he market is showing increasing appreciation for ACMAVOLPAK’s solutions dedicated to tea, manufactured and marketed by the brand Tecnomeccanica: while Modula, the most recent innovation of 2014, is already in operation at a customer’s facility, ACMAVOLPAK has received a large order of T2 Tecnomeccanica has received a large order amounting to ten machines from a very important South American player. Following the example of other important “big names” in the industry, Tecnomeccanica’s customer has decided to implement and modernize its production by integrating a series of T2, single chamber teabag machines. Each unit is equipped with a cartoning system and heat-sealed external bag, which makes it a complete line supporting the entire packaging process, both primary and secondary. However, T2 is also renowned for being the first full leaf tea packaging machine; the recent installation in Saudi Arabia testifies to the reputation of ACMAVOLPAK and the strong demand of full leaf tea, highly appreciated by traditionalist tea lovers. T2 full leaf tea bag is different from “standard” pyramid bags as it can be stacked inside the box; this ensures a better presentation of the product in exclusive packaging. Great innovations also for T4 Modula, ACMAVOLPAK’s double chamber “knotted” packaging solution: the first unit has recently been installed at an international top player’s facility. Introduced to the public on the occasion of the latest edition of Interpack, T4 ensures a higher level of flavour and fragrance of the product. In addition to its performance in line with its category (T4 can package up to 250 bags per minute),

8 Drink Technology Magazine

this new solution by ACMAVOLPAK is particularly advanced in terms of sustainability and materials saving. The tea bag packaged by T4 is defined “the most beautiful in the world”: produced in non heat-sealed filter paper, it is 100% biodegradable and is sealed without using any metal staple in order to better preserve the genuineness of its content; an octagonal tag is placed on the front of the bag, while the string is attached underneath. These features make the tea bag aesthetically more pleasant and optimise brand visibility, thus supporting the customer’s marketing strategies. Also in this case, the exclusivity of bags is ensured: the string does not overlap with the label and there are no holes on the label, unlike standard bags currently in use.

For beer, soft drink and mineral water manufacturers, the appearance of glass bottles is paramount wherever the drink is served: in bars, restaurants and stores. The look of bottles impacts the brand image and its commercial performance. Products developed by Arkema, Kercoat® and Opticoat®, dedicated in the protection of glass bottles, address this issue, and help bottlers extend the lifetime of their bottle fleet, with significant savings as a result. Explanations by Julien Verron, Global Business Manager Glass Coatings for Returnable bottles at Arkema.

D

RINK: What does your range of coatings for glass bottles entail? Julien Verron - Arkema offers a unique expertise in the returnable glass bottle coating market with two complementary product ranges: Kercoat®, which protects the bottles and keeps them looking new for longer, and Opticoat®, which masks the scuffing and white rings that build up on bottles every cycle of use. Building on our 30 years’ experience in glass coatings, we were the first to launch this innovative solution some ten years ago. We noticed that, after a number of cycles of use, re-

turnable bottles were becoming more fragile and losing their appeal to consumers. By ensuring that bottles retain an attractive look for a longer period of time, our products contribute to maintaining a positive impact on the buying act of final consumers. D - Your solutions bank on the look of bottles, so aren’t they marketing products? J.V - Marketing experts know very well that the look of a bottle is very important to seduce consumers. Nowadays, with the growing number of cycles for returnable bottles, scuffing caused by repeated contact between bottles, in particular during filling and trans-

The new generation of a high-capacity packaging system:

