National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant) The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant) is the second of two federally funded grant programs initially created in 20062007 to encourage well-prepared students to finish their degrees on time and in areas that contribute to American competitiveness in a global economy. The SMART Grant is available to full-time Pell Grant eligible students during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study who are majoring in certain physical, life or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering, or foreign languages as determined annually by the federal government. The student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 monitored each semester. Pell Grant The Pell Grant is designed to provide financial assistance to meet educational costs on the basis of need as determined by the FAFSA. For the 2008-2009 academic year, grants range from $523 to $4731 per year. The Department of Education updates the Pell Grant chart on an annual basis. Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is awarded to students with exceptional need as determined by the FAFSA. Grants vary in amount. Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant) The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant 18

is effective beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year. The Teach Grant provides $4000 per year in grant assistance to students who meet certain requirements. If a student who receives a TEACH Grant does not complete the required four years of teaching in a high need field serving low income students within the allotted eight years, the grant must be repaid as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan with accrued interest calculated from initial disbursement of the first TEACH Grant.

North Dakota State Scholarships and Grants

North Dakota Scholars The North Dakota Scholars program, a merit-based scholarship, provides scholarships to new freshmen and encourages them to remain in North Dakota to obtain their post-secondary education. The scholarship at private institutions is equal to a full tuition scholarship at the University of North Dakota. The North Dakota Scholars Scholarship is renewable for up to three years provided the recipient maintains a cumulative 3.50 grade point average. The scholarship program is administered by the North Dakota University System. North Dakota State Grant The North Dakota State Student Incentive Grant Program provides grants to North Dakota residents pursuing their undergraduate degree and who are attending a postsecondary institution in North Dakota on a full-time basis.
