Guided Hiking in the Finger Lakes

The Cayuga Trails Club (CTC) is celebrating its st anniversary this year. e club is responsible for maintaining roughly  miles of the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) System. e main FLT is  miles long, with the branch and loop trails currently adding an additional  miles. e FLT was conceived in  by several hiking clubs, including the CTC, and has been completed in sections over many years since.

e Finger Lakes Trail, true to its name, traverses the entire Finger Lakes region and then some. Beginning in the west at the Pennsylvania border in the Allegheny State Forest, it winds its way eastward weaving north and south past the southern ends of the larger lakes, ending at the Long Path in the Catskills. e FLT crosses Tompkins County through the Connecticut Hill Wildlife

Management Area in Newfield, Robert Treman State Park in Enfield, the Danby State Forest, and Shindagin Hollow State Forest in Caroline and Dryden.

For routine trail maintenance a group of CTC volunteers will take on a two or three mile stretch and pick up sticks in the trail, refresh blazes on the trees, and cut back encroaching vegetation about two or three times per year. At longer intervals a larger party will convene to repair bridges and cut up downed trees that have fallen across the trail.

In addition to their maintenance responsibilities, the CTC leads guided hikes on portions of the FLT and the Cayuga Trail, which is an -mile route through the Fall Creek Natural Area owned by Cornell University.

e nature of the guiding will vary accord-

ing to the club member who leads the hike. Different leaders will have different information to offer. Some leaders might have knowledge about trees and plants, while others might be more well versed when it comes to fun facts about local history and wildlife. Although groups frequently see signs of bears, they have never spotted one. However, hikers occasionally see deer, fox, birds, butterfl ies, and salamanders.

e hike leader also explains the route beforehand—including its level of difficulty— asking people to sign a simple waiver form.

e club will be offering hilkes this summer on Tuesdays and Saturdays. A full schedule is posted at their website: cayugatrailsclub. org. e club also posts a list of “ essentials’’ to bring along on a hike on their website.

NEW CROSSING UNITES PREVIOUSLY SEPARATED TRAILS

On Saturday, May  residents and public figures of the Towns of Dryden and Ithaca commemorated the opening of the Game Farm Road crossing between the Dryden Rail Trail and the East Ithaca Recreation Way, which connects the two trails. Two groups of trail users – each walking, running, or riding bicycles – approached Game Farm Road simultaneously on both trails, arriving from designated starting points near the trails, and opened the symbolic gates to officially make the crossing accessible.

Although the Game Farm section of the Dryden Rail Trail has been open since fall , the crossing at Game Farm Road required additional planning and improvements to make it safe for the public. ese efforts included conducting a traffic study, developing a crossing plan, negotiating a speed limit reduction with New York Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), regrading and repaving a section of the road, and installing new signage, a crosswalk, and fl ashing warning signals.

May ’s festivities technically celebrated the reopening of this connecting section. is portion was open at one point until Hurricane Agnes hit the area in , causing the stretch of railroad to close for  years.

“For most of those  years after the train stopped, the East Ithaca Recreation Way was becoming a beautiful trail and linear park that we now love,” Bob Beck, chairman of the Dryden Rail Trail Task Force, said at the May  ceremony. “Building a public trail on Dryden’s side of the road remained a daunting challenge.”

e project required committed and strong partnerships among multiple jurisdictions, which Beck thanked in his speech. Game Farm Road is maintained by Tompkins County, and NYSDOT oversees speed limits. e center of the road marks the border between the Towns of Ithaca and Dryden, both of which collaborated on developing studies and the crossing plan, as well as installing the approved infrastructure. In October , the Tompkins County Highway Department removed the largest obstacle to the crossing by fl attening a rise in the road that created line-of-sight safety issues for motorists and trail users alike.

e crossing now allows for safer travel for users of either or both trails to visit and witness the natural beauties they have to offer, such as the Cascadilla Gorge Natural Area.

is natural area connects downtown Ithaca with the Cornell Campus among one of the most picturesque gorges in the Finger Lakes Region, according to ithacatrails.org.

Ascending over  feet, this set of stone trails and staircases was originally constructed in the late ’s, and takes visitors through the gorge formed from ancient bedrock and past six waterfalls.

is can be accessed along the northern section of the East Ithaca Recreation Way, and also features the MacDaniels Nut Grove, which is a forest farming and agroforestry research and education center. e -acre site, just east of Cornell Orchards, was originally planted in the s by pioneering horticulturist Dr. L.H. MacDaniels (-). According to Cornell University, the grove was neglected for decades before researchers and students began renovating the site and establishing new research projects in . e site is home to demonstrations of a wide range of crops that can be grown in the forest, including mushrooms, wild leeks, ginseng, ornamental plants, nuts, and fruits like Paw Paw.

