go cup in hand. There are people who live alternative lifestyles and there are hipsters. They generally don’t mix. JAYE: Can someone be hip without being a hipster? KC: Yes, but sans the scoffs and mocking glances from others—and what’s the fun in that? RW: Yeah for sure. Prime example: Tom Healy, the poet. Look him up. MM: It’s more likely for someone to be authentically hip if they are not a hipster. JAYE: Who is the hippest person you know? KC: If I Google someone on the Internet, that means I know them right? Hippest overall: Meryl Streep (if you question this response...go home and get hip); hippest non-hipster: Hilary Clinton; hippest sense of style: Mary-Kate Olsen; hippest hips: Shakira. (they don’t lie). MM: The hippest person I know is absolutely not a hipster. JAYE: Would you like to provide any tips for how our readers can lead more hipster-ish lives? KC: Attention hipsters: It is really time to stop putting “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” and “First Time of Your Life” on that mix CD for your significant other. RW: Get a tattoo, don’t shower, and specifically don’t watch your hair. And dress in secondhand everything. MM: If you buy anything from Urban Outfitters, you’ll fit right in with the hipsters.  Thrift stores are chock-full of vintage threads that hipsters can’t get enough of.

…Planning a Super Bowl Party use super sunday as an excuse to host a super-sized bash—behold, a guide that’s got every step covered! By Megan Elliott Are you ready for some football?

Although you may not be as excited about the “big game” as some of your guy pals, there are still plenty of reasons to celebrate on February 5, so why not throw your own bash? Not only will you have fun decorating with your BFF, but you’ll have control of the food and drinks being served (and

won’t have to worry about paying for a cab home!).   In case you missed it, the top two teams are the New England Patriots and the New York Giants—both of which have red, white and blue team colors. The Americana theme is one of the easiest to pull off thanks to the basic color scheme.

The Set-Up: Purchase some standard blue and red Solo cups and basic white plates and you’ve already cut your cleanup time down while still sticking to the theme! For cheap and easy decorations, buy some colored paper (red and blue, of course) and draw stars in several different sizes and then cut them out. Loop some

tape on the side with the drawn star. Turn around and stick on wall. Feeling crafty? Cut out team logos or letters. Patriotic decorations are aplenty in any party supply store as well. Tell your friends to wear coordinating colors. Everyone has blue jeans and a white tee, right? To stand out, rock red skinnies and a blue sweater.

The Starters: Next, it’s

time to prepare the food! Since the game starts at 6 p.m. EST, you’ll need to serve your guests a good amount of food, especially if there will be drinking at your party. It’s important to stick with foods that can be prepared ahead of time so you can enjoy your own party. Start with this simple layered dip: Ingredients:  2 cans black beans  3 cups lettuce, shredded  1 onion, chopped  2 tomatos, diced  8 oz. cheddar cheese, shredded Get the party started with a delicious bean dip.

 1 can corn  Salt and pepper to taste To Prepare: Empty cans of black beans into large serving platter. Spread to create a foundation; salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle a thin layer of cheese on top of beans. Next, add lettuce as third layer. Spread diced tomatoes across the top of the dip then add corn. Finally, sprinkle chopped onions for another layer and cover the top with the remaining cheese. Store in refrigerator until your guests arrive. Serve with a bowl of tortilla chips.

You can go wrong with pounds of buffalo wings!

The Main Courses + Desserts: Now, choose something that is easy to eat and aren’t messy. Buffalo chicken bites, chicken tenders and pizza puffs are all tasty options that you can get in any freezer isle. Just pop them in the oven and enjoy the game while they cool! Finally, for dessert, whip up a batch of brownies before the party starts and after they have cooled, cut in the shape of a football. Draw laces in the center and an outline on the outer edge with white icing and you’ve got a cute treat with the best excuse to eat it. Accomodate Your Guests: Now that you’ve got the food and decorations ready, it is important to make sure that you have enough seating for your guests. Ask friends to bring over chairs or borrow some from a neighbor (after you invite them, of course!). Finally, if you’re 21 or over, you must have some drinks* at your party. The standard football beverage is beer (JAYE suggests Blue Moon with an orange slice garnish), but for those ladies who don’t enjoy beer, champagne is another fun choice.
