PNP Siquijor on alert for Lenten, summer break

SIQUIJOR (PIA) – The Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) is on full alert to ensure the safety of both inhabitants and tourists on the island especially during these Lenten and summer seasons. SPPO Deputy Director for Administration Police Superintendent Enrique Belcina, in a monthly forum of the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators (SAID), said security measures are heightened following unconfirmed reports spreading in the social media that a group of suspected terrorists were spotted in the vicinity Central Visayas including the island of Siquijor. Belcina said intelligence personnel in all police stations provincewide are advised to tap the Barangay Intelligence Networks (BINs) and the barangay officials to activate monitoring particularly in coastline areas and those that are frequented by tourists. He said a platoon from the Philippine Army composed of 28 military personnel and another 16 personnel from the regional safety battalion are deployed in strategic areas surrounding the island to assist the existing local PNP forces. Security measures are also in place in Mt. Bandilaan where the annual Healing Festival is observed during the Holy Week. Checkpoints on 24/7 are set up to secure the visitors, he said. Meanwhile, the residents, business establishments, and resort owners are advised to be vigilant and be on guard especially that more tourists are flocking into the island to spend the Holy Week and summer. ASEAN advocacy team goes to Siquijor

SIQUIJOR (PIA) - - Information team from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and other line agencies will come here on April 19 for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2017 Multi-Sectoral Forum to be held at the Capital Square, Siquijor, Siquijor. Invited participants are the local government officials, heads of government agencies, information and tourism officers, students, representatives from the academe, business, agriculture and women sectors, ASEAN Siquijor Homestay awardees and barangay captains of the municipality of Siquijor. Prior to the forum, launching of the PIA Information Kiosk is also scheduled at the

arrival area of the town’s seaport where information, education and communication materials on ASEAN, Freedom of Information (FOI) and other programs and services of the government are made available. The forum aims to bring to Siquijor what ASEAN is and why it matters to Siquijodnons, especially that Siquijor is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. Other topics to be discussed are the ASEAN 2017 Chairmanship by PIA Staff Director Belina SB Gapul, Freedom of Information (FOI) by Michelle Arianne Manza of Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), Priority Programs and Thrusts of the Duterte Administration by the Office of the Presidential Assistant for

the Visayas (OPAV), and “Ambisyon Natin 2040” by Regional Director Efren Carreon of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). PIA Director General Harold Clavite will grace the event and serve as the Keynote speaker. The Philippines assumes chairmanship of the ASEAN 2017 which also coincides with its 50th year anniversary. Anchored on the theme, “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” ASEAN 2017 is bent on becoming an avenue for education, cooperation and stronger partnerships amongst its member countries. SSC, DOST hold IP Rights seminar on traditional health practices

SIQUIJOR, (PIA) – The Siquijor State College (SSC) and the provincial center of the Department of Science and Technology (DOSTPSTC) conducted a series of community education workshops on traditional health practices and sessions on training seminar on intellectual property rights as part of the research paper conducted by SSC. The event took place in three different barangays in Candanay Norte, Pasihagon and Luyang in the municipality of Siquijor where traditional health practices have been widely practiced and where there is abundant source of traditional health medicines. Siquijor State College through its project leader Dr. Josel Mansueto organized the event and supported by DOST Siquijor PSTC through Provincial Science and Technology Director (PSTD Engr. Mario de la Peña. The community education workshop on community health was organized with communities involved as part of the education, transparency and acquisition of consent to share the information to the public. On another development, the local community were taught on the basics of intellectual property rights and were explained how these law can be applied to the traditional health practices. Atty. Gilbert Arbon, PSTD of DOST Negros Oriental, served as the resource speaker who gave a presentation on the topic. After the discussion, Dr. Mansueto along with project assistants showed to the local community the output of their research during the “pangalap season”. The community were then explained to give their consent to publish or not to publish relevant information pertaining to the traditional medicines located in their community. Dr. Mansueto explained that the team needed the approval of the local healers and the community to post the information on the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library on Health. The folk healers and the local community agreed to publish the needed information on the internet. 4Ps beneficiaries start receiving rice subsidy

SIQUIJOR (PIA) -- Beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Central Visayas have started receiving their monthly P600 rice assistance/subsidy for the month of January 2017. The rice subsidy is a commitment of President Rodrigo RoaDuterte made during his first State of the Nation Address in 2016 to ensure that all Filipinos be free from hunger and poverty in the amount of P600,which shall be given to all beneficiaries of PantawidPamilya. For the six payouts covering the December 2016 to January 2017 compliance, 213,502 active households in Central Visayas are expected to receive the rice subsidy. The rice subsidy will be paid bimonthly along with the education and health grant. Of the total active beneficiaries in CentalVisayas, 148,805 are from Cebu

Province, 60,858 from Bohol Province, and 3,839 from Siquijor. “These beneficiaries have started receiving the rice subsidy last March 9, 2017 while there is an ongoing pay-out all thoughout the region,” said Dir. Ma. Evelyn Macapobre, DSWD-7 Regional Director. PantawidPamilya is a social protection program of the national government. It invests in the health and education of poor households primarily of children aged 18 and below. Households shall receive their cash grant provided that they comply with the program conditionalities. These conditions include school attendance of at least 85 percent per month for children enrolled in the elementary or high school. Children aged 5 and below would need to undergo preventive check-up as

mandated by the Department of Health (DoH), while children enrolled in the elementary must receive deworming pills twice within the school year. On the other hand, pregnant women must receive pre and post-natal care based on DoH’s protocol. Lastly, parent/s or guardians are required to attend the monthly Family Development Session (FDS). “We are hopeful that the additional cash grant will be used for its intended purpose. We will use FDS to ensure that the beneficiaries are informed of the relevant provision on rice subsidy,” Macapobre reiterated. The additional cash grant as Rice Assistance/Subsidy is included as part of the P72,115,230 cash grant budget approved for calendar year 2017.