As one progresses southward along the trail, more attractions arise like Mitchell Street Hawthorn icket. is natural area is a prime bird watching site. According to Cornell Botanical Gardens, when the hawthorn thickets are in bloom in spring, they attract an unusually high number of migratory songbirds, including hermit and wood thrushes, scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings, orchard and Baltimore orioles, and rose-breasted grosbeaks and + species of warblers.

A League for All

DISC GOLF GAINS IN POPULARITY

Have you ever wondered what those chaincladded metal baskets were near the Cornell University Child Care Center?

ose baskets are actually golf pins.

Of course, they aren’t ball golf pins. Rather, they are for disc golf – a sport similar to ball golf, except instead of knocking a ball into a small hole, players toss discs into hanging chains on a basket.

It is also a sport that has great popularity in the Ithaca community as exhibited by the DiscIthaca league. Made up of more than  folks, the league offers opportunities for individuals to compete and improve their skills in the game or simply play for leisure.

“It’s super laid back. Really fun group of people,” Brandon Fortenberry, league manager and member since , said. “Our format is pretty low key. I know some leagues you get people taking it extremely serious[ly] and can run into some challenges with folks not agreeing with rules and regulations are just super low key.”

DiscIthaca was established through a Leadership Tompkins – a community leadership development program – project in . e league holds a few tournaments throughout the season (spring to fall), but is primarily structured around flex rounds, which allows a card of players to play a round of golf at a time that works best for each person’s schedule.

“ e goal is just to get people out and playing with other people,” Fortenberry said. “And so the idea is you can play around whenever you want. You count that as a league round.”

is format cultivates comradery among league members, which is one of the main reasons why Fortenberry enjoys his membership.

“It’s less about me getting better at this golf, because that ship has mostly sailed,” he said. “I make improvements where I can, but in general it’s really just about getting out, having fun and connecting with people.”

e league also works to establish relationships with the Ithaca community. Money raised by the league from events is donated to public education programs. Last year, the league held a charity fundraising tournament for the Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) and raised over $, from the event.

Pat Govang, who is one of the original founders of DiscIthaca, said one of his favorite aspects of the league is the variety of individuals participating.

“I think we see an element of transient players that are either going to be in Ithaca for a period of time going to school that are active in playing and come out. I think one of the coolest parts, for me, is just the diversity, the people, the new faces that come out every year to join the league.”

ose actively participating in league rounds range from teenagers to people in their ’s. e

sport features a multitude of divisions – amateur and professional – for players across all ages and skill levels. People under the age of  can compete in four different amateur levels – one being for the most skilled golfers and four being for novice players. en there are age-specific adult divisions – +, + +, +, +, +, +, + – as well as junior divisions for children that are either at or under the ages of six, eight, ten, twelve, fi fteen and eighteen.

ere is no age requirement for registering to the league. Individuals interested in signing up only need to pay a fee of $.

“ ey then sign up and play as many rounds as they want,” Fortenberry said. “We tally scores at the end of the season for best scores. We give a few prizes for most improved, best round, any aces, things like that. So there’s no other requirements; anyone that wants to join can join.”

“It definitely is a motivator when you kind of have that investment,” he said of playing in the league. “It gets you out more often. It connects you to people. … ere’s some really great disc golfers in our group. It’s a great community that likes to help people learn and grow and develop.”

Govang said people interested in joining that are concerned about whether or not they are good enough will be at ease once they are registered and playing with other members.

“ e way to really get better at the game is playing with others that are better,” he said. “I think you’ll fi nd that the folks in the club and in the league are more than welcoming to new people, and bringing them on board and … giving them tips and tricks to improve their game and get more enjoyment out of it.”

CAYUGA NATURE CENTER EDUCATES ON CLIMATE, CAYUGA LAKE AND THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT ALL SUMMER LONG

Whether you’ve got a little one who’s an animal lover or you’re curious about Cayuga Lake’s ecology and history, there’s something for everyone at Cayuga Nature Center this summer.

Cayuga Nature Center, which falls under the umbrella of the Paleontological Research Institute, has regular programs throughout the summer for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors and learn a bit more about our natural world.

One of the most popular programs, according to Associate Director for Nature Center Programs Katie Bagnall-Newman, is the center’s summer camp. It’s open to campers ages  and up and is a full-day program. It runs the full  weeks of summer vacation and is open for registration until June , unless it fills up

sooner.

