Local Food Guide

From the Editor One of our favorite topics at HappyValley.com is indigenous restaurants. We have long loved promoting the abundance of unique local places we are fortunate to have in Happy Valley, and other nearby areas. But covering only restaurants and dining simply doesn’t do justice to the many opportunities available to enjoy fresh, delicious and creative foods and beverages that are grown, made, baked, brewed, and crafted locally. We hope you enjoy the inaugural issue of HappyValley.com’s Food Guide as much as we’ve enjoyed compiling it. Learn more about Community Supported Agriculture; find delicious specialty items, save the date for your favorite Farmers Markets; compare caterers or order unique cookies or cakes for your next event; find a new café or specialty market; or a delight in the wide variety of restaurants that are using locally sourced ingredients. Wherever the Food Guide takes you, it’ll be delicious. Sincerely, Jodie Dello Stritto

The Gamble Mill Restaurant & Microbrewery is Perfect for Date Night or Any Night Out in Happy Valley By Anne Yorks When we started dating, my now-husband and I loved happy hour deals anywhere we could find them. After six years of marriage and two kids, and with his job and my home-based cookie business, we have a lot less time for dates. So we’ve stopped messing around with chain restaurants in favor of the unique local flavors that Happy Valley restaurants have to offer. The Gamble Mill Restaurant and Tavern, located in the heart of downtown Victorian Bellefonte, is one of our favorites and has become a go-to place, not just for special occasions, but for anytime we want to enjoy dinner out. We especially love it when we have a babysitter at home with the kids and can savor our meals and linger over one of the house-brewed craft beers from the Gamble Mill’s microbrewery. But the Mill is family-friendly, too, and even offers a men for kids with favorites like hot dogs and grilled cheese. Friends of ours who also frequent the Gamble Mill share their adult meals with their kids to introduce them to new flavors and instill an appreciation for fresh, delicious food. The Gamble Mill originally operated as flour mill under several owners dating back to the late 1700s, but has been in operation as a restaurant since the mid80s. There’s a fine-dining menu featuring American flavors and classic dishes, and a casual Tavern menu, offering higher-end pub-style food. Significant portions of each menu come from local farms and suppliers. Even better, the Gamble Mill offers house-produced craft beers with a rotating menu of flavors (there’s also an extensive, award-winning wine list, and a full-service bar, if beer isn’t your thing). My husband, not a beer connoisseur but definitely an enthusiast, will tell anyone who’ll listen that Gamble Mill’s is some good beer. (Don’t tell him, but I’m considering gifting him with a membership to the Gamble Mill Brewery Club. The benefits include food discounts, invitations to exclusive brewery events, and 16

Local Food Guide

other specials for an annual membership fee of just $35 (this is a fantastic deal as brewery clubs go, and I suspect a well-kept secret that he’d be getting in on early). On our most recent visit, we settled into a cozy, candle-lit table for two on the Tavern side and solicited the help of our server on selecting an appetizer. We’d enjoyed the Brewhouse platter, Hungarian mushroom soup (thick, creamy and amazing!), and the butternut squash ravioli (also thick, creamy and even more amazing!) on previous visits. The Andouille Sausage Beer and Cheese Dip served with a golden browned soft pretzel braid caught our eye and our server described it as “one of a kind.” Sold. It was creamy and rich and so delicious, I double-dipped my pretzel so we wouldn’t waste any (double-dipping, just one of the many benefits of marriage). For my main course, I opted for a perfectly melted French Brie Grilled Cheese sandwich served with brandied applesauce. My husband, out to indulge, selected the dinner special, a mixed grill with petit lamb chops, a petit filet mignon, shiitake mushroom risotto, and an arugula salad with grilled cherry tomatoes. As usual, our visit to the Gamble Mill was exactly what we needed to shake off the dust of the week. I really can’t overstate the atmosphere. The upstairs dining area is spacious, yet still cozy and comfortable. Downstairs in the Tavern, there’s a more intimate feel, enhanced by the stone walls and timber beams. We haven’t found anything like it anywhere. Neither my husband nor I are Bellefonte natives, so we enjoy soaking up the interesting history of the Gamble Mill location and our small town. Throughout the restaurant, there are framed glimpses into the storied past of Bellefonte. Old town photos, mill machinery, and a framed flour bag from the mill are just a few things that caught my eye. The Gamble Mill reigns as our favorite. In the heart of downtown Bellefonte, it’s just 5-10 minutes from the outskirts of town where we live, and only about 15-minutes from State College. The Mill accepts

