Refrigeration equipment for food storage and for industrial purposes

I

n the space of just 10 years the Italianbased cooling devices manufacturer Zanotti group has more than doubled annual profits, thanks to a successful business plan which was introduced right after the company’s privatisation in 2002. Today the group is ready to exploit the full potential of new markets by extending its international influence as a

global player. The Zanotti group designs, develops, manufactures and tests refrigeration equipment for food storage and for industrial purposes, including cooling devices for transporting foodstuff. As a world leader in the production of air treatment and cooling solutions, the Italian company puts its success down to a number of key factors, including 4

technological improvement and the introduction of customisable solutions for the needs of each customer. One of the company’s key tactics has been to find the best practical application for our cooling devices. It is very important in the refrigeration sector to meet the particular needs of each customer, and, since we mainly work with food makers, this principle

is even more important for our company. Technological research is another strong points. With over 50 years of specialist experience, ZANOTTI is proud to say that its know-how is reflected in products and everything Zanotti produces. The firm was founded as a family-owned company in 1962. From the very beginning the group has developed its potential as a leader in the field of refrigeration, by introducing new and revolutionary solutions such as, for example, the so-called ‘uniblock’ – a completely self-contained and ready-to-use cooling device for small environments. The company soon began to specialise in the production of domestic and nondomestic refrigeration devices for food preservation, and in the meantime its refrigerating systems became bigger and bigger so as to meet the increasing demand of industries. During the 1990s, this trend led to the creation of big multicompressor plants to meet the needs of

large-scale retail trade. In the same period, Zanotti also introduced a new line of products for transports – the socalled ‘transblock’. In the past tenth years, the Italian company has seen enormous growth. Today it employs 650 people distributed over eight plants located all around the world. Many things have changed since 2000. Zanotti has become a public company, and the new management has introduced a revolutionary business plan. Thanks to this new plan, the company’s development process has accelerated: for instance, in 2002 our annual turnover was only €30 million, but in 2012 it had reached € 106 million. Fixed and transport devices It is particularly important for the Zanotti group to offer its customers only the best solutions in terms of quality. That’s way the company has been certified according to the ISO 9001 standard since 1996. Moreover, every single product manufac6

tured by Zanotti in each part of the world is certified according to local parameters for quality, such as the CE parameters in the European countries and the UL parameters in the US. Under the name of KING of COLD, Zanotti produces and develops refrigerating units to cover the needs of small, medium and large-sized cooling necessities, as well as transport refrigeration. The cooling devices made by the Italian company can be subdivided into two categories: fixed and transport devices. The first category includes uniblocks, multicompressor plants, condensing units, racks and refrigeration devices for food preservation, while the other category includes diesel uniblocks, battery drive split

units and others especially designed for trailer devices for the medium to long distance transportation of food. Up to 10 years ago Zanotti only manufactured fixed devices; then Zanotti decided it was time to diversify and started to make transport devices as well. In hindsight, the decision was very wise. Today, in fact, the two lines of production are equally important for the group, since their growth rate is just the same. Moreover, transport devices were the natural completion of what we call ‘the chain of cold’, which includes all kinds of cooling devices from the initial storage process to the final transport itself. Zanotti is proud to give its customers the possibility to choose the cooling devices that mostly meet their needs. And this is definitely its most exclusive feature. So, customer care is an essential feature to Zanotti. The key factor is investing in research that’s because in this sector it’s not important how powerful or well-balanced the cool-

ing device is, but how much the device meets the customer’s requirements. In more than 50 years of activity Zanotti has developed a sort of ‘applied know-how’ for its products. This has only been made possible by the continuous investments in research and development. The R&D Department is big and well-organised and takes care of company’s applied technological improvement. Companies from the Zanotti Group are designing and manufacturing systems for ice rinks, such as the ones in Courmayeur, Italy or in the Arena of Minsk, Belarus. An international concern Zanotti’s plants are not only located in Italy. Apart from our two 7

plants in Italy, which include the head office, Zanotti has a very important facility in Germany and a number of new plants located all around the world. More precisely, in the past two years Zanotti has built four new production plants owing to the fact that the output has increased a lot since 2002. The plants are located in the UK, in Spain, in China and in Brazil. This is just the production sites; the international sales network is much wider. In fact, Zanotti’s sales chain covers something like 70 countries worldwide. Zanotti is currently exporting 86 per cent of its production, which means that foreign markets are fundamental to the company economic growth. The presence in the European markets is strong, since Zanotti has

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

sales points almost everywhere in Europe. Green alternative to traditional refrigeration system The know-how Zanotti acquired over 50 years also concerns the environmental aspects involved since the products are developed to provide low energy consumptions and reduced noise levels; as to meet the current technological trends that aim to contain greenhouse gas emissions. In compliance with the international standards on global warning, as the Protocol stipulated in the Japanese city of Kyoto on December 11, 1997, by more than 180 countries at the COP3 conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Changes (UNFCCC) and which became effective in 2005, Zanotti implemented major changes to the manufacture its products. Currently, Zanotti produces units operating with ecological gases such as propane, propylene, ammonia and CO2. These

units are widely used in all sectors of the food industry. Zanotti will continue to invest large sums of money every year to research new technologies that can reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere. Under the energy saving concept, was created the BESTCOP速 technology. It is applied on the motorized condensing units that are manufactured by Zanotti to improve the efficiency and energy consumption levels of the cooling equipment. This basically can be translated into energy savings (from 15 to 20% depending on the different environmental conditions). Zanotti Spa developed the first Italian magnetic cooling at room temperature prototype, the only one of its kind worldwide, in collaboration with the TEC division of the Mechanical Engineering, Energetic, Production, Transportation and Mathematical Models Dept. (DIME) of the University of Genoa. This enabled 8