If you can’t commit to summer camp, there are plenty of other scheduled programs open to the public. e Lodge is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is “pay what you wish,” making is accessibly for most. Inside you’ll find a couple exhibits on Cayuga Lake, focusing mainly on the lake’s ecology and history, providing a good opportunity to learn about the longest of the Finger Lakes.

ere is also a climate change exhibit inside e Lodge, which provides a detailed look at climate change in New York State and in the Finger Lakes region specifically. ere are also live animal exhibits within e Lodge as well as outside.

For nature lovers who want to enjoy the outdoors this summer, there is a meadow

walk every Sunday  a.m. –  p.m. BagnallNewman said the hikes are easy to moderate and move at a relatively slow pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop and rest at benches. However, the trail is not accessible for wheelchair users.

You can follow up your meadow walk by meeting one of the Nature Center’s animal ambassadors face-to-face. Bagnall-Newman said they rotate through different animals, so depending on the day you might meet Callie the black rat snake, Mort the eastern box turtle (apparently a fan favorite), or Frank and Beans, the opossums that Bagnall-Newman describes as “quite charismatic.”

e Nature Center also does hikes at Smith Woods, which is an old growth forest in Trumansburg.

“It’s an absolutely beautiful forest, and dur-

ing the GrassRoots Festival we try to get a couple hikes in,” Bagnall-Newman said. at will take place July - this year.

You may also want to keep an eye out for programs coming to the Tompkins County Public Library this summer.

All programs hosted by Cayuga Nature Center, except for summer camp, are open to the public at no cost.

“Donations are appreciated but not expected,” Bagnall-Newman said.

Advance registration is not required. Most programs meet in front of e Lodge, but the animal ambassadors program is in the courtyard.

For more information on events, visit https://www.cayuganaturecenter.org/.

“We’re excited to have folks out this summer,” Bagnall-Newman said.

Exploring Ithaca’s spectacular landscape with her trusty pal, Tasha, gives Loretta great scenery and even better company. Whether she’s hiking to the heart of the gorge or just taking in the falls, she always enjoys the natural beauty of the area.

Living on the 105-acre campus of Kendal at Ithaca not only keeps Loretta connected to the places and companions she loves, but the care she may need someday. And, from here, the story just keeps getting better.

The Motor Racing Archive

RACING HISTORY RESEARCH LIBRARY THAT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) in Watkins Glen is a research library, an archive, but not really a museum.

“We have collections,” Glenda Gephart, former Director of Administration and Communications, said, “and that includes memorabilia, fine art, trophies—both active and inactive—model cars, and drivers helmets. [IMRRC] was created as a place for people to donate their private collections. We are also a repository for the corporate papers of racing organizations.”

Because of the completeness of its collections and its accessibility the IMRRC is frequently used by the film and television industry and by writers chronicling the history of racing.

While there are other research facilities around the world, most of them are dedicated to preserving the artifacts of a particular racing series or track. IMRRC is devoted to archiving the history of all motor racing sports. (Motor racing is defined as land-based vehicles- automobiles and motorcycles.)

Researchers come from around the world to use the facility, which is also open to the general public. Children from the local schools often do research there. No appointments are necessary and the building is open from  a.m.

to  p.m. Monday through Friday, and by appointment on Saturdays.

In addition to being open regular hours, the IMRRC regularly holds public events, such as lectures. A schedule for lectures for the current year can be found at https://www.racingarchives.org/center-conversations/.

e IMRRC also has a film collection that numbers in the thousands. All of these are available to the public for individual screenings. ey include feature films, documentaries, and newsreels. ere is no regular schedule of screenings. In addition there is always a racing car on display at the research center. Visitors are allowed to inspect it at close range, something not possible at the racetrack.

e IMRRC was founded in , a year after the th anniversary of the Watkins Glen racing track. e library is an independent not-for-profit that collaborates with the nearby racetrack, but is not formally associated with it. e current chair of the governing council is John R. Saunders, the International Speedway Corp. and Watkins Glen International, as well as one of the originators of the concept of the IMRRC. Mario Andretti, one of the more famous drivers of the last  years, is a member of the IMRRC Drivers’ Council, an advisory board.

Cayuga White is a hybrid grape that everyone in the Finger Lakes wine industry seems to like. It is, in a way, like your favorite indie band: you stumble across it by accident, think it is amazing, buy every new album they make, and—depending on what kind of fan you are—either tell everyone you know about it orkeep it to yourself and, when someone else discovers it, smugly announce you’ve known about it for years and, yeah, it is great. Since  Cayuga White—it really could be a band name—has been grown throughout the Finger Lakes region but in few other places. So, it well known here (by some) but has name recognition problems in the rest of the world (and well, here too).

e Cayuga White story begins in, of all places, Vermont. In  the proverbial family tree sprouted as a natural cross between a Vitis labrusca and a V. vinifera variety. James Milton Clough discovered this ancestral white grape growing in Stamford, Vt. and named it “Green Mountain,” although it is now more often called Winchell. It is usually used as a table grape but was also proved useful for further crossing at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University at Geneva.

