The town of P천lva is situated in the South-East of Estonia and is an administrative center of the P천lva County.

About the year 1240, a bishop of the Bernardine religious order founded St. Mary’s Church.

Põlva arose in the 15th century around the church which had been built at the crossroads of trade routes. In 1961, Põlva region was formed, and this remarkably promoted the development of Põlva, new enterprises and residential buildings were constructed and the number of citizens grew fast. In 1993, Põlva was granted the status of a town.

Handball, which can be practised in the local sports school, has been undoubtedly popular in Põlva. The professional players from the Serviti Handball Club have become the masters of Estonia four times and the club is also a serious competitor outside Estonia.

The varied landscape offers inexhaustible opportunities for those who like running, orienteering or cycling. This surely facilitates the success of the sportsmen of the Kobras Orienteering Club at competitions and urges them to organise sports events.

In addition to sports the inhabitants of Põlva are engaged in art and music. In the Põlva Art School one can learn painting, graphic arts and ceramics; the works of various artists are displayed in the Maarja Gallery. The Music School provides musical education and the E STuudio, an ensemble of young people, the brass band, the small symphony orchestra and a number of choirs also practise actively.

One of the favourite places of the inhabitants of Pþlva is surely J. Hurt’s Park; sitting on the bench near the monument and watching the bright play of colours of the fountain one can fall in deep contemplation together with the outstanding folklorist Jakob Hurt.

The beach of Lake PĂľlva is the best place for enjoying the pleasures of summer: swimming and sunbathing, playgrounds and walking trails, boattrips and fishing. And naturally, there is enough sunshine, water and warm air for everyone The artificial lake, which draws its water from the OrajĂľgi River, flowing through the lake, has become a popular holiday spot after having been dredged and renovated. The peat island in the centre of the lake has unique installation of lights to admire at dark time.

The small city lying between hills has lots of greenery, quiet and beauty, which just allure to spend your free time here. Intsikurmu forest park, which offers scenic beauty, singing birds and also winding tracks through the forest, is a pleasant place for people who want to take a walk or pursue sports. An open-air stage for choir singing, where the first Estonian song festivals were held in the years 1855 and 1857, has made Intsikurmu famous throughout Estonia. The open-air stage can hold about 3,500 singers but all who are eager can dance on the grass in front of it. Entertaining open-air parties and concerts attract you to have a good time!
