With direct service to three major metro areas, you can take to the sky to come and go as you please. • Northwest Airlines (Delta) has service to and from Detroit three times a day. • United Express flys to and from Washington/Dulles four times a day. • US Airways Express to and from Philadelphia has flights almost nonstop throughout the week. Delicious Dining for All Despite its identification as a college town, State College caters to all age groups when it comes to the restaurant industry. Sure there is no shortage of places that cater to the college-age crowd, with late-night munchies such as burgers, chili cheese fries and wings smothered in hot sauce. However, if you are looking for a more elegant meal, that isn’t always deep-fried, there are plenty of options to suit you.
American Ale House
American Ale House Enjoy a meal or a drink in the soothing music of the American Ale House’s piano bar. The restaurant is home to local musician Tommy Wareham, who plays the piano in the bar and has been voted the “Number 1 Entertainer” by State College Magazine five years in a row. He performs Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. If you want a meal along with some great live entertainment, the American Ale House is the best bet. Americanalehouse.net Allen Street Grill Situated on the corner of Allen Street and College Avenue, the Allen Street Grill provides guest a terrific dining option right in the heart of downtown State College and across the gates from Penn State University. The head brew master at Elk Creek, Tim Yarrington draws inspiration from traditional English ales for his beers. The head chef, Mark Johnson, has focused the Café on preparing their dishes from scratch using a process called, “Noveau Dutchie Cuisine.” Elkcreekcafe.net Gamble Mill Restaurant & Microbrewery Whether it’s for a brewery tour, a drink at the bar or an enjoyable meal, there’s always a reason to stop in at the Gamble Mill. The Gamble Mill features a relaxed, casual atmosphere while serving classic American dishes. Kelly’s Steak and Seafood Located in Boalsburg, Kelly’s Steak and Seafood has some of the best seafood dishes around. Kelly’s imports different seafood from all around the country as the seasons change. Kelly’s Ahi Tuna is flown in fresh from Hawaii and they have previously brought Copper River Salmon from the Copper River in Alaska. Kelly’s also features a special selection of wines that can’t be sampled anywhere else in the area. They have white wines from Torino, Italy and Marlborough, New Zealand as well as several locations in the pacific northwest. They have a red wine bottle in house named, Jindalee Shiraz imported from South East Australia along with other red wines from notable locations around the world including Sonoma, and Tuscany, Italy. Kelly’s-steak.com Mt Nittany Inn Located on top of the Centre Hall Mountain overlooking the picturesque Penns Valley, the Mt Nittany Inn provides a setting you won’t find elsewhere in the area. Enjoy a causal meal or a drink with friends at the Inn’s Looking Glass Lounge. Mtnittanyinn.com Otto’s Pub & Brewery Otto’s is well-known around the area for the locally crafted brews, and you will find many of their beer selections at bars located all around town. Every Friday is “Firkin’ Friday” at Otto’s, which is one of the best local traditions. This is how real ale is meant to be tasted. A firkin is a “British-style cask of ale that is conditioned in the cask and gravity poured for a real ale taste.” Beginning at 5 p.m. every Friday, “a tap is handriven into the firkin with a mallet” allowing the fresh ale to flow freely. From the Chef… The Tavern Restaurant This tradition-rich restaurant welcomes you back to the 18th century with it’s unique design including antique cupboards and “burnished brass lamps that shine brightly on mellow wood brick and stone.” The Tavern is one of the prime dinner spots in State College, as it’s located right along College Avenue in the center of town and it has been since it opened in 1948. Zola’s bar area has leather couches so you can enjoy a drink with your friends in comfort. Without a doubt, Zola is one of the most, if not the most stylish restaurant to eat at in town. Andrew Monk is the new executive chef at the Nittany Lion Inn and he is thinking local for ways to advance the kitchen’s product. Monk served as sous chef (or primary assistant to the head chef ) for the past six years at the hotel before his first official day as executive chef on May 7. And since that time, Monk’s number one objective is focusing the direction of the hotel’s kitchen on producing food with local products and sustainable options. “If you look at American cuisine, it’s all different influences from the immigration that comes to this country,” Monk said. “If you can take those influences and put them through seasonally available product from your area, you kind of have yourself an American cuisine.” Monk said he wants to continue to build local infrastructure through partnerships with Penn State and area farmers markets although it won’t be done quickly. “I think it’s going to take some time building that infrastructure, building those relationships,” he said.
