Q

A &

Q- We just got engaged now what do we do first? A- Share the good news! If either of you have children they should be told before anyone else. After the children are told, your parents should get priority. Then tell your relatives and close friends. Last, but not necessarily least, tell your colleagues and coworkers.

Q- Who suppose to host our engagement party and who should get invited? A-Traditionally, the brides parent(s) would host the engagement party, but the grooms parent(s), family, and/or close friend(s) can also host your engagement party. Depending on your budget and location, you can invite as many or as few guests as you want. Do not invite someone to the engagement party that you are not inviting to your wedding.

f you are a punk bride, goth bride, or just a bride that wants to be edgy and different, then Rock N’ Roll Bride is an absolute must to follow. Kat started this awesome blog while planning her own wedding in October 2007 (her wedding was in April 2008!). “I had loved reading all the American wedding blogs throughout my planning and wanted to have a bash at doing one myself.”

While Kat was planning her wedding, she saw there were no resources or inspirations for brides who wanted to be different. “Although I loved reading the American blogs and ALL the wedding magazines, I didn’t ever find one that really spoke to me and shared the stuff I loved... Then, after we were married I decided to carry on with the blogging and morphed my site into a place for all things alternative, unique and Rock n Roll in the wedding world, with a specific focus on real weddings, as these were always my favourite kinds of wedding inspiration - seeing how real people planned their real weddings.” Kat never imagined her blog would become a business and that she would meet so many great people and find life long friends. Her blog is defiantly changing the way we look at weddings and letting people know, it’s ok to be different and unique. my way!”

“The UK wedding industry has changed enormously over the past 3 years and it’s been a very exciting thing to be a part of.” Kat likes to take things as they come, but she does has plans to expand and start some new and exciting projects this year! ” I’m one of those ‘live in the moment’ kind of girls!” “I’m just going to roll with the punches and see what comes.” Made U Look Photography

o you love looking at real weddings, unique ideas, inspirational boards, and great Etsy finds? Then you’ll love Glamour and Grace! Megan started this blog in February 2010, after planning her own wedding. “After planning my own wedding I couldn’t stop looking at wedding magazines and blogs. I have always loved weddings and looking can remember bonding with my sister while reading Brides when we were young.” Not only does Megan enjoy sharing real weddings, but sharing ideas that are not cookie cutter, what’s popular now, and inspiration boards. She also loves to feature Etsy and great photography. “Also, I love featuring unique and new Etsy Finds each week and supporting handmade artisans. Glamour and Grace also places a lot of emphasis on promoting excellent photography through Photo Fridays posts.” The concept and goal of Glamour and Grace is to inspire modern brides who want a vintage, stylish wedding that reflects their personalities. “Glamour and Grace is a place for the modern vintage bride to find chic and stylish daily wedding inspiration. My goal is to inspire all brides wanting a wedding with style to create an event that is truly ‘them’!”

o many blogs focus on the bride. What about the groom? He’s getting married too! Grooms Advice was started in December 2008 with their first post was ‘The Million Dollar Ring.’

They first started TheManRegistry.com, a gift and registry site for grooms. After starting TheManRegistry.com, they decided to create the blog Grooms Advice for grooms to find tips, inspiration, and humor for their part of the wedding planning experience. “We had discovered that there are a plethora of blogs that focus on the bride’s side of the wedding... but not much in the way of groom’s blogs. Our mission statement was to provide men with an educational outlet that would make it fun to read about weddings.” Don’t worry guys this blog isn’t as girly, as serious, and so involved like the blogs your ‘brides to be’ read! “I like the fact that it’s not all about hardcore wedding planning. On one day, a groom could read a post on how to find her dream engagement ring. On the next day, he could read a post completely designed for his entertainment, like the top ten signs she hates the engagement ring. We definitely aim to advise the groom on what to expect while planning a wedding, but we also get to have a little fun while doing it!” Grooms Advice is here to stay and will continue to offer a place for the grooms to get information and advice. “We plan to do this by continually thinking outside the box for topic ideas, building our network of expert guest bloggers and even launching a new series of columns written by actual grooms that are currently planning their weddings.”

