FAIR, SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS The eight main requirements for fair, safe working conditions are outlined in our Code of Conduct. FAIR WEAR LEADER STATUS Since 2010 we have been members of the Fair Wear Foundation, which aims to improve work-place conditions in the garment and textile industry throughout the world, and have been awarded Leader Status for three years in a row.
ANIMAL WELFARE ANIMAL WELFARE IN DOWN PRODUCTION All our down products conform to the “Responsible Down Standard”. Live plucking and force feeding of birds is prohibited. BAN ON FUR We are a member of the Fur Free Retailer Programme, which is coordinated in Germany by the animal welfare organisation Vier Pfoten. None of our fur trims are of animal origin; they are made exclusively from high quality synthetic fur.
FREE FROM HARMFUL SUBSTANCES 100% ORGANIC COTTON Since 2013, we have exclusively used organic cotton, produced without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or genetically modified seeds. GREEN BOOK Our Green Book lists the harmful substances that our production facilities are strictly banned from using. PFC EXIT STRATEGY ALMOST COMPLETE With our spring 2019 collection we have achieved our aim of eliminating PFCs from all our apparel products, well ahead of the date we set ourselves. BAN ON NANOTECHNOLOGY We have not used nanotechnologies since 2010 as there are currently no definitive long-term studies which prove they are safe. PVC-FREE SINCE 2012 We have stopped using PVC in all our products due to the impact it has on the environment when it is burned. SYSTEM PARTNER
BLUESIGN® SYSTEM PARTNERSHIP With the help of the bluesign® system, we operate a comprehensive chemicals management system throughout all stages of our supply chain using the best technology available. Our aim is to implement this for 100% of our products by the year 2020.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION MICROPLASTICS - THE NEXT CHALLENGE In order to tackle the issue of microplastics in the oceans, we are gathering knowledge and working hard on solutions – not just for JACK WOLFSKIN, but for the entire industry. ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE We recycle production waste back into the production cycle in the form of high quality raw materials. This is how we make our TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE, MICROGUARD ECOSPHERE and NANUK ECOSPHERE recycled fabrics. DANIELE is the lead designer for our brand’s high-performance apparel products. He is the brains behind the Texapore Ecosphere concept. How did you come up with the idea of TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE? Sustainability is ingrained in our brand DNA. When we are developing new products and technologies, we are always looking to minimise any negative impact on the environment and people. In this particular case we were focusing on production waste. We asked ourselves how we might be able to turn that waste into high quality raw materials. How many years did it take to develop TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE? We spent two years on the development. In 2016 we brought out the first prototypes and in 2017 we showcased them at the ISPO sports trade fair. By spring 2018 we were using the membrane in 12 jacket models and they sold very well. That was the proof we needed. What do you mean when you say that TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE is the first 100% recycled* weather protection. All of the main fabrics in our TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE styles are produced from recycled materials. In other words, the membrane and fabric of the outer layer of the jacket are made from 100% recycled materials. The lining fabrics in the jacket are also made from 100% recycled materials. But the jacket as a whole still isn’t 100% recycled. The devil is in the detail — in other words, all the small components that make up the rest of the jacket, like the buttons or zips for example.
What are the benefits of TEXAPORE ECOSPHERE? The membrane is entirely free from PFCs, it is manufactured in a sustainable way that conserves resources and it provides the same level of performance as our TEXAPORE O2+ fabric. It is also very durable. To extend the life of our jackets, we offer an reproofing and repair service. Are you planning any further improvements to the sustainability of the brand’s manufacturing processes? We are currently working on developing new technologies and further improving existing ones. It’s not just about individual products, it’s about taking a holistic approach. This season we’ve substantially increased our upcycling efforts by manufacturing our NANUK ECOSPHERE fleece and MICROGUARD ECOSPHERE thermal insulation from 100% recycled materials. With the help of bluesign®, we continue to focus on manufacturing processes that do not use harmful substances, and on social and fair working conditions. Also, the exclusive use of organic cotton, RDS certified down and GRS certified recycled products, plus transparency in the supply chain, underpin all the sustainability efforts at JACK WOLFSKIN.

1982
THE IDEA OF THE CENTURY
I
t was in 1982 that JACK WOLFSKIN designed the first double jacket. The idea was so new that we obtained utility model protection from the German Patent Office. In those days, outdoor clothing was not as evident on the streets as it is today. It was more usual for people to buy a functional jacket in preparation for their next big mountain trip or holiday abroad. Complex manufacturing processes also meant that these water-proof, breathable jackets were comparatively expensive. Buying one jacket for summer use and another for winter required a hefty outlay.
The system of buttoning in a lining jacket for winter use and doing away with it in summer was a familiar set-up with old army jackets. But the innovation on JACK WOLFSKIN’s part was taking this lining and making it into a jacket in its own right. From one jacket there emerged three wear options that covered most seasons and most weather conditions. We named our first double jacket “Century”, demonstrating our confidence in the idea. Specialists from the outdoor industry were also convinced. The “Century” won us many fans and over the years we struggled to produce enough jackets for the fast growing market.

