4-H Consumer Judging What is Consumer Decision Making Judging? Making a decision and understanding product standards* In 4-H, consumer judging is essentially a matter of comparing items and deciding which is better and why. Our goal is to teach 4-H'ers to make wise consumer choices. How does a 4-H'er compete? The key to successful judging is to assess a given situation and to select the best choice based on the situation and criteria. A 4-H'er may or may not have specific knowledge of factors that make up the ideal choice. They need to be able to recognize the best choice for the given situation. The process is similar to Livestock Judging. The contest involves making, buying, or consumer choices from any 4-H project area. What Does Consumer Judging teach 4-Hers? 1. To observe closely 2. Consumer decision-making based on a given situation 3. To recognize quality products 4. The ability to reason 5. To present and defend decisions 6. To present ideas concisely

What will happen at the Monona County Consumer Judging event? 4-H and adults will go to stations that have a situation card and 4 products for comparison. They will rank order the products from best to worst and mark a judging card, then go onto another judging station. There will be 5 different judging stations at the county fair contest. 4-H'ers and adults will receive points based on how their ranking compares to the official placing. Come and check out the fun... and let the competition begin! Look for the “Consumer Judging” contest during static judging day of the County Fair.

Consumer Judging Contest at the Fair Test your ‘smart shopping’ and decision making skills at the Consumer Judging Contest on July 11 in the 4-H building during 4-H Exhibit Judging. 4-H’ers and interested adults are invited to compete. The contest will consist of five judging stations describing a situation based on a 4-H project area and 4 products/alternatives. Participants must rank the products from best to worst and mark their choices on a judging card. 4-H'ers and adults will receive points based on how their ranking compares to the official placing. The top 4 Junior 4-H’ers and the top 4 Intermediate/ Senior 4-H’ers will be eligible to compete at the District Consumer Judging Contest at the Clay County Fair in September. Come and check out the fun... and may the competition begin! Look for the “Consumer Judging” contest during static judging day of the County Fair. Consumer Judging Contest Rules 1. The contest is open to all 4-H members and adults. 2. The contest will be on July 10, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the 4-H Exhibit Building. 3. The contest will consist of judging five classes in 4-H Project areas. 4. Individuals will be divided into 3 division (Juniors, grades 4-6; Intermediates/Seniors, grades 7-12; and Adults) 5. Top Ten placing of individuals in each division will receive certificates. 6. No premiums are paid for the Consumer Judging Contest. 7. Results of the contest will be posted in the 4-H Exhibit Building. The top 4 Junior 4-H'ers and top 4 Intermediate/Senior 4H'ers will be able to advance on to the District Consumer Judging Contest at the Clay County Fair in September.

County Fair Livestock entry forms due to the Extension Office by July 1st.