T

o reliably protect palletised beverage products against transport stress, dirt, moisture and tampering, the BEUMER Group, based in Beckum, Germany, offers the BEUMER stretch hood, a high-capacity packaging system, which pulls a stretch hood over the palletised beverage products. Leading companies such as Logistic provider Fiege uses the BEUMER stretch hood to provide pallet loads of branded spirits with more efficient and flexible packaging. The BEUMER stretch hood i represents a new generation in the market: developed especially for sustainable operating mode, which can be evaluated systematically by BEUMER, using a validation system. For decades the topic of product protection when transporting and storing palletised product for companies in the beverage industry has become increasingly important. That is why BEUMER introduced an effective solution at the end of the 1980s, the BEUMER stretch hood, a high performance packaging machine that has undergone constant development since its introduction. Leading companies such as the contract logistics provider Fiege use this stretch hooding system to meet the increasing requirements for transport packaging. High requirements for the packaging In Bocholt, the Fiege Group headquartered in Greven, North Rhine-Westphalia, stores branded spirits for distilleries. Before being dispatched, these products are placed on a pallet and packaged in protective film. Since conventional pallet wrapping systems failed to satisfy increasing requirements, the logistics provider needed to replace the legacy wrapping system with a new end-of-line packaging system. The end-of-line packaging system would need to package palletised load units of different heights and contours to eliminate presorting, film changes and unnecessary film consumption. Furthermore, customer surveys showed that the pallet base should be free of film, that the film had to protect the load during trans-

port and against theft, and that it had to be transparent enough to ensure accurate barcode reading. For this reason, shrink hooding was dismissed as a potential packaging solution, as the shrink hood covers the pallet base and becomes milky in appearance due to the shrinking process. In addition, available wrapping technologies fell short of Fiege’s requirements, as traditional stretch wrapping involves high film consumption. Now a packaging system consisting of the BEUMER stretch hood and the upstream and downstream roller conveyors is used. The system packages up to 1,000 palletised load units per day. Technology that gets the job done The randomly palletised beverage boxes are conveyed to the end-of-line packaging system. The stack height is accurately recorded by photocells. The previously crimped film is sealed and cut to the length required for the stacking height. The palletised load unit to be packed can have a height of up to 2,400 millimetres.

The base surface of the pallet is between 700 by 700 and 1,450 by 1,250 millimetres. After sealing and cutting, the film hood is pulled open horizontally. The BEUMER stretch hood then lowers the edges of the film hood. This process is defined as biaxial stretching, as the film is stretched both in horizontal and vertical axes. As soon as the packaging system releases the film, the film contracts again and is placed on the palletised load unit to protect and stabilise it. It is possible to pack the palletised load unit both for high-bay storage systems - the pallet base is open for the forks of the fork-lift truck - and with understretch. During the understretch process, the film is pulled over the package base. The palletised load unit is then guided to the shipping area by using roller conveyors. This way it is possible to package up to 150 palletised load units per hour. The smooth and hole-free film surface ensures high visibility of the packed beverages. The film reliably protects the pallets from dirt, spillage and transport stress. And barcode labelling is quickly and consistently recognisable. The future of stretch hood technology BEUMER constantly improves the stretch hood film and the pallet end-of-line packaging method. With the BEUMER stretch hood i packaging system, the intralogistics specialist has introduced a new generation of this packaging system to the market and made sustainability a priority when developing the BEUMER stretch hood i. For comparison: its predecessors were capable of handling a minimum film thickness

of 60 µm – the BEUMER stretch hood i can handle film that is 40 µm thick. This flexibility significantly reduces consumption costs while helping to reduce environmental impact. Energy consumption is reduced by 12.5 % and compressed-air consumption by 53 %, compared to the two previous models. An intuitive human-machine interface simplifies machine operation. Sustainability is measurable To find a clear answer to the question “How sustainable is a system really?”, the BEUMER Group developed a validation system, the BEUMER Sustainability Index (BSI), which experts use continuously and systematically to measure the sustainability of both new technologies and existing solutions. “Our goal is to combine product performance and a sense of responsibility for man and the environment and thereby set a new standard for quality,” explains Dr. Christoph Beumer, chairman and CEO of the BEUMER Group. In order to achieve this, the company group obligated itself to evaluate its products comprehensively on three levels: economics, ecology and social responsibility. The BSI is a points system that records the sustainability of products with regard to these three levels. “Economic performance, market presence, financial chances and risks are known parameters. Our products will only become economically sustainable, when we tailor them and the corresponding production processes to longterm customer use,” says Dr. Beumer. Previously, the total cost of ownership (TCO) was the focus of business activities. Sustainability was defined solely from the ecological perspective. “For us, it is about incorporating ecological social aspects. Therefore, we follow a total value of ownership (TVO) approach. That means we see each product as a whole, not just the costs.” Aiming for the top To evaluate sustainability with the BSI, each of the three levels is divided into five categories. For example, this includes “Efficiency and Effectiveness”, “Service Life”, “Production-Related Resource Consumption” and “Training and Education Standards”. These categories are evaluated with up to five points. The sum results in a classification of “excellent”, “very good”, or “needs improvement”. If a product is classified as needing improvement, BEUMER puts it through a re-engineering process. With the BEUMER stretch hood i, the Beckum-based intralogistics specialist offers a system with a sustainability index of “excellent” and, as a consequence, the highest classification of sustainability.