In  Winchell was bred with Moore’s Diamond—which was derived from red Concord and white Iona parents—to make the white Ontario grape. In  G.D. Oberle and Richard Wellington crossed the Ontario

TO KNOW IT IS TO LOVE IT

with Zinfandel to produce a red variety called Schuyler. Finally, Schuyler was crossed with Seyval Blanc in  to produce Cayuga White, also called Geneva White and New York -. is long and winding history of multiple crosses between red and white grape varieties means that Cayuga White includes genes from V. labrusca, V. lincecumii, V. rupestris and V. vinifera. With this mixed heritage, it is, you might say, a truly American grape.

It is a versatile variety. Although Cayuga White is usually found in the form of a still, semi-sweet to semi-dry wine, if picked especially early, it has enough acidity to make a sparkling wine, and its skin is thick enough to be left on the vine to produce a late-harvest dessert wine. It is best if it is consumed within a year of bottling and cannot be aged.

Cayuga White is not as cold-hardy as some of the other French-American hybrids, but it generally lacks the “foxy” aroma of its labrusca forebears retained by some other hybrids.

When Vanessa Hoffman started at Knapp Winery in Romulus a year and a half ago, the owners were about to stop making Cayuga White, but she convinced them to keep it in the line-up after she determined that it had a steady following. “It’s not complex,” she said. “It’s a good summer sipper, something easy after work. It’s aromatic and there’s a little tropical fruit in it. I’m an advocate for easier wines.”

Hoffman has been in the wine industry

for  years. She grew up in San Jose and in  received an undergraduate degree in microbiology, but went to work in the wineries of Napa and Sonoma counties. at drew her into what turned out to be her real calling. In  she got a master’s degree in viticulture and

oenology from an Italian university, spending the “work study” portion of the program in the Piedmont and Chianti regions. She then worked elsewhere around the world, but the Finger Lakes is her first cold-climate wine region.

“I haven’t worked with hybrids before,” Hoffman said. “ ey have huge potential, but have gotten a bad rap and have been poorly marketed.” She feels that their price point has been put too low compared to the vinifera wines. e fermentation process changes sugar into alcohol. Many winemakers stop the conversion at the sugar level they want to achieve. Hoffman, however, takes the juice through the process until it is “mostly dry.” She then adds sugar to “dial in the sweetness.” e Knapp Winery version of this wine has a residual sugar (RS) level of .%.

Lakeshore Winery, also in Romulus, takes a different approach. John and Annie Bachman make two versions of Cayuga White: one is sweet (% RS) and the other is drier than Knapp’s (.% RS). ey began making it as a sweet wine soon after they bought the winery in . But about  years ago, John, the winemaker, had an idea. “He said, ‘Let’s make it dry,’” Annie Bachman recalled. “I said, ‘No one will want it.’ Well, I was completely wrong.” It is their best selling wine.

e Bachmans lightly oak their dry Cayuga White to make it a breed apart from the many other bottles of this common Finger Lakes wine. Bachman likes the grape. “It’s not as fruity

as a native grape, and we pick it early and oak it a little so there isn’t a strong fruit taste,” she said. “But it isn’t as dry or as oaky as a Chardonnay.”

A bit further south along its eponymous lake, Jeff Hauck of Lucas Vineyards uses Cayuga White in a variety of ways. Hauck has been the winemaker at Lucas since . “We use it in a lot of products,” he said, “that range from a sparkling bottle-fermented wine”— Extra Dry Sparkling (.% RS)—“to sweeter wines”—Butterfly (.% RS). e bottle they call Cayuga White is .% RS, but they also make two blends that combine it with one of its parents, Seyval Blanc (Lucas Blues, .% RS) and with another hybrid, Vidal Blanc (Mistletoe Magic, .% RS).

“It has tons of fruit,” Hauck said. “It’s like a Riesling in fruit profi le, but it has a lot of natural acidity that balances the sweetness and is refreshing on the palate.”

Hauck said it is also easy to grow. “Growers love it because it is consistent, and you always get a decent crop. It survives a Finger Lakes winter.” After a hot, dry summer Cayuga White grapes will have, he said, more “tree fruit” fl avors—apricots, peaches—and pineapple. Cool, wet summers induce the citrus fl avors that many associate with this variety.