Zanotti to acquire the basic elements needed to achieve this technology and to apply it by implementing a one of a kind cooling unit. This innovative achievement represents the foundation for the potential engineering development of the product in the future; always seeking better performances and applications that are competitive on the market. The attention devoted to customers and the flexibility of the products are essential characteristics for Zanotti: investing in Research and Development to better meet customer demand by providing more convenient solutions in terms of energy savings and reliability of use is a priority.

NEW SIDEL RIGHTWEIGHT™ PET WATER BOTTLE RESULTS IN LESS WEIGHT AND GREAT CONSUMER EXPERIENCE

S

idel has introduced a new 0.5 litre PET bottle for still water called RightWeight™, which can result in significantly less weight while maintaining or increasing bottle performance, without compromising on product quality, while still maintaining a great consumer experience.

The new RightWeight bottle weighs just 7.95 grams yet offers topload performance of 33 kilograms without nitrogen dosing, using standard 26/22 caps. The increased resistance of the RightWeight bottle helps eliminate the ‘over squeeze’ issue often experienced by end consumers when using ultra-light bottles, which

can result in the spilling of contents unintentionally. Increased resistance also makes it easier for consumers to unscrew the cap and open the bottle. In addition, the stronger resistance means the RightWeight bottle is more likely to travel across the supply chain and retain its original attractive appearance when it is placed on a

Sidel’s new RightWeight™ 0.5 litre bottle for still water weighs just 7.95 grams, yet offers a superior consumer experience and a top-load performance of 33 kilograms, without the need for nitrogen dosing, using standard 26/22 closures. The bottle weighs 34% less than the average commercial bottle and achieves 32% more top-load performance than the lightest commercial bottle, resulting in cost savings of up to EUR 1.75 million per year, according to Sidel data. 10

supermarket shelf in front of the consumer. “Beverage producers are increasingly striving to unlock the value of a PET bottle across their entire supply chain, from concept to consumer,” explains Christophe Bunel, Head of Packaging Care & Development at Sidel. “To achieve this, a bottle must be lighter, of course, but also stay attractive, protect the beverage and ensure high consumer satisfaction. At Sidel we call this ‘rightweighting’. It’s no longer about simply reducing the plastic content. Our new RightWeight bottle is designed to reduce bottle weight, and also save energy during production, improve bottle performance across the supply chain, without compromising on product quality, and result in a far better consumer experience for such a light bottle.” Compared with an average of 12 grams for commercial 0.5 litre water bottles available on the market today, the 7.95 gram bottle represents 34% less weight than the average com-

mercial bottle. It also achieves 32% more top-load performance than the lightest commercial bottle, resulting in raw-material cost savings of up to EUR 1.75 million per year, according to Sidel data. The blowing pressure for the bottle is also just 20 bars. In many cases the bottles can match the top-load performance of nitrogen-assisted ultra-lightweight bottles, however without the use of nitrogen, leading to further cost and energy savings. “Typically the goal is to reach 30 kg or more top-load performance to ensure a bottle can withstand the rigours of the supply chain,” adds Bunel. “At this weight most ultralightweight bottles in the market have to achieve this by using nitrogen. The RightWeight bottles can achieve above this without using nitrogen.” For the past year Sidel’s packaging experts analysed and tested many different bottle designs. They then carried out numerous computer simulations followed by real-world physical tests 11

to achieve the perfect geometrical solution for an optimum balance between less weight and strong performance. A key success enabler was the complete redesign and optimisation of the preform done internally by the Sidel team. Part of this new preform design was an evolution of the standard 26/22 neck finish, which has been re-designed to save an extra 15% of weight, while maintaining compatibility with existing standard 26/22 caps. The new RightWeight bottle can therefore be adapted easily to existing production lines that use standard cap formats. Design elements can be adapted for existing or new commercial bottle designs as needed. Accompanying Sidel RightWeight moulds and line conversions can ensure production lines fully unlock the benefits of the new bottle designs. The bottle can be used for all Sidel PET packaging solutions and output speeds for still water, including the new Sidel Matrix™ system for liquid packaging.

Air cooled rotary vane technology replaces screw and liquid ring vacuum pumps

Jakarta is a little South of the equator, the Indonesian climate is tropical. Water cooling is problematic because of the high ambient temperature, the performance of liquid ring pumps is strongly reduced in terms of capacity and vacuum level. In order to succeed, air cooled machines must be specifically designed to operate in hot climate. Also the choice of screw vacuum pumps failed. The ultimate solution were two UV50 vacuum pumps, commissioned in March 2010.

