Surprising new talent @ ITs Festival Amsterdam 2011 From Thursday 23 June - Friday 1 July 2011 Amsterdam’s city centre will once again be brimming over with young talent. The participants in ITs, the International Theatre School Festival Amsterdam, will be taking hold of the theatres. Young graduating performing artists from the Netherlands and abroad will be presenting themselves to a broad audience, consisting of fans of the theatre, casting agencies, programmers and the press. The ITs Festival Amsterdam is the stepping stone to a professional career for these young stage beasts. Practically every genre within the performing arts will be represented: drama, mime, dance, music theatre etc. With over 50 unique productions, and a varied fringe programme of after talks, workshops, debates, lectures and dazzling afterparties, ITs Festival Amsterdam is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe. ITs Festival Amsterdam draws around 10.000 visitors each year.

I represented the Netherlands at the Neu/Now Festival in Nantes 2010 in which a small group of the most exciting graduating talents of Europe were brought together. I now feel I have the support of a unique group of international artists making their way in the field with me. I can’t wait. William Collins, ITs participant 2010, graduated SNDO, de theaterschool, Amsterdam, Winner ITs Choreography Award 2010

Follow ITs also on

Brace yourselves The twenty-second edition of ITs Festival Amsterdam takes place on the eve of some of the most drastic changes in the establishment of the Dutch theatre. Changes that will no doubt draw heavily on the future of this festival, the biggest European festival for young performing artists. Artists who have completed their education, and who are bursting with creative energy and ready to go. The canon of theatre classics contains a great number of plays in which the established generation, feeling the pressure of changing political and social circumstances, refuses to make way for an up-and-coming generation and hangs on to its achievements like grim death: Aeschylus’s Oresteia, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Checkov’s Seagull, Schnitzler’s Lonely Way. Plays that demonstrate how in every new age the established order will frustrate a young generation’s dreams of the future and deny it access to resources and power. In each of the plays mentioned above the young protagonists then face the choice:

2

either kill their father/mother or commit suicide. They all choose death in the end. Because the older generation, not exactly stupid, is the cleverer, the more cunning, is better able to manipulate events; and so, at the end of each play the stage is littered with foiled ambitions and frustrated dreams of the fu ture. For the older generation there is nothing left but to stand by, blubbering as the future is carried to the grave, and wait for their own demise. Finita la comedia! The curtain drops. Now that we find ourselves confronted once again with political and social changes, spurred on by a financial crisis, this intergenerational tension becomes tangible again, in the performing arts as well. As early on as during the preliminary proposals for these cuts, the generation currently in power has shown that it is the cleverer and the more cunning, and has managed to control the debate on all levels of government. After all, the proposed cuts in art education and in the production houses and the ‘theaterwerkplaatsen’ [i.e. the theatres that focus on coaching, research and experiment] serve a deathly blow to upand-coming talent, and in this sense, to the future of the Dutch performing arts. Talented

young artists will be denied education and training, and should they survive, they will then be denied access to a professional career as well. On the other hand, the powers that be have seen to it that their preliminary proposals contain a consolidation of the artistic and financial interests of the key institutions, i.e. the establishment. All of this means that the next generation of performing artists must brace itself. All the more reason for ITs, which operates on the threshold between education and a professional career, to work even harder at helping our talented young artists on their way. ITs is going to use all of its resources and power to offer talented young artists the stage they deserve. Preferably the European stages, now that the load seems to be distributed so unequally in our own country. ITs is not going to settle for foiled ambitions and frustrated dreams of the future. ITs will not stand by, blubbering as the future is carried to its grave! I wish you all a glowing and hopeful ITs 2011! Theu Boermans, Artistic Director ITs Festival Amsterdam

How do the camera man, the editor and the sound man on a film set view the work of the actors, and what kind of impact do they have on their acting? And how can they help each other create a beautiful film? In this ACT Clinic we give the floor to the specialists, who will talk about their profession and ours from their own perspective. After all, good acting is not enough to make a great movie. With the help of their favourite good and bad movie scenes a director, an editor, a cameraman/woman, a floor manager, a lighting director and a sound recordist will show us each discipline’s contribution in the making of a movie. This clinic will offer you an opportunity to ask all those questions you never get around to asking while you are on the set.

