Can’t Possibly Be True

Pro-nationalism English Defence League activists seemed to be itching for a street brawl to break up a scheduled anti-nationalist demonstration in downtown Birmingham, England, on July 18, causing the city to mobilize more than 1,000 police -- when officials arrived at a solution. Police shepherded “hundreds” of rowdy EDL operatives into the popular Bar Risa pub at 11 a.m., confining them for three hours, until the anti-EDL rally had dissipated. (Given British habits, many EDLers decided to enjoy their confinement with a brew.) As a result, police reported only sporadic street scuffling. (Bar Risa, perturbed by police pressure to host alleged “fascists,” donated its profits to the Midlands Air Ambulance service.) Inexplicable

The anti-poverty organization Transparency International reported in July that one hospital in Harare had recently been imposing a $5 charge on mothers each time they screamed during childbirth (in addition to the $50 delivery fee). Furthermore, it has long been rumored that hospitals in Zimbabwe (and other countries) may detain mothers and their children at the hospital if they cannot pay the fees. (Trans-

parency International reported several days later, after finally obtaining a meeting with a government official, that the perscream charge will be lifted.).

Mention cancer and it is enough to send chills down your spine. It is a dreaded disease where the cures are there but terribly overpriced. For some people, they simply do not have any choice but to die from it. But before they do, they have to endure the wasting and the pain that comes with this horrible disease. For years, scientists and Big Pharma have been racing to come up with a cure for cancer. And it is just sad that the miracle cure has been there all along. It is sad because nobody would have to die from cancer without trying to fight it first, and nobody would have gone bankrupt trying to defeat their diseases. Many can attest that marijuana is effective against cancer. In fact, over the years, several prestigious and credible organizations have found that marijuana can cure certain forms of cancer.

Marijuana has also been proven effective against these other types of cancer: • Lung Cancer, according to studies conducted at the Institute of Toxicology and Pharmacology at University of Rostock in Germany, and the Division of Experimental Medicine of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School. •Testicular, Pancreatic and Uterine Cancer •Prostate Cancer, according to research done at 1Institut de Chimie Pharmaceutique Albert Lespagnol in France, and the Universidad de Carabobo’s School of Health Sciences in Venezuela and the Department of Urology at Columbia University’s Mt. today. Pete Guither, the editor of DrugWarRant.com and a drug policy reform advocate and expert, tells the full story over at his site at http://www. drugwarrant.com/articles/whyis-marijuana-illegal/. What gives?

•Liver Cancer, according to researchers from the Alcala University in Spain •Biliary Tract Cancer, according to researchers at Rangsit University in Thailand. History backs marijuana. It is interesting to note that marijuana has been used throughout history as a cure for a lot of diseases. It could be very effective against nausea, insomnia and pain. It was legal medicine for more than 100 years before it was made illegal. But how marijuana became illegal is a sad mix of racism, fear, ignorance, bad journalism and greed. First, it was California’s resentment towards the marijuana-loving Mexicans that saw the first state prohibition laws in effect in the country. After California, a number of states also outlawed marijuana.

Wyoming, Texas, Iowa, Nevada, Oregon and Washington are just some states that enacted anti-marijuana laws to target the Mexican-American community. Much worse were the racism and fear that led to discrimination against marijuana users. During the 30s, marijuana was thought to embolden African Americans to rise up against the whites. Soon, marijuana was being linked to violent behavior. The fear and racism were strong enough to propel the careers of politicians who fed on the fear and made themselves popular. One of these self-serving politicians is Harry Anslinger, who worked to make marijuana illegal by federal laws. Do you detect a theme? None of these have proven that marijuana is indeed bad for your body or that it influences a user to become violent. Yet the ignorance continues until

Here’s the thing, with all the credible studies coming from prominent researchers from respected institutions all over the world, the government can no longer claim ignorance to the medical and health benefits of marijuana. In fact, the Food and Drugs Administration has approved Marinol, which has synthesized THC in it. And this is where the irony lie. There are millions of people who are currently in jail because of using marijuana and yet the government is saying that they can legally buy it in another form. One cannot help but wonder if there is truth to the speculations that the government is protecting the profits of corporations who are involved in making pharmaceuticals that marijuana can cure. And there are a lot. As we have said, cancer cures are big businesses, and marijuana cures not only cancer but a host of other diseases and conditions. Making marijuana legal, with its cheap price tag, would surely mean the end of big pharmaceutical companies. Whatever their reasons are, the government is letting a lot of people suffer and die by turning a blind eye to the fact that marijuana is safe and is a medically indicated cure for cancer and a lot of other diseases.