T

he production of cans is a clean application of vacuum. Nowadays, most can plants have centralized vacuum. Capacities are high, in this case we consider 6.000 m3/h [3536 cfm]. The unexperienced choice frequently falls on large liquid ring vacuum pumps, initially cheap to buy, but expensive to operate. These pumps come without motor, electrical- and power-panel are usually separate and cooling water circuit must be tailor-made for every single factory. Cooling towers and water treatment devices are additional mandatory compo-

nents. After placing water pipelines, cooling tower, cement foundation for the pump body, electrical wiring and chemical monitoring, pH value adapting, finally the liquid ring system can operate. Large liquid ring pumps start running continuously 24/7, but 18

with 35째C [95째F] ambient temperature their nominal capacity is reduced by 65%. Expensive to install and to run, not satisfactory in terms of efficiency. Running cost analysis over years identifies such a vacuum system as major expense. Cooling water

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

circuits, heat exchange devices and water flow in pipelines, all loose in performance. The search starts to find an air cooled solution. The low knowledge about vacuum, its confusion with “simply the opposite of compressed air” sometimes leads to wrong choices, just to abandon the huge costs caused by the liquid ring vacuum pump system. And that is how screw pumps are installed, unfortunately the manufactures themselves have little know-how about vacuum, to the point that most screw vacuum pumps are delivered with an oil pump to make the lubricant circulate, although vacuum itself could manage. The missing active sealing on screws, the impossible repair of the air ends, their forced replacement (usually at high cost) and the missing serious consideration of tropical climate circumstances for the electrical motor reliability, cause considerable troubles. The lack of vacuum in a can production site has drastic consequences, sometimes there is no time to fix, simply new pumps are added. This screw

pumps scenario, often ending with water cooling, due to insufficient heat exchange capability, does not represent an improvement, compared to the previous situation with liquid ring pumps. The described sequence is quite popular, vacuum is a “secondary energy”, just a facility. But the repeated unsuccess motivates to contact colleagues, who faced similar circumstances. Some engineers will never admit their incompetence, others will hunt a long term solution. Target is to have always sufficient vacuum-capacity and -level in the production, better if air cooled and mandatory reliable and durable. Here is where Pneumofore appears. With hundreds of centralized vacuum systems on five continents, we collected experiences over more than 85 years. In this specific case of United Can, the engineers of Pneumofore analyzed the requirements and, after long discussions, two UV50 HC were delivered, obviously air cooled but specifically for Hot Climate (HC), with a larger sized motor of 110 kW each and a dedicated heat 19

exchanger with proportionally dimensioned fan. One of the two pumps is further equipped with a variable speed (VS) device of ABB, which keeps the precise vacuum level in production, covering all the fluctuations of vacuum need, that may appear. The vacuum level was improved from 450 mbar(a) [16,6 inHg V] to 250 mbar(a) [22,5 inHg V], having the UV50 HC VS unit running at 35 Hz, which is the lowest possible frequency, as the range goes up to 60 Hz. Like many other UV pumps near the equator, these two are meant to run continuously for the next few decades, with low power consumption, little need of maintenance, simply with the lowest Life Cycle Cost.

Towards the end of the production cycle

Recycling: bottle washing machine.

At high production bottling rates, today must be a high degree of specialization of the related processes. The washing of recycled bottles, for example, is increasingly performed with technologically advanced machines.

I

n the beverage industry, the automatic washing of recycled bottles has now reached a high level of specialization. In this context, works AKOMAG, company located in Soragna (PR), able to offer a varied production, which includes bottle washing machine, rinsing machine, sterilizers for glass or PET

Returnable bottles, nicer, stronger, longer…

For beer, soft drink and mineral water manufacturers, the appearance of glass bottles is paramount wherever the drink is served: in bars, restaurants and stores. The look of bottles impacts the brand image and its commercial performance. Products developed by Arkema, Kercoat® and Opticoat®, dedicated in the protection of glass bottles, address this issue, and help bottlers extend the lifetime of their bottle fleet, with significant savings as a result. Explanations by Julien Verron, Global Business Manager Glass Coatings for Returnable bottles at Arkema.

Inline measurement of cold wortProcess analysis in breweries

W

hile in the brewhouse of a brewery the wort is produced from malt, water and hops, the preparation of the wort for the following fermentation is performed in the downstream fermenting room. In order to avoid building beerspoiling microorganisms, the hot wort must achieve the pitching temperature as soon as possible. Typically, the hot wort will be cooled down to 7 to 9째C so that the yeast can fer-

ment efficiently. Most of the breweries use closed cooling systems. A plate heat exchanger (plate cooler) consisting of thin, closely spaced metal plates ensures the rapid cooling. They are alternatively passed through wort and cooling water. This process causes a cold break with tiny particles in the first plain wort. The turbidity has an influence on the velocity of fermentation and maturation, because particles attach themselves to the yeast cells that become smeared. Repeated use of yeast, 34

the cold break will be removed to avoid an increasing smearing. In addition, the velocity of fermentation depends on the oxygen content in the wort. The ventilation of the cold wort for increasing yeast occurs only once during the entire beer production with a targeted oxidation. Sterile air is atomized finely and mixed with cold wort in a turbulent manner. The oxygen consumption is caused by the yeast and does not influence the wort quality. When the cold wort

