Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough, Where a horse’s hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride, The man that holds his own is good enough. amazing.” - David Koch Some areas around Mt Kosciuszko have been national parks since 1898, so in the summer the bushland is pristine and beautiful. The relatively mild climate of the Australian snowfields means that there’s an glorious palette of flora to see. While Tumut, in the foothills of the NSW Snowy Mountains, is the same whichever way it’s spelled, its seasons are vastly different. Summer brings cool, clean and fast-moving waters perfect for trout fishing. Green Kosciuszko National Park melts into the autumn colours Tumut is famous for. Winter brings skiing enthusiasts as the Snowys are covered in a blanket of snow and wildflowers jump into life on the edges of the Tumut River as spring emerges. This is one of Australia’s really beautiful towns. Tumut is encircled by popular walking tracks and abounds in brown and rainbow trout. Batlow, the apple capital of Australia is close by. During the 1850s

rush, Tumut’s population boomed with prospectors staying or passing through to mine for gold in the neighbouring towns. Tumut is the perfect base for exploring the Yarrangobilly thermal pools and limestone caves. The township of Jindabyne, nestled around the shores of magnificent Lake Jindabyne comes into its own in summer, when people are drawn to its diverse attractions. Its lake and mountain location makes it perfect for extreme sports or wildflower walks. Take advantage of the plenitude of mountain bike, 4WD, horse riding and hiking trails in the area. Lake Jindabyne is popular for waterskiing, snorkelling, sailing and canoeing. “Climb” Mount Kosciuszko – it’s more of a nice hike, really. In January, check out the Jindabyne Rodeo.
