ILMINSTER LIONS 2015 SUMMER FETE Welcome to our 2015 Summer Fete, I hope you have an enjoyable day with us. We are again indebted to Swanmead School for use of their facilities and the local business community for their continued support. This year it is our 30th Anniversary of staging the show, which raises funds for local good causes. It’s estimated that over £100k has been raised by the club over that period. A significant number of charities have stalls in their own right to fund raise. It would be very difficult to put an overall figure on how much has been raised in total, but clearly it would not have been possible without the very generous support of the people of Ilminster and the surrounding area, we are extremely grateful. We have recently been fund raising for a paediatric pod (for tiny babies ) to be installed in the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, which was handed over in April. Our current project is to purchase a piece of kit for the Beacon Cancer Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital, and the money raised today will go towards that cause. -

Some of you will remember me from my time as a local reporter, attending the Lions Club annual events, among many others. I spent the eight months since last July fighting back to health after a sudden unexpected trip to A&E for life saving surgery, followed by a second surgery at Christmas. With so much free time to think during my recovery, I have reflected a great deal on the last eight years when I started my job and the many things I have been grateful for. To be a good journalist, you spend a lot of time observing people and the key thing I noticed was that without volunteer organisations like the Lions, Rotary, Carnival clubs, Scouts and Guides, Cadets, WI and countless other groups, many local events which punctuate the calendar for families to enjoy and introduce children to their wider community, would simply not happen. Yet the problem universal to all these clubs, is that they are dwindling in number. I witnessed some long standing clubs, like the Crewkerne Round Table and Winsham WI, having to fold due to lack of committees and many others are struggling to get members. It seems people are just too busy elsewhere, or is it just that the post war sense of ‘mucking in’ has finally worn off? I know we can still be a driving force in a crisis, look at what happened when the levels flooded, so why do we shrink back into the shadows? Perhaps it is a lack of confidence, I interviewed many people who said that coming forward to volunteer, changed their lives, making them more confident and finding new friends. The Ilminster Lions Christmas fair in South Petherton was one of the first events I attended when I was new to the job and quite scared at the prospect of introducing myself at a time when the attitude to reporters was quite hostile. Their friendly manner soon put me at ease. After a few months of proving myself to those who were wary of how I would represent them, I felt welcomed into the communities of the area I covered; Ilminster, Chard and Crewkerne (my home town) and the villages surrounding them. It was a busy job but a real joy to be a part of so many great things happening locally and hopefully highlighting a little more of what goes on behind the scenes, to a wider audience. As a local person myself, it really opened my eyes to what goes on to make this area a place where everyone seems to want to move to. So I appeal to you, if you can find time to volunteer for any of these worthy organisations which put so much back into enriching your lives, please do. Have a great summer and best wishes to all who know me.

Meet Peter Wheeler Newest Member of Ilminster Lions Club I was born in Yeovil and lived for many years in Burnham on Sea. As a young man I was a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy and remained connected with the sea all my life. I eventually joined H.M. Coastguard in the Clyde and was later posted to the Great Yarmouth Operations Centre as a Search Mission Controller, where I remained until I retired two years ago. At that point my wife and I moved back to Somerset to be closer to friends and family and with a determination to be part of our local community. I was therefore delighted to be asked by our new neighbour Geoff Geater, if I would like to join the Ilminster Lions. I have found them all to be extremely welcoming and friendly but also dedicated to the work done by the Lions. Many of the Ilminster team have been Lions for decades, helping a host of people and organisations wherever possible. We raise money, most of which is spent on local projects and charitable works, but we also provide manpower for practical purposes such as marshalling a school cross country run or ferrying senior citizens to a Christmas lunch. I have acquired a wide circle of new friends and I am putting something back into the community, it is without doubt the best move I could have made.

We always need new members, men or women, so if you feel you could contribute please contact our Membership Secretary Dave Case on 0845 8339936 or email enquiries@ilminsterlionsclub.co.uk, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Business Memos The following were found on e-mails and notice boards in offices "As of tomorrow, employees will only be able to access the building using individual security cards. Pictures will be taken next Wednesday, and employees will receive their cards in two weeks." "What I need is an exact list of specific unknown problems we might encounter." "This project is so important we can't let things that are more important interfere with it." "Doing it right is no excuse for not meeting the schedule." "No one will believe you solved this problem in one day! We've been working on it for months. Now go act busy for a few weeks and I'll let you know when it's time to tell them." Quote from the Boss: "Teamwork is a lot of people doing what I say." "We know that communication is a problem, but the company is not going to discuss it with the employees."

A Tasty treat from Santa’s Food Workshop (pg.26) Tried, tested and loved by Lion and Wife

Beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy, then beat in the eggs, almonds and almond extract (or Amaretto). Spoon the mixture evenly over the chocolate covered pears. LIONS CLUB of ILMINSTER & DISTRICT SOMERSET Established 1976

The Ilminster Lions Club has a long standing relationship with The Beacon Centre at Musgrove Hospital, Taunton. In recent times one of our members has benefited from being successfully treated at the Beacon Centre. Whilst he said the surroundings and staff were marvellous, it was thought some enhancements could be made to improve the comfort and experience of patients waiting for treatment. 0

With the co-operation of the Beacon Centre’s radiotherapy services manager and professional head of department, it was decided that improvements to the changing cubicles and information system were necessary. This was completed and the Lions were pleased to present a cheque for £3,500. In more recent times the Beacon Centre has benefitted from being chosen as one of the beneficiaries of our annual Giant Easter Egg raffles. The Lions Club would like to thank the many local businesses and very generous individuals who regularly support our fund.