“The goal of Something Green is to show today’s modern hostess that she does not need to sacrifice style in order to be eco-friendly. I really want to show my readers that all events - no matter the style, the theme or the budget - can be both sophisticated and green.”

ith millions of couples getting married every year that means tons of garbage! But don’t despair! You can still have the wedding of your dreams and make it green too! Just follow Something Green. Angela started this blog in November 2009, after her friends suggested she post her eco-friendly ideas online to help others plan their events. “Our first post was about paperless invites and the rest just sort of fell into place.” Angela worked alongside her father, who is a florist and event planner, to design events from weddings to corporate events. “It was during that time when I began to see firsthand the severe environmental impact that often comes with event design. For me, the impact really began to tarnish otherwise beautiful events. And so I decided to begin looking for small ways that hostesses could add eco touches to their events to help reduce their environmental impact and increase the uniqueness of their event.” Angela loves offering people planning their wedding, or any other type of event, eco-friendly resources. “No matter what type of event a reader is planning, she will more than likely find inspiration to help her plan it on Something Green.” The goal is simple, to help people plan fabulous eco celebrations that are easy, won’t break the budget, and still very chic. “The goal of Something Green is to show today’s modern hostess that she does not need to sacrifice style in order to be eco-friendly. I really want to show my readers that all events – no matter the style, the theme or the budget – can be both sophisticated and green.”

9 Inexpensive Ways to Personalize Your Wedding!

by Amanda Walls, owner of Cherishable Weddings and Events www.cherishablewe.com

Y

ou don’t have to settle for a cookie cutter wedding. You and your fiancé are not just like everyone else, so your wedding should reflect that. There are so many inexpensive ways to really personalize your wedding. 1.

Venue – When choosing a venue, look somewhere that has a sentimental value to you and your fiancé. Did both of your parents get married at the same church? Did you go to a lot of dates at a certain museum and park? Make a list of places that mean something to you and your fiancé, and begin visiting those venues!

2.

Your registry – You want to register for your wedding, so what is the first thing you do? Run off to your nearest Bed, Bath, and Beyond and scan everything you see! Sure, Bed, Bath and Beyond is a great place to register, but try something a little different as well. If you and your fiancé love to camp and hike together, think about registering at your favorite camping outlet.

3.

Invitations – Invitations can really set the tone for your entire wedding, so make it your own. If you are not a traditional couple, don’t go with the traditional invitation. Choose something that really speaks to you, and that you feel truly depicts you and your relationship. It is okay to be fun and quirky with the invitation if your wedding is going to be fun and quirky!

4.

Reception Entertainment – The typical wedding has a band or DJ that everyone dances to all night long! This is great and it can be a lot of fun! If you want to make it a little unique, throw in a fun game or two such as limbo! You might think it sounds a little strange, but think about it! What a better way to get people to get up out of their chairs then a game of limbo. Make sure that you let your DJ know what is going on and also make sure that you have guests that will actually enjoy this.

5.

Invite guests to perform – I know that so many people, including myself, tell you to never hire your friends to “work” at your wedding. I believe this is the exception to that rule! If you have friends who are musicians, singers, dancers, or officiants, ask them to perform your wedding! An officiant who is close to you and your fiancé always adds that extra touching detail. I wouldn’t ask a friend to sing at my entire ceremony or reception, but I would ask them to sing a song that is special to them!

6.

Your exit – You do not have to do the traditional exit to your ceremony where your guests throw rice in the air, and you get into your limo and drive off. Think of something that you and your fiancé do a lot together, or something that really depicts your personalities. Do you love riding motorcycles together? Then why don’t you rent your favorite motorcycle (if you don’t already own it) and use that as your getaway vehicle! Did you meet at a roller rink? Slip on a pair of roller skates and skate off together!

7. Name your tables instead of numbering them – Everybody has been to a wedding where you pick up your table card and see “Table #4”, and then you go searching for the table that matches your number. Why don’t you make your table names into a theme? Name each table a city that you and your fiancé have visited, or have each table represent one of your favorite dates. The possibilities are endless! Get creative with it. You can even add table décor to take your theme to the next level. 8.

Favors that represent you – I know that it can be incredibly difficult to find favors that people will actually keep and use. When you choose a favor that really represents your relationship, it adds something special to that gift that money cannot buy. For example, if you and your fiancé go to a poker tournament every month, think about getting deck of cards as a wedding favor.

9.

Photos – Pictures, pictures, pictures. People can never get enough of them. Add pictures of you and your fiancé at your ceremony and reception. You can add these in your guest book, and lay them around your gift table. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box! The list should not end here! When you are designing your centerpieces, you can etch your initials in the glass or you can even customize your napkins! You do not have to spend a fortune to put your personality into your wedding.