International Programmers Lunch

In order to encourage young talent moving on to stages, ITs yearly invites (inter)national theatre and dance programmers. They will visit the festival, meet the talented young graduates, and book the best of the best for their own festivals. Last year, this resulted in about 70 ITs performances being programmed at other Dutch stages and stages in for example Italy, Spain, Serbia, Iran and Turkey. Especially for this purpose ITs will be organising a second International Programmers Lunch. Applications, by professionals only, through Jasminka Beganovic, jbeganovic@ itsfestivalamsterdam.com

International young Makers’ exchange The International Young Makers’ Exchange (IYME) sends young theatre makers out into the world. IYME is a collaboration between nine European theatre festivals that are keen to allow young talents and their performances to tour. Now you are performing at ITs, and the next thing you know, you might be on a stage in Bilbao, Paris, Kosovo, or Rome. In this way many talented young artists have already benefited from a unique experience at the start of their careers and built an international network. IYME will receive support from the European Union at least until 2013, so we are able to offer many more performances such an international tour. Would you like to take your show on tour? Apply with Janneke Robers, jrobers@itsfestivalamsterdam.com or check out www.iyme.eu for further info. Of course you can also see international performances by these young artists at ITs! They can be recognised by the IYME logo.

Plukt ons!

Enclosed in every beginning lies an ending; every ending holds a beginning. We inhale, and are doomed to exhale. For these graduates, Plukt ons! (Pick Us!) is a rite of passage in which life and drama fertilise each other. They perform their act; an elegant movement, a melodious intonation. They curse, they cry, they grin, they sing. They are passed in review. The stage is a garden, they are the cherries.

‘Our lads’ have returned from Afghanistan and are telling their stories. “We need stories to convince ourselves of the fact that the person we were a year ago and the person we are today are one and the same; to remind us that there is a connection between the person we were in Afghanistan and the person we are in the Netherlands.” from Kamermeisjes & soldaten (Chambermaids & Soldiers) by Arnon Grunberg. The four are protesting. Against art funding and defence. Against cuts in education, AIDS research and social services. They live in New York and they are amazed to see that, in spite of their left-wing ideals, the Third World is still being exploited. And so they are protesting, against everything and everyone, soothing their conscience. Until a murder thoroughly puts their morals to the test. Dutch and German students join forces in this performance packed with paradoxes.

If there is anything that binds us people, it is our need to get together. We dance and we drink. We celebrate life and death, always and every where. But what is a party and why do we leave the house to go to one? Because it is important to celebrate life? To fight off boredom? To not be alone? Plunge yourself into the night and celebrate with us.

The Teylers Museum in Haarlem is full of books. Books about major discoveries, faraway expeditions, and revolutionary inventions. The institute was founded during the Enlightenment and abounds with knowledge, positive science and democracy. Two students have turned the book titles into a drama text, into poetry. Funny, fascinating, moving, and absurd is the bridge they build between the optimistic ideologies of the past, and the here-and-now of the theatre.

What is the perfect way to sit down, fall down, get up? Look at the man. Look, and see how he is at it. Busy making a life in this world. What is this man thinking? What is he thinking of? Happiness, love, death? There he is, we see him moving. Why is he moving the way he does? What moves him? Among the old set pieces belonging to Bambie these fourth year students set out to explore the mystery that is man. Geluk, liefde, dood? Daar is hij, we zien hem bewegen. Waarom beweegt hij zo? Wat beweegt hem? “None of us can do anything about the things that change us.” Seven twenty-somethings get together. They want to be with each other, but they live in separate worlds. A world of achievements and ambition pitted against a world of nice people who surround themselves with friends, sports, and art. In the one world everyone is talented, but honesty loses out to ambition. In the other world, beefcakes secretly play with toy trains and sensual ladies sing children’s songs.

The curtain falls, the stage is empty. All it needs now is a clean-up. For her graduation performance Laura de Vries has created the character Najomie. A cleaning woman whose heart-warming monologue will take you along into a hidden world. Her world. A world quivering with life. Taking a good few poetic detours, Najomie is a performance that tiptoes towards its goal and will have you listen with bated breath. Conceived, written and performed by:

There are more speechwriters working at the White House than policy makers. What does this mean? And what does it mean that we are living in a world where reality is overshadowed by the media? In 2007 Rebekka de Wit made a reality report on her journey to Madagascar. Her experiences prompted so many questions that she decided to devote three monologues to them. These have now been merged to form one funny and moving piece about the mediatisation of our world.