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA

Too High...? How to

Come Down By David Bailey We’ve done it! We finally legalized marijuana at a statewide level for any adult over the age of twenty-one to use as they please. For most, this is very old news, not any less exciting, but very old news. What we’re beginning to see as the excitement has worn off is all the officiating, taxing, regulating and of course the enforcement that our officials feel is necessary to both make the state money and satiate the Federals so we can keep the money we generate. While most of the laws have been centered around taxing, as always, we have had some recent laws concerning edible candies and their similarities, or copies, of popular children’s candies. This is surely causing many companies a lot of stress in changing and somehow staying afloat but bigger than this, what do we do if our child gets hold of an edible candy? Or even, what do we do if we get too high? Believe it or not, there’s actually several ways to calm down many of the undesirable side effects of a THC overdue for our children as well as ourselves. Before anything else, there have been NO reported cases of anyone ever dying from marijuana and the estimated amount required would be unfathomable to consume at one time. With the new legalization, emergency rooms statewide have seen a huge increase in patients, adults and children alike, who have eaten too much of an edible and don’t know what else to do but go to the hospital. Unfortunately, because they know it won’t kill you, many hospitals simply make you wait out the rest of the high and then

charge you astronomically for their wonderful services. Because the side effects of a THC overdose are almost entirely psychological, going to a white walled hospital full of judgmental and unfamiliar faces is often not an experience that makes anything any better. (This being said, if anyone feels they need to go to the hospital, I in no way discourage this.) So what does a THC overdose look like? It varies per person as well as their experience with the substance but generally one may hallucinate, feel extreme anxiety, increased heart rate and sometimes vomiting. The first step in making this person feel better is, just as I mentioned before, purely psychological. Helping them to understand what is happening, that it will end, and that they will be ok. If you’re anxious, feel like you’re having a heart attack and cannot perceive time, these little words can go a long way. The next step can come in many forms but luckily they’re all common household foods. Vitamin C, often found in high concentrations within citrus fruits, multivitamins, many red,

orange and yellow vegetables and cauliflower, slows the release of stress hormones within the body thus reducing the overstimulation of these hormones. Similarly, B vitamins, also found in foods, will have the same effect and can even be bought in stress reducing formulas in vitamin sections. Another option that is becoming increasingly available both within marijuana dispensaries and sport/vitamin stores is CBD. While this may immediately seem counterintuitive, CBD subdues THC from attaching to the CB1 receptors which is what causes much of the over stimulation. Secondly, CBD blocks hallucinations and is a natural anti-anxiety that has proven in some studies to be as effective as prescription drugs. While these options are very beneficial and will shorten the overall length of the experience, being there for the person, child or adult, in a calming supportive and loving environment will go further than anything you might give them. All in all, the best thing we can do is be preventative. While it is easy to say for parents, “Just be responsible and put it away.”

Anyone with kids knows, kids get into anything and everything especially if they are told not to. As a parent, knowing this is your best ammo. While it may seem extreme, keeping them locked up is the safest way to keep your children and you safe. Second most important is being educated. For adults that want to try edibles, don’t just grab a 100mg bar and eat the whole thing. For many first timers, 25mg can even be too much. Starting small and waiting can make sure you have a good time because you can always eat more but there’s no un-eating. If you had time to get high, you have time to wait for it to set in. For some, the effects can start as fast as 30 minutes, for others it can take as long as two hours. Wait it out, edibles gradually increase the high as your body digests it. Lastly, make sure you don’t have anywhere to go because edible highs can last as long as seven hours for beginners. With a little bit of knowledge and some careful keeping, we can keep our kids safe and our highs happy all in one. Happy munching everyone!