“We pick it at low sugar levels,” Hauck said, “because higher sugar brings out the native side of the hybrid.”At Lucas this grape, depending on its destination, is either fermented as Hoff man does it at Knapp—“letting it go all the way”—or Hauck stops the process at a chosen point.

e Lucas winemaker feels its primary limitation is being unknown outside the region. “People are familiar with the vinifera names, but not with Cayuga White,” Hauck said. “Wineries put proprietary names on it because people don’t know it.”

in Burdett calls their sparkling Cayuga “White Rise.” It is the only bottle into which owner/ winemaker Jeff Dill puts this grape; most of the rest of his catalog is made with vinifera grapes.

In answer to the question, why do you make it this way, Dill said, “We love Cayuga and we love bubbles.”But while Lucas makes its sparkling Cayuga via a second fermentation in the bottle, Dill uses forced carbonation.

“We do it this way to keep the character of the wine,” he said, “because the fruit quality is so good. Fermenting it for a year or two might hide it.”

White Rise is relatively dry (.-.% RS) and it is J.R. Dill’s best seller. “People like the fl avor,” Dill said. “And the fruit changes from year to year. is year it’s quite tropical with kiwi, grapefruit, and cantaloupe fl avors.” He describes it as an “everyday, run-of-the-mill wine” that he would recommend pairing with any sort of appetizer.

Northward and on the other side of Seneca Lake you will fi nd “Arctic Fox” at Fox Run Vineyards in Penn Yan. Winemaker Craig Hosbach calls Cayuga White “the best all around of the hybrids in terms of quality and consistency.” Fox Run has been buying these grapes from Simmons Vineyards on Keuka Lake for many years.

“You need to bring it in early,” Hosbach said, “or it starts to taste like Niagara.” is early harvest means it is off the vine before a lot of the poor weather events that tend to arrive late in the season. “But even in a bad year,” he said, “I can make it well.”

Hosbach chaptalizes—adds sugar to the must before fermentation—Cayuga White and then stops the fermentation when it is at  grams (%) residual sugar. He fi nds a bright green apple and melon in Arctic Fox, but adds that the fruit is not as nuanced as a Riesling.

Annie Bachman believes Seneca Lake wineries give Cayuga White proprietary names because they didn’t want to mention the name of that “other lake.” In fact, some Seneca wineries—Glenora Wine Cellars, for example— unabashedly label it Cayuga White, while others give it a name because it is part of a blend. Whatever the truth may be, J.R. Dill

Hosbach sees a brighter future for hybrids like Cayuga White. “Younger consumers don’t care about tradition,” he said, “so they are open to hybrids.” Interestingly, he credits the craft beer movement. “ ey’ve opened the doors because consumers have become used to a vast array of fl avors.”

The wine-selling business is constantly evolving, and the change comes from both sides. Within the industry winery owners and winemakers must make do with what nature gives them, whether due to the location of their vineyards or the vicissitudes of the weather from year to year. e taste of the wine-buying public is always on the move too.

Once upon a time Americans didn’t drink much wine and when they did, it was sweet. But after the s Americans ventured into the vinifera market, experimenting with dryer, more tannin-rich wines and gravitating toward bottles with varietal names. Wine drinkers de-

Vineyards. “We’ve come along way in learning how to ripen them.” Janowski described Seneca Red (which was once called Reserve Red) as an “entry-level” wine. “You can call it a ‘value wine’ too,” he said. “It isn’t an aging wine and you can drink it with pizza.”

He described the visitors to Wagner Vineyards as being “on varying steps of the wine journey.” People still new to wine, Janowski said, may not like the tannins in drier wines—or may even have an allergy to them— and others are simply intimidated by the hype around wine drinking. Seneca Red, he felt, is a solution. At .% residual sugar, it qualifies as a “semi-dry” wine.

Janowski said the advantage of the hybrids is that they are cold-hardy and easy to grow. “ eir flavor can be a little harsh, so we use old oak to soften it. We use old oak so that it doesn’t get that oak flavor, but lets the cherry, strawberry and other red fruits remain.”

Seneca Red may sometimes have vinifera blended into it. In some years, if some vinifera grapes do not ripen enough to make a varietal bottle, Wagner will add them to their hybrid blend. At Knapp Winery in Romulus on Cayuga Lake this is the standard practice for making their Pasta Red Reserve. Like Seneca Red it has .% residual sugar (RS), but it is  to % Merlot, Syrah, or Sangiovese grapes. In order to distance this brand from Pasta Red, Knapp will be relabeling it as “Profundo Rosso.”