The students from Amsterdam and Arnhem prove that there are plenty of creative people in the Dutch performing arts schools. Two of them have set to work themselves and will be showing their own perspectives, forms and fascinations at ITs. At this time the performances had not yet been made known, but be prepared for a serious dose of singularity! The lonely Venitsjka is on a train travelling from Moscow to Petushki to meet his red-haired girlfriend there. Before this he roamed across Moscow, back to front, both sober and heavily under the influence. We follow him not only on his train journey, but on his inner trip as well. This is where he keeps his plea for insecurity and against the enthusiasts, the acts of glory and unflinching willpower.

“I am not hurt. Not damaged.” A woman locks herself in her bath room. It is a way to try and escape her inescapable fate. Bloedbad (Bloodbath) was based on Om te beginnen een vrouw (In the beginning there was a woman) by Anne Vegter, a play about Noah’s fictional daughter. Eleni Achilleos has moulded the text into a discomforting performance that confronts us with fear, sex, abuse, and death. The multi-talented Nina Willems is graduating from the Theatrical Performance programme this year with her intimate solo Schuw. Schuw (Shy) captures the fear, the rage, the despair, and the silence. But also… love. Schuw is an appeal, a cry from the heart, to fear nothing. Not even NOTHINGNESS itself.

An individual, lost in the world, is letting her imagination run free. She creates a cosmos filled with bizarre characters and unusual machines. The stage is peopled, for instance, by things such as the boat head and the torso suit. Her own rules and made-up rituals offer her life a structure that she desperately clings to. On the dividing line between visual art and drama Käppkkra tells the story of the little fears.

In 1984, twenty people who were facing death (either because of a death penalty or because of terminal cancer) were asked if they were happy with the life they had lived. They all answered: ‘no’. One man watches too many movies, completely secluding himself, and creates a new character: Bobby Baxter! His answer when asked if he is happy with his life is ‘no’ as well. But he does not see this as anything negative.

She does not look in the mirror and when she washes she does not think. A purely functional act. Marie-José suffers from anorexia. I interviewed her, but show myself, a former anorexia patient. Perhaps it would be best if we sit down. Let’s sweep everything under the carpet and not worry about the reasons why we have gathered here. Let’s just focus on being strong for each other, even though everything here reminds you of the moment when nothing is the same anymore. Emotions are buried, but right beneath the surface, the beast is hiding.

Tucké Royale is neither a man, nor a woman. She is a pseudo-creature. She is an interpretation. Every emotion, every form of identification is faked and will be nipped in the bud. Costumes are nothing but a masquerade; words are contradictory. They are part of an endless process of constant transformations. I am not here, I do not exist. But try to find me!

Gaan If there is no point to our existence, then why don’t we kill ourselves immediately? A fatal ending awaits us all and we can be seized by a sudden realisation of our own mortality. Our minds are capable of exploring the limits of death in every detail, but our bodies shrink from destruction. A performance about the absurdity of life, melancholy, and hope. Every day, somewhere in the universe, a dense star reaches the end of its life. It can no longer support its own weight and implodes. The thing that remains is a place where gravity is so enormous that not even light is able to escape from it. It is the birth of a black hole. Black holes distort all our intuitive notions of space and time, and this is what makes them so fascinating. They are improbable enigmas. Happy Days

Toneelacademie Maastricht, Regie Opleiding, fourth year, Maastricht, the Netherlands

De Theaterschool, Regie Opleiding, fourth year, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

“I am scared, but not of their cries or orders - I scare myself.” Medea lives on the fringes of society. Hunted down, beaten, despised, and betrayed by her great love Jason, who has run off to marry someone else. But Medea does not run; she prepares for a showdown. Which will have far-reaching consequences. Amid the rubble of the Second World War Anouilh wrote his version of Medea, which deals with the responsibilities of society and of the individual.

In an indistinct and oppressive space Winnie is chattering away. She talks, and talks, and talks, hoping that Willie will hear her: “Oh no doubt you are dead, like the others, no doubt you have died, or gone away and left me, like the others, it doesn’t matter, you are there.” A terrifying and desperate monologue in a piece that is as enigmatic as it is spellbinding.

