2023 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

Exceeding expectations

Imagine a baby so ill that he needs a new heart and a new kidney.

Imagine this child, just to survive the wait for those organs, needs a mechanical heart implanted in his tiny chest.

Now imagine the baby, only two months old, is smaller than anyone who has ever received that kind of artificial heart in our community.

In partnership with UHealth - University of Miami Health System, Jackson is changing lives in some of the most sophisticated and complex frontiers of modern medicine: fetal surgery for babies whose lives are in danger before they’re even born; spinal rehabilitation for trauma patients regaining their independence after others doubted they’d ever re-learn to walk; a liver transplant and open-heart surgery conducted simultaneously.

For too long, Jackson’s mission of caring for the people of Miami-Dade County regardless of their ability to pay created a false narrative that our hospitals were exclusively for poor people. The beauty of Jackson is that our hospitals are for all people.

With new and remodeled facilities from Doral to Cutler Bay, Jackson is proving that a system owned by its taxpayers and committed to academic medicine can also be the destination of choice for the most discerning of patients.

Fortunately for this baby and his family, they don’t have to imagine a solution. They only had to come to Jackson Health System. This one little miracle exemplifies so many of the services that make Jackson special, not just in South Florida, but across the country and around the world. Specialists from our Miami Transplant Institute, UHealth Jackson Children’s Care, and Jackson Heart Institute are working in harmony to provide him the best chance at long and healthy life – just as each of them does for hundreds of other patients each year.

We know how much it means when you trust us with your family’s care. We will never take that for granted, and we are always growing forward to exceed your expectations.

Sincerely,

1
“ This one little miracle exemplifies so many of the services that make Jackson special, not just in South Florida, but across the country and around the world. ”

The essence of our legacy is a 105-year-old promise to deliver a single standard of care for every Miami-Dade County resident. We held true to that pledge through every phase of the COVID-19 crisis, and even learned new ways of attacking disparities in both care and outcomes.

The light of our reputation is a tireless pursuit of medical advancement, extending life and reducing suffering across a wide range of illnesses and injuries. As researchers grapple with the long-term impacts of this virus, Jackson caregivers are blazing new trails. From complex lung transplant addressing extreme pulmonary damage to intensive behavioral health addressing the invisible scars of the pandemic, Jackson continues to rise.

But even as Jackson grows – in footprint and workforce, in science and in miracles – we remain grounded in this community. This is home to our more than 14,000 best-in-class nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. This is home to the patients who represent most of our nearly 500,000 annual visits.

In the years to come, Jackson will continue evolving to compete in a fast-changing industry and serve a fast-growing population. We will become smarter, faster, and stronger. And we will do what it takes to ensure these last 105 years are only the prologue: we have so much more to give. Thank you for being a part of this incredible history and exciting future.

Sincerely,

A community lifeline for 30 years

• Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial opened on August 3, 1992, and cemented its role as a critical community lifeline almost immediately when Hurricane Andrew devastated Miami-Dade County 21 days later. The reinforced rooftop helipad withstood the 20,000-pound Blackhawk helicopters used to transport patients to Ryder Trauma in the aftermath of Andrew.

• In 2001, Ryder Trauma became the U.S. Army’s only surgical training facility. Forward surgical teams come to train alongside Ryder Trauma’s renowned surgeons and nurses before being deployed to combat zones.

Grateful trauma patients share their stories.

• Researchers at the William Lehman Injury Research Center at Ryder Trauma study trends in motor vehicle accidents. Their work has led to protocols for treating crash victims nationwide.

• With an average of 5,500 patients a year, Ryder Trauma remains one of the busiest trauma centers in South Florida. In 2016, the Level II trauma center at Jackson South Medical Center opened, expanding Jackson’s reach on this lifesaving service to people in south Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys. It was formally renamed Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson South.

New look Same tradition of care

Recent expansions of Jackson’s services to every corner of the county transformed the community’s access to quality care. From Jackson West Medical Center in Doral to the network of UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers to Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial.

In 2022, expansion and modernization efforts focused mostly on Jackson Memorial Hospital, creating a welcoming environment and enhancing patient care.

UHealth Jackson Critical Care Pavilion features private intensive care suites to support transplant and neurosurgery. Jackson Memorial is the first Florida healthcare facility to introduce an innovative minimally invasive procedure to support patients in its intensive care units (ICU) in need of a feeding tube. The simple and quick procedure allows more healthcare workers, such as intermediate and critical care staff, to care for patients when the need for adequate nutrition is greatest.

The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial specializes in high-risk pregnancies and maternal care. It is the only academic medical center in South Florida providing expert high-risk pregnancy care and high-risk neonatal care under the same roof.

Holtz Children’s Hospital, one of the largest children’s hospitals in the southeastern United States, offers highly specialized medical expertise in a caring environment that embraces the philosophy of family-centered care.

Milestones and medical firsts Expertise gives patients new hope for the future

New era for lung transplantation and complex lung disease

The Lung Center at the Miami Transplant Institute (MTI), an affiliation between Jackson Health System and UHealth – University of Miami Health System, combines experience, expertise, and a multidisciplinary medical approach to treating adult and pediatric patients with complex lung diseases. The Lung Center – formed in March 2022 – is led by internationally renowned surgeon Tiago Machuca, MD, PhD, director of the Lung Center and a professor of clinical surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

In addition to lung transplants, the center provides treatment options for complex lung diseases, including robotic thoracic surgery, thoracic oncology, ECMO, post-COVID lung therapy, lung volume reduction for emphysema, and more.

“Patients with complex lung disease often times have very limited therapeutic options and poor functional capacity,” Dr. Machuca said. “The Lung Center at MTI focuses on providing these patients with a second chance to prolong both quantity and quality of life.”

Some of those complex cases are the result of COVID. Jackson Memorial Hospital has been recognized as a leader in providing care to some of the sickest patients affected by the pandemic, some of whom face long-term lung damage likely to necessitate a lung transplant.

Historic 500th intestinal transplant is a success

A transplant team led by Rodrigo Vianna, MD, PhD, director and chief of liver, intestinal, and multivisceral transplant at Miami Transplant Institute (MTI), performed an en-bloc transplantation of the liver, stomach, pancreas, and small and large bowel/colon, making history in the process.

Stephanie Jira’s surgery marked the 500th intestinal transplant at MTI. Diagnosed with a rare intestinal disorder as a teenager in 1997, Jira eventually found her way to Jackson from Arkansas as her health challenges continued to mount.

Expertise, compassion, and bright futures define NICU

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Holtz Children’s Hospital has among the highest survival rates in the country, thanks to its many advanced therapies and leading-edge research in the care of critically ill infants.

Jackson’s little miracles are cared for by multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals in a family-centered environment. This combination or expertise and compassion is priceless to parents.