Knapp’s Pasta Red (.% RS) is made entirely with hybrids, but not always the same ones. It can include Baco Noir, De Chaunac, or Arandell. According to Knapp winemaker Vanessa Hoffman, this year’s Pasta Red is % Baco Noir. is grape, a cross between the vinifera variety Folle Blanché and and an unknown V. riparia , has very high acidity and the other varieties are added to temper that quality, but in  yields were low and so was the acidity.

veloped a certain amount of pride at being able to tell the difference between a Pinot Noir and a Zinfandel. Now even some French vintners deign to note on the back label whether their Bordeaux is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.

rough much of the th century Finger Lakes wines were largely made with hybrid and native grapes. is continued for many years after Konstanin Frank proved that vinifera could be grown here and decent wine made with it. And it was the red vinifera wines that took longer to come along. Consequently, wineries in the region developed blends of hybrid grapes and many continue to sell them right

into the st century.

e Wagners have been growing grapes on the east shore of Seneca Lake for five generations. In  they began to make wine. eir Seneca Red is a blend of two French-American hybrid grapes: De Chaunac and Chancellor. ese were both developed in France in the late th century by Albert Seibel after the phylloxera infestation wiped out most vinifera grapes. ey are now, however, grown and used to make wine almost exclusively in the northeastern United States.

“In  [these grapes] reflected the makeup of the vineyard,” said Alex Janowski, the vice president of brand development at Wagner

Hoffman said that Pasta Red used to be more popular, but the public is moving away from it. “It tastes like a dry wine, but it’s bigger and riper,” she said. “It is a sort of California style.”

Lakeshore Winery in Romulus once used Baco Noir to make Rocking Chair Red, but the grape has become harder to get. It is highly susceptible to “black rot” and has been torn out in many vineyards. Annie Bachman, who owns Lakeshore with her winemaker husband John, said that Rocking Chair is now a blend of % Chambourcin and % Rougeon, which are both FrenchAmerican hybrids.

Chambourcin wines are known for black cherry and plum flavors, and they are often

spicy with a range of herbal aromas. Rougeon is known for its dark berry-fruit character and relatively low acidity. Rocking Chair Red is unusual among red hybrid blends in having no residual sugar at all.

Six Mile Creek Winery in Ithaca makes a hybrid bottle called Ithaca Red. It is now % Maréchal Foch but, according to Emma Mulderrig of the Six Mile tasting room, it once included Cabernet Franc. Maréchal Foche is a teinturier grape—both the skin and flesh are dark red—and the wine is very dark in the glass. Mulderrig said that in spite of its color it was very “light in the glass” and fruit-forward.

Six Mile Creek’s winemaker Paul King, who has been at the winery full-time for  years, said that Ithaca Red used to be made with Baco Noir but, as others have noted, that grape is increasingly hard to fi nd and very acidic.

“Ithaca Red is meant to be a gateway drug to red wine,” King joked. “People fi nd the bigger reds off-putting. ey’re strong, tannic and dry.” e Maréchal Foch is “loaded with strawberry fl avor,” said King. “It has a nicer presence than the Baco and is almost as inexpensive. It is very much like a Gamay. I’m surprised it is not more widely used. It ripens almost as early as Baco, perhaps a week later.” He noted the Maréchal Foch is also surprisingly consistent from year to year. Only excessive rain can reduce its yield.

King makes Ithaca Red in a particular way. He takes a third of the quantity and puts it through malolactic conversion—which changes the tart malic acid to softer lactic acid—to add complexity and weight. He then blends this back into the other two-thirds. “I cool fer-

ment it to preserve the fruit,” he said, “and we use oak chips”—not barrels—“so we don’t bury the fruit.” He brings this wine to the boundary of dry and semi-dry—traditionally .% RS— and then stops fermentation.

Like Hoff man at Knapp, King is a booster of hybrids. “You can fi nd  Rieslings out there,” he said, “but I tell people to try the lesser known grapes. ere are some spectacular Seyval Blancs and Vignoles.”

Jeff Hauck, the winemaker at Lucas Vineyards, used to make Dry Dock (.% RS) with Baco Noir. About eight years ago he began adding Noiret to it. Noiret was developed at the Cornell Agricultural Research Station in Geneva and released in . “It balances the acidity,” Hauck said, echoing his fellow winemakers. “Baco can be a struggle because of crazy high acidity in some years.” Like King, Hauck puts Dry Dock through malolactic conversion to soften it without changing the fl avor profi le.

He described Dry Dock as a “decent seller” with a fi rm place in the winery’s offerings. “People like this blend,” Hauck said, “because after all the vinifera, it is nice to fi nd a different fl avor profi le.”

