Message from Our Leadership Fiscal Year 2016 was truly one for the books! We celebrated a year of growth with restoration of 88 operating hours at our branches, Student Cards for 60,000 Duval County Public Schools students in kindergarten through fifth grade, and successful programs such as Project LEAP (Library Enhanced Access Program) and Smart Horizons Career Online High School that changed lives. The library is also transforming—evolving to keep ahead of your needs and expectations. We launched a new, improved website to serve you better; kicked off our Jax Makerspace where you can explore, collaborate and create; encouraged you to turn up the noise—and the fun— during Turn It UP Thursdays; improved the JaxLibrary app; and offered hundreds of technology classes to keep you ahead of the digital curve. Thanks to the budget approval by City Council and the support of Mayor Lenny Curry and his administration, we restored a total of 88 hours a week to our libraries, allowing eleven libraries to open an extra day, giving customers access to valuable services and resources. These increased hours have had a significant impact in our community, especially throughout the urban core, where libraries serve as a lifeline to internet access and job search opportunities. The Student Card initiative provided library cards to DCPS students in kindergarten through fifth grade, ensuring access to library print materials and audiobooks as well as electronic resources. Due to the success of the pilot program, we expanded the program to higher grades in the new school year. Project LEAP, a Jax Journey funded anti-crime initiative, has gone beyond the library’s walls to partner with dozens of community organizations to provide early literacy, adult literacy and digital success programs to thousands of young adults and children. Project LEAP students who passed the GED test are pursuing dreams of higher education.

Jacksonville Public Library earned the distinction of having the first Career Online High School graduate in Florida. We held the first COHS commencement ceremony in the state, and were inspired by the words of one graduate who described earning his diploma as “life changing.” To serve the critical literacy needs of adults in the northwest area, we opened a new Adult Learning Center at the Bradham and Brooks Branch Library in partnership with Learn to Read. We celebrated milestone anniversaries, the reopening of the beloved Willowbranch Branch Library, a new landscape makeover for the Beaches Branch Library, and the unveiling of The Joy of Discovery, a whimsical 50-foot mural sure to delight children and customers for years to come at the Main Library. In the year ahead, we’ll advocate for more hours—we need all libraries open seven days a week. We’ll work to make education and digital literacy resources accessible to all. We’ll continue to be your best source of accurate—and relevant—information. We’ll grow as the hub of family activity and we’ll remain a safe place open to all. On behalf of the Jacksonville Public Library staff and the Board of Library Trustees, we thank you for the opportunity to serve you and urge you to rediscover your library all over again.

Sincerely, Erin Vance Skinner Board of Library Trustees, Chair Barbara A. B. Gubbin Library Director

Expanding our DCPS Partnership

We kicked off our Student Card pilot program last year, partnering with Duval County Public Schools to ensure all 60,000 Duval County Public School students in kindergarten through fifth grades received a virtual library card. By using their student IDs, students could access library print materials, audiobooks and electronic resources. As part of the initiative, more than 27,700 DCPS students in kindergarten through second grades made visits with their classes to the library for a tour, storytime, and to check out books. Library staff made class visits to students in third through fifth grades. For many students, the DCPS field trip was their first time visiting a library and checking out a book. Students used their cards nearly 63,000 times to check out books and use computers. Libraries held school celebrations for DCPS elementary schools at the end of the school year. The Student Card program was so successful it was expanded to kindergarten through 12th grade for the new school year. 8

TWO NEW EDUCATOR RESOURCES

PREVENTING SUMMER SLIDE IS EPIC

Teachers need—and appreciate—our library’s support. Nearly 1,000 teachers are using Educator Cards introduced in the fall of 2015 to check out much-needed library materials to supplement their classroom resources. The library’s groundbreaking Educator Newsletter, filled with timely tips, topics, and resources is a hit with educators and principals; the subscriber list is growing.

