The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007. Comprising 68-acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuriesold live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the intersection of Highway 278 and the Cross Island Expressway. In the late 1990s, the Town of Hilton Head Island purchased the site and leased it to the Coastal Discovery Museum for 95 years. Construction of the 6,000-squarefoot hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, is known as the Discovery House, complete with permanent and temporary exhibits, a Kids Zone and gift shop. Sea Oats These tall, graceful, wheatlike plants parade up and down the twelve miles of Hilton Head’s Atlantic Ocean beachways, changing in color as the season advances from a deep green to a burnished gold. They may appear so beautiful as to invite picking for a dry arrangement – but don’t. They are protected by law because they protect our fragile dunes from erosion, and without their soilholding ability, our dunes would all too soon disappear. 14

Atlantic Bottlenose

Dolphins One of Hilton Head Island’s most popular residents, Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins are abundant in local waters. In fact, these incredible marine mammals share so many characteristics with humans it can be argued they are our underwater counterparts. One example is the way they give birth. Female dolphins give live birth and nurse their young for up to three years. Male calves often stay with the mother for up to five years and potentially for the rest of their lives, if female. In the wintertime, the Bottlenose population averages from 200 to 400 animals. Early spring through late fall, we are inundated with dolphins as females from all over the Southeastern coast make an annual trek to the area to give birth. Other females 18

The Official Guide January-April 2014

act as midwives and nannies, often taking turns watching over the young as the mother feeds. Males tag along, following the females wherever they go – yet another human trait! From a boat, you will often see the young calves swimming and playing with the other dolphins in the pod. Providing abundant food for the mothers, Lowcountry waters also give the young dolphins a fairly safe environment to practice swimming and hunting before moving on to other parts of the coast. Although they lack the gracefulness of an adult dolphin, the calves’ playfulness and energy tends to remind one of their own youth. HILTON HEAD NATIONAL (843) 842-5900 / golfhiltonheadnational.com From the moment the doors opened for business on November 1st, 1989, Hilton Head National quickly became a must play for annual visitors as well as local patrons. Golf experts and local residents alike continually recognize the National with accolades on a yearly basis. 2013 was no exception. Hilton Head National was the recipient of Bluffton Today’s “Best of Bluffton Award” for “Golf Course with Best Greens” as well as TripAdvisor’s “Certificate