reservations, which I highly recommend ThursdaysSaturdays especially, and on big weekends in Happy Valley. Here are a few other places we like: Café on the Park, High St., Bellefonte - Not all dates needs to be at night (if you’re married, you know you take a date whatever time you can get it). Reconnect over coffee and a country-style breakfast to kick off the weekend. We love the café year-round, but find it especially shines during the summer when breakfast can be enjoyed outside on the patio, which features a great view of Talleyrand Park and the sounds of Spring Creek running under the deck boards. Note that the café now offers a different themeddinner on each weekend (reservations recommended). Cozy Thai, Allen Street, State College – Truth is we’ve only been here once, on a double date, but, we loved it! Cozy Thai is on our short list of upcoming date nights. The food is indescribably good, and there’s always a bustling crowd to prove it. Friends recommend the Pad Thai with chicken, the Red Curry dish and the Thai iced tea.

Elk Creek Café and Aleworks, West Main St, Millheim – It is well worth the scenic drive to Millheim for this excellent ‘Nouveau Dutchie Cuisine’ using nearly all local ingredients. The house-brewed beer is a bonus (try the Brookie Brown Ale). Double bonus is awesome local musicians for entertainment. Elk Creek is a win-win-win.

CSAs Offer the Best Local Flavor of the Season By Jonathan McVerry There’s nothing quite like the taste of a fresh-picked tomato on a summer day. What’s even better is knowing that your tomato was grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Happy Valley is nestled among miles of farmland, offering a diverse selection of fresh, organic produce and other foods during the growing season and throughout the year. And, thanks to the growing interest in Community Shared Agriculture (CSAs), farmers are joining together to bring the freshest local, sustainable food the area has to offer. Why join a CSA? A CSA is like a subscription for local food. Members pay at the beginning of the season, then enjoy their share of the harvest through the following months. The variety in the boxes is as vast as it is unpredictable. Rhubarb, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, carrots, corn, watermelon, blackberries, strawberries and squash are just a few of the many foods that may appear throughout the season – always at their freshest. “Everyone is trying to eat healthier these days,” said Nell Hanssen, coordinator at GroundWork Farms CSA and Buying Club. “Local food is healthier, not processed like you’ll find at the grocery store.” She said it also allows consumers to broaden their horizons by trying new foods they may have never tasted, or experimenting with recipes to feature their produce. “(Local farming) is excellent,” Addison Hoffman of Howard’s End Farm said. “It’s picked the day before. Always very fresh.” “The supermarket is very good at telling you how fresh everything is,” he added. “Unfortunately it’s not true. The average trucking distance (for a supermarket) is 1,600 miles. My members are educated. They understand the importance of better value and nutrition.” CSA programs benefit more than just consumers. The farmers also benefit by having a stream of customers lined up during the off-season, and up-front payment comes at a time when supplies like seeds and fertilizer need to be paid for. “I’ve found that people feel strongly about supporting their local farmers,” said Hanssen. “CSAs keep money circulating within the local economy.” A growing demand Standing at a distribution area on a sunny but chilly February evening, Deb Brubaker of Village Acres Farm talked about the growing demand for CSAs, and how the movement toward fresher, more locally-grown foods is exciting for all involved. “Growing up on a farm, (people would say) ‘I am sorry you have to work so hard,” she said with a laugh. “Now I feel more like a celebrity. It’s very encouraging.” 20