Name your tables instead of numbering them – Why don’t you make your table names into a theme? Name each table a city that you and your fiancé have visited, or have each table represent one of your favorite dates. The possibilities are endless! Get creative with it.

venues

Merion Tribute House www.tributehouse.com

Looking for a unique venue with gorgeous gothic architecture? Look no further then the Merion Tribute house. This beautiful, medieval inspired castle is truly one of a kind. With its high vaulted ceilings, l uxurious auditorium and eight acres of lush ground this venue can become a place where dreams come true. When did the Merion Tribute House start having weddings?1925 What is the history of the Merion Tribute House? After World War I there was considerable national pride and many communities were erecting monuments to the soldiers and the cause. The community of Merion had a history of being progressive in providing community amenities (landscaping, paving, street lighting, police and fire protection); so much so that President Theodore Roosevelt wrote an article in 1917 entitled “Model Merion” extolling the virtues of this ideal suburb. The idea for the Tribute House crystallized in 1918 out of a desire to build a “Peace Memorial Community House” in Merion to hold cultural and social events. Mr. Eldridge Johnson, founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company, was particular interested in the effort as he had two sons who fought in the War. He and his wife offered to demolish their house on the property and raise funds to build the Tribute House in recognition of the 81 men from Merion who served in the armed forces. The Merion War Tribute House was completed in June of 1924 at a cost of $330,000. By its third season in 1927, 115 events were held at the Merion Tribute House, including dance classes, wedding receptions, concerts, luncheons, bridge parties, dinner dances and entertainments for charity.

Photography by Greg Haygood Photography

Were there any celebrity weddings? Yes, we have had celebrity weddings here on occasion, but they are not paparazzi-type affairs. We specialize in more of a low-key intimate feel. Celebrity weddings I’m aware of in the past couple of decades have included a current TV comedienne, Eagles players, and a member of a disco-era pop group. Most memorable wedding moment that happened there? Every wedding is memorable here! But from a management perspective, it’s always the fights or the times when something goes wrong that wind up being what’s most memorable! Like when the lights went out during a storm and the whole event had to be held by candlelight – which actually turned out nicely and most of the guests were not even aware of the situation! We also enjoy seeing people put their own stamp on the place with their decorating. We have had many medieval themed weddings where it’s fun to see the bridal party – and sometimes all the guests – decked out in costume complete with corsets, wreaths of leaves in their hair, etc. We’ve had suits of armor in the hall and jesters out on the lawn. Or Indian weddings are always fun and colorful. We had one where the spent two days decorating in the oranges and greens that are traditional wedding colors there. They covered our drapes with orange fabric and even had cushioned seating on the floor for some guests and a henna station in the lounge. Strangest request from a bride? Some brides prefer to hold their ceremonies, rather than on the front lawn, at a unique spot they feel better reflects their personalities. Since we have eight acres here, there are plenty of nice locations with shady trees or architectural features that speak to them. We have had parties rent tents for the front lawn, side lawn, and once someone even tented the parking lot to hold their ceremony. We get a lot of requests for sparklers (fine) and firecrackers (not so fine) and floating lanterns (OK, within reason!). We try to accommodate most requests as long as the safety and integrity of the building or the nuisance of our neighbors is not affected. What can the Merion Tribute House offer brides and grooms? The Merion Tribute House offers a unique historical venue with enough room to host a modern party. Because of its plentiful architectural details, many brides feel that decorating can be kept to a minimum. We offer personal service and responsiveness so that each bride and groom can customize their wedding and have the day of their dreams here. We offer a choice of catering options to fit every budget.

Maria Paula Urrego & Fernando Uribe July 2, 2010

F

ernando and Maria Paula met a few years ago at Barcroft Bible Church. They are very active at their church; Fernando is an avid musician and sings in the youth group at their church. Maria Paula is a dancer and painter who also teaches young children at the church. Fernando fell head over heels over Maria Paula but couldn’t tell her for the longest time. The closer they became the easier it was for Fernando to let her know about his feelings. Before they could even date they had to meet with their pastors; and it was during the time they were asked to be apart that they realized they could not be apart. They were apart for 4 months and as soon as they were able to be together they planned their quicky wedding. They stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, and it was here where they held a very small and intimate reception. Their ceremony was held at their beloved church Barcroft Bible church.