EDIBLE REVIEW

ThE Last Word By FuQua Johnson

Greetings to all and I hope everyone is doing well. It’s sad to say but this article will be my last one for the Gazette. I’ve had a wonderful time writing these and I really hope you enjoyed reading them. I never thought I would enjoy writing as much as I did, but I really had fun exploring the world of edibles. I would like to extend my gratitude to the entire staff and Nature’s Herb, and the Ganja Gazette. Thank you for the opportunity to write these reviews for the Gazette. So from the bottom of my heart, I THANK YOU!!! So, being the April issue, I decide to go out with a bang! Hope everyone is getting ready for 4/20! I hear Denver is celebrating it twice this year since 4/20 lands on Easter this year. So, Denver will be holding a rally on the 19th and the 20th. You got two chances to head south to the big rally in Denver. Also, I know John and the staff a Nature’s will hold a big 4/20 event. Live music, food, crafts and of course, hourly specials all day long. Stop by and say “high” to the staff, enjoy music and get great deals every hour. I had a great time last year and the food was good, along with the beer garden. Okay, I wanted this last article to kind of give you an overview of many of the edible I have tried and how I use them. There are way too many to list but I will go over some of my favorite ones. Also, I will go over some unique ways to enjoy them. I really like the “Incredilbes” company out of Denver. I had the chance to visit the kitchen, and I was like Charlie at the chocolate factory. The bars are great by themselves but I have found a way to enjoy them even more. Try making “Smores” using these bars. I really like the “Boul-

der, Monkey, or PB Buddha” to make smores. These will be the best smores you will ever have and the taste is amazing. My girl held a party for one of her friends and she decided to make cupcakes but add a piece of “Boulder Bar” on top of each one. I thought it was a clever idea on her part. I, also really like “the growing kitchen”, “Edipure”, and “sweet mary jane” companies as well. I love the “Day Tripper” edible from “sweet mary jane” because it’s a strain specific “sativa” edible for daytime. This product comes with two bars and I like to enjoy a day on the slope with these edibles. I like to eat one of the two on the first lift up, and enjoy the second one at lunch time. Also, a Rem-Pen or the O-Pen would be a good selection for the slopes. Many resorts are now trying to ban medicating on the resort because of families and out of town tourist. So, these pens might be a good alternative to take with you to the mountains. For the patients that are looking for pain relief especially at night, I recommend the CBD Chews from “Chebba Chews” or the “Chai High Tea”.

These are loaded with the CBD’s that really helps with pain. I like to eat a “Chebba Chew” when my back is acting up. It really helps me sleep with little pain and I can actually sleep throughout the night. Try mixing regular coffee with the “White Chocolate Chai Tea”, it acts like a creamer for the coffee and I can medicate slowly all morning long. Okay, the last thing I wanted to mention was something that I got to try recently and really enjoyed. I recommend doing this when you are not planning to drive anywhere. If you are having a party, this will be a great party favor. I was at party for a friend of mines birthday, and someone brought a “Wild Turkey” bottle, but something was wrong with it. It didn’t look like whiskey but rather a lime green color. He told me about two months ago, he bought this bottle of whiskey but instead of drinking it right away, he infused hash and kief into the bottle. He then let it sit for about two months letting the hash and kief mix with the whiskey. It does turn the whiskey green depending on how much

hash you put into it. He told me, he added about 7 grams of hash and a bunch of kief into the bottle. I had a shot or two of this hash infused whiskey and I was feeling the effect of both extremely quickly and it was awesome. This is the beauty of science at its best. Basically, the THC will bind or link up with alcohol making a complete bond, and the THC goes for a ride with the alcohol. Since alcohol gets absorbed through the system faster than THC, you will feel the buzz from the whiskey but then a slow feeling of “awesomeness” will come over you. You will feel the effect in less the 30 minutes and last a very long time. Everyone at the party had a shot or two or three and it was a blast. I have the pictures to prove it. I started a bottle for myself to use at 4/20. It is better to use a high alcohol content liquor anything over 80 proof, higher the alcohol content the better. Be patient and it will be worth it in the end, I promise.