Craig Hosbach is the winemaker at Fox Run Vineyards on Seneca Lake, a winery that in fact uses very few hybrids. But Hosbach stared his career in New Jersey and spend a decade at ousand Islands wineries.“We need hybrids to hedge our bets. We don’t need the  that we’re growing in the Finger Lakes now, but a smaller number that are suitable to make varietals.”

Apparently sometimes we reach back into the past in order to make our future.

Bird Watching in the Finger Lakes

Birding enthusiasts will have ample opportunities to practice their hobby in the Finger Lakes this summer, including in the local Sapsucker Woods, the site of Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology.

Marc Devokaitis, Associate Editor for Living Bird Magazine/AllAboutBirds.org for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, said that at Sapsucker Woods, the pergola on the west shore of the pond near the entrance to the visitor’s center, as well as the observation platform on the opposite shore, are good spots for bird watching. He said Sapsucker Woods is a good mix of habitats, featuring ponds, shrubby areas, open fields nearby, older forests and younger forests, allowing for diversity in the birds.

“When you have a lot of habits come together like that, it tends to have an opportunity for lots of different kinds of birds,” Devokaitis said. “Another great thing about this spot is that it’s an island of green amidst, airport, shopping mall, residential, everything, this is sort of an undeveloped couple hundred acres.”

Devokaitis also recommended Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls, saying that it is an ideal place for those who want to get photos of eagles and waterfowl, and has a wildlife drive that makes it accessible for birders with mobility issues; as well as Stewart Park and Treman Marine Park. He said there are many good spots for birding in the area, and recommended the Cayuga Bird Club website, located at https://sites.google.com/site/ cbc/about-us, for a list of birding spots, as well as ebird.org for informationas to which species can be found in any given region at any given time.

“ ere’s dozens and dozens of spots right around Ithaca, and as you go out in the Finger Lakes, there’s hundreds of spots that could be

good,” Devokaitis said.

Devokaitis said the big months for spring migration for birds are April and May. He noted that while many birders consider August their least favorite month, due to the high temperatures being post-breeding and pre-migration, Sapsucker Woods is a great place for birding early in the summer to look for nesting activity and baby birds.

“If you’re going to go out in the summer, you really want to go out fi rst thing in the morning or last thing in the evening,” Devokaitis said. “ at’s when the birds are most active.”

Devokaitis recommends that birders join bird walks that are led by knowledgeable people. He said Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology does bird walks at : a.m. on Saturday and Sunday all year long, and the Cayuga Bird Club does half day or whole day trips on weekends.

According to Devokaitis, birding is an inexpensive hobby, and he recommends spending $ to $ on a decent pair of binoculars. He also recommends that beginning birders get a good field paper guide, and while apps like the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s free Merlin bird identifying app can identiy birds on description, sound or picture, paper guides can help birders compare different species to identiy a bird they spotted.

Devokaitis recommended birding to those who enjoy looking for wildlife and being outside in nature, since it helps people reconnect with nature, and “birders are cool” in his opinion.

“It takes you to unexpected and beautiful places,” Devokaitis said. “It lets you basically discover the land around around you, because you start to realize that to see birds, you need to go to places that are probably less traveled by people, usually. So the places that it helps you discover around, that’s probably one of the biggest joys that I get out

it.”

Local Legend

THE TAUGHANNOCK GIANT

The American huckster has a long pedigree, and we’re a people with an appetite for curiosities. On occasion, those two things have merged in our own backyard. A hare-brained scheme, hatched by some enterprising citizens of Trumansburg, is one such example and a favorite bit of Tompkins County history.

On a hot July Wednesday in , some workers were widening a road by a popular hotel called the Taughannock House on the upper glen overlooking Taughannock Gorge (approximately where the Falls Overlook traffic island circle is in the state park today). Late in the morning, they hit what they thought was a big rock, but as they dug further, they uncovered what appeared to be a gigantic, ancient, petrified man. e creature’s hands were crossed over his right thigh, and the left leg crossed over the right, and it was huge. Around the neck seemed to grow the roots of a nearby tree.

News of this sensational discovery spread quickly, and by day’s end spectators started to materialize at the site. e newspapers were also drawn, like moths to a flame. Reporters from the Watkins Express and Waterloo Observer were on the scene the next day, and within two days a reporter from the New York World was there. It was the  equivalent of a story going viral.

e owner of the hotel wasted no time in having photographs taken for public sale, and set up a tent over the hole, charging ten cents admission to see the spectacle. Business was excellent, and stayed that way.

ere was skepticism regarding the authenticity of the find from the beginning, though, and with good reason. Just a decade earlier, in , a similar huge “petrified man” was uncovered by workers digging a well in Cardiff, near Syracuse. It wasn’t real, of course. A New York City tobacconist had bought a -foot-long block of gypsum, and had it secretly carved into the likeness of a man. Using stains and acids to simulate aging, he then had it transported and buried behind the barn on his cousin’s farm, where it was ‘discovered’ by the well-diggers.

