FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou All seasons are special in Tara Woods, but fall and winter are my favorites. Each year we get to see our returning neighbors and have the special time to catch up. Our weather takes a turn, and we have to consider “do I need a sweatshirt before I go out?”. Our Community Activities get kicked up a notch. All the many activities see more people gathering and enjoying each other’s company. Watching people together enjoying each other is the definition of Community and Tara Woods is a strong community – we know and respect each other! Your Tara Woods Homeowners Association Board of Directors met with our new Community Manager Helen Bobbitt. She was welcoming and fully understands how an active knowledgeable HOA helps contribute to a successful community. Your TWHOA also arranged and sponsored “Huddle with Helen”, where our Manager, Helen, answered submitted questions and also questions from the overflow resident audience. Your Board of Directors have worked diligently on updating and renewing the TWHOA By-Laws. The proposed changes were submitted to the By-Laws Committee for their review. Their recommendations were incorporated into the proposals and will be submitted to the membership for their approval. Your TWHOA Statutory Rent Committee has met numerous times preparing their presentation to the Hometown America area Vice-President on the rent increase and to recommend items for major improvements

in our Community. HEADS UP – How about the Day of Caring and the Quarter Auction? WOW!! Thank you to the Day of Caring Committee: Judy & Rich Girty, Board Member Chris Olson, and Sue Cook for their hard work and excellent planning. A big thank you also to every volunteer during the Quarter Auction whose hard work and dedication contributed to a very successful evening. This has been OUR best year ever!. All contributions stay right here in the North Fort Myers and Fort Myers area. THANK YOU ALL. Tara Woods is a caring community, and it shows. DID YOU KNOW THAT - We ALL thank those who have served to protect our great nation. With the collaboration of Fred Puhlfuerst and his Pancake Breakfast team, your Tara Woods Homeowners Association, and Tara Woods Hometown America, all veterans were treated to a free pancake breakfast and a special gift. At 10:30 AM we all gathered at the Armed Forces Memorial near the Butterfly Garden to pay tribute to all our veterans, and we even had time for an impromptu singalong before our participation in the 11-11-11 Celebration Across the Nation. The excellent size of the turn-out speaks volumes about our community. Special thanks to our resident bugler, Jack LaSelva. Lou Dunning, President, 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

FMO NEWS TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS We have all heard the expression that there is strength in numbers – whether it is a work detail, putting a party together, or even voting. The stronger the organization or group, the better the outcome. The FMO is no exception. The more members we have, the better chance for a successful outcome. That outcome can come in many ways. We can either defeat legislation that does not benefit our members or pass legislation that benefits our members. The more members the FMO has, the better chance that our elected representatives will listen to us. Membership in the FMO cannot be left to our neighbors. We must act as a community – the Tara Woods Community. If you are unsure of your membership status, you can go onto the FMO website, call 321-214-4300, or fill out an application online. Applications are on the back bulletin board in the Clubhouse. When filling out the application, please write clearly to avoid possible typos. Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? You cannot complain if you have not participated. ~ Thank you, Stuart Berman

A DAY OF CARING REPORT I have such great news. Not only was the Quarter Auction a huge success, earning $5,188.00, but our envelope donations have far exceeded any we have had before. We are at a new total on this day, November 13th, of $8,993.00. Outstanding! Next week, I will be presenting three checks for $4,000.00 each, to the Fort Myers Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities at the Elizabeth Kay Galeana Center in Fort Myers, and our new Holiday 4 Heroes. The Holiday 4 Heroes will also get a separate $500.00 check which I

received from the Vietnam Vets of America. Remember, Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways are also included in A Day of Caring. Our donations for each charity go to making Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other December holidays a much happier event for needy families. We are still taking donations through mid-December. You guys are so giving, it makes my heart sing. ~ Thanks, Chris Olson Chairperson for A Day of Caring

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH The Team for Neighborhood Watch wishes our community a Happy Holiday Season to all. Please continue to be watchful for each other and for anything amiss in our community. This can be taken outside of our community to practice as you travel on the busier roads and shop in stores. Be mindful of your personal space and remember to report anything outside of normal. The Neighborhood Watch team will be putting together a presentation for Tuesday,

January 16th, by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. It is a program that will benefit everyone, and we look forward to having everyone attend. It is titled ‘Fraud, Scams and Identity Theft’, presented by Destiny Unsworth, Lee County Crime Preventionist. Destiny previously presented the ‘Women’s Self Defense’ course, which was well received. Safe holidays and travel to all. ~ The Neighborhood Watch Team