Carnegie Inn & Spa Fine dining is exemplified at the Carnegie Inn & Spa. Thrills, Rides and Games at Local Parks Looking for something exciting to do that the entire family will enjoy? There are several family friendly and affordable amusement parks located not far from the State College area. DelGrosso’s Amusement Park, in Tipton, Pa., remains the only permanent amusement park in the Happy Valley region. DelGrosso’s has rides for all ages and heights and is sure to be fun for the entire family. Enjoy everything from roller coasters to the splash of water slides featured at Tipton Waterworks and what’s an amusement park without food? DelGrosso’s features some of the best local food including Murf ’s delicious potato salad, fresh pizza, fresh roast beef, and even DelGrosso’s very own sausage. If it’s late in the evening, enjoy one of the free concerts featured at DelGrosso’s throughout the summer. The DelGrosso’s water park features Tipton Waterworks, a wading pool for kids and adults alike, along with Tipton Rapids water slides. The water slides are twisted mazes that send patrons screaming through tunnels on inflated rafts. “Gravity Groove” will actually propel you uphill and “Midnight Express” tunnelled water slides will be sure to have your adrenaline pumping. Knoebels has children’s rides, thrill rides, family rides and more. Ride the Allegrippis Biking Trails Designed by mountain bikers and built by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, the trails are the premier single-track mountain biking trail system. Rent a boat or go hiking, or simply enjoy the view and the fresh air. Raystown can be explored a wide variety of ways, if not by boat or bike, go by horseback or by motorcycle. The trails are perfect for cross-country skiing in the winter. Visit Rockhill Trolley Museum to go back in time and learn about some of the region’s history, by learning about how electric trolleys provided the primary transportation back in the old days. And of course, what better way to learn then by taking a ride on a trolley? Some of the trolley cars were built in the early 1900s and are still in use today. The Museum is only open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Regular fare is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages two to 12. Children under the age of two are free. Water Works: Cool Off at Local Parks Cool off with many of the man-made or natural lakes that Central Pennsylvania has to offer as well as DelGrosso’s Tipton Water Works & Rapids. Many visitors and locals marvel at the outstanding beauty of Central PA’s habitat and woodland. Why not enjoy the scenery and spend an afternoon at one the many swimming areas in Happy Valley. Spend a day at the beach in the middle of Central Pennsylvania at Whipple Dam State Park, a delightful and quiet place to visit. The lake is the perfect place to indulge in a refreshing dip, bird watch or just relax. The beautiful day use area is wonderful for a picnic or hike. The 22-acre Whipple Lake is great for canoeing, sailing, kayaking and electric-powered motorboating. In the summer season, a boat rental offers canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and rowboats. Whipple Lake and Laurel Run are stocked with trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in the spring and winter months. Whipple Dam also is a great place to explore the wetlands of Centre County. Explore one of the many rivers and streams that feed into Whipple Dam. An alert observer may catch a glimpse of a black bear, a white-tailed deer, or a wild turkey. Ospery, great blue heron and Canadian geese visit the lake. On quiet evenings, muskrat and beavers may be seen on the water. However,feeding the animals is prohibited. Whipple Dam has three large pavilions, that are close to the beach and are perfect for picnics or birthday parties. There is a also a snack bar close to the beach. Hand operated and pressurized drinking fountains, charcoal stoves and restrooms are throughout the park. The 300-foot sand beach is open from May to mid-September, 8 a.m. to sunset. Swim at your own risk. A dressing room, beach volleyball court and boat rental are at the beach. Raystown Lake is an 8,300-acre man-made impoundment of the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. What most people like about the lake is that except for just a few miles that are developed, nature’s beauty is the backdrop while you are enjoying the lake. Eight launch ramps are available for boaters, the lake has no size or horsepower restrictions, and personal watercrafts are welcome. Picnic pavilions are available for rent and weekend events are provided at the Seven Points Amphitheater. Hiking trails have been developed in four areas of the facility. See Raystown Lake in style. Cruise miles and miles of shoreline from Seven Points Marina to the breast of the dam while listening to stories of historic landmarks of days gone by, and observing people and wildlife of the lake. The captain will explain the workings of the dam and if luck spins your way, you may catch a glimpse of the resident American Bald Eagles during the tour. The marina’s rental fleet includes fishing boats, ski pontoon boats, and 18 houseboats. Popular activity with young and old is the fish feeding station. Snacks and beverages are for sale on board. In July and August surface temps are 75-80 degrees. With so many activities and excitement, it is almost impossible to not have any fun at Raytown Lake. If you’re looking to spend a 16