ing cold seal applications) and lamination of various films for the food sector (confectionary, dairy, bakery, snacks, coffee, drinks, etc.). Over the years, the demands of the market and a willingness to offer an ever increasingly painstaking, precise and specialized service have enabled CIESD to invest in new production processes, such as the metallization and the de-metallization of flexible films of various types, focusing, on one hand on independence from outsourcers, and on the other, on expanding its product portfolio. During these years, the Company’s drive to devise new and appealing solutions has enabled it to develop two special processes, both of which were presented at Interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf: PERFECT REGISTER DE-METALLISATION and PEARLESCENT PRINTING on various packaging types. Both processes enhance the prestige of the packaged product, increasing its visibility and drawing the consumer’s attention.

to enter into the freezer. EASY Freeze is considered as the freezer with the most superior sanitation, giving the possibility to freeze different products one after the other without risk of cross - contamination. EASY Freeze is energy saving and trouble free solution for all your freezing needs. Within the freezing equipment product line, PIGO also manufactures the innovative EASY Freeze SPYRO, the latest generation of spiral freezers giving utmost advantages to the users in terms of energy efficiency, hygienic conditions and advanced technological characteristics, such as: • Belts gear motors are positioned outside the insulated cabin (no lubrication inside the freezer) avoiding any risks of contaminations due to some oil leakages; • The unit doesn’t have any mezzanine floor and or intermediary platform, to avoid any dirtiness accumulation (presence of any mezzanine floor or intermediary platform are making more difficult the cleaning operations) - the absolutely highest hygienic standards; • Freezer design is made according to max. thermal load and max. surface occupied on the belt by the different products foreseen; • Low maintenance cost and low spare parts cost due to utilisation of high quality commercial components; • Low pressure fans to higher air speed. In order to obtain a quick freezing process EASY Freeze SPYRO is designed for high speed circulation (4 -10 m/sec) of cold air in contact with the product, on the whole length of the spiral conveyor; • Very low weight loss, which is two times less than with vertical air flow • Hitting the incoming product with the coldest air; the product is therefore immediately “crusted” and snow formation diminished. PIGO freezers are built in modular sizes and all compo-

nents are made entirely of stainless steel, capable to provide perfectly frozen product even for delicate products like cooked rice, raspberries, etc. PIGO also designs, fabricates and assembles sophisticated pilot and production freeze dryers, EASY Freeze DRYER - LYOPHILIZER, product line which includes a broad range of standard and custom units. The freeze drying - dehydration technology allows to save delicate aromas while drying the frozen product under vacuum, producing premium quality product. The machine is made entirely in stainless steel (chamber, doors, hinges, shelf modules, trays etc) with shelf modules and vapour condenser contained inside the chamber. Viewing ports are provided in the doors, allowing observation of both the vapour condenser and product trays during the drying cycle. Each unit is equipped with complete refrigeration plant of corresponding size, including also refrigeration condensing unit which is purpose-built with capacity control to allow economical use of refrigerant. Besides EASY Freeze, EASY Freeze SPYRO, and EASY Freeze DRYER - LYOPHILIZER, one of the company’s main machines is automatic Pitting machine PG103 having at least 50-100% higher capacity than any other pitting machine on the market. Experience of all PIGO’s clients confirms work with 0,00% of remained stones when adequate quality and preparation of the fruit (clean, calibrated product with adequate ripeness) is provided. he response from bottlers to the four P.E.T. Engineering projects presented at BrauBeviale 2014 in Nuremberg from the 11th to the 13th of November proposing PET as a valid alternative to the usual materials used for premium water, beer and milk bottling was first-rate. Twins, Hero, Diva and Valley - created to enhance PET’s image with research into accessories such as labels, caps and over-packaging - were greeted

