Non-profits Bringing Fun and Community to Happy Valley The State Theatre
Thanks to a generous gift from community members and a group of dedicated volunteers, The State Theatre reopened in 2006 after a five-year hiatus, breathing new life into Happy Valley’s arts and culture, indie music and film scenes. Mount Nittany Conservancy
With nearly nine miles of volunteer-maintained trails and scenic views, Mt. Nittany offers a unique setting for local recreation. Since 1981, the Mount Nittany Conservancy has built and continued to maintain trails and overlooks on Mt. Nittany, allowing for generations of “Centre Countians, Penn Staters and other lovers of the outdoors” to enjoy all the mountain has to offer. The Palmer Museum of Art
A gem in our small town, The Palmer boasts free admission and dozens of special events and exhibits each year. The museum offers an ever-changing display of exhibitions, in addition to its permanent collection. The Palmer has 11 galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, and an outdoor sculpture garden. There are plenty of things to do, from hiking and bike rides, to hot air balloon rides and old-fashioned carriage rides.
Bike Trails State College and its surrounding areas have numerous biking paths that will lead you to a variety of locations and enjoyable events for you and your whole family. If you don’t have a bike of your own, don’t fret; simply head over to The Bicycle Shop on West College Ave. to rent one from there. For a low key bike ride, there are many bike path loops that will take you around The Penn State University Campus and the surrounding areas, including The Bellefonte Central Bike Trail (1.3 miles) and The Park Hills Bike Path Loop (about 5.3 miles). For the more adventurous type, there are mountain bike trails in the area. 10th Annual Penn State Uplifting Athletes “Lift For Life”: July 13 This popular event will be held from 5-7 p.m. during the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College. The format and location for the 10th Annual Penn State Football Uplifting Athletes Lift for Life will be announced at a later date. Over its first nine years, the Penn State Lift For Life has grown tremendously. Again last year, more than 80 Nittany Lion football student-athletes tested their strength and endurance in a strength and conditioning challenge that raised a record total for kidney cancer awareness and assistance. Lift For Life is open to the public with a small donation suggested for all attendees to benefit the Kidney Cancer Association. Fans will have a chance to meet and get autographs from current and former members of the Penn State Football team.
