City Identity

Resilience of Spirit

Lost Landmarks

Living Memory

Three informative spaces that reference the outer suburbs which were damaged in the earthquakes. These forms create a new anchor of identity within Christchurch’s urban fabric - one that is intrinsically connected to the mana of the Avon River.

Black granite sculptures part the waters of the Avon River to acknowledge the strength and resilience of Cantabrians when faced with the on-going challenges the earthquakes brought. The concave forms allow water to be collected, reflecting the surrounding context and atmosphere.

These sculptural forms symbolise the landmarks and buildings that have been lost from the fabric of the city. Crafted from reclaimed steel they are unnamed pillars of remembrance.

The curved connecting walkway provides the space for quiet reflection and individual remembrance. The names of those who lost their lives in the February 22nd earthquake will be engraved in perforated steel, allowing light to gently filter into this commemorative space.
