Dear Friends, As we reflect on the past year, very few organizations make it 100 years, even fewer continue to grow and thrive as Junior Achievement has. We’re energized by what we’ve accomplished thanks to your investment. Junior Achievement has experienced incredible innovation and success. We’ve impacted 12,192 students, joined with new educators and schools, and partnered with more volunteers. We’ve piloted two programs-JA Inspire and JA Innovation Challenge-to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in the workforce and start a business. We are always looking for new ways to motivate young people to envision a successful future and to gain the skills needed to be contributing members of our community. Our partners are instrumental in keep us relevant, innovative, and engaging! Today’s youth are our future; their success is our success. As we look forward, we’re excited by what’s ahead. In 2019, we have established the inaugural JA College, Career and Trades Conference. A timesaving opportunity for 3,500 middle and high school students to conveniently gather information in one day. Over 250 representatives from local businesses, colleges and trades will be on hand to answer key questions ranging from college acceptance policies, job shadowing, internships, and employment. Together, we are building a generation of fiscally responsible, innovative, and workforce-ready young adults who are prepared to enter the real world with the skills and confidence needed to succeed. Let’s build! Sincerely,

Michele L. Merkel President

Job Shadow AT&T JOB SHADOW PROGRAM 

AT&T VOLUNTEERS th

AT&T Aspire, a $100 million initiative to promote high school success and workforce readiness, includes the AT&T/JA Worldwide Job Shadow Initiative — a landmark commitment to inspire students to succeed in school, leading to success in careers and in life. An alarming number of students with passing grades are dropping out of high school. They simply don’t see the relevance of their school work today to their future life success. AT&T is working with Junior Achievement to execute a five-year national job shadow initiative, giving 100,000 students a chance to see firsthand the types of careers are within their reach and job skills they will need to succeed. The AT&T effort is the largest corporate job shadowing partnership that Junior Achievement has launched.

On March 27 2019, 88 high school students participated in an AT&T Job Shadow workshop at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center. The day-long program began with a breakfast and welcoming ceremony, after which the groups had four different breakout sessions, learning about how to write resumes, going on job interviews, a safety lesson about cell phone usage, and then a visit to learn about the cell tower engineering. The day wrapped up with lunch followed by a Family Feud-style review of the sessions.

JA Economics Blended Learning Pilot Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley was the first of five areas in the nation to pilot the national JA Economics curriculum at Austintown Fitch High School with teacher Jill Martin. 236 students in 10 classes were able to offer their insight throughout the pilot phase. Since Fitch was the only school in the United States participating in the fall semester pilot, JA executives from Colorado and Florida visited the building in January and April to discuss the curriculum with the students. Our local success and input resulted in national recognition and credit as a contributor to the national curriculum. The JA Economics curriculum that was piloted at Austintown Fitch High School garnered the attention of the local media and was used in the training videos for the other 105 Junior Achievement areas across the United States. JAMV Program Manager, Nicole Fond, presented on the success of the program at the JA National Leadership Conference.

JA Economics reinforces concepts of micro- and macro-economics by having students explore the basic characteristics of the U.S. economic system and how economic principles influence business decisions. The program also introduces students to career opportunities and consumer issues, and it helps reinforce important academic and leadership skills, including research and data analysis, problem solving and critical thinking. JA Economics is a one-semester course that connects high school students to the economic principles that influence their daily lives as well as their futures. It addresses each of the economics standards identified by the Council for Economic Education as being essential to complete a high school economics course. Through a variety of experiential activities presented by the teacher and a volunteer, students better understand the relationships between what they learn in school and their successful participation in today’s global economy.

“JA Economics has the technology built into it, which is necessary in today’s society to keep the student’s attention and it’s a good look at our economics system today.”

Implementation of this program was made possible in part by the financial support of The Thomases Family Endowment of The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.

JA Ethics Day On November 29th, 2018, 310 high school students at Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Champion and Liberty High Schools participated in JA Ethics Day. Nine volunteer mentors from the community shared the “Ethics Under Pressure lesson from the JA Excellence through Ethics program. Students answered ethics questions and compared their responses to a national poll, sponsored by Junior Achievement and Deloitte. Then students engaged in role-playing scenarios to practice ethical decisionmaking in situations where there is pressure to act unethically. This program grows the critical soft skills employers seek by focusing specifically on decision-making, business ethics vs. personal ethics, and facing difficult decisions with honor, among others.

