We are privileged to be able to build on and extend a business and architectural culture that has grown over many years. But maintaining this culture can only succeed if we are uncompromising in seeing ourselves as generalists as we have done in the past. Organisation, consultancy, design, planning and construction management must, therefore, always intermesh. At IttenBrechbühl, it all comes from a single source – in fact, exactly as with a classic architect. In the process, we are able to rely on an experienced team of around 300 employees working on tailored solutions within a consistent business model in offices in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, St. Gallen, Zurich, Berlin and Greifswald. The lone warrior principle is not our thing; with us there is no need to invent the same thing twice, and mistakes should not be repeated. We make sure that this is the case through a system of continuous knowledge transfer. Regular training forms the main component of this transfer, for example, in project management, CAD seminars, workshops on construction management or project presentations as well as internal design, staff and marketing newsletters. Tasks are always analysed in groups and, in the process, knowledge is constantly passed on. In this way we guarantee continuity and innovation at the same time. One important concern for us is to work as the local contact architects with international design architects – e.g. with Shigeru Ban for Tamedia in Zurich or the new Swatch building in Biel. We do not set our priorities by their media impact as architecture is not an end in itself in our understanding of ourselves. But that does not mean that we do not always strive to achieve the

The things we are responsible for are not intended to be fashionable but to have lasting value. It is always our aim to take care of the details for small planning jobs just as much as for major projects. A door handle is not just a door handle; a colour tone must be just as carefully selected as the façade, the technical infrastructure or the integration of urban planning considerations. We can do a lot, but we cannot do everything. That is why as general planners, we always pull in those experts whose technical expertise can lend us support. Only if architects enter into alliances and activate their networks can they remain as the sole contacts for contractors. Finding out the best way to word with developers, other architects or technical planners is one of our strengths. We bring in specialists on a project-specific basis; therefore, because the requirements are constantly changing, a new analysis is needed for each project. For example, sustainability standards and strategies are changing rapidly and on a continuous basis, and technical possibilities with them. In this context, we are also thinking of the challenge, for example, that communicating buildings will pose in the future.

L’espace intérieur s’ouvre sur un grand hall, haut et clair, dont le volume couvre plusieurs étages. La construction raffinée en filigrane est apparente et parle la langue claire de la technique actuelle. Ce hall invite à flâner, à faire des courses – ou tout simplement à profiter de la vue qui promet le vaste monde. /// Le terminal de chemin de fer séduit lui aussi par sa ges-

tion de la lumière, fruit d’une mûre réflexion, et qui joue un rôle majeur sur le plan de l’architecture et de la signalétique. L’élément central en est la grande coupole qui laisse largement pénétrer la lumière vers le bas, tout en donnant un ordre à la structure complexe et en créant des repères. Cette construction nouvelle avait pour but de s’intégrer dans les parties existantes et de s’immiscer entre elles. Voilà d’ailleurs pourquoi, depuis l’extérieur, on ne pressent ni ne voit rien de la richesse de cette vie intérieure – la surprise et l’apaisement des visiteurs lorsqu’ils entrent n’en sont que plus grands. At the heart of the airport

Mission accomplished: in the labyrinth of Zurich-Kloten Airport, built in various stages over the years, two new buildings bring structural clarity and a marked improvement in the efficiency of this huge operation. For passengers, this means greater comfort and transparency. /// The two new buildings, constructed while the airport was in operation, are the Airside Center, designed as a reception hall and concourse, and the new railway terminal, which forms the interface between the air, rail and private transport. Both buildings were part of the airport’s ambitious fifth expansion phase. /// The Airside Center is the heart of the airport in terms of urban planning

as well as operations. Much like a wing, it stretches in a large, light sweep between Terminals A and B. With its huge glass front, the façade overlooking the apron is designed as a true display window and a reception area for travellers as they arrive. The interior space opens onto a wide, high and bright hall with several storeys. The delicate and refined construction is visible and speaks the clear language of today’s technology. This hall is a place to stroll, shop – or simply enjoy the view of the wide world beyond. /// The railway terminal also makes sophisticated use of light, which plays a major part in the architecture and signage. The key element here is the large dome that not only allows the light to penetrate deep into the building below, but also brings order to the complex structure and aids orientation. This new building had to be integrated into and between existing structures. That also explains why there is no way to see or anticipate this rich inner life from the outside – which only heightens the surprise and relief that visitors feel when they enter. La gestion des CFF est assurée aujourd’hui à partir d’une centaine de sites régionaux qui, dans les années à venir, seront réunis en quatre centres d’exploitation, dont un situé à la gare d’Olten. Important nœud ferroviaire du réseau suisse, il a aussi une valeur historique, que rappelle sa plaque arborant le kilomètre 0. Le nouvel édifice représente le premier volet de la reconversion du site des ateliers industriels d’Olten. Bâtiment emblématique, il s’intègre dans cet environnement au passé riche.

State-of-the-art railway control centre

Over the next few years, SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) will consolidate their over 100 traffic control centres into four operations centres. One will be located on the grounds of the historically significant Olten Railway Station. The station marks kilometer 0 of the Swiss railway system. Olten continues to be a central railway hub to this day. The new building is the first element in the transformation of the Olten industrial site. The striking new building will be integrated into the historic environment and set a new, somewhat self-assured accent. /// Starting in 2016, all railway traffic between Basel, Bern,

Brugg and Lucerne will be controlled out of the Mitte Operations Centre. The major access routes to the Gotthard and Lötschberg NEAT lines are also part of this system. Previously spatially separated work processes will be joined together in the future: in the operating centre, dispatchers and rail traffic controllers will work together in regional teams. They are responsible for dispatching, setting signals and switches, and keeping passengers in railway stations informed. This will facilitate cooperation, communication and coordination, especially in the event of a breakdown. /// The building is a prototype developed through close interaction with the client.

The building structure is substantially derived from the specific function, required space and intended use of each room.
