Academic tradition governs the ceremony; your cooperation is requested in creating an occasion that will appropriately highlight our graduates’ achievements. Graduates and guests are asked to please remain in their seats until all of the graduates have gone across the stage. Awards 2018 Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award
Dr. Lewis “Keith” Yohn ‘53 Dr. Lewis “Keith” Yohn appreciates the support of the Jackson community in helping him become the professional he is today. He entered the Jackson Public School system in 1942 when his father moved the family from South Bend, Ind. for a new job in Jackson, Mich. In 1949, the family moved again to Bryan, Ohio. However, Yohn stayed in Jackson because he wanted to graduate with his classmates. He worked part-time for Loud & Jackson Dairy five nights a week, Saturdays and Sundays to support himself. After compressing the 10th, 11th and 12th grades into two years, he graduated summa cum laude from Jackson High in 1951. Lady luck was looking out for him when the Jackson Women’s City Club awarded him a two-year academic scholarship to attend Jackson Junior College. After earning his Associate in Science in 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving from 1953-55. After release from the Navy, Yohn continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Bowling Green State University in 1957, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Science in Complete Dental Prostheses in 1963 and 1968 respectively. He spent his career at the University of Michigan, beginning as a clinical instructor in 1963, promoted to assistant professor in 1968 and associate professor with tenure with 1975. He also operated a part-time private practice for a number of years in Ann Arbor. Professor Yohn loved teaching students how to make false teeth, partial dentures, porcelain crowns and more. He had high standards and values. He expected superior performance and demanded the students think for themselves. His area of research study was the human jaw, specifically the movement of the lower jaw during chewing. His research has helped generations of dental students. The Journal of the American Dental Association published an article on his research in June 2016. For his lifetime of service, we are pleased to honor Dr. Lewis “Keith” Yohn the 2018 Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award.

2018 Jackson College Distinguished Service Award
Kirk Mercer Jackson College recognizes Kirk Mercer with the 2018 Distinguished Service Award! Mercer is the owner and chief executive officer of R.W. Mercer Co., founded by his father in 1961. A Jackson College alumnus, he oversees the multi-state firm, which has seven branches primarily serving Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, and has grown from five employees to more than 170 employees today in three divisions – petroleum, general contracting and agriculture. Mercer has been active both professionally and in the community. He served on the national board of the Petroleum Equipment Institute and ended his term as president of the organization. He has also served on the Michigan Petroleum Association Board, Jackson Enterprise Group Board, and as a corporate ambassador of Michigan International Speedway. He has served as a past member of the Hanover-Horton Board of Education, and is a current member of the Liberty Township Planning Commission. He was also co-chair of the Cascades Humane Society, secretary of the Mason State Bank Board and board president of the Country Club of Jackson. Kirk currently serves on the Executive Leadership Team of the American Heart Association. Mr. Mercer resides in Jackson with his wife, Marty, an attorney, and owner of Embellishments Gallerie Design Studio. They have three children, Nikki Johnson, Andy Mercer and Jaimie Mercer. In his free time, Kirk’s interests include golf, motorcycling and antique cars.

Academic Dress One of the colorful aspects of a college commencement ceremony is the array of color in the academic dress. These colors have a significance deeply rooted in the tradition of academic life.
The associate and bachelor’s gowns have pointed sleeves, and are worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and the front part has an arc cutaway. The gown may be worn open or closed. The specialist’s degree gown has sky-blue velvet down the front but no velvet bars on the sleeves. The doctorate’s gown, with bell-shaped sleeves, may be worn open or closed. It has black velvet down the front with three bars of velvet across the sleeves. The tassels of the doctorate’s cap are usually gold. The different colors of velvet bars represent the subject to which the degree pertains. As early as the 1100s, gowns and hoods were worn by men and women as everyday clothing in Europe. Academic dress began as the original attire of the clergy in the fourteenth century and has more recently been retained as an academic symbol for the faculty of graduating students. The gown was worn originally for warmth in the drafty unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. Today, the type of academic degree (i.e. bachelor, master or doctorate) earned by the wearer is identified by cut and style of the gown. Originally the hood was a garment for covering the head or served as a shoulder cape and sometimes a bag for alms or other personal belongings. In commencement exercises today, the shape and size of the hood mark the college degree of the wearer. The color of the hood lining officially represents the institution that granted the highest degree. Explanation of Degrees
Honor Cords
The Bachelor of Applied Science is an undergraduate degree in a discipline that applies knowledge to more specific, practical applications. It is found in majors such as engineering or culinary arts, and is designed to lead to immediate work in the field.
Graduates are recognized for achievement with honor cords worn over their graduation gown.
The Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree is focused on a particular subject matter, with fewer liberal arts courses. Students concentrate on their academic subject to master technical and practical facets of their field. It is usually offered in technical and scientific areas like computer science or energy systems. The Associate in Arts is earned primarily by students intending to transfer to a college or university and complete a four-year degree in any one of several major areas such as business administration, education or psychology. The Associate in Science is earned by students intending to transfer and major in fields such as pharmacy, engineering, pre-medicine and biology. The Associate in Applied Science is recommended for students who plan to enter an occupation upon graduation or who desire to transfer to specialized applied, business, or technical programs at four-year colleges. The Associate in General Studies comprises a core of general education with additional coursework selected to meet the student’s needs and interests. Certificates of completion are granted to students who have earned at least 30 semester hours of credit in an organized program of study.
Honor cords consist of twisted cords with tassels on either end. • Gold cords represent high academic honors, for students whose overall GPA is 3.80 to 4.0. • Silver cords represent academic honors, for students whose overall GPA is 3.50 to 3.79. • White cords represent academic honors, for students whose overall GPA is 3.00 to 3.49. • Red, white and blue cords recognize veteran students.
Academic Stoles Academic stoles are vestments that may indicate achievement or also denote membership in a society or organization. Graduates wear these over their graduation gown. • American Honors stoles recognize graduating students who have participated in the American Honors program here at Jackson College. These stoles are white with gold stitching. • Jackson Preparatory and Early College (JPEC) stoles recognize graduating students who have participated in the JPEC program. These stoles are gold with maroon stitching. • Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society stoles recognize graduating students who have participated in the PTK program at Jackson College. These stoles are gold stitched with PTK lettering. • TRIO Student Support Services recognize graduating students who have participated in the TRIO program here at Jackson College. These stoles are white stitched with TRIO lettering.