The sports-and exercise-themed EPIC Summer Learning programs hit it out of the park with reading programs for all ages. In addition to prizes and incentives, it was the first time participants could earn cool online badges for reading and participating in activities.

Jacksonville Public Library received the Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN) Innovation Award for the Student Card initiative, which demonstrated impact on the community. Amber Holley, JPL Manager of Youth Services and Community Outreach, who led the development and implementation for the Student Card, received the NEFLIN Member of the Year Award.

With an emphasis on reading over the summer months, Summer Learning has proven to be one of the best ways to prevent summer slide—the loss of academic skills over summer break—so students don’t fall behind when they start back to school. Teens also honed their writing skills in a short story contest. All total, nearly 13,000 children, teens and adults read more than 139,000 books last summer through the library’s Summer Learning Program, generously supported by the Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library.

The Real Story behind Storytime

Library storytimes may seem like simple, straightforward fun. And while storytimes are engaging and entertaining, every storytime program includes at least five of six preliteracy skills children need to learn from birth to age 4. These are skills critical to vocabulary building and language learning, and can greatly impact children’s reading abilities when they reach school. Children ages 4 to 8 work on building their emergent literacy skills. Trained library staff led more than 3,800 storytimes last year, with more than 91,000 children and parents in attendance, and taught parents and caregivers how to reinforce skills with their own at-home storytimes. 9

New Tools for Student Success

Students have always counted on us for in-library workshops and tutoring in math, science and history fair help, test prep, and more. Last year we broadened tutoring and learning resources by adding some of the most sought-after online student resources.

Free Tutoring – Brainfuse HelpNow With a library card learners of every age can access live, expert tutors seven days a week from their mobile device or computer inside or outside of the library. When the library launched Brainfuse HelpNow, the online tutoring service received nearly 5,000 touches to its electronic resources the very first month from Jacksonville Public Library customers. One-on-one homework help is available for kindergarten through 12th grades in every subject including AP level. Services include Florida-aligned skills building (Common Core), test preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE and others), a comprehensive writing lab and more. Users can access safe, virtual study rooms and a 24/7 Question Center. HelpNow also includes college and adult learning. Available at the library and remotely with internet access.

Miss Humblebee’s Academy Fun, interactive and educational, this award-winning preparatory program helps children learn from beginning skill level through kindergarten proficiency with hundreds of lessons in math, science, social studies, language, literacy, art and music. The full, online program covers Common Core curriculum. Use your library card to access the child-friendly website on a laptop or computer. Kids love it because it’s fun and engaging. Parents like it because they can request progress reports to see what their child is learning. Available at the library and remotely with internet access.

ABC Mouse Kids ages 2 – 7 have another reason to visit the library—to play and learn with more than 3,500 interactive books, educational games, puzzles and learning activities on awarding-winning ABC Mouse. This excellent resource is used—and highly recommended—by many teachers. You’d have to pay for it outside of the library but it is free inside our 21 library locations.

Susan Mankowski, JPL Early Childhood Literacy Specialist earned the United Way of Northeast Florida Sherwood H. Smith Children’s Champion Award for advocacy efforts, which resulted in positive change impacting the well-being of children and youth throughout Northeast Florida. 10

TAKING A GIANT LEAP FOR ADULT LITERACY

Project LEAP

Project LEAP—Library Enhanced Access Program—goes beyond the library walls to provide critical literacy resources, library services, and educational programs to communities characterized by high crime, low income, poor academically performing schools, and low education rates. Project LEAP, a Jax Journey funded anti-crime initiative, focuses on early literacy through child/parent and caregiver language-building skills, digital literacy through computer classes, and adult literacy through GED preparation.

Outcomes and Futures By taking classes into underserved communities, Project LEAP ensures that our city’s at-risk population has access to language and digital literacy skills necessary to achieve educational and workforce success. Project LEAP partners with more than 40 community organizations throughout the city as well as churches, apartment complexes, schools, child care and learning centers to reach those in need. Hundreds of Project LEAP participants are on the path to a more positive and productive future, learning valuable skills, taking advantage of library services, and becoming lifelong library users. Project LEAP—it’s a game changer for many Jacksonville residents.