Local Food Guide

Brubaker’s father Roy, who she recently became business partners with, has been farming at Village Acres in Mifflintown for almost 30 years. They’ve been running their CSA for 15. “People are really acknowledging the role of agriculture in this area,” Deb Brubaker said. “People are seeing this as an occupation that’s worth choosing…and there’s a greater understanding of what it takes to be a farmer.” More than just fruits and veggies Those who sign up for a farm share enjoy a wealth of benefits that stretches beyond fresh food. CSA members often develop a relationship with their farmers. “You get to participate in how your food is produced,” said Hanssen. “Farmers are there as resources to make sure you’re eating what you want to eat.” Members also get a lot more than just fruits and veggies. Several CSAs also offer organic meats, cheeses, breads and eggs. “[The Howard’s End Farm] CSA is highly diversified,” Hoffman said. “Not only do we offer what we grow here, but we have local farmers that produce other things which we offer to our members as well.” (These include organic turkey, Milheim trout and grass-fed beef, just to name a few). Hanssen said that GroundWork Farms partners with other local vendors to offer shares of raw dairy products, free-range eggs and breads baked with ingredients including organic flour, locally produced honey, and organic dried fruits, nuts and herbs. Others, like Village Acres, teach consumers how to make the most of their produce. “We’ve made workshops on cooking and canning,” Brubaker said. “Things our culture has lost over the years.” One farm, in addition to its CSA program, educates consumers on how to plant their own delicious edible gardens. Tait Farm, located in Centre Hall, offers a selection of seeds, herbs, vegetable seedlings and other backyard edibles. Tait Farm also provides an opportunity for its consumers to really be a part of the growing process through its workshare program. The program, which is a trade of labor for produce, allows consumers to help on the farm to plant, weed or harvest in exchange for their week’s bounty. How it works There are about 10 CSA farms in the region, each with a different style, specialty and programs for any level of locavore. Most CSA members pick up their weekly share of seasonal produce from the farm itself or at a designated dropoff point. Ground Work Farms is unique in that it delivers shares directly to its members, and Howard’s End Farm works its shares differently, allowing members to choose what items they want a la carte style via email. You can find more information on each local farm’s CSA on their web sites or by calling them directly. Get the freshness without the subscription If you’re not quite ready to sign up for a CSA, you can still benefit from the area’s organic farm-fresh food through the numerous farmers markets held area during the spring and summer. These events are a good opportunity to browse the offerings of local farms and to chat with several farmers at once about a variety of topics. Stay tuned to www.happyvalley.com for schedules of upcoming farmers markets.

An Unparalleled Experience at Zola Offering a taste of big-city dining in downtown State College, Zola New World Bistro features an atmosphere unlike that of any other dining establishment in Happy Valley. From its seasonal menus of the best local, regional and organic food to its unparalleled, award-winning wine list and exceptional service, Zola creates a relaxing, chic environment ideal for enjoying some of the area’s best food and drinks. Owners Dave Fonash and Paul Kendeffy opened Zola to realize their shared dream of opening a unique restaurant in State College. Fonash, a State College native and Penn State alum, earned his Sommelier certification in 2003 from the Sommelier Society of America in New York. His extensive knowledge of wines and spirits has led to Zola receiving numerous “Best Martini” and “Best Wine List” nods from the readers of State College Magazine, as well as several Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence. Kendeffy, a graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, serves as executive chef and blends his solid background in French cuisine with international influences and techniques to create delicious, unique menus for both lunch and dinner, including vegetarian and vegan options.

Zola has received awards for its exemplary wine list since 2003, and the restaurant always has a certified Sommelier on the floor to help customers explore the wine list and answer any questions. By the glass and by the bottle offerings rotate and change weekly. Fonash works primarily with the state’s smallest and most unique distributor’s in order to provide guests with true gems that are not found anywhere else in the area. The menus at Zola change monthly, ensuring that diners are receiving the freshest offerings available. Recent appetizer and dinner features include Gamble Mill beer-battered blackened cod with a potato nest and truffle mayonnaise, ginger battered shrimp with orange-dill cous cous and a venison duo that included Greek venison stew and a venison gyro with cucumber sour cream and pita. Perennial menu favorites include the macaroni and cheese with black truffles and gruyere cheese and the cheese fondue for two, which offers several flavor options, including champagne and kirsch, mushroom and truffle essence and roasted garlic and rosemary. For those with a sweet tooth, the stuffed croissant French toast with Nutella, vanilla-cinnamon butter and maple syrup can’t be beat. Although definitely a highlight, Zola’s menu is not the only reason to visit. The restaurant features weekly Jazz nights every Friday from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Patrons can relax on leather couches and choose from over 30 distinctive cocktails, over 50 beers or nearly 200 different wines. Located on College Avenue in downtown State College, Zola offers parking directly behind the building or in the W. College Realty parking lot after 5:30 p.m. Reservations are accepted. Menus and more are online www.zolabistro.com.