with great interest by those working in the sector thanks to their ability to combine attractive appearance, light weight, unbreakability and, above all, affordability. Confirming what could now be referred to as a trend, i.e. PET’s breakthrough into spheres which once denied it, P.E.T. Engineering was awarded the World Beverage Innovation Award for Devin - Crystal Line in the Best bottle in PET category. The comment which accompanied the Drink Technology Magazine 29

Twins, the P.E.T. Engineering proposal for small beer bottles in a minimalist but distinctive shape, brown colour, champagne base and crown cap is an ideal alternative to glass and could easily be manufactured in bottling plants. The bi-pack contains two bottles each of which has a different design: a hop and an ear of wheat. The decoration was applied through the direct printing technology of Till GmbH, an effect which resembles the screen printing methods commonly used for glass bottles. This Direct printing also makes it possible to print a different decoration on each individual bottle making it the ideal technology for a limited series. On the subject of the projects presented, Elisa Zanellato, P.E.T Engineering’s Marketing & Communication Manager, maintains that “creating coherent product systems rather than individual shapes can contribute to reconfiguring perceptions of PET bottles in the minds of bottlers and end consumers. It is thanks to its partnerships with other companies working in the production chain that we count on being able to take PET to new sectors and progressively widen its spheres of use”.

award was: “Beautifully designed and engineered bottle that looks like premium glass. The design delivers super premium appeal, taking PET into new territories.” Devin - Crystal Line, developed jointly with Retal, Novapet and a label designed by Design Board International, was also one of the finalists at the Luxury Packaging Awards in the Drinks Primary pack category, the only PET bottle among glass bottles for premium products. Among the projects presented at BrauBeviale we had Diva, in the 0.75l format, developed in response to the needs of bottlers of still and sparkling water looking for lightweight and affordable packaging without, however, giving up any of the elegance and transparency of glass. The use of Novapet’s Glasstar resin, the aluminium cap TALOG® from closurelogic , most commonly used for Ho.re.ca sector glass bottles, and its transparent label added a touch of style to a bottle inspired by drops of water and difficult to be distinguished from glass bottles.

P.E.T. ENGINEERING: Set up in 1999 P.E.T. Engineering has won a leading position in the international container design and industrialisation in the PET market in just over ten years with a client portfolio made up of exclusive beverage brands: PepsiCo, Nestlé Waters, Nestlè Vera, Sanpellegrino, Levissima, S.Bernardo, Henniez, Norda, Carlsberg, Baltika, Heineken, Efes, Ab Inbev, Ferrero, Rocchetta, Acque e TermeUliveto, Granarolo and Parmalat to cite but a few. Anticipating market requirements, attentive to the present and oriented to the future. P.E.T. Engineering is synonymous with Design, Innovation and Made in Italy. All this makes it the ideal partner for all beverage packaging requirements.

n the space of just 10 years the Italian-based cooling devices manufacturer Zanotti group has more than doubled annual profits, thanks to a successful business plan which was introduced right after the company’s privatisation in 2002. Today the group is ready to exploit the full potential of new markets by extending its international influence as a global player. The Zanotti group designs, develops, manufactures and tests refrigeration equipment for food storage and for industrial purposes, including cooling devices for transporting foodstuff. As a world leader in the production of air treatment and cooling solutions, the Italian company puts its success down to a number of key factors, including technological improvement and the introduction of customisable solutions for the

needs of each customer. One of the company’s key tactics has been to find the best practical application for our cooling devices. It is very important in the refrigeration sector to meet the particular needs of each customer, and, since we mainly work with food makers, this principle is even more important for our company. Technological research is another strong points. With over 50 years of specialist experience, ZANOTTI is proud to say that its know-how is reflected in products and everything Zanotti produces. The firm was founded as a family-owned company in 1962. From the very beginning the group has developed its potential as a leader in the field of refrigeration, by introducing new and revolutionary solutions such as, for example, the so-called ‘uniblock’ – a com-