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

leaves the cooling chamber, the actual beer production with fermentation, maturation and filtration is taking place. Before starting this process, an inline measurement of cold wort concentration is offered for ensuring process safety and optimal wort quality. In addition, the inline measurement provides a reliable wort-water-separation in case of rinsing processes. In order to cope with these tasks, the Colbitzer Heidebrauerei decided to use the inline measuring sys-

tem called LiquiSonic® Plato manufactured by the company SensoTech. In this case, an immersion type sensor with Varivent connection was installed after the cooler directly in a DN50 pipe by meeting the requirements of hygienic and bypass-free installation. (picture 1) “Before mixing the wort with yeast („pitching“), it is important to check the original gravity content again due to quality reasons. If this is ensured, the beer production can run in the ferment-

LiquiSonic® Plato measuring point in the cooling chamber of the Colbitzer Heidebrauerei 35

ing room. Additionally, valuable liter of beer can be gained by detecting an overdosing, explains Brew Master, Birgit Diesing. “But also the exact phase separation of first and last running is mandatory.” The immersion type sensor of the LiquiSonic® Plato system is completely made of stainless steel and is working maintenance-free for a long period. A special highly efficient technology provides reliable measuring values even at high contents of gas bubbles. The determination of concentration is based on the sonic velocity measurement that guarantees a precise, drift- and failure-free measurement. With the help of a proven mathematic model, it is possible to calculate precisely the wort concentration resulting from the value of sonic velocity. The controller included in the system performs the calculation. Controller and sensor are connected via a bus cable, whereas the controller can handle up to four sensors and so four

measuring points can be connected. Further inline measurements of original gravity are possible, for example, at the lauter tun, wort boiler, filter or filler. (picture 2) The controller visualizes the measuring data and is used for making settings and configurations done by the user. The TFT color display with high contrast enables an intuitive and clearly structured menu navigation. Calibration can also be performed, even by remote access to the controller via modem or Internet. This remote access option allows the user to monitor and configure the system

from everywhere. The controller can manage up to 256 types of beer with the appropriate calculation models. For each type of beer, it is possible to define a tolerance range with displaying an alarm in case of exceeding the limits. When connecting the controller to the PCS, measures can be taken afterwards. Process trends can be monitored with the trend view provided by the device. It is connected to data log that stores up to 15,000 datasets. Therefore, processes and measuring values are documented traceably and can be 36

analyzed afterwards. The Colbitzer Heidebrauerei installed a controller with a stainless steel housing. “Not only the high measuring accuracy of ± 0.05 °Pl and the reliability of LiquiSonic® Plato convinced us, but also the user friendliness. After installation of the sensor, the controller showed immediately the actual wort concentration. We are so satisfied that we decided to install further measuring points, for example, at the filler for monitoring and controlling the phase separation“, emphasizes Birgit Diesing.

Save time with the automatic blank magazine Easy-Load

C

ompanies operating in the Food & Beverage sector have to face a more and more competitive market and are required to offer a constantly diversified range of products, in order to meet the consumer’s disparate exigencies. Therefore, the solutions implemented by packaging machine manufacturers are expected to be innovative, cost-effective, efficient, sustainable and able to realize appealing packages. Smiflexi range of automatic packers provides the end user all the technical and functional specifications required to manage production cycles efficiently and economically and to enable quick switch from one format to another. Among the new opportunities offered by Smiflexi division there is the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, an accessory device (available both for

the wrap-around case packers of the WP series and the heat-shrinkwrappers of the SK series) which features considerable advantages from an operating and functional point of view. With Easy-Load the operator can easily load cardboard blanks - stacked horizontally in uniform groups - because the feeding belt of the magazine is posi38

toned at the same working height as the packer’s infeed belt, rather than under it. The innovative solution devised by SMI eliminates the disadvantages related to the manual loading of the cardboard blanks magazine, which force the operator to bend his/her body continuously to place the blanks in the bottom part of the machine. The op-

erator just places the cardboard blank stacks on the outermost roller conveyor so that the automatic control system can perform all the subsequent steps. Thanks to specific sensors, the layout and feed of the cardboard blanks on the conveyor belts fitted with the motorized roller and their loading into the packer’s magazine is, in fact, fully automated. Moreover, with the innovative Easy-Load system, even the unloading of the cardboard blanks is performed automatically, after processing a certain format, through a series of steps carried out in reverse order as compared to the loading steps. Fridge packs realized by SMI wrap-around packers The technology used in the Easy-Load magazine also features the great advantage of ensur-

ing fluid and constant picking operations with a wide range of cardboard blanks having a thickness between 0.5 mm and 5 mm Thanks to the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP are able to meet multiple exigencies: they can pack different types of products (glass, PET, cans, etc.) in different kinds of containers, of large or small size: kraftpaper boxes, microwave or corrugated cardboard boxes. Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP series can pack bottles and cans in cardboard boxes, called Fridge Packs, specifically designed to fit into the limited space offered by fridge compartments. Thanks to an innovative design, a prescored breakaway panel allows the consumer to conveniently take out

40

of the package just the bottle or can he actually needs. The box thus becomes a dispenser of the products included in the packs. The technology used in the Smiflexi “Easy-Load” magazine features the great advantage of using Kraft-paper with a wrap-around packer. Kraft paper ensures a solid packaging, despite its reduced thickness. The polish, white surface of kraft paper is an optimal solution, ensuring excellent printability and appealing graphics, in order to draw the customer’s attention on the products displayed on the shelves at the sales outlets.

