The Mississippi Film Office welcomes you to the 2013 Crossroads Film Festival. Whether you are here to watch the films or to watch your film, we’re glad you’re here and proud you put Crossroads on your calendar.

Society President’s Letter Dear Friends: Crossroads Film Festival… Everybody

As an original sponsor of the Festival, we are true believers in the power of film in our state and in our lives. While our everyday mission is to attract film production, our long term vision is to support and encourage all filmmakers. Through Crossroads, we are able to embrace both. Mississippi is a solid place to make a movie: beautiful locations, hospitable people, supportive communities, a Legislature that understands our mission, and a Governor who champions its progress. Our film incentive program includes a 25-30% cash rebate on your Mississippi spend, including resident and non-resident cast and crew payroll. Mississippi is an amazing place of inspiration and accomplishment. A Mississippian stands at every crossroads of American culture. Through words and notes and paint and film...Mississippians have always been storytellers. Blemished as it is by unforgivable moments, Mississippi has yielded an unmatchable heritage. The challenge and responsibility of this office, and the obligation we feel to you, is to continue this great heritage, and to create, nurture, and support every storyteller. For us filmmaking is more than economics. Every film creates opportunity, and the greatest opportunity comes in the explanation of a life, of a place, of a people. In the telling of our stories, real or imagined, we create understanding, discourse, and illumination. There is nothing better than what we do, as there is no boundary to what we can achieve.

has a story! Since 1999 we’ve worked to make the Crossroads Film Festival an amazing weekend of films, music, and fun. It’s our opportunity to

We will always encourage you, the filmmaker, with financial and educational opportunity. And we will continue to sustain you, the filmgoer, by supporting film festivals and filmmakers seeking the independent voice. We know that all lives are made richer by the stories we share. We hope you enjoy Crossroads.

share the Mississippi experience – Mississippi’s film story – with the world, and to bring the world’s stories home to you.

sponsors, contributing businesses, and organizations, the annual Festival is much more than simply an enjoyable weekend of films! It’s an event that nurtures Mississippi filmmakers and storytellers, presents children’s workshops, organizes film industry panels and discussions, hosts filmmakers from across the nation and the world to present and discuss their films, and provides the first steps for our native sons and daughters to tell Mississippi’s stories. We’ll see you at Malco Grandview Theatre in Madison for films, and at the Mississippi Museum of Art, Hal & Mal’s, circa, The Haute Pig, Duling Hall, and other venues around the greater Jackson area for our receptions, workshops, parties, and kid’s activities. Visit www.crossroadsfilmfestival. com for lots more information and to buy your passes and tickets early. See you at the movies! Greg Smith President of the Board Crossroads Film Society

Why Film in Mississippi? Recently expanded and improved, the Mississippi Motion Picture Incentive Program is now among the best in the United States. It specifically includes feature film, television, documentary, commercial, video game, and new technology production; and it qualifies production distributed essentially on screens of every shape and size. The incentive is a simple and direct cash rebate program of 25% on local spend, 25% on non-resident cast and crew payroll, and 30% on Mississippi resident cast and crew payroll. And we have added a 5% bonus rebate on the salaries of honorably discharged Veterans. We have a very low $50,000 minimum spend. There is a $10 million rebate limit per project, with a recently raised individual salary cap of $5 million and a $20 million annual rebate cap. For information about the Mississippi Incentive Program, call the Mississippi Film Office at 601.359.3297, or visit us online at www. filmMississippi.org.

She has been with Ramey since 2002, and her design work consistently wins awards. In her personal life, Nicole loves an opportunity to leave the computer behind with photography and collage, and occasionally shows in the Jackson area. Envisioned by former board member deborah Wright, this award is given to a film that has the ability to transform opinions, lives, and ultimately, history.

Herman’s Pick In honor of former festival director Herman Snell, we share a film that would certainly have been on his to-see list. Borrowed from the name of Herman’s weekly music column in the Jackson Free Press, “Herman’s Pick” is chosen based on elements he appreciated in movies: time travel or altered time, alternate realities, psychic powers, double meanings or ambiguity, and/or the ability for a film to be thought-provoking. In his words, “If a movie contains any of these elements, I’m going to like the movie on concept alone.”

Learn storytelling techniques and practices that can be applied to assist in telling a compelling story while managing an overwhelming mountain of footage. Alison Fast is a Peabody Awardwinning television producer who has worked for such networks as NBC/Universal, BBC Worldwide and MTV Networks.

Birth Story - Sunday, April 14, 2013 5:10 PM Malco, Screen B

As High as the Sky Block - Sunday, April 14, 5:25 PM Malco, Screen C

Sponsored by Mississippi Friends of Midwives

Cherry Waves Short Narrative (15 min.) / Dir. & Prod. Carey Williams / Santa Monica, CA / Drama, LGBT

Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives (MS Premiere) Showcase/Feature Documentary (93 min.) / Dir. Sara Lamm, Laurie Wigmore / Prod. Kate Roughan, Zachary Mortensen / Social Issues Counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her spirited friends began delivering each other’s babies in 1970, on a patch of rural Tennessee land. They taught themselves midwifery from the ground up, and, with their families, founded an entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm. As word of their social experiment spread, it created a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth - away from isolated hospital birthing rooms, where husbands were not allowed and mandatory forceps deliveries were the norm. Today, as nearly one third of all US babies are born via C-section, she fights to preserve her community’s hard-won knowledge. The film not only captures the unique sisterhood at The Farm Clinic, but shows childbirth the way most people have never seen it–unadorned, unabashed, and awe-inspiring.

But since being jilted by her fiancé, her obsessive-compulsive behaviors are in overdrive. The last thing she needs is family visitors. Showing up on her doorstep unannounced, Margaret’s nomadic older sister and her playful ten-year-old daughter jolt her out of her carefully regulated life, eventually revealing the long suppressed grief at the root of her fastidious behaviors.

Jackson MC, James Crow, is no newcomer to the art of rap. Penning his own verses since he was 16, Crow blends his blue collar rapping style with jazz, blues, & soul to craft a sound that while approachable, is all his very own. He has released two albums, The Black Codes and Religion Guns Money. The latter was released through Homework Town Records.

The Hons The Hons produce a perfect mix of touching, introspective music with light-hearted enthusiasm and optimism. Listeners are treated to the charm of Bates’ crooning while catching a glimpse into the ever-longing heart and mind of the New Orleans native. Sometimes poetic and sometimes tongue-incheek, The Hons truly have something for everyone to which they can relate. Whether it be the metaphor-laden, wanting desire displayed in tunes such as “If Wishing Made it So”, to the fleet-footed excitement of a schoolboy crush in “Hey Girl” to the clever punch-line of “It Wasn’t the Foot in My Mouth,” you can’t help but nod your head in agreement. Unassuming in appearance, The Hons only wish for their audience to enjoy themselves as much as they enjoy telling their stories on stage.

That Scoundrel That Scoundrel is a rock band hailing from Brandon, Mississippi that carries a simple message: rock n’ roll shouldn’t have pretense. Like all their favorite bands, they’re most interested in doing what they want, when they want, instead of worrying about any notions about what they’re supposed to do. Each member brings a different influence and dynamic resulting in an honest menagerie of punk, rock, and funk.