accelerated: for instance, in 2002 our annual turnover was only €30 million, but in 2012 it had reached € 106 million. Fixed and transport devices It is particularly important for the Zanotti group to offer its customers only the best solutions in terms of quality. That’s way the company has been certified according to the ISO 9001 standard since 1996. Moreover, every single product manufactured by Zanotti in each part of the world is certified according to local parameters for quality, such as the CE parameters in the European countries and the UL parameters in the US. Under the name of KING of COLD, Zanotti produces and develops refrigerating units to cover the needs of small, medium and large-sized cooling necessities, as well as transport refrigeration. The cooling devices made by the Italian company can be subdivided into two categories: fixed and transport devices. The first category includes uniblocks, multicompressor plants, condensing units, racks and refrigeration devices for food preservation, while the other category includes diesel uniblocks, battery drive split units and others especially designed for trailer devices for the medium to long distance transportation of food. Up to 10 years ago Zanotti only manufactured fixed devices; then Zanotti decided it was time to diversify and started to make transport devices as well. In hindpletely self-contained and ready- sight, the decision was very wise. Today, in fact, the to-use cooling device for small two lines of production are equally important for the environments. Companies from the Zanotti Group are designing and manufacturing systems for ice rinks, such as the ones in Courmayeur, Italy or in the Arena of Minsk, Belarus. An international concern Zanotti’s plants are not only located in Italy. Apart from our two plants in Italy, which include the head office, Zanotti has a very important facility in Germany and a number of new plants located all around the world. More precisely, in the past two years Zanotti has built four new production plants owing to the fact that the output has increased a lot since 2002. The plants are located in the UK, in Spain, in China and in Brazil. This is just the production sites; the international sales network is much wider. In fact, Zanotti’s sales chain covers something like 70 countries worldwide. Zanotti is currently exporting 86 per cent of its production, which means that foreign markets are fundamental to the company economic growth. The presence in the European markets is strong, since Zanotti has sales points almost everywhere in Europe. Green alternative to traditional refrigeration system The know-how Zanotti acquired over 50 years also concerns the environmental aspects involved since the products are developed to provide low energy consumptions and reduced noise levels; as to meet the current technological trends that aim to contain greenhouse gas emissions. In compliance with the international standards on global warning, as the Protocol stipulated in the Japanese city of Kyoto on December 11, 1997, by more

than 180 countries at the COP3 conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Changes (UNFCCC) and which became effective in 2005, Zanotti implemented major changes to the manufacture its products. Currently, Zanotti produces units operating with ecological gases such as propane, propylene, ammonia and CO2. These units are widely used in all sectors of the food industry. Zanotti will continue to invest large sums of money every year to research new technologies that can reduce the amount of harmful emissions released into the atmosphere. Under the energy saving concept, was created the BESTCOPÂŽ technology. It is applied on the motorized condensing units that are manufactured by Zanotti to improve the efficiency and energy consumption levels of the cooling equipment. This basically can be translated into energy savings (from 15 to 20% depending on the different environmental conditions). Zanotti Spa developed the first Italian magnetic cooling at room temperature prototype, the only one of its kind worldwide, in collaboration with the TEC division of the Mechanical Engineering, Energetic, Production, Transportation and Mathematical Models Dept. (DIME) of the University of Genoa. This enabled Zanotti to acquire the basic elements needed to achieve this technology and to apply it by implementing a one of a kind cooling unit. This innovative achievement represents the foundation for the potential engineering development of the product in the future; always seeking better performances and applications that are competitive on the market. The attention devoted to customers and the flexibility of the products are essential characteristics for Zanotti: investing in Research and Development to better meet customer demand by providing more convenient solutions in terms of energy savings and reliability of use is a priority. ompanies operating in the Food & Beverage sector have to face a more and more competitive market and are required to offer a constantly diversified range of products, in order to meet the consumer’s disparate exigencies. Therefore, the solutions implemented by packaging machine manufacturers are expected to be innovative, cost-effective,