Q&A with Executive Chef Paul Kendeffy: Q: Can you describe how the accessibility of local food in Happy Valley impacts the menu at Zola? A: The accessibility has greatly changed over the past few years. the biggest challenge in the past was the quantity of the product that was consistently available. The farmers have increased their production which now makes it much easier to offer their products on the menu. Q: How does the menu change with the seasons? What highlights should customers expect on the menu each season? A: The menu is very weather driven. The colder it gets the hardier the food is. People will see as many seasonal vegetables and fruits on the menu as possible. With the emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients in our dishes, people will get a taste of the best of our area.

24

Local Food Guide

Q: What are some of the dishes you’ve created using locally grown, raised or produced foods? A: Virtually all of dishes contain local and seasonal items. In the spring, we focus heavily on vegetables and use much lighter sauces. Local meats, cheeses, and vegetables are a staple in our kitchens Q: Are their specific dishes that are your personal favorites? What about customer favorites? A: Customers love some of the dishes that have been with us for a while, like the red snapper and the crab cake. It’s really tough for me to name a specific favorite since my taste in food changes so often.

With the addition of the Microbrewery and the direction of owners Dave Fonash and Paul Kendeffy, who purchased the Gamble Mill in 2008, the Mill has made a subtle yet important transformation from a ‘special occasion’ restaurant to a place customers frequent once a week (or more!) to enjoy great food and beer. The combination of sophistication and historic charm is warm and accessible, as evidenced by the range of customers. It’s not unusual to see families and couples alike enjoying a weekend or weeknight dinner, while friends enjoy beers and an appetizer in the Tavern. The Gamble Mill offers both a fine-dining menu featuring American flavors and classic dishes, and a more casual Tavern-side menu, offering a selection of pub-style food with unique details. Both menus offer selections that are expertly prepared, and make use of local ingredients like Amish cheeses from Goot Essa farms, Pennsylvania mushrooms, and locally raised pork. In its large upstairs dining room, the Gamble Mill also offers professional event services and can accommodate up to 200 guests. Outdoor seating is available during the warm months of the year. The Gamble Mill is only a 15-minute drive from Penn State or State College, and from the Bellefonte exit on Interstate 80. Reservations are recommended for major event weekends.

A Tradition of Delicious, Unforgettable Dining Fine dining, award-winning wine selection, and fresh seafood in a historic Four Diamond hotel can be found right here in Happy Valley. An unmatched meal that exceeds the highest expectations occurs inside the elegant walls of The Dining Room at the Nittany Lion Inn. Next door, Whiskers provides a relaxed setting in a classic pub-style restaurant. Both have the menu, service, and atmosphere for any occasion. For more than 80 years, The Nittany Lion Inn has provided generations of Penn Staters, fans, and visitors with the most memorable and satisfying hotel experience. The hotel’s pristine surroundings and dedicated staff add to its appeal. The Inn embraces the collegiate atmosphere of the University Park campus and creates a welcoming and comfortable stay for alumni returning to their alma mater or visitors wanting to experience the Penn State spirit. It’s no wonder that University President Eric Walker dubbed the Inn, “Penn State’s Living Room.” Located on the corner of Park Avenue and Atherton St., the Inn is convenient in several ways. It’s on campus, near downtown State College, and has plenty of parking in the adjacent Nittany Lion parking deck. Stop in for a meal while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of University Park, or reserve a table before an exciting Penn State sporting or concert event. The Inn was recently awarded AAA Four Diamond status, a recognition given to only 17 hotels in the state. The dedication to customer service and quality are shared in the hotel’s restaurants. Both locations are open to the public and committed to creating an experience, product, and atmosphere that is perfectly memorable. The Dining Room The Dining Room has been a Penn State tradition since the Inn opened in 1931. Even in its earliest days, the restaurant catered for the sophisticated diner in all of us. Guests walk in to sparking chandeliers, beautifully adorned tables, and an atmosphere that completes the Inn’s tradition of great service and delicious food. Favorites from the menu include the Inn’s famous crab cakes, delicious lobster bisque, and a wine list that has won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every year since 2002. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Dining Room boasts a wealth of tastes in an unforgettable atmosphere that makes every meal—whether it’s lunch with coworkers or dinner with your family—special. On Friday nights, the Inn hosts the immensely popular 32