Instead, I would like to enjoy the remaining period of the Kunstenplan, celebrating what we have now, celebrating the next generation of performing artists. Besides, the value of dance cannot be explained by any currency - it has its own intrinsic value. In the words of Roger Scruton, in fact a conservative philosopher:

June 27 , Frascati 1, 20.30

“Beauty can be consoling, disturbing, sacred, profane. It can be exhilarating, appealing, inspiring, chilling. It can affect us in an unlimited variety of ways, yet it is never viewed with indifference: beauty demands to be noticed.” For ‘beauty’ read ‘dance’. Of course, it is almost impossible not to be concerned with the impending changes. Things cannot go on as usual and changes will have to be made. If there is less money to spend, we will have to make clever, more disciplined choices without sacrificing standards. Fortunately there is an appreciative audience out there and I am grateful to live in a country where Art is still seen as a fundamental and necessary part of life.”

The Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD) represents experimental dance; the Dance Academy in Tilburg represents craftsmanship and creativity. The two have joined forces for this year’s festival and will be sharing the stage. Their collaboration has resulted in a varied programme containing jazz, urban dance, modern dance theatre and experimental dance, all taking the students’ individual life experiences as a starting point. A better synergy would be hard to imagine!

Mixed Emotions has been a highly successful formula for many years, and the fourth edition equally guarantees a varied programme of dance and live music. Three contemporary choreographers will be coupled with three composers, to work in twos on creating brand new work with the ArtEZ dance students. The composers, choreographers and students will push each other to great heights so that the audience can just sit back and enjoy an exciting dance show.

Sun Wukong, an important character from Chinese mythology, developed from a mortal to King of the Apes, to an arrogant and powerful demon, to ultimately receive the status of a Buddha. This great figure sneaks up on boys in their sleep and makes them dream of power and courage. They revere him. But when one of them steps into his shoes and reveals himself to be a new hero, it turns out that grief and lones in uate liness are always just around the Grad corner.

The fourth-year students from the Modern Theatre Dance programme are as full of idiosyncrasies as their choreographer Ann Van den Broek. It promises to be a great night! With only a minimum of tools and a strong use of rhythm and repetition, Van den Broek is able to touch the core of an emotion. Come and see the students star in this choreography that has been created especially for them. They could have had no better preparation for their professional careers.

ITs, in collaboration with Operatie Muziektheater (a cooperation of TIN, FPK and MCN) and De Theaterschool, is organising a debate on the future of European music theatre students. Musicals and innovative music theatre are the fastest-growing genres within the performing arts. They are accessible and well-loved because of their mix of different disciplines, which gives them a huge potential audience as well as the opportunity to be economically viable. But the domain of musicals and music theatre performances is also broad and highly varied. Each category has its own content material, its own artistic and professional qualifications and accompanying forms of education. But there is a great discrepancy both among the different schools and between the schools and the professional field of subsidisers, presenters and journalists. ITs is triggering the debate with participants such as Marc van Warmerdam (Orkater), Ruut Weissman (artistic director of the Amsterdam Toneelschool&Kleinkunstacademie) and Robin de Levita (music theatre producer) to find out how these discrepancies affect the music theatre student’s career options, how the European field is actually developing, and whether there are any chances of finding new opportunities in the

vacuum between the musical and the innovative music theatre performance.

musicre theat

Talent On The Move 2011 Natuurlijk ook op het ITs Festival! Of course at the ITs Festival as well!

After graduating at ITs with Bos Vermist I went on to perform at festivals for young artists. And so the woods went missing in Maastricht, Utrecht and Groningen. The encounters I had with other young artists were an inspiration; in the end, we are all in the same boat. How wonderful that there is a place for us to start rowing. Crowdfunding: new ways of attracting money Help ITs Festival Amsterdam to fulfill her mission! The Dutch cultural field is facing uncertain times, as the Dutch government has announced big cuts in the budget for culture and education. Hence we are forced to find new possibilities for the funding of our festival. With Crowdfunding we would like to appeal to our followers, and through an online platform we would like to make it even easier to respond to this appeal. You can make an online donation via the website www.crowdfundingfacilitities.com With your help we can offer young graduates in the performing arts a stage to present themselves to public, programmers and press. This is of huge importance for them to start their professional career, especially in current circumstances. We hope you are willing to help, thanks a lot on behalf of the ITs team and all the students!

Help ITs Festival Amsterdam haar missie te vervullen!

Our mission at ITs Festival Amsterdam is to bridge the gap between art education and a professional career. Since 1987 it has been the place where hundreds of young theatre makers and talented young dancers, both from the Netherlands and abroad, have presented themselves to the public, to presenters, and the press. We also offer an extensive fringe programme each year consisting of debates, lectures, workshops, talks and more. With this package, ITs offers young artists inspiration, valuable contacts, and quite often, a first concrete step towards employment.