efficient, sustainable and able to realize appealing packages. Smiflexi range of automatic packers provides the end user all the technical and functional specifications required to manage production cycles efficiently and economically and to enable quick switch from one format to another. Among the new opportunities offered by Smiflexi

division there is the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, an accessory device (available both for the wrap-around case packers of the WP series and the heat-shrinkwrappers of the SK series) which features considerable advantages from an operating and functional point of view. With Easy-Load the operator can easily load cardboard blanks - stacked horizontally in uniform groups - because the feeding belt of the magazine is positoned at the same working height as the packer’s infeed belt, rather than under it. The innovative solution devised by SMI eliminates the disadvantages related to the manual loading of the cardboard blanks magazine, which force the operator to bend his/ her body continuously to place the blanks in the bottom part of the machine. The operator just places the cardboard blank stacks on the outermost roller conveyor so that the automatic control system can perform all the subsequent steps. Thanks to specific sensors, the layout and feed of the cardboard blanks on the conveyor belts fitted with the motorized roller and their loading into the packer’s magazine is, in fact, fully automated. Moreover, with the innovative EasyLoad system, even the unloading of the cardboard blanks is performed automatically, after processing a certain format, through a series of steps carried out in reverse order as compared to the loading steps. Fridge packs realized by SMI wraparound packers

The technology used in the Easy-Load magazine also features the great advantage of ensuring fluid and constant picking operations with a wide range of cardboard blanks having a thickness between 0.5 mm and 5 mm Thanks to the innovative Easy-Load cardboard blanks magazine, Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP are able to meet multiple exigencies: they can pack different types of products (glass, PET, cans, etc.) in different kinds of containers, of large or small size: kraft-paper boxes, microwave or corrugated cardboard boxes. Smiflexi wrap-around packers of the WP series can pack bottles and cans in cardboard boxes, called Fridge Packs, specifically designed to fit into the limited space offered by fridge compartments. Thanks to an innovative design, a pre-scored breakaway panel allows the consumer to conveniently take out of the package just the bottle or can he actually needs. The box thus becomes a dispenser of the products included in the packs. The technology used in the Smiflexi “Easy-Load” magazine features the great advantage of using Kraft-paper with a wrap-around packer. Kraft paper ensures a solid packaging, despite its reduced thickness. The polish, white surface of kraft paper is an optimal solution, ensuring excellent printability and appealing graphics, in order to draw the customer’s attention on the products displayed on the shelves at the sales outlets

FT-NIR

Spectroscopy for Liquid Milk Analysis The seasonal and regional variation in the composition of raw milk makes a standardisation of raw milk necessary for all subsequent processing steps. FT-NIR spectroscopy analyses the key parameters, fat, protein, dry matter and lactose, with comparable accuracy to conventional mid-infrared systems (FT-IR). Any kind of milk, e.g. raw milk, skimmed milk or UHT milk, can be analysed, as well as other liquid dairy products including cream, condensed milk, liquid ice cream, flavoured milk preparations and concentrates, even viscous products that conventional milk analysis instruments struggle to measure.

Moreover, solid and semi-solid sampled can be measured with the same FT-NIR spectrometer, e.g. raw milk & milk drinks cream & sour cream yogurt & desserts milk & whey powders lactose & whey protein concentrate hard & soft cheese A set of ready-to-use calibrations is available for a quick and efficient start with FT-NIR technology.