When the American company Malden Mills launched its new “Polartec®” material, JACK WOLFSKIN instantly became Europe’s second-largest producer of these new fleece jackets. Polartec® fleece fitted the double jacket concept perfectly and was ideal for use in our inner jackets. Today, there is a whole host of variations on the 3-in-1 jacket. With just a few exceptions, our outer jackets are always waterproof and breathable, while our inner jackets range from lightweight fleece to softshells and luxurious down jackets. Over the decades we have remained true to our original concept, and today there are numerous options for retrofitting additional components to upgrade a 3-in-1 jacket.

In the intervening 35+ years, the 3-in-1 jacket has virtually become synonymous with the JACK WOLFSKIN brand. And in that time, the users of this multi-functional jacket system have adopted it for everyday use. THE ONE FOR ME We focus on one. During the development phase of a 3-in-1 jacket, the focus is only ever on one jacket. The winter jacket has to work as if it were a stand-alone jacket. By the time we’ve hit the right configuration, we’ve already developed multiple versions, tested them, and discarded them. There is the cut to consider, the attributes of the materials and fabrics, elasticity, critical wear areas, moisture ingress points and cold bridges, and much more. But the two individual jackets must perform on their own as well. So, we make adjustments to pockets, collars, hoods and sleeves that work brilliantly on their own and, when combined with another jacket, fit together like pieces of a puzzle. That’s the key to a 3-in-1 jacket – it is based on an incredible amount of development work and practical experience. ur TEXAPORE waterproof technology is the functional core of almost all the 3-in-1 system outer jackets and many of our weatherproof shells. This middle layer between the outer fabric and the lining is reliably waterproof, allows moisture vapour to pass to the outside and is completely windproof. It means you can be independent of the weather and enjoy the wind and rain. We have invested in the development of our membranes and coatings for 35 years. During that time, we have managed to increase the performance of our TEXAPORE technology many times over. We have now reached a level that is extremely close to our ideal: A jacket that protects the wearer like a second skin. A jacket for life at home outdoors.

How do I choose the ideal Texapore jacket for me? All Texapore jackets are waterproof, breathable and windproof. The differences arise in the various levels of breathability and waterproof performance. For lengthy trips with a heavy pack, you should choose a higher waterproof rating. The more active you are and the more you sweat, the more important breathability performance becomes. Waterproof or Hyproof? All TEXAPORE jackets are reliably waterproof for regular use. With a hydrostatic head rating of 10,000–20,000 mm* they can withstand a very high water pressure. We use TEXAPORE HYPROOF for our extremely robust jackets and those designed for long trekking trips. In tests, this fabric withstands the pressure of a 30,000 mm* hydrostatic head, or water column, and remains extremely waterproof even after several thousand abrasion cycles.
We carry out moisture vapour permeability tests on all our membranes and coatings.
How breathable does my jacket need to be? Over a period of 24 hours, 6 litres of water (6,000 g) can evaporate** through one square metre of our basic TEXAPORE fabric. This is a very good rating and you might think it would be impossible to sweat any more than that. However, strenuous activity does not occur at a steady rate, so sweat is produced in short bursts and at specific points. That is why a higher breathability rating is often advantageous. TEXAPORE O2+ has a moisture vapour rating of 15,000 g/m2/24 h** and TEXAPORE INFINITY has an amazingly high rating of 35,000 g/m2/24 h**. The difference is noticeable. The more active you are, and the more prone to sweating you are, the higher the breathability rating you require from your clothing. What is so innovative about TEXAPORE AIR? With TEXAPORE AIR, in addition to moisture vapour transmission, a process of air exchange occurs through the membrane. Warm, moist air is expelled to the outside while fresh air flows in. This further improves wear comfort. The more you move and the faster you move, the more intensive this air exchange becomes. This makes TEXAPORE AIR the best choice for high-output activities. How does TEXAPORE work best? It is important that sweat is allowed to evaporate on the skin and reach the TEXAPORE layer as moisture vapour. Therefore, the layers of clothing under a TEXAPORE jacket must not absorb any moisture. It is important to wear functional fibres to maintain the best breathability performance.
Hydrostatic tests show how waterproof they are and give us a maximum hydrostatic head rating for the fabric.

How do I care for TEXAPORE? Wash your TEXAPORE jacket regularly (2–3 times per year), because dirt and residual sweat can impair its breathability and waterproof performance. The waterproof finish of the outer fabric should also be maintained, because a damp outer layer is less breathable.