Caves and Caverns Offer Beauty and Break from Heat Happy Valley is known for its beauty above ground, but there’s plenty to see below ground at the local caverns in the area. Come to Central PA to see the underbelly of the beautiful landscape and mountain ranges. Explore the Caverns and Caves, either by foot or boat, and learn a little too. Come see Penn’s Cave, America’s only all-water cavern and wildlife park, or Indian Caverns, which has been owned and operated by the Wertz family for generations. Woodward Cavern cleverly nicknamed the “Big One” after its large spacious five-roomed cavern. Last but certainly not least, Lincoln Caverns offers plenty of educational opportunities, not just for children but for adults as well. Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park Penn’s Cave offers tours by boat! The Penn’s Cave tour is a one-hour boat ride through the limestone cavern. Penn’s Cave is a stunning landmark which features glittering stalactites and stalagmites that form into mysterious figures nicknamed the “Statue of Liberty” and the “Garden of the Gods.” In the summer time, the cool 52-degree cave temperature can be quite a relief from the oppressive heat above ground. See the miraculous flow stones along the backdrop of pillars and columns. Penn’s Cave also features a wildlife tour which can be partly seen from the cavern tour when it makes a trek on Lake Nitanee before turning around to return to the cavern dock. The Wildlife Tour is given by bus and features many natural fauna that are now rare throughout the Pennsylvania landscape. Throughout the 1,500 acres, Penn’s Cave is home to a Nittany Lion, bison, black bears, and wolves. The tour will not only be eyepopping but educational as well. Come learn about the geography, geology and biology of Centre County. Penn’s Cave is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and tickets must be purchased on-site. Advanced reservation is required for groups of 20 or larger. Tickets are available for the Cavern/Wildlife tour package as well as each, separately. Penn’s Cave is located 18 miles East of State College. Interstate 80 is about 30 minutes from the cavern. For more information: pennscave.com Lincoln Caverns Located in Huntingdon, Lincoln Caverns was discovered in 1930 during the construction of U.S. Route 22. Orginally named Hi-Way Caverns, it was renamed after President Lincoln by then owner Myron Dunlavy Sr. Ownership of the caverns still remains to the Dunlavy family, as Dunlavy’s granddaughter Ann has presided over the caverns since 1977. Lincoln Caverns offers a one-hour tour of two caverns on site, Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks. During the tours, guests can learn about underground rock formations such as stalactites and massive flowstones. Lincoln Cavern’s website states that its “goal is to provide an educational and enjoyable experience while preserving the natural beauty and splendor of the caverns for future generations.” Some of Its natural beauty extends above ground. Guests can see the
beauty by way of nature tours where you may find deer, rabbits or other animals in their natural habitat. Indian Caverns Indian Caverns has been owned and operated by the Wertz family since 1929. Indian Caverns sit in the foothills of Tussey Mountain Ridge and the cavern is known as a “horizontal karst cave,” with limestone deposits 405 million years old. The tour covers almost a mile of passages and it is the largest limestone cavern in Pennsylvania. Indian Caverns is a “living cave” in that many of the flow stones and rock formations are still growing. “The Frozen Niagara,” remains one of the largest flowstones in the northeast. In addition to dazzling rock structures, the tour features experienced and knowledgeable guides who know about Native American history and artifacts that are found in the caverns but also local folklore and legend. Indian Caverns features gravel and cement walkways which are accessible for senior citizens as well as children. The walkways are illuminated by electric lights. The caverns stay a constant 56 degrees fahrenheit and it is recommended