Checkweighers in lntralogistics

ustomer’s wishes are constantly becoming more individual. As a result of globalisation, it is not unusual for end-customers to configure their devices to personal wishes and receive individually manufactured products at their premises within the shortest of times. Flexibility in material flow is therefore the keyword. There is, however, also a developmenti in the opposite direction, towards more regionality. While globally-active firms are profiting from the world market, they do not wish, however, to do without their regional component suppliers. Firms of all sides are therefore facing the challenge of adapting lo this changed behaviour in purchasing, production and sales. This requires a high level of flexibility and thus also great changes within the firm. Planning with the right hardware and software is important In the field of intralogistics, the right material-flow

planning, from goods intake to production and assembly and then onto dispatch, is absolutely essential. Two components play a decisive role here: software and hardware. By networking machines, components, packaging and goods, seamless documentation of production is possible. Errors are communicated by the machines themselves , and products with the wrong weight or with inadequate labelling are also sorted out automatically. A machine of this kind, which is usually integrated into a !arge production system, must be just as flexibly adaptable as the associated software. Devices which cannot meet these challenges, especially in view of the constant shortening of product lifetime cycles, will not maintain their place. A competitive advantage is therefore offered by the

use of machines which can be tailored individually to the requirements of each customer. With suitable programs, such as the software “_statistics.BRAIN” from Bizerba , it is possible to produce comprehensive statistics and to draw conclusions from them regarding the minimization of rejections and process optimization. Weighing technology in particular must be very precise in the field of intralogistics, as an example from the food industry shows: manufacturers of foodstuffs are obliged, according to European pre-packaging regulations, to check all products which enter the sales chain for correct contents and to document this procedure. There are strict legal criteria concerning effective observance of the full weight, and these are monitored by a checkweigher. The CWF checkweigher from Bizerba categorises, with a speed of up to 400 packages per minute, the goods according to the specified weight classes and separates out overweight or underweight products by comparison with pre-stored reference weights. Depending on the customer’s wish, this is done with the help of a pusher or a flipper. In the long-term, this saves costs which could arise from complaints and give-aways, and gives sustained quality assurance in production .

Weight and contents monitoring in one device Not less important, furthermore, is a check on foreign bodies which the product could contain . ln its CWF checkweigher with integrated meta! Dectector, Bizerba combines weight and content monitoring in one device. For this, the machine produces an electric field in its coil area. Every product which passes through the detector leaves a specific pattern behind. Deviations from this point to contamination and trigger a rejection process. To make the system work , there has to be an initial teaching-in of each new product. The CWF consists of stainless steel and its construction allows it to be cleaned quickly and hygienically. lt thus satisfies the protection class IP 65 and can also be used in so-called grey areas, that is, in hygienically monitored areas situated between open and packaged goods. With their modular construction, Bizerba’s CWF systems can be integrated flexibly into production lines. Throughput direction and transport height, for example, can thus be adjusted very simply on site. lf the products or requirements are changed, the checkweigher simply grows to match . Bizerba thus achieves the necessary flexibility with its devices for every customer’s wishes.

nuga FoodTec exhibits concentrated knowhow and modern technologies for all areas of food and drinks production Anuga FoodTec - the international supplier trade fair for the food and drinks industry - will present an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of new technologies, facilities and supplier components for all areas of production from 24 to 27 March, 2015 in Cologne. In focus at the trade fair are modern analytical techniques which can, for example, help food producers to quickly and economically detect harmful metabolic products of mold, or so-called mycotoxins. Quick analysis and easy handling - ideally at the processing location - are of cen-

tral importance in these new methods. As part of the focal topic “Food Safety Anuga FoodTec will present countless topics and solutions within the field of analytical techniques, and with this, will communicate the latest methods and know-how to meet industry demands. Mycotoxins include aflatoxins, ochratoxins, ergot alkaloids, fusarium toxins, patulin and alternaria toxins. Over 350 mycotoxins originating from over 250 species of mold have now been discovered. Even small quantities of mycotoxins can be toxic to people and animals. Symptoms of poisoning can include liver and kidney damage, weakening of the immune system, damage to the skin and mucus membranes and hormonal disturbances such as fertility disorders. In addition, some mycotoxins are carcinogens

