ISLE OF MAN

Welcome to our Spring 2022 Newsletter Dear Friends, Welcome to our Spring Newsletter – we “sprung” forward to British Summer Time last week so now enjoying longer days and even some late snow and frost today, which I thought, was an April Fool’s joke! Included within this newsletter is Manx Museum 100, I would like to pay tribute to the staff of Manx National Heritage past and present who have always gone the extra mile to help us whenever asked. It is therefore a great pleasure to display items chosen by each of the collection curators to celebrate Manx Museum 100. We still have a large number of collectors whose account stretches back to 1999 and even to day 1 5th July 1973, it has been a long journey to conclude our Buses series. When you see all four sets together, they really do make for an impressive review of one aspect of public transport on our Island, sincere thanks to Peter Hearsey, Richard Davis and Stan Bassnett for their support and guidance.

EILEEN SCHAER MARKS RELEASE OF STAMP ISSUE Ahead of issue date, we visited featured artist Eileen Schaer at her home studio to celebrate the release of her stamp issue. Eileen moved to the Island in 1975 and has since developed a distinctive style much loved by both local and global collectors. Her collection features six depictions of animals derived from her own imagination and painted in Eileen’s trademark style. When asked about the issue, Eileen commented: “It’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to celebrate my animal paintings in this new issue of Isle of Man stamps and to be able to showcase them to a new audience.”

POSTAL PRICES RISE With effect from 4th April 2022, please find below table of updated postal values. The revised stamp values are featured across our latest stamp issues. Chris Thomas MHK, Chair of Isle of Man Post Office said: “A nearly 10% stamp price rise this year

is needed to protect our first class postal service for letter mail and parcels. Like so many businesses, the Post Office is feeling the pinch of increased operating costs, for instance the cost of the mail plane has risen by 23.8% given the increased cost of petrol and oil.”

ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS PLEASED TO PRESENT THIS JOYFUL SET OF SIX STAMPS SHOWCASING THE WORK OF ONE THE ISLE OF MAN’S MOST INDIVIDUAL AND POPULAR ARTISTS. OUR SELECTION FOCUSSES ON ANIMALS TO SHOWCASE EILEEN’S HIGHLY IDIOSYNCRATIC PAINTINGS. Eileen works from her imagination. She is self-taught and has been painting for many years. Her magical paintings have a sophisticated and at the same time childlike primitive feel which her admirers and collectors like so much. The animals are set in an imaginary setting either alone or in human company creating a dreamlike world. She hopes her paintings are uplifting and bring joy so that they can take life out of its mediocrity which she thinks is essential during these dark times. Eileen has worked in a variety of media over the years: from meticulous tiny gouache paintings to large scale oil paintings, painted sculpture and lino-cut prints. Our stamp images represent paintings in acrylic on board, with the imagery extending over the risen frame of each piece.

Eileen’s love of animals is portrayed in her paintings and she says:

“We can learn so much from animals. They have no ego, live in the moment and can show you so much love. It is such a privilege to experience that connection between yourself and another creature. A relationship on a spiritual level perhaps? Animals can be our best friends, they can be loyal and can be our guardians.”

EILEEN SCHAER Eileen Schaer was born in Liverpool in 1948 and has been painting since 1970. She lived in London for a number of years and moved to the Isle of Man in 1975. Her late husband, the artist and teacher David Fletcher, was Course Leader for the Arts Foundation Course at the IOM College for many years. They lived next door to the Laxey Woollen Mills, with the distinctive sound of a rookery nearby and these birds have often featured in her work. There they raised 4

two children and had a very active and positive presence within the Manx contemporary art scene by inspiring, exhibiting and promoting the work of generations of young Manx students and graduates. Eileen has worked and exhibited consistently all her adult life and has work in many private and public collections. She has been represented in numerous mixed thematic exhibitions in academic, commercial and public galleries in such diverse locations as India, Switzerland, London and Liverpool. eileenschaer.com

When the Manx Museum first opened its doors to the public on 2nd November 1922 it sought to engage and inspire its visitors with amazing artefacts. Manx National Heritage continues to preserve and protect the diverse collections held by the Manx Museum - from archives to art, archaeology, social history and natural history and to tell the rich stories of our Island, past and present. Throughout 2022 we will be exploring and sharing those extraordinary stories and celebrating our most precious objects and the incredible work of Manx National Heritage. The Island’s community is invited to join the celebrations and take a journey of discovery and wonder, through 100 objects in the MUSEUM 100 exhibition, opening in October 2022. Oldest Surviving Manx Motor Vehicle, 1911 This eight horsepower Renault car once belonged to Wilson James Ashburner, of Douglas, a gentleman of private means. He was also an artist and friend of Archibald Knox. It was Knox’s father, an engineer, who maintained the vehicle. The engine still starts and would have had a maximum speed of around 35mph. Carmine-Red Definitive Stamp Prior to postal independence in 1973 the General Post Office was in control of all post and telecoms for the Isle of Man. The image shows a Carmine-Red regional definitive stamp issued on the 8th June 1964. All regional definitives were invalidated for postal services on the 1st March 1972 when decimal values were introduced. This stamp depicting Queen Elizabeth II Lord of Mann was commonly used for posting mail off the Isle of Man. ‘Head and Shoulders of a Child’ by Frank Mowbray Taubman, 1893 This bronze sculpture of a child wearing a hood or cowl is the work of artist Frank Mowbray Taubman (1868-1946). Of Manx parentage, Taubman spent much of his working life in London. ‘On the Beach at Douglas’ by William Hardie Hay, 1894 This painting depicts two important aspects of a Victorian seaside holiday on the Isle of Man. The simple pleasure of playing on the beach, with the Palace Ballroom and the Derby Castle in the background, highlighting the range of evening entertainments on offer. During this period the Isle of Man was the centre of summer entertainment in the British Isles. 6

