Fire and Ice makes things nice for St. Jude’s By Kaylan Lovrovich
The Pacific Science Center brought its Science on Wheels program to Endeavour Elementary School on Nov. 20, giving students hands-on lessons in physics, engineering, astronomy, biology and geology. “It’s going to be all about food, fashion and fun,” said Karen Lawler, Sip restaurant’s director of marketing. “And it’s all for a really good cause.” Attendees will be greeted with appetizers and champagne, followed by a sitdown lunch and a fashion show put on by Opal. There will also be a raffle and prizes. Shannen Wyman, owner of Opal, opened her Issaquah Highlands location just two months ago. “We’re new in the area, so I’m looking forward to meeting some of the people in the community,” Wyman said, “and we always love to be involved with different charities.” Twenty percent of any clothing purchases will be donated to the research hospital. Opal is a boutique for contemporary women’s apparel. The store carries a wide variety of clothing, with popular brands such as Michael Stars, True Religion and Vince. Jamie Scelzi and her husband Lane are the owners of Sip. They also own Melting Pot restaurants in Washington state, which is how they got started fundraising for St. Jude. “Melting Pot tries to raise the money to provide funds to cover operating costs for St. Jude for just one day,” Scelzi said. That might not seem like much, but one day costs the research hospital $1.8 million to run. When the Scelzis opened Sip eight years ago, they saw it as an opportunity to give even more. “We thought it would be great if we could help out at Sip and donate our proceeds to St. Jude as well,” Scelzi said. Reindeer Festival welcomes new fliers By David Hayes dhayes@isspress.com Santa is celebrating this holiday season with new members on his flying travel team and will debut them at the 25th annual Reindeer Festival at the Cougar Mountain Zoo. Joining the other 10 reindeer at the zoo are Rowley, named after sponsor Rowley Properties, and Issy, named after the town he was born in. Zoo curator, and head elf, Robyn Barfoot said Rowley was born May 9 and Issy came along not far behind, on July 9; both have the same dad. “Our visitors have a unique opportunity to peer into the joyous world of Santa Claus and learn about his amazing animal friends,” Barfoot said. “It makes for an unforgettable holiday experience.” In fact, Rowley couldn’t wait to join the zoo’s community outreach program. Students raise funds for typhoon victims By Neil Pierson npierson@ sammamishreview.com After Kathy Stimpson’s fourth-grade students at Challenger Elementary School read a nonfiction story last month, they spent some time in reflection. Then, they put their thoughts into words and actions. “We were reading about how Italians were emigrating to America, and we
saw a picture of one of the reasons why,” student Sean Brainard said. “And it was because some of the Italians, all their homes were destroyed by an earthquake.