NFMD ANNUAL HOLIDAY COLLECTION LET’S ALL SAY THANK YOU AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO OUR LOCAL PARAMEDICS AND FIREFIGHTERS. It’s once again time to begin collecting donations for our Annual Firefighters & Paramedics Holiday Dinners. These members of our North Fort Myers Fire Department respond to calls for help by Tara Woods residents any time of the day or night. It gives us great pleasure to give back to them during the holidays. As we did last year, we will use your donations to provide Publix Gift Cards for the three shifts who work December 22nd, 23rd,

Or you can call Chuck Poveromo or Celia Blotkamp, and we will be happy to pick up your donation. NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY To celebrate National First Responders Day, Helen Bobbitt, Community Manager at Tara Woods, bought twenty-five pizzas for the North Fort Myers Fire Department and paramedics.

Submitted by Lesley Krauss pklesley@icloud.com look at what we do and see if it’s something you might like, because I think you will. At the moment, we are also looking for a pianist to accompany us, as well as a conductor. If that is something you may have an interest in, please feel free to email me at the email below and I will be happy to meet with you. On Wednesday, December 13th, at 7:30 PM, after our annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade, we are all meeting back at the Clubhouse for a good old-fashioned Christmas sing-along hosted by The New Image Chorus. Please bring some Christmas goodies to share and we will provide some beverages. Hope to see you all there, and from all of us in The New Image Chorus, have a wonderful holiday season, and I hope to see you at one of our practices!

NEW IMAGE CHORUS

As they say, when one door closes, another door opens. I am as the new reporter for The New Image Chorus! With Stu Berman leaving our community, he certainly left some big shoes to fill! Not only did he serve as representative for many various committees here in Tara Woods, but he and his lovely wife, Belle, were both active members of our chorus, with Stuart taking on the role of President. I was asked to step in to be President upon his departure. My hope is to live up to his legacy. That being said, we are always looking for new members for our chorus. We do not have auditions; you don’t need to read music, but you do have to want to have some fun and enjoy singing a few songs with us! We meet in the Clubhouse every Monday from 12:302:30 PM. TENNIS NEWS Submitted by Linda Engel TENNIS ASSOCIATION I hope everyone had a good time at the first Round Robin that was held on November 25th. A reminder: There is no Round Robin in December. All levels of play are always welcome at Open Tennis on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 AM. Don’t be shy; if you’re just starting to play tennis or just getting back into playing after retirement, come out and join us. It’s a great way to meet people from the community. OPEN TENNIS The “Open Tennis” continues to attract a lot of tennis players in Tara Woods. It’s always nice to see the courts full of enthusiastic tennis players! Feel free to join us on the tennis courts any Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. We welcome all skill levels. We are out there to have some fun and to get some exercise. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by and see what is happening on the tennis courts. TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League: White Team – Stallions As of the date of my writing this article, unfortunately I don’t have any results from our first two matches. But, as usual, the team members appreciate your support at our games, which are slated to begin at 1:30 PM. Warmups begin at 1:00 PM. The league will be very competitive again this year

and we hope to be able to compete with the best in the league and provide the fans with some good tennis. ~ Ed Sandre White Team – Mustangs By the time you read this, our team will have already played three matches, hopefully winning a few of them. We are looking forward to the season. Some members of the team will not be arriving until after the holidays, so we will be short-handed until then. We are looking forward to seeing our tennis fans at the courts for our home games. Our schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board; both home and away games are listed there. Matches are played on Tuesdays starting at 1:30 PM. We appreciate all the support from the residents; thank you in advance for coming out. See you at the courts. ~ Roger Rafferty Blue Team – Tigers Our Exhibition Season started on November 2nd. We play on Thursdays at 1:30 PM, sometimes starting a little earlier if all players are ready. This will continue until the first Thursday after the new year when the Regular Season starts. Exhibition Season rules are not as strict as the Regular Season, but there will be matches. Our Blue Team practice is on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00 to 10:30 AM. The Blue Team can always use new players. If interested in playing for the Blue Team, you can either