More function, less waste

K

uraray Co. Ltd. has been manufacturing and marketing ethylene vinyl-alcohol copolymers (EVOH) under the name EVAL™ since 1972, and remains the world leader in EVOH production and market development. William Reay, global marketing manager for EVAL Europe, talks to Food Processing about all EVOH has to offer. Can you tell us a bit about the company? William Reay: Kuraray was founded in Japan in 1926, and quickly

expanded from plastic rayon textile fibres into speciality chemicals and polymers. We are the world’s largest producer of VAM [vinyl acetate monomer] derivatives, including PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) and EVOH (ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers).

44

How can EVAL EVOH help brand-owners and producers reduce their carbon footprint? By reducing packaging, and avoiding waste. EVAL EVOH is all about finding the perfect balance between function and minimal amounts of materials. EVAL EVOH has performance against oxygen gas that is 10,000 times better than LDPE [low-density polyethylene]. In other words, 1mm of EVAL gives the same protection as a 10m-thick wall of LDPE. We thus need

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

an EVAL layer thickness of just a few microns to add enough barrier function to a coextruded structure. Optimising the amount of packaging materials helps reduce the carbon footprint of a product. But, it is the barrier function that plays the most important role by prolonging shelf life and avoiding waste; the contents of a package usually have a much greater environmental impact than the packaging materials in which they are sold. It not only makes good environmental sense, but good economic sense as well. Are the materials recyclable or recoverable? Both. Multilayer structures including EVAL™

are routinely ground up and reused as a structural layer in multilayer barrier plastic bottles, sheet and trays. EVAL will not disrupt polyolefin recycling streams, either online or post-consumer. Because EVAL is a plastic, it provides good energy recovery, and emits only water vapour and CO2 – no toxic residue, no metal, no chlorine. Because there isn’t much EVAL in the structure to begin with, even these emissions are quite small, especially when compared with the important benefits of avoiding waste. In the future, EVAL itself may be made from renewable sources that don’t interrupt food supply chains. 46

Stand-up pouches are increasingly being used for ready meals. Are your solutions microwave-safe? Absolutely. Stand-up pouches are a good example of optimised packaging, using relatively small amounts of material to protect food until it can be consumed. The microns of EVAL provide barrier properties and shelf-life extension to the entire structure. EVAL is a transparent plastic – no problem for microwave ovens. It can also be used for energy-efficient aseptic filling processes, and is compatible with metal detectors during processing. How can EVAL reduce

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

waste and protect food? Prolonging shelf life is an important way to avoid waste. It adds valuable time to the processing and distribution process, while keeping the contents fresh with their vitamins and aroma intact. Our partners usually come to us for optimised oxygen gas barrier, but EVAL also keeps aromas inside the package and effectively blocks outside odours, grease and contamination. A fast growing example of the benefit of this is the EVAL solution against MOSH/ MOAH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons/

mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) migration. Mineral oils that are present in recycled cartonboard can easily migrate and accumulate in certain foods, which can cause health problems when ingested. The quick answer from the market has been to move to virgin paperboard, but this may not be sustainable, and doesn’t protect against migration from the outer carton boxes used for transport and storage. EVAL provides a proven barrier against MOSH/MOAH in thickness as thin as 4μm – once again, effective protection with only very small amounts of material. Better yet, our European Technical Centre can scientifically simulate the amount of MOSH/MOAH migration of a given structure, to show that it is

47

within ever stricter food safety regulation. What properties do EVAL products have that can help influence consumer decisions? As a transparent plastic material, EVAL is versatile, and can be used in optimised coextruded structures for film, bagin-box, pouches, trays, cups, tubes, bottles – even flexitainers and automotive fuel tanks. It can be coated or laminated onto cartonboard and paper, and even used in barrier in-mould labels and co-injected cups and closures. Very thin flexible layers can be laminated to renewable materials like paper or cartonboard, giving them much-needed barrier function. Thanks to its transparency, the product can be made attractively visible to the consumer. But maybe the best way to influence customer decisions is to pass on savings due to optimised packaging and transport, and produce less waste throughout the processing and distribution stream.

rdagh Group has developed an ultra-lightweight 275ml bottle for Beck’s and Beck’s Blue , reducing the original from 185gms to 165gms. The 11 per cent weight reduction on 130 million bottles will save 2,642 tonnes of glass, the equivalent weight of over 200 modern double decker buses. The new lighter bottle will mean 1,940 tonnes of CO2 are removed from the manufacturing process at Ardagh’s glass plant in Nienburg, Germany, where the bottles were produced. Ardagh’s use of advanced analytical design tools enabled the 20g per bottle weight reduc-

tion to be achieved whilst maintaining the strength of the original container. Designers were also able to provide additional value through the incorporation of a label panel, whilst retaining the outline bottle shape and neck profile of the previous design. Fabienne Rollot, marketing director, at Beck’s Western Europe, said: “Beck’s is a pioneering brand at the forefront of independent thinking, always looking for ways to innovate. This change is just one of the ways in which we are improving our environmental performance and making our iconic 48

green bottles even greener.” Inge Plochaet, president, at AB InBev UK & Ireland, said: “The lighter Beck’s bottles will make a tangible contribution to this effort and represent another significant step towards realising our ambition to become the Best Beer Company in a Better World.”