THE PROPOSAL: Fernando being the musician that he is wanted to do something special for Maria Paula. He proposed to her on a very private video he made for her and posted it on You Tube. The video was Fernando singing Capella to one of her favorite songs and at the end at the end asked her to marry him. They have meetings at church twice weekly and it was during one of these meetings that their friends played the video and at the end she looked up to him to realize he was on his knees with a ring proposing to her.

eckie and Dale were following the trails of Bushkill Falls. After a long walk viewing the beautiful waterfalls, Dale stopped and asked her to marry him. The weather forecast looked grim the morning of the wedding. Skies were grey and Beckie was understandably worried. Luckily, just about an hour before the outdoor ceremony was to begin the sun began to shine. Dale and Beckie wanted to have a intimate moment together prior to the ceremony, so they opted to see each other and have a few pictures taken in a private setting. Her face glowed as she first saw Dale across the way, his back turned to her. Dale slightly rocked; anxiously waiting to see his bride. Moments later, he was lightly tapped on the shoulder and a smile stretched across his face as he quickly spun around. He was in complete awe, at first only able to say “You look beautiful. After a few pictures, it was time for the ceremony to begin. Dale let out a bit of nervous laughter as he awaited his bride’s entrance. Finally, the guests rose and the attention was on Beckie. As they each read the vows they had written, tears formed in each of their eyes. Neither Dale nor Beckie will ever forget the moment the pastor reached out to hand Dale the ring, he dropped it. Luckily Dale managed to grab the ring before it plummeted into the pond below. It has become quite common for the bride and groom to partake in the cocktail hour with their guests. A short while later, it was time for the party to begin! Bruce of Music Dr. Djs kept the party alive all night long. Almost immediately he had guests on the dance floor and encouraged everyone to participate in his clever games. Smiles from all lit the room and it was obvious that everyone had a great time!

Erin & Eric Hanson - December 18th, 2010

ric and Erin met while working freshman orientation at Minne sota State University. Erin worked as an Orientation Student Coordinator while Eric was working as an Orientation Student Peer Advisor (that is Erin was Erics’s student supervisor!) During the summer the staff was split into two different teams and of course Eric was on Erin’s team, so they got to know each other very well. By the end of summer Eric and Erin found themselves spending a lot of time together and eventually they realized that maybe they were more than just work friends. Eric and I started walking on the snowy path and we stopped a few times to use our binoculars at the overlooks. Finally, we reached a new road block where there was a huge snow bank. I was ready to turn around, but Eric said he wanted to climb the snow bank and look out at the mountains.

So I said that I would climb the snow, however I actually was ready to turn back (we probably walked about 1 mile). After standing on top of the snow bank for awhile we both remarked on how beautiful it was and what a great day we had. Eric had been standing behind me holding me around the waist and then said “It’s been a really great day” and I said “yeah it has been.” Then Eric said “well why don’t we make it a better one” I responded by saying “well how are we going to do that” and then he spun me around to face him and he said “Why don’t we make it a great life” and then he got on one knee on the snow bank and said “Marry Me” Our wedding was very special because we had so many people helping us make our day perfect. Like most couples our family and friends helped make our day special, but unlike most couples we had spent the summer before our wedding working at our wedding venue. We had plans to take on extra jobs to pay for our wedding and our wedding venue, The Wild Basin Lodge and Event Center needed extra staff for the busy spring/summer wedding season, so we were hired. We had a great summer working for the Basin and as of seeing so many weddings and getting to know the Wild Basin staff we were able to add many special touches to our wedding. The Wild Basin gave us the same great service that other couples received, but having spent so much time there and having made so many new friends everything was just that much more special. Our wedding had a snowflake theme. There were snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, on the cake, hanging from the christmas tree, on our unity candle, and with a little help they fell from the sky. The minister for our wedding was Erin’s father. During our wedding he pointed out that this theme was quite appreciate, since as a child Erin insisted on being called Snowflake, refusing to answer to her given name. A story he happily shared with all our guests. ...and of course the cake cutting was great. As we cut the cake Erin made sure to grab the piece with all the frosting. Right on cue our cake cutting song, “Hit me with your best shot,” came blaring through the DJ’s speakers and Eric was covered in frosting, so much so that it was on his tux (and in his beard!) for the rest of the nigh

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Press the unrolled dough bit by bit into the jars a bit at a time (not too thick!) until the jars are lined with the dough up to the rims. Reserve some dough for toppers. Next, fill jars nearly to the top with filling of choice.

Bake at 325 degrees for roughly 30-35 minutes or until dough becomes a light golden color. At that time, arrange the dough hearts on the pies, brush the hearts with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar. Bake an additional 1015 minutes until dough is golden brown all the way around the jars. If needed, place foil over the tops of the jars to keep the hearts from burning.

Remove and let jars cool on a rack. Decorate with ribbon, tags, or labels on lids as desired and give to your family, friends or wedding guests!