Highlands Regional Library Oct. 24, 2015 Beaches Branch Library May 21, 2016 Mandarin Branch Library June 18, 2016 Willowbranch Grand Reopening After undergoing lengthy repairs for water intrusion, Jacksonville’s oldest branch library, the Willowbranch Branch Library,

reopened Nov. 14, 2015 with interior and exterior improvements and more than 5,000 new materials for customers to borrow. Neighborhood families and friends attended a grand party enjoying music, activities, and a talk by historian/author Wayne Wood, who shared the details about the library’s unique, historic architecture. The celebration was made possible by donations from The Friends of the Willowbranch Library and local businesses.

Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit In the first exhibition of its kind from the Smithsonian, I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story celebrated Asian Pacific American history across a multitude of diverse cultures and explored how Asian Pacific Americans have shaped and been shaped by the course of our nation’s history. We hosted complementary programs with live music and dance representing Hawaii, China and India, panel discussions, and cultural immersion classes in Chinese and Japanese. The program was in partnership with the Mayor’s Asian American Advisory Board. The exhibit was supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Double the Fandom: Two Comic Cons The 4th Annual Beaches Branch Library Comic Con drew more than 2,000 fans for costume contests, cosplay demos, graphic novel artist encounters, and more. Willowbranch Branch Library held its first-ever Comic Con on the same day. It was a huge success drawing more than

400 people who came out to enjoy graphic novel artist Natalie McGriff, aka Moxie McGriff, a costume contest, green screen fun and more.

Lunch @ the Lounge – 2nd Wednesday Concert Series We kicked off a new music series that takes place in the Lounge at 303 North (just inside the Main Library) at noon every second Wednesday of the month. Musical guests provide a diverse range of performances—blues, classical, Celtic, country, folk, jazz and pop—with storytelling, social commentary and humor. Everyone is invited to attend, bring lunch, sit back, relax and enjoy the music.

Harlem of the South: Jazz Greats and More Spark Grant recipient Stage Aurora transported the audience to a different era through a live performance that captured the sounds and culture of the Harlem Renaissance. The show was based on the words, music, dance and songs of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, James Weldon Johnson and Cab Calloway— once musical legends of Ashley Street in Jacksonville.

Radical Jewish Culture: Concert and Collection Donation In honor of National Jewish American Heritage month, Uri Caine, Grammy-nominated pianist and composer, performed a concert, which coincided with the donation of a collection of CDs, anthologies of musicians’ writings, and DVDs valued at more than $4,000 to the library by Avant, a Jacksonville-based music events organization founded by local arts producer Keith Marks.

Dear Friends, The Foundation did something new in 2016, something we’ve never tried. It wasn’t hiring a new director, or launching four new campaigns, or our new website, or the increase in our fantastic donor base and income—though we did all that! Our focus for 2016 was aligning the Foundation with the library in significant new ways to ensure a healthy, cooperative organization. The Board of Library Trustees and Foundation Board of Directors worked together for many months in 2015 to devise a new set of strategic processes to ensure the success of the Foundation, support of the library, and integration of both entities. The plan set out a risky new vision, but by all accounts, from both internal and external stakeholders, the efforts have been a success. With these new processes in place starting in January 2016, the Foundation was poised for growth. We will continue to better the Foundation, align with the library, and work to win the trust and respect of the philanthropic community of Jacksonville. Every relationship we build gives potential donors the opportunity to be generous to support the good work of the public library. Join with us in 2017 as we help the library build not just collections, but our community. Sign up on our email list at www.JPLFoundation.org.

Respectfully, Ann Harwood-Nuss, M.D. Jamie Self, Ed.D. 2014 – 2016 Board Chair Development Director