Seafood Spectacular Buffet. Fresh seafood is delivered that day and Inn chefs cook up a mix of new, creative dishes and old favorites. Many regulars of the Inn frequent the Friday night buffet. Reservations are suggested. The Dining Room also hosts extremely popular Sunday brunches. Diners wrap up their weekend with a huge buffet of waffles, made-to-order omelets, carved meats, and more. The daily lunch buffets are those of legend and frequently attract the hungry members of the campus community. The Dining Room has a menu of favorites, but they are not all food. Customers looking to enjoy a unique experience in a private room reserve the Inn’s special areas like the Penn State Room, the Alumni Fireside Lounge, and the many writing rooms. Each room showcases its own allure and feel. They are perfect for events ranging in sizes and styles. The highest quality dining experience is located on campus and in the hearts of everyone who has ever enjoyed a meal at the Inn. Those ready for something different and special can find it at The Dining Room. Whiskers Set in the middle of one of the Inn’s beautiful courtyards, Whiskers creates a relaxing pub-style feel for family, friends, and coworkers. Guests enjoy delicious meals below Pennsylvania-cut cherry wood ceiling and trim. There is a large array of mouth-watering choices on the Whiskers menu and a feel-good attitude from the staff, as well as the diners. Open for lunch, dinner, and late night dining, Whiskers’ charm is a major draw for hotel guests, locals, and visitors alike. Large salads, sandwiches, and many of the Inn’s most popular dishes are available every day. Enjoy a basket of crispy Buffalo wings, the popular Inn cheese steak, or several specialty hamburgers. Add a refreshing craft brew to your meal. Whiskers has a list of both national and local beers bottled and on tap. On sunny summer and spring days, diners can enjoy lunch in the courtyard. The Whiskers staff will serve you as you take in a beautiful Happy Valley day surrounded by the Inn’s classic Georgian-style white brick and shale roof. Clem’s, The Most Mouthwatering BBQ in Happy Valley A multi-year winner of State College Magazine’s Best Barbecue award, Clem’s Wood-Fired BBQ is a barbecue staple in Happy Valley. Previously located on Route 322 between State College and Port Matilda, Clem’s was a Sunday tradition for those leaving town after Penn State football games or heading to Pittsburgh to catch the Steelers at Heinz Field. Traffic slowed nearly to a halt when people spotted that smoke rising into the sky and caught a whiff of the barbecue scent permeating the area around the plain wooden signs that simply said, “BBQ.” The completion of Route 99 diverted most of that traffic, so Clem’s State College location is now in the Brewsky’s Bottle Shop in the Little Red Schoolhouse at the intersection of East Branch Road and S. Atherton Street. Clem’s operates one additional location – which

is used primarily as a catering center, although counter service is also available – in Tipton, near DelGrosso’s Amusement Park, and another at Seven Points Marina on Raystown Lake in Hesston. At the State College take-out location, sandwich selections include hand-pulled pork barbecue, boneless country rib, pulled barbecue chicken and a grilled chicken fillet. Or, come really hungry and enjoy one of Clem’s combos, like the Hearty Combo, which includes baby back ribs a chicken, or Clem’s Trio, a mouthwatering combination of ribs, chicken and country ribs. If you just can’t decide, Clem’s offers a build-your-own combo option, which allows you to choose one, two, or three of their famous meats: pulled pork, baby back ribs, boneless country ribs, pulled chicken, chicken leg quarters and chicken fillets. In addition to the counter service, Clem’s offers larger to-go options and party packs serve three to five people each, and paired with their sidekicks of coleslaw, garlic mashed potatoes, baked beans, potato salad and rolls, are perfect for smaller get togethers and tailgates. If you’re hoping for an event that no one will soon forget, check out Clem’s Catering. In addition to their famous pork barbecue, ribs and chicken, Clem’s Catering offers grilled hot dogs, thick-cut ham steaks, shrimp or steak skewers, kids’ meals and even vegetarian options. All meals are packed in foil pans, priced per person and include three sides, utensils and paperware and fresh-baked rolls. With several service levels to choose from, Clem’s will work with you to ensure that your event is a success.