P.E.T. ENGINEERING: A YEAR OF GROWTH INCREASED TURNOVER, IMPORTANT AWARDS AND NEW RECRUITMENTS: THAT IS HOW AN SME GROWS

S

an Vendemiano, 4th March 2014 P.E.T. Engineering, specialized in the design and manufacturing of PET containers, closed an extremely positive 2013 with an increase in turnover of 45% compared to the previous year, and a 15% EBITDA. Based in San Vendemiano (TV) and founded in 1999 by Moreno Barel, the Company is the sole point of reference for all beverage packaging requirements of the main international brands: PepsiCo, Nestlé Waters, Granarolo, Parmalat, Baltika, Efes, Ab Inbev, Carlsberg, Ferrero, to name but a few. This success has been prompted once again by foreign markets, where the Treviso-based Company generates approximately 82% of its total

sales, 70.58% of which comes from the outside the UE, and in particular from the Russian Federation. Moreno Barel, C.E.O. of P.E.T. Engineering, states that these export results derive from “a service capable of combining design and manufacturing, innovation and Made-in-Italy, always greatly appreciated across the border. As well as being a year of achievements in terms of orders

CHILLED NFC JUICES: THE BERTUZZI APPROACH

he market of fruit juice is developing quite rapidly  and the share of NFC juices is considerably increasing because of their high quality. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth potential. Of particular importance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are prepared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops  shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grapefruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orange-pineapple, carrot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popular. cessing fresh fruit into chilled juices are: üOptimization of flow of fruit/juice üOptimization of characteristics of process equipment üOptimization of processing cycles in order to: 1. Decrease processing times 2. Minimize oxidation of the juice 3. Keep high organolectic characteristics üOptimize CIP system to control the microbiology of the juice. Some of the machines used for the application are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance: üDedicated citrus juice extractors (orange, lemons, grapefruit), in order

to minimize the essential oil content in the juice and assure a good control of the pulp. üDeshellers and dedicated presses for pomegranate to produce cloudy or clear juice which importance is considerably increasing for the beneficial health characteristics. üDedicated pineapple juicing in order to obtain high quality juice only from the edible part of the fruit without contamination with the peel. These are some examples but few. Extractors for juice/ puree can be provided for apples, carrots, pears, passion fruit, banana, beets, mango, spinach, asparagus, berries, hawthorns, guava etc. The

obtained juice is immediately (blended or not) slightly pasteurized (65-70°C) and chilled before filling. All these examples of equipment have been designed, built and put in operation by Bertuzzi Food Processing Srl, an Italian Company that operates in this field since 1936 and that supplies plants and machines to process fruit and vegetables to produce juice, concentrates, baby food, jam, readymade drinks etc…

WMM: gravity filling monoblock unit

MM is a gravity filling monoblock unit with net-weight control system and container capper for liquid, dense or foamy products. Various models are available to cover a speed range from 120 bpm to 500 bpm. The system is able to work with food liquids such as oil, dairy products (milk, yogurt…), beverages or sauces (ketchup, mayonnaise…), or home & personal care products, filling different types of containers (glass or plastic bottles, HDPE, PET). WMM is made

entirely of stainless steel 316 L and can be equipped with HEPA filters for internal air recycling and an automatic internal washing system. Just like every other machine produced by AcmaVolpak, it is designed to process liquids with the total guarantee of cleanliness and hygiene: during the filling phase, there is no contact between the nozzle and the container, while sealed guards ensure safe internal washing processes. The electronic filling system is equipped with independent net-weight control modules and works with “no bottle /

56

no fill” logic, thus avoiding wasted product. Weighing precision is also guaranteed whatever the temperature and viscosity variables of the product involved. For products of particularly dense or foamy consistency, the VLS system (Virtual level system) guarantees constant product flow from the tank outlet. The system works with “press – vacuum” logic: for rather dense or creamy products, the content level in the tank is virtually adjusted, to set the product flow through the filling valves. For foamy products, the liquid is kept in

suspension so that the foam does not affect the filling performances. Volpak SC Series With the SC series, Volpak presents the new range of HFFS machines with continuous motion technology doubling the production rates. The Volpak SC series is based on two platforms, for pouches up to 500ml and 1500ml capacity, that cover the needs of the world-wide market for flexible pouches. With the new SC series customers can double their

production capacity benefiting from important savings in energy, maintenance, packaging cost and space. The machine also uses a linear pouch forming module, guaranteeing the seal integrity and quality of the pouches produced and a continuous carrousel, featuring a modular build concept, equipped with different turrets for pouch opening, filling, capping and top sealing, depending on project configuration. The single fill station and the gentle

57

handling of the pouches are key to optimize the filling conditions for any type of product. Finally, the top seal turret allows operating in optimum conditions, and is designed to accommodate pouches with or without caps. SC is available in two versions, depending on the format and volume of the pouches and in many configurations: for liquid products with or without reclosable caps and for dry products with or without re-closable zippers.