to bring a sweater or a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes. Tours begin at 10 a.m., and finish at 5 p.m. The caverns are open at seven days a week throughout the summer months. For more information: indiancaverns.com Woodward Cave Woodward Cave is one of the largest caverns in Pennsylvania and is nicknamed the “Big One.” The caverns are divided into spacious rooms nicknamed “The Ballroom,” which has been used to actually host dances, “The Square Room,” and the “Hanging Forest.” The “Hanging Forest” features a one of the largest collections of stalactites and stalagmites featuring the “Tower of Babel,” a stalagmite 14 feet high. Woodward Cave also has an extensive campground that can accommodate both tents and RV’s. The site is both electric and non-electric. The “Hall of Statues” features one of the largest stalagmites in the region. The “Upper Room” is the fifth and final room and there is a cathedral ceiling which rises 60 feet from the floor below. Cabins are also available for rent and feature a kitchen, living room, electricity and satellite TV. Woodward Cave is located on Route 45 in Centre County in Woodward, Pa, halfway between State College and Lewisburg. It is open seven days a week, rain or shine. The cave remains a constant 48 degrees year-round so a jacket and proper footwear is recommended. Flashlight tours for groups are available by appointment. All camp sites are on grassy turfs. Sites can accommodate tents and RV’s, and sites are available in both electric and non-electric. Cabins are available to rent nightly or weekly. Parking is free. Arts Fest 2012 The State College area is home to many festivals, but there is simply none that draws more attention than the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, or “ArtsFest” as it’s commonly known. A summer staple in Happy Valley since 1967, the five-day festival brings more than 125,000 people annually to downtown State College and the Penn State University campus. Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts This year’s festival is set from July 11-15. While the arts and musical performances are the primary reason for the large crowds, ArtsFest is a chance for alumni and former residents to return to the area and catch up with friends. In a sense, it’s almost like one big reunion every July. The first Arts Festival was held on the Penn State side of College Avenue and organizers were not sure how successful the event would become. However, it became apparent that the “sidewalk sale” and music were both popular attractions to the crowd. In fact, the number of artists grew larger each day as word of the sale spread. There are many different components of ArtsFest. There’s the numerous vendors selling different styles of food. There’s Greek food from Pittsburgh-based Nick the Greek featuring gyros, Mediterranean salad and coconut shrimp on a stick. Chan’s Golden Gate, also from Pittsburgh, will feature Asian cuisine, with egg rolls,

shrimp fried, rice chicken on a stick and much more. Chesapeake Diversified Foods will bring surf and turf from Chestertown, Md., as it will serve london broil and crab cakes at the top of its menu. If you’re in the mood for more of a snack, then you really can’t go wrong by sampling some of Hanson’s Kettle Corn. Of course, if none of those options entices you, there is no shortage of great restaurants in town with establishments such as The Corner Room, Allen Street Grill and The Tavern providing some of the best State College has to offer. Then there’s the actual artwork itself and where do you even begin? There’s sand sculptures, ceramic designs, metal, drawings, glass and so much more when it comes to the type of art there is to see and purchase. In fact, there will be more than 300 exhibitors on hand selling and displaying their work. The sidewalk sale is nationally recognized and has been ranked one of the “top outdoor fine art and fine craft shows in the nation.” There is a high demand for artists to be featured in this festival. As part of the selection process, ArtsFest officials reviewed more than 1,100 artists from the United States and around the world, before selecting the final batch of artists. Then there’s the musical performances which will display many different genres of music. Hip-Hop, Country, Irish, and Jazz just to name a few. There will be local favorites such as Ted and the Hi Fi’s as well as Pure Cane Sugar. However, other bands will come from all over including “Comas,” a Celtic band with members from Ireland, Belgium and the U.S., that has performed in music festivals all over Europe. The main stretch of the Arts Festival continues to be South Allen Street, where many of the colorful banners hang overhead and the water buckets that so many children can be seen playing under are located.