and some can lead to genetic defects. It is for this reason that food products are prohibited from containing, for example, more that two micrograms of aflatoxin B1 per kilogram. We often receive rapid warnings of contaminated specimens of figs, nuts, spices and corn from the European Commission. Boiling, baking or frying foods does not help to kill off the heat-resistant substances. Tracking down this ‘evildoer’ is therefore compulsory for food producers - they must prove through tests that their products do not contain any of the poisonous substances. Taking control with the test strip Analytic methods sensitive enough to detect mycotoxins have been around since the 1970s. The challenge today lies in developing appropriate procedures for on-site controls, in order to quickly and simultaneously detect mycotoxins in food products. Although laboratory testing is very exact, it is also costly and time-consuming, and rapid-response methods provide results in a shorter time. Immunological procedures such as ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay) and lateral flow tests, as well as chemical tests such as fluorimetric testing, offer more cost-effective methods of identifying aflatoxins and are helpful in routine daily work. With these tests even untrained staff can identify contaminated specimens without the need for laboratory conditions. The “lateral flow test”, for example, can detect individual

mycotoxins in just five minutes. In principle, the test system works like a rapid response test strip: if aflatoxin is in the sample, a test band will become visible, if not, it will remain unchanged. This provides a reliable test against the toxins, not only in corn and grain, but also in nuts, figs and, to a certain extent, spices. Another advantage is that the test can be used without any technical equipment, even directly upon delivery of raw produce. The ELISA method is just as fast and cost-effective: this can detect fusarium toxins in barley, oats, rye and corn. The microtiter plate test finds the substances on the basis of antigen antibody reactions in less than 20 minutes and allows for a high sample flow rate. The analytic techniques of tomorrow can stop mycotoxins in their tracks The legally defined maximum values for mycotoxins still need to be verified using reference methods. Rapid tests serve only to provide an estimation of the toxic content in food products. More precise results require detection through high-performance liquid chromatography or mass spectrometry. New techniques should provide solutions: scientists want to trace the substances using infrared laser spectroscopy. The European Commission’s mycospec project is based on new laser diodes with an emission wavelength in the middle infrared range. “They can be tuned across a wide spectral range, meaning the mycotoxins’ complex signatures can be captured in infrared” explains Prof. Dr. Boris Mizaikoff, head of the Institute for Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry at the University of Ulm. Using this measuring technique the samples can be prepared quickly on site, which simplifies monitoring limit values. The project group hopes to have the prototypes ready by 2015. Just as practical is the project facilitated by the food industry’s research group to develop a biosensor array, which should be able to detect all relevant mycotoxins in grain and grain products. The biochip detects up to five mycotoxins in under 11 minutes. In future, the maximum values for mycotoxins in food products may be further reduced. To this end, the business consultants AFC Consulting published a study “Mycotoxin Analytics” in 2013 in which they investigate the problem of harmful substances in grain and products containing grain. 55 percent of food producers surveyed agree that guaranteeing safe, mycotoxin-free products will become increasingly important. he market of fruit juice is developing quite rapidly and the share of NFC juices is considerably increasing because of their high quality. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth potential. Of particular importance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are prepared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grapefruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orange-pineapple, carrot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popular. The main hints for the design of a plant processing fresh fruit into chilled juices are:  Optimization of flow of fruit/juice  Optimization of characteristics of process equipment  Optimization of processing cycles in order: 1. Decrease processing times 2. Minimize oxidation of the juice 3. Keep high organolectic characteristics  Optimize CIP system to control the microbiology of the juice. Some of the machines used for the application are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance:  Dedicated citrus juice extractors (orange, lemons, grapefruit), on order to minimize the essential oil content in the juice and assure a good control of the pulp.  Deshellers and dedicated presses for pomegranate to produce cloudy or clear juice which importance is considerably increasing for the beneficial health characteristics.

Dedicated pineapple juicing in order to obtain high quality juice only from the edible part of the fruit without contamination with the peel. These are some examples but few. Extractors for juice/puree can be provided for apples, carrots, pears, passion fruit, banana, beets, mango, spinach, asparagus, berries, hawthorns guava. The obtained juice is immediately (blended or not) slightly pasteurized (65-70°C) and chilled before filling. All these examples of equipment have been designed, built and put in operation by Bertuzzi Food Processing Srl, an Italian Company that operates in this field since 1936 and that supplies plants and machines to process fruit and vegetables to produce juice, concentrates, baby food, jam, ready-made drinks etc…