Prazdroj starts trial run of PET bottling line

P

lzeňský Prazdroj has started a trial run of its new PET bottling line. With a maximum output of 18,000 bottles per hour, the line is Plzeňský Prazdroj’s biggest one–off investment over the last five years. The value of the line and the overall technical design is approx. CZK 150 million. The company’s offer of PET–packaged beer includes the brands Velkopopovický Kozel, Primus and Klasik. Last months saw more than thirty trucks bringing in components for the new line and Prazdroj’s central packaging hall bustling with preparations for the installation. The so far unbuilt area of the complex was used for civil modifications and utility connections, including water and other process fluid distribution systems, beer piping and a number of technical sundries, the finishing touches to an investment of about 150 60

million Czech Crowns. „We have our consumers at heart, and want to ensure we meet their needs. In response to their changing preferences and growing demand for convenient packaging, we are putting into operation a new plastic packaging line as part of our long–term investments in the development of our business. Our brewmasters make traditional Czech beers, and our goal is to sustainably offer consumers the highest quality of both our traditional products and the new packaging they come in. Our consumers deserve the best beer experience, and we are committed to delivering it to them,“ says Douglas Brodman, Plzeňský Prazdroj’s CEO.

MINIMOTOR: ONE MILLION MOTORS FOR FORTY YEARS OF SUCCESS MINI MOTOR “STARTS AGAIN FROM ONE MILLION”. On the eve of its 40th anniversary, the Emilia-based company has just produced its one millionth geared motor.

T

he news came just a few days ago: the Mini Motor production department rolled out the first geared motor with a six-zero code. Company founder Gianfranco Franceschini, along with his children Andrea, Lorella and Marco – all employed in the family company – received with welldeserved satisfaction the news of a production goal that in the constant daily flow of work came almost by surprise. The first instinctive reaction is to correlate the number 1,000,000 with the years of activity of Mini Motor, which began business in 1974: the Emilia-based company has thus produced one million geared motors on the eve of its fortieth anniversary.

Apart from the simple numerical data, certainly significant for a smallmedium sized company, this result inevitably leads us to reflect on the business values that have made it possible to achieve. Values that still today are identified in the quality of construction that starts with the choice of materials, in the precision that ensures reliable operation of the geared motors over time, and in the efficiency that makes it possible to achieve the best service thanks to excellent performance features combined with low consumption. Added to these values, which are effectively illustrated in the recently released “Mini Motor corporate video”, is a fourth that responds to the concept of customisation. Andrea 62

Franceschini, Mini Motor export manager, stated in this regard that the main objective of Mini Motor – as well as the main reason for its decades of success in Italy and abroad – has always been supplying tailor-made products able to satisfy special requirements in terms of dimensions, the severity of the application, and extreme temperature conditions; in short, anything that goes beyond the standard offer of the market. SO WE WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY OF THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY SEASON TO EXTEND “A MILLION BEST WISHES” TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS FOR A POSITIVE 2014 TOGETHER WITH MINI MOTOR.

Key Technology Introduces the VitiSort™ Wine Grape Sorter for MOG Removal

K

ey Technology introduces VitiSort™, a new sorter designed for red wine grapes. This compact system, which combines a patent-pending mechanical MOG (material other than grape) removal shaker and optical sorting with an integral juice recovery system, offers world-class sorting performance at a unique level of affordability. As the lowest cost optical sorting system on the market, VitiSort helps wineries improve their product quality while redirecting labor to other tasks. Ideal for wineries producing 5,000 to 50,000 cases per year, VitiSort sorts up to 5 tons (4.5 metric tons) of red grapes per hour. The system removes any unwanted objects such as insects, skins, raisins, shot berries, stem jacks, petioles, leaves, and other MOG from the product flow, which enables the

winery to better control the quality of must going to their fermentation tanks. Key conducted several successful full-season field trials with wineries in various growing regions in North America, Europe, and Australia to verify the effectiveness of VitiSort. Pepper Bridge Winery and Chateau Ste. Michelle are among the wineries that have used VitiSort for more than one vintage. “With its MOG shaker and optical sorter combined, VitiSort 64

is very effective at improving the quality of our must. If it’s not removed, MOG will release a bitterness – a harsh tannin – to the wine. Removing the non-grape attributes like this will improve the quality of our wine,” said Jean-François Pellet, Winemaker at Pepper Bridge Winery. “Thanks to this system, we’re able to receive, sort, and crush 3 12 tons of grapes per hour with only four workers. One is overseeing the operation, one is feeding product to the system,