IN THE KNOW

Marijuana and HIV/AIDS

We all know that marijuana helps in the treatment of cancer patients, along with managing pain and other conditions that you’re kosher and traditional medicine cabinet cannot handle. But it seems that we have one more disease to add to the evergrowing and already long list of diseases that respond positively to marijuana: HIV/AIDS. Canada has been at the forefront of research involving the use of medical marijuana to treat patients with HIV/AIDS. As early as 2006, the Canadian AIDS society and the Medical Marijuana Information Resource Centre has been very active in informing the public about the benefits of using marijuana among AIDS patients, even putting up an exhibit at the XVI International AIDS Conference that year. According to the Canadian AIDS Society, as many as 37% of HIV/AIDS patients use marijuana to help manage the symptoms of their disease, including nausea, vomiting, depression, appetite loss, pain and anxiety. Recent studies have also supported the claim. A study from researchers at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine shows that the active ingredients in marijuana can help slow down the progression of the disease even during the late stages of infection. Specifically, the tetrahydrocannabinol in marijuana and its interactions with your body’s cannabinoid receptor 1 and cannabinoid receptor 2 can prove to be beneficial. When THC interacts with CR1, you can get high because CR1 receptors are found mostly in the brain. But CR2 receptors, which is also

found in brain cells, are also present in cells of the gastrointestinal tract, the peripheral nervous system and the immune system. And this is what makes marijuana very helpful in treating or managing the symptoms of HIV/AIDS. And then here’s a bonus: CD4. It has been found that marijuana increases the number of CD4 cells, which lowers the viral load. And while it is still not clear how this happens, but it would seem that it is very beneficial in stemming the spread of the virus through the body. As such, the researchers, led by Dr. Cristina Maria Constantino, are postulating that marijuana helps stop a certain kind of HIV infection they call CXCR4-tropic virus. The CSCR4tropic virus is where late-stage HIV infection happens and it is responsible for the rapid progression of the disease. In short, marijuana can slow down the progression of HIV during the late stages. Another study conducted by Dr. Servio Ramirez shows that marijuana helps keep the HIV virus out of the patient’s brain. Dr. Ramirez says that the THC in cannabis can help block HIVinfected cells from getting into the brain, while also keeping infections down. Ramirez and his fellow researchers say that not only can THC block infections, but it can also slow down the virus’ ability to reproduce. HIV can seriously impact memory and brain functions, which can lead to memory loss, problems with verbal fluency and attention deficiency. The problem is that most of the current medications for HIV do not enter the brain, while the few

that can enter the brain are rendered useless. So once the infection gets to the brain, there is nothing much that pharmacology can do about it. No human testing These are just some of the myriads of studies that prove once again that marijuana might be a viable treatment for HIV/ AIDS. Couple that with the potential medical uses of marijuana for a variety of other diseases and you have a potential wonder drug that could help stem the progression or even treat today’s most dreaded diseases. At the very least, marijuana has the power to help patients live more normal lives. Right now, there is no way to see if the results, which were obtained using monkeys and other laboratory animals, could be replicated in humans. That is because human subjects are a big no-no in marijuana research, owing to the fact that the

federal government still thinks that marijuana is a Schedule I substance. As such, all of these medical benefits stay in the realm of “could bes.” It could help cure cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, but there is no way to tell for sure because researchers are not allowed to test it on humans. However, researchers could, in theory, carry out these trials in Colorado or Washington. But even if it were allowed, the government would not fund it. The National Institute on Drug Abuse is the agency tasked to disburse research funding for cannabis-related research, and they do not particularly like any research that aims to show that illicit substances may have benefits. And you probably would not find support in big pharmaceutical companies. This leads a lot of researchers to just give up and abandon their studies.

How to have more fun

Four twenty

Have you ever wondered how April 20 became Weed Day? Here’s a fun fact: 420 is the police code for marijuana smoking. A couple of potheads heard it and began using the code to refer to weed. Since then, 420 has become synonymous to marijuana and, luckily, the number coincides with April 20, which is often shortened as 4/20. Of course, this story might not be true. As long as there is a Weed Day, no matter when it falls, we are happy. April 20 is marked by events and celebrations that mainly serve as an excuse to get high. There are several iconic places that have hosted these events, such as Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the University of Colorado at Boulder campus, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and the Mount Royal monument in Quebec. This year, 420 falls on a Sunday, so you have the whole weekend to celebrate. Why not start early with Phochella at the Sail Inn in Tempe, Arizona on April 19? The music festival starts at noon and continues on till the wee hours of the next day. It can rival Coachella, the premier music festival in California, only that tickets here are much more budget friendly. It is also one of the few events where you can truly enjoy 420 for everything that it has to offer, if you get our drift. At the Denver Cannabis Cup, which happens on April 19 to 20, 2014, you can get to know the various products, paraphernalia, and everything about marijuana. It is a twoday event that serves as a trade show for cannabis. You can also get cool cannabis shirts