Like in Trumansburg, a tent was set up over the ‘Cardiff Giant’ and  cents, quickly increased to  cents, was charged for people who wanted to see it. Customers came in droves, but before long the scammer confessed to the fraud. It was one of the most famous hoaxes in American history and would still have been well known to people in .

Still, in spite of this recent bit of attempted skullduggery, Cornell University and other scientists asked for, and received, permission to chip off small fragments of the Taughannock

artifact for closer study. Scientific opinions were duly rendered, but were decidedly mixed.

In any event, the hoax didn’t survive for long. Within days, one of the schemers, Frank Creque, his tongue loosened by in a Trumansburg tavern, revealed that the stone uncovered on the hotel property was also a fake. According to Creque, the plan was contrived to attract business to the Taughannock House hotel. e hotel’s owner, John ompson, along with Ira Dean, a Trumansburg mechanic, and Mr. Creque, had mixed a concoction of eggs, beef blood, iron filings and cement, molded the material into the shape of a prehistoric collosus, and baked it in a huge oven. en, late at night, the three men took the -pound object by wagon to the scene of its discovery. ey tunneled in from the side and pushed the stone man through the hole to its resting place, wrapping a tree root around the neck so it would look as if it had grown there.

e idea was that the earth above would look undisturbed to the road crew, and it worked.

e fact that the ground above the fossil hadn’t been disturbed was later cited as convincing proof of the object’s authenticity.

It’s a classic story from the s. It was a time when people were on the make. e country was finally recovering from a long economic depression in , and speculative investments and get-rich-quick schemes were

rampant. ere was a fascination with novelties and unusual phenomena, and there were fortunes to be made, if one could get a lucky break. at year, former president Ulysses S. Grant was pouring his money into a Ponzi scheme that would render him almost penniless, and the greatest show on earth was P.T. Barnum’s “Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome,” a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of “freaks.”

John ompson seemed particularly to have the hustler’s spirit. To drum up business, he had previously hired a Canadian tightrope walker named “Professor” Andrew Jenkins to walk a rope , feet long and  feet above Taughannock Gorge as a publicity stunt.

Ultimately, thousands came to see the Taughannock Giant, and even after the scheme was exposed, there were people who refused to believe that Dean had actually made it. In order to convince them, Dean had to create another in miniature to convince them that it had actually been man-made. Soon enough, the public’s attention moved on and the incident passed into folklore. In the process of removing it, the giant was dropped, or fell off a wagon, and broke into pieces. ere are various theories regarding the whereabouts of the remnants today, which is perhaps just as well. It seems only fitting that the fate of the Taughannock Giant be shrouded in mystery.

Fishing on the Finger Lakes can be some of the most rewarding freshwater fishing in the United States when done in an informed way. Luckily, there are many fishing charter tours at the disposal of Finger Lakes residents and visitors alike to help fi nd the best spots in the region, along with the best methods for catching different fish species in each location.

Here are a few fishing charters that are sure to help you catch the big one:

CAPTAIN JOHN EVAN ' S FISHING THE FINGER LAKES

A native of the Finger Lakes region, Captain John Evans has more than  years of experience fishing in these lakes. For the past twenty years, he has fished in competitive tournaments, earning numerous top place fi nishes. Evans said that when you choose him as your fishing guide, you get someone “ who knows the water, where the fish are located, and how to catch them.” Evans takes pride in being able to provide fishing tours on Cayuga, Canandaigua, Keuka, and Seneca lakes.

He specializes in fishing for both largemouth and small-mouth bass on a -foot fully rigged bass boat, and teaches the many techniques used in catching them. In recent years, he' s focused tours primarily on Cayuga Lake.

“ Most of my work happens on Cayuga Lake,” Evans said. “ When people ask for my recommendation, that s where I take them. at s where the best fishing is.”

A teacher when he' s not out on the water, Evans offers daily trips from the middle of may into October, depending on the weath. He noted that he is one of the few fishing tours in the area that offers live bait at no additional cost.

Evans said fishing in the Finger Lakes is some of the best bass fishing you' ll fi nd.

“ I' d rival Cayuga Lake against any fresh water lake in the country,” he said. “ We consistently catch small mouth bass over four pounds and sometimes over five, which is an exceptional fish. Next to Lake Erie, you don' t fi nd that kind of fish too many other places.”

To reserve a fishing tour with Fishing the Finger Lakes, contact Evans at --.