show up for practice, or call Don Swartz at 239-599-8184. ~ Don Swartz Women’s League Women’s Team – Angels The Women’s SWIFT tennis league officially started on November 9th. There are 7 teams in the league. Since we were the league champions last season, we received a bye the first week. Our first game was on Thursday November 16th, at Del Tura. Our first home game was on November 30th at 9:30 AM. A copy of our full schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. Mary Cauldwell has stepped up to become the team’s captain. She will run the team with the help of her co-captain, Pat Gless. The rest of the team looks forward to working and playing with both of them. Thanks to Trish Martell who captained the team last year and worked to get the team roster together for this season. The Tara Woods Angels are looking forward to an enjoyable, successful, and injury-free season. We look forward to seeing you at the courts. ~ Mary Sandre ROUND ROBINS Please join us for our Round Robin tennis event on Saturday, January 27th! It’s a fun morning of tennis for all levels of play, followed by lunch on the verandah. It’s a great way to meet new friends and have fun! The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board, or you can contact me at 239-888-9135. ~ Greg Girard

December 2023 Merry Christmas And Happy New Year 2024 RESIDENT DIRECTORY UPDATE The NEW 2024 Resident Directory has been submitted to the publisher. The current date to begin distribution has been changed to the week of January 29th, 2024. All resident information including additions, changes, or deletions must be received by Sunday, December 31st, 2023 for inclusion in the 2024 Directory. TWHOA members and residents should submit additions, updates, or changes to me by email: haywood.gandy@gmail.com. Please include your Lot #, Name, Address, Telephone Number(s) and Home State(s). Updates to the Directory are published in The Columns which is also available on the TWHOA website.

TOY DRIVE There are still too many children in North Fort Myers whose parents will struggle to give them gifts this holiday season. Every year North Fort Myers Fire District (NFMFD) sponsors a toy drive for children, ages infant to fourteen years, every year. All toys that are collected are distributed to children right here in North Fort Myers. NFMFD has asked the CERT teams to coordinate this effort in their communities. Your Tara Woods CERT team is only too happy to help! Chuck Poveromo (Thanks, Chuck!) has led this effort over the past several years and we are grateful that he is doing it again this year. Historically, Tara Woods has been the leader in giving for this Toy Drive. Please place new unwrapped toys on the edge of the stage in the Clubhouse. A few ideas to help you decide on your gift: Gifts for young teens are especially needed. Things like sport balls, bikes (with helmets), and games. Bikes are a very popular item as they help young teens have some mobility. Consider pooling your

money with other Tara Woods residents to make a bike and helmet purchase. Of course, toys of all types and for all ages are appreciated. Even gift cards can be given. They are not given to the parents but are used by Christi Fulton, the NFMFD Public Education Officer and CERT Manager, to purchase more toys. Wrapping paper and gift bags can also be placed in the large boxes on the stage. All donated gifts will be picked up by North Fort Myers firefighters at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 14th. Come on out and join in the fun as we pack everything in the U-Haul truck they bring out. Once the toys are picked up, they are taken to the Baptist Church where they are sorted. Needy parents apply to receive toys for their children. Parents are also given gift wrapping supplies. Please help us make the holidays special for North Fort Myers children and their families. Make your donation to the Toy Drive today! ~ Barbara Werner-Lubich, CERT President

Can you make charitable giving less ‘taxing’?

Once again, it’s the season of generosity. In addition to considering gifts for your loved ones, you might want to think about charitable gifts as well. But what should you know before making gifts to charities? And what impact might these gifts have on your financial and tax situation? First, you may want to create a gift budget by deciding just how much you will give to charitable organizations over the rest of the year. Next, look closely at the groups to whom you wish to contribute. You can find many reputable charities, but some others may be less worthy of your support. One of the red flags of a questionable organization is the amount of money it spends on administrative costs versus the amount that goes to its stated purpose. You can check on the spending patterns of charitable groups, and find other valuable information about them, on the well-regarded Charity Navigator website (charitynavigator.org). Once you’ve established a gift budget and are comfortable with the groups you choose to support, you might turn your thoughts to another key issue connected with charitable giving: tax benefits. A few years ago, changes in the tax laws resulted in a large increase in the standard deduction, which meant that many taxpayers found it more favorable not to itemize — and lost the ability to take charitable deductions. But if you still do itemize, your charitable gifts or contributions to tax-exempt groups — those that qualify as 501(c)(3) organizations — can generally be deducted, up to 60% of your adjusted gross income, although lower limits may apply, depending on the nature of your gift and the organization to which you’re contributing. Other, more long-term avenues also exist that combine charitable giving with potential tax benefits. One such possibility is a donor-advised fund, which allows you to make an irrevocable charitable contribution and receive an immediate tax deduction. You can give cash, but if you donate appreciated assets, such as stocks, your tax deduction would be the fair market value of the assets, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. Plus, you would not incur the capital gains tax that would otherwise be due upon the sale of these assets. Once you establish a donor-advised fund, you have the flexibility to make charitable gifts over time, and you can contribute to the fund as often as you like. Another possible tax benefit from making charitable contributions could arrive when you start taking required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and 401(k). These RMDs could be sizable — and distributions are counted as taxable income. But by taking what’s called a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), you can move money from a traditional or Roth IRA to a qualified charitable organization, possibly satisfying your RMD, which then may be excluded from your taxable income. You must start taking RMDs at 73 but you can begin making QCDs of up to $100,000 per year as early as age 70½. (This amount will be indexed for inflation after 2023.) Establishing a donor-advised fund and making qualified charitable distributions are significant moves, so you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor first. But if they’re appropriate for your situation, they may help you expand your ability to support the charitable groups whose work you admire. To stay informed of events in Tara Woods:

GOING WITH THE TAI CHI FLOW Better balance and leg strength are two benefits of its slo-mo moves In the workout world, tai chi is more tortoise than hare. But its slow and purposeful moves can actually help you go the distance. Combining controlled, choreographed postures with a side of spirituality, tai chi is loosely based on Chinese martial arts and arrived in the U.S. in the 1940s. But while you might be able to imagine how this “meditation in motion” could help lower blood pressure and stress or boost the immune system, there are muscle building benefits to tai chi, too. Some of those derive from how you complete many of its repetitive, upright moves – creeping forward, shifting your weight from foot to foot – with your knees slightly bent. Doing that means you’re working the largest muscle groups in the body – the glutes and quadriceps – which are the first to atrophy as we age. As it turns out, those muscles are also very important to balance. For that reason and others, beginner-friendly tai chi has been shown to be especially good at helping to prevent falls for people over 65. As such, this exercise is becoming a major line of defense against life-altering tumbles. That’s because recent government guidelines recommend exercise over other strategies like calcium supplements to prevent bone fractures related to falls, which means that getting serious about tai chi could be a very smart move indeed for those of us seniors. What’s more, tai chi practitioners are also frequently reminded to “feel” the earth or be aware of the connection between their foot and the ground – something that can help them negotiate uneven surfaces more steadily, and, possibly, to be a bit more grounded in their approach to life. To learn more about tai chi, come to a tai chi class here at the Tara Woods Clubhouse Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:15 AM to 12:30 PM. Classes are free and are taught by Tony Fettig, an experienced tai chi practitioner and instructor. Beginners are welcome. Come try out a class or just observe one. For more information, contact tai chi co-coordinators Lori Hoch at 239-302-0144 or Barbara Werner-Lubich at 410-409-5874. Article adapted from one by Kathleen Fifield for AARP.

AED’S LOCATIONS If you’re wondering what an AED is – and why they seem to be located in most offices and public buildings, you’re not alone. In fact, because these devices are now commonly available, more people than ever before are curious about them. So – just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…the end of the year is just about here – amazing. I would imagine that when we thought about our retirement years, we did not think that we would be so busy. Needing multiple calendars, having to decide which activity will I be able to fit in my schedule today – not “oh geesh, what can I do today?” Whichever activity you do decide to be a part of, enjoy your time in Tara Woods – retirement years can be the ‘best years’ of our lives if we choose. The Clubhouse looks so beautiful this time of year. We all pitched in (at least I hope so) and created a Florida winter wonderland. The Entertainers are working hard to create a show for your enjoyment. This year we have a couple of new faces who are working behind the scenes. Deborah Lanza and Sherry Kay decided to join us, and it has been fun working together for a common goal. Our family of Entertainers provided the pastries for the Craft Fair in early November. A big thank you to Lesley Krauss and Linda Kasdorf

for heading up this project for the Entertainers; also, thank you to all those bakers and those who provided the goodies we offered at our Bake Table at the Craft Fair. I would like to remind you all about the dates of our show – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 8th, 9th, and 10th. The Friday and Saturday will be 7:00 PM performances, and the Sunday performance will be at 2:00 PM. I do hope that you all make a point to join us in the audience. Our part is creating and performing; your part, which is just as important, is to be in the audience and applaud to show your support for the Entertainers and your fellow Tara-ites. As President of the Entertainers, I would like to extend our good wishes to you all for a Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year in 2024. Every minute you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Pat Dunning, Stage Manager, Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com