here, and there are cooking lessons that would teach you how to cook with marijuana. If you are a little antsy about going out to celebrate on 420, then why not stay in, gather your friends and watch stoner movies at home. There are a lot of movies to choose from, including 2013’s This Is the End, Crystal Fairy and the Magic Cactus, Spring Breakers, Newlyweeds, We’re the Millers, 21 and Over, and How to Make Money Selling Drugs. Renting all of these movies could last you the entire weekend doing nothing but enjoy the movies and the toking. If you would rather go out, then check out Kid Cannabis, which will start showing on April 18. You could also join college students on campus as they hold their own 420 celebrations. There are also different 420 parties going down on the day itself or the Saturday before. For instance, join New Yorkers as they celebrate at Washington Square Park, or students at the Arizona State University as they celebrate what they call “Earth Day” (but we all know what they will be doing). You should also check out the Deep Green Festival and

Conference, which will happen in Richmond, where cannabis is celebrated with live music, vendor exhibits and an ecological fashion show. In Boston, marijuana fans will gather at Boston Common and take a trip down Bean Town by joining the Cannabis Gathering there. You can also join the Cannabis Appreciate Day 420 Party, where you can mix live music with getting high. There is also the Annual 420 Rally happening at the Civic Center Park in Colorado. The rally will be held over two days and is approved by the mayor, so go ahead and voice your support for marijuana legalization. You will also be protesting the

continued imprisonment of those who were only consuming legal marijuana. Listen to speakers as they talk about the injustice of continued marijuana prohibition, and about how marijuana changed their lives. Join others as they celebrate marijuana and 420 culture. Or just enjoy the live music. And did we mention that 420 this year falls on Easter Sunday? So why not celebrate marijuana with the Easter Bunny? Plus, if you really want to make a difference, check out your local NORML chapter. You can attend a chapter meeting to get to know all the latest issues involving marijuana legalization. Or you can donate to their efforts. If there are no chapters in your area, you can even start one. This will go a long way in making sure that each state has its own local citizens who are supporting NORML’s efforts. You can download the application form here: http://norml. org/about/item/chapter-startup?category_id=1002. You can also read the guidelines here: http://norml.org/ pdf_files/guidelines.pdf.

Stick close to friends and family. Venturing off on your own or being flirtatious with someone new will be misconstrued, leaving you in an awkward position and possibly affecting your reputation. An honest explanation will help you avoid a personal problem.

CANCER

(June 21 -July 22)

A short trip to visit a friend or a destination that inspires you will start the year off right. Make a to-do list for the upcoming year based on your needs, desires and feasible goals. Experiencing a different lifestyle will broaden your awareness.

LEO

(July 23 -August 22)

You are long overdue for a personal or professional change. Pursuing something altogether different will energize and inspire you to strive for bigger and better pursuits. Love and romance are highlighted, so share your future goals with someone special.

VIRGO

ASTRO ADVICE MONTHLY

aries By Eugenia Last

Happy Birthday: Refrain from letting your emotions lead you into making poor financial or medical choices. Do your best to make self-improvements that will encourage others to engage in endeavors with you. Focus on resurrecting an old idea that has greater potential to excel in the current economic climate. Avoid impulsive moves or statements. Caution and honesty are your best bets. Your numbers are 9, 11, 16, 24, 27, 35, 43.

(August 23 - September 22)

Discuss your plans and find a sensible approach to take you to your destination. Having a set plan or organizing your time wisely will ensure that you reach the level of success you are searching for. Don’t let impulsiveness be your downfall.

LIBRA

(September 23 - October 22)

A low profile and a plan to accomplish any unfinished chores before you begin your journey forward into the New Year will be your best bet. Put more time and effort into self-improvement and deciding what you can discard and what you must keep.

SCORPIO

(October 23 - November 21)

Practicality coupled with a passion to pursue your dreams will help you set a workable game plan. Heading into the upcoming year with set goals and a serious mindset will encourage you to show greater discipline and courage as you proceed.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21)

You’ll be in love with life and will embrace challenges and change wholeheartedly. The more exciting the offer, the more enthusiastic you will become. Setting your course and pursuing a longtime dream will bring you satisfaction. Love is in the stars