JA Excellence through Ethics Pilot During the month of April 2019, Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley was able to participate in the national pilot of a new JA Excellence through Ethics program. JA Excellence through Ethics is part of the JA Work and Career Readiness Pathway. 101 students in grades 8-12 at Champion High School, Liberty High School, and Lowellville Jr./Sr. High School participated in the 60- to 90- minute learning experience. They met with local business mentors who taught them about the importance of ethics in the workplace and in everyday life. Through interactive exercises, students were able to define ethics, evaluate personal values in ethical dilemmas, articulate and identify the steps necessary to make ethical decisions, and recognize the importance of identifying and understanding personal values as a means of avoiding unethical choices. The program was implemented at both the middle and high school levels, with activities varying based on grade level.

“It was a fantastic experience teaching the JA Excellence through Ethics program at Lowellville Jr./Sr. High School. Watching the students think through their options, respectfully debate their points of view within the class and evaluate the repercussions of their actions demonstrated the impact of teaching this program and the development of their critical thinking skills. I am looking forward to teaching the program again. - Ryan Pastore, JAMV Board Chair and PNC Bank

JA Be Entrepreneurial During the 2018-2019 school year, 43 students at Chalker and Champion high schools participated in the JA Be Entrepreneurial program. JA Be Entrepreneurial challenges students, through interactive classroom activities, to start their own entrepreneurial venture while still in high school. The program provides useful, practical content to assist teens in the transition from being students to productive, contributing members of society. Champion High School students and staff sampled four different flavored “coolattas” at lunch on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2019, as part of an entrepreneurship marketing activity by students in the JA Be Entrepreneurial program. The students worked with Junior Achievement to develop a business plan and strategies to see if the idea was worth pursuing. Before buying the equipment, they wanted to find out what students like. The winning flavor of the day was “S’Mores”!

After completing the JA Be Entrepreneurial program, Chalker High School seniors in the Personal Finance class hosted an Entrepreneur Fair on May 16, 2019.

“Being in Junior Achievement, we wanted to come up with something to make the school better. We thought this would be a fun opportunity.”

The Junior Achievement curriculum gave me the confidence to teach my students about Entrepreneurship. My students learned how to put together a business plan, budgets, make pitches, create advertisements, host an event, and calculate profits.

-Champion sophomore Adam F. Special thanks to: Heidi Harper, Champion Local School District and Rebecca Baxter, Physical Science/STEM teacher

The Entrepreneur Fair event taught the students what it takes to run a small business. A variety of products were sold to the district students and staff. Some of the businesses they started included Jiggy Jello, Poppin’ Toppin’ Popcorn, Rainbow Bakery, and Cold Brew Boys.

- Chalker Business Teacher, Renee Karr

Young Women’s Mentorship Program The Young Women's Mentorship Program through United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley paired 21 sixth grade students up with professional female mentors. As part of the year long program, the students from Boardman Center Intermediate School received JA Economics for Success from JAMV Program Manager and Young Women’s Mentor, Nicole Fond. The most important part of this program is that the students go through these sessions with their mentors who attend the weekly sessions. This allows the two to form a positive relationship that often extends beyond the program. JA Economics for Success lays bare for students the heart of a successful economic life: choosing the right career and managing money properly. The program also expands their knowledge of personal finance including smart budgeting, wise credit use, and minimizing financial risk so they can apply strong financial management skills regardless of their income. Pre- and post- test numbers indicate that overall, the program had a strong educational impact on the students who participated. Students increased their scores from pre- to post- test by an average of 10%.

“I learned that you should budget your money wisely and appropriately and about the importance of education.” - BCIS Student

Bowl-A-Thon 2019 We had two Bowl-a-Thons this year with 226 bowlers participating at the events in February and May - all to raise money for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley’s mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. In addition to being a fun-filled event for co-workers, friends and family, the event was a successful fundraiser for our organization. We are proud to announce that the 2019 All that Jazz Bowl-A-Thon raised over $23,000 for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley. We would like to thank all of our t-shirt sponsors and prize donors for helping to make our event a success. We are grateful for our Bowl-AThon coordinators who devoted time and resources out of their busy work schedules to organize bowling teams and lead fundraising efforts. A very special thanks to all of our bowlers who raised money and bowled.