Pygmy Shrew (Sorex minutus) Taxidermy The Isle of Man is home to the smallest mammal on Earth, the Pygmy Shrew. They weigh four grams and have one of the fastest metabolisms of any animal, meaning they have to eat every two hours, day and night. Rushen Abbey Floor Tile, c.AD1400 This tile was found during archaeological excavations at Rushen Abbey. Made from clay, it is decorated with a four leaf pattern and would originally have had a dark green glaze over the surface. When Rushen Abbey was first built during AD 1100s, the monks wanted to live simply, without grand buildings. But times changed and hundreds of these decorative tiles were used to pave the central areas of a large church, with an alternating dark green and cream colour scheme giving a rather sophisticated chequerboard effect. Building Beginnings, Noble’s Isle of Man Hospital, 1886 An assembled crowd witnesses Rebecca Noble lay the foundation stone of Noble’s Isle of Man Hospital, Douglas on 26 July 1886. Using £5,000 provided by her husband, the hospital was built in the garden of Rebecca’s family home, Clifton House. The distinctive red brick building was repurposed to become the Manx Museum from 1922. Sulby Glen Corn Flour Sign In the later 19th century the Sulby Glen Starch Company diversified, ceasing production of starch and instead manufacturing corn flour. A striking illustration of Manx business and product advertising, the company’s starch had previously been promoted ‘As used in the royal laundry Balmoral’. The Sulby Glen Flour Mill no longer trades.

Elephant Hawk-moth (Deilephila elpenor) Elephant Hawk-moths are named so because their caterpillars look like an elephant’s trunk and they are one of our most colourful moths, often being thought of as an exotic escaped pet. They are nocturnal and feed on flowers that are open and produce nectar at night. King Sihtric Coin, c.AD1030 One of the earliest coins to be minted in the Isle of Man, this is a silver penny with a representation of King Sihtric, ruler of Dublin. It was buried around AD1030 with 463 other silver coins, 25 silver ingots and one silver armring. We don’t know who buried such a large amount of wealth or why. They never returned for it and the hoard lay in the ground for almost a thousand years until metal detectorist Andrew Whewell discovered it in 2003.

We are delighted to present our set of twelve stamps marking 100 years of Our BBC. The Corporation has been such a big part of all of our lives, informing, educating and entertaining us across ten changing decades. As it marks its centenary moment, the BBC reflects on its past but more importantly looks forward dynamically to the next 100 years. Our stamp set does the same: it highlights some of the great BBC moments that have touched our lives and it presents them in a modern, contemporary design relevant for audiences of all time. Robert Seatter, Head of BBC History writes:

Our Twelve Stamps

The BBC is delighted to be marking one hundred years of the BBC with this set of special anniversary stamps. Selecting just twelve moments was extremely hard, but we hope we have captured something for everyone – across radio, television and online, and connecting with the range of genres from news and factual programming to comedy, children’s and entertainment.

Each stamp features a unique icon of BBC broadcasting:

What has underpinned the BBC across 100 years, and enabled it to evolve is a spirit of innovation. From the dawn of radio to its launch of the world’s first high-definition television service, the BBC has readily embraced technological change over the decades. More recently, the innovations of iPlayer and BBC Sounds have tapped into the power of the internet to provide content as and when audiences want it. And it’s always creativity that is at the heart of what we do – producing distinctive content that audiences have loved and will we hope continue to love – whether it’s the adventures of a timetravelling doctor, great collective sporting moments, gripping and dramatic EastEnders storylines or breath-taking visions of the natural world… Finally, the BBC is about providing impartial and trusted news, not just here in the UK but right around the globe. We have the largest news gathering team in the world and we broadcast in 42 languages across all continents and platforms. The BBC is the first major public service broadcaster to be marking 100 years of continuous broadcasting, and we are delighted to be celebrating this moment with you. 10

Platinum Jubilee Fifty Pence Collection AI87 £27.50

HM Queen Platinum Jubilee Collection Imperforate Sheet ABC44 £100.00

We are thrilled to offer the Isle of Man Government Platinum Jubilee Fifty Pence collection. This momentous event has been commemorated by a release of 5 x 50 pence coins, each featuring lines of text from the first verse of the British National Anthem, along with each of the Queen’s Beasts.

We are honoured to present this collectable complete with a certificate of authenticity hand signed by His Excellency Lieutenant General Sir John Lorimer KCB DSO MBE, Her Majesty’s personally appointed Lieutenant Governor of Mann.

This collection is presented in a regal purple folder accompanied by text detailing Her Majesty the Lord of Mann’s close relationship with the Isle of Man throughout her reign.

This hand numbered strictly limited release of just 70 editions comprises a very special product. This sheet is exactly what rolls off the printer’s press and foiling machines, with the colour bars and grip left in place. Unsurprisingly, these sheets are very rarely released, making for a truly special and unique collectable for this event.