Vale Wood Farms Offers Quality Dairy Products “from Moo to You!” A family-owned and operated dairy located in Loretto, Pennsylvania, Vale Wood Farms has been providing quality dairy products to Central Western PA since our founder C.A. Itle started in 1933. Built on old fashioned ideals, the Itle family’s farm is still committed to producing the highest quality dairy products and maintaining a happy, healthy herd of cows. The original farm has grown from five acres to approximately 500 acres. The Itle family takes pride in maintaining their strong sense of heritage as they continue to milk their own herd of 200 registered Holstein dairy cows. This milk, along with milk from other local family farms, is processed and packaged in their own processing plant. The plant is located in the countryside, close to the cows that produce the high quality milk. This means that the milk that is delivered to homes today is often fresh from the farm yesterday! Vale Wood Farms is proud to meet standards that certify the farm as “cow friendly.”

Vale Wood Farms offers delivery of a full line of dairy products to homes, schools, restaurants, and stores within about an hour radius of our farm. The small size allows Vale Wood to concentrate on providing dependable service and quality dairy products to local customers. Weekly home delivery is available to Altoona, Johnstown, Indiana, State College, and all of the great small towns in between, with a full line of dairy products, including milk, cottage cheese, ice cream, butter, and much more. To help teach the local community about their farming tradition, school tours are available by appointment. The tours follow the entire milk story “from moo to you.” Order online at www.valewoodfarms.com or call 814-886-7171 or 1-800-861-MILK.

The local-focused menu and house-crafted beers are so delicious, mom and dad will indulge then. Grab a souvenir t-shirt on the way out…and maybe a onesie for the baby –because they have those, too. *Fun tip: Cap off your lunch or dinner with a movie at College 9. Luna 2 Wood Grill and Bar – What is the most kidfriendly food on the planet? Pizza, of course. Luna 2 offers 13 variations of their wood-fired pizza, with the option to create your own masterpiece. Try a classic like Margherita or pep-

peroni. Or, introduce your kids to new flavors like artichokes, eggplant, and pesto. The menu is rounded out with a long list of entrees, pastas and sandwiches. There’s no official kids menu, so if you’re kid’s not a pizza eater, check out the salads, burgers and sandwiches. *Fun tip: Head over to nearby Fun Unleashed, or see a movie at Premiere 12. Luna 2 is also a great option for dining before a sporting event or concert event at the Bryce Jordan Center. Bonfatto’s – Bonfatto’s is a family-run business dating back to 1910 that focuses on serving the families, and the ‘real people’ of Happy Valley. The menu offers something for even the pickiest eater. The atmosphere is casual, but Bonfatto’s is serious about good food, especially their famous Bonanza Subs and award-winning wing sauces. Pizza, burgers and a well-rounded kids menu also make it a good choice. If you’re out for a treat, ask for the dessert menu. *Fun tip: Make a day of it in Victorian Bellefonte with a walk through the historic downtown. Stop at Pure Imagination Toy Store and visit the ducks at Talleyrand Park. Kids will love the playground and a stroll over Spring Creek on the old iron bridge. Baby’s Burgers and Shakes –Poodle Skirts are optional at Baby’s Burgers and Shakes. This 50s throwback restaurant is fun for kids young and old. Even the kids menu features Baby’s signature burger, the ‘Whimpy.’ Each kids meal comes with a free Teeny-Weeny, a small fudge sundae. Sundays and Tuesdays kids 12 and under eat free from 4pm to close! You can’t get more budget-friendly than free! *Fun tip: Check for a kid-friendly showing at the State Theatre or treat the kids to a visit to the Growing Tree Toy Store. There’s also the Penn State Sports Museum, Tussey Mountain Family Fun Center, and Happy Valley Minigolf just a short drive away.