Here is freelance writer and Happy Valley native Alan Finnecy’s take on the festival route and South Allen Street: “Though the Arts Festival’s route has changed over time, the 100 block of South Allen Street, with its colorful temporary landscaping, has remained the epicenter. During early Festivals, wooden platforms lined the sloping street and people crowded around them to watch “Artists in Action.” The late Clyde Doll, a woodcarver, was a perennial favorite and a longtime supporter of the Festival. Porcelain artist Grace Pilato also demonstrated her technique to passersby. Ever mindful of the gridlock that can slow foot traffic to a crawl, organizers eventually moved the artist demonstrations to less crowded locales. But the popular Allen Street stage has stayed, though its exact location has varied, and the street is still landscaped for the occasion. Some years ago, the popular water feature—known to the bathing suit–clad kids who frequent it as “the buckets”—was added.” A recent ArtsFest tradition that just began last year and returns for the second consecutive year is the Pat Farrell Community Sing Along scheduled for July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the State College Presbyterian Church. State College used to hold a weekly “community sing” in the 1970s when it was directed by Frank Gullo, the director of Penn State’s Glee Club, and Hummel Fishburn, the director of The Blue Band. The tradition was restored last year in memory of Pat Farrell a former ArtsFest board president. There’s no restrictions on how good of a singer you need to be, so get in the community spirit and sing along to traditional songs, folk melodies and other show tunes.
Annual sand sculpture in Central Parklet For running and jogging enthusiasts, the The Sue Crowe Memorial 37th Annual Arts Festival Races will take place Sunday morning, July 15 at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee is $20 on the day of the race, although it is $19 if registrations are made through the mail or online before July 13. There will be a Kid Fun Run beginning at 11 a.m. later that day. For kids ages 5-8 the race will be a quarter mile and for kids ages 9-12 the race will be a half mile. Two Historic Films to be Shown The Arts Festival, along with The State Theatre and the Penn State University Libraries Special Collections Library will proudly feature two Fred Waring films, “Syncopation” and “Varsity Show.” Waring was born in 1900 in nearby Tyrone. He was a distinguished alumnus and trustee of Penn State University and traveled around the world for seven decades developing skills and building accomplishments in radio, television and music education. Waring has been called “The man who taught America how to sing.” His collection at the Penn State library is called, “Fred Waring’s America” and it serves as a source of material for researchers to understand popular culture in the early 20th century. “Syncopation” was just the second ever motion picture to feature sound on film and was the first film to feature RCA’s “photophone” sound on film process. There only two-known copies of this film in the world and Penn State’s Waring Collection holds one of them. “Varsity Show,” was produced in 1937 and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Dance Production. To gain entry to both of these films, which will be shown at the State Theatre, visitors will need to purchase a festival button for $10. Children’s buttons are $5 for kids ages 6-12. Airborne Over Happy Valley Happy Valley is well known for its surrounding natural beauty. Its rolling hills and mountains, lined with luscious green trees that crowd the mountainsides. Its numerous lakes and streams are some of the most pristine you will find. Even when the weather is stormy, it’s a wonder to see the clouds roll in over the mountains in the distance.