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

and two are sorting out leaves before the destemmer. It’s hard to say how many people we would need without VitiSort – maybe 15 or 20, I’m not sure – but it’s virtually impossible to achieve this high level of MOG removal at the volume we’re doing with manual labor.” Ray McKee, the Red Winemaker for Chateau Ste. Michelle added, “With Key’s VitiSort, we’re removing 99.9 percent of the MOG while sorting 4 to 5 tons of grapes per hour with two and a half workers. The effectiveness of the technology allows us to use machine-picked grapes and put only berries and pure juice into fermentation. It gives us exceptional quality control to end up with a very rich and dense wine that doesn’t have the tannin from green stems and leaves.” The stainless steel VitiSort is compact and mobile, designed to easily roll into position under the destemmer so fruit automatically flows from one machine to the other. The two-stage VitiSort features a mechanical MOG removal system followed

by an optical sorter. First, a vibratory conveyor gently shakes the grapes to separate MOG, which falls through uniquely designed slots in the shaker’s screen, along with juices. MOG is accumulated on a sloped surface for easy disposal, while the juices are recovered for reintroduction to the must. Singulated grapes freefall from the end of the vibratory conveyor into the sorter, presenting a “sheet” of product that allows a camera to inspect each grape. A specially designed drip tray keeps juice out of the camera line-of-sight. The sorter quickly analyses the images, comparing each object to previously defined accept/reject standards. When unwanted objects are identified, the sorter activates the ejector system, which is made up of a series of air jets that span the width of the system. While still air-borne, the air jets pinpoint MOG to reject and remove it from the product stream. Grapes are discharged from the sorter into a trough or screw conveyor for delivery to the fermentation 65

tank. “The MOG shaker is very effective at removing insects and shot berries, which reduces the load on the optical sorter and improves its performance. The optical sorter takes out stem jacks and other MOG,” added Pellet. “It’s a very simple, gravity-fed system. Since it has no belts, it’s easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to maintain.” Compared to sorters that feature horizontal belts to inspect product on a horizontal plane, Key’s VitiSort inspects product on a vertical plane to dramatically simplify the operation while achieving the same results. VitiSort offers a smaller footprint, improved sanitation with the elimination of belts, gentle handling with fewer transitions, and a new level of affordability. Compared to manual inspection, VitiSort improves the consistency of MOG removal to better control the quality of the must going to fermentation tanks, while reducing labor costs. VitiSort can do the work of 8 to 12 people or more. The yield loss associated with VitiSort is only 2 to 4

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

OG GY Y T E C H N O LL O

percent, depending on the grape variety and the effectiveness of the destemmer. Key designed ease of use into every aspect of VitiSort. A color touchscreen control panel features a graphical user interface where the winemaker can adjust the sort parameters to remove more or less MOG to meet his exact needs.

Product settings can be stored and retrieved. Open access to the MOG collection area eases its removal while stainless steel construction eases sanitation. VitiSort can function alone with the destemmer or combined with Key’s Grape Receiving and Inspection Platform (GRIP) upstream of the destemmer. VitiSort

66

builds off Key’s 65 years as an innovative designer of world-class food processing equipment and expertise in sorting and vibratory conveying. VitiSort is based on Key’s sixth generation sorting technology, which has been field-proven at thousands of demanding food processing plants around the world.

New creations keep the markets moving: Whether innovative non-alcoholic malt drinks, fruit juice drinks enriched with beta-glucan, which are supposed to have a positive health effect on the heart, new ginger drink creations or drinks coloured pink with the help of the purple sweet potato, there are hardly any limits to the imagination and the consumer soon determines the success or failure of the products. nized for the third time together with the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei (Brewery Research and Training Institute) the day before the exhibition. Jim Koch, founder and Managing Director of the Boston Beer Company, which brews the famous Samuel Adams, will open the exhibition in BrauBeviale’s stylish new forum at the heart of exhibition activity. Many other VIPs from the international brewing scene will speak here, including Charlie Papazian, President of the US Brewers Association and initiator of the World Beer Cup, and Dr. Marc Rauschmann, Managing Director of the Frankfurt firm, BraufactuM. Successful new packaging ideas – at BrauBeviale too The rule for all beverage segments: the product and package should always form one unit to ensure the right communication with the consumer at the Point of Sale. Particularly beverage packages are

highly innovative. For example, the package of an African beer brand is intended to convey quality, innovation and creativity at the same time. The beer is now coming onto the market in a 100 per cent recyclable can, which is the first container of this kind in Africa. A schnapps, for example, also plays on tradition and innovation and is offered in bottling jars as a reminder of the Prohibition period. The exhibition is also geared to innovative packaging. At the BrauBeviale Forum – supported by wellknown partners from the sector – presentations, panel discussions 77

or talks on beverage packaging design, packaging innovations and PET recycling invite visitors to stay, listen or join in the discussions. A welcome guest again in 2014 is the international competition for the German Packaging Award. The most innovative solutions from the over 200 entries expected for labels, closures and other packaging ancillaries, displays, sales packaging, promotion packaging, transport packaging, logistics packaging and packaging machinery will receive awards at BrauBeviale. For the first time the exhibition presents the PETnology concept “connecting comPETence” with the PETarena and Packaging Wall of Excellence, where companies present their diverse spectrum of PET products and services. The PETarena is also the place to go for packaging developers. The event starts with the two-day international PETnology Congress, which takes place immediately before the exhibition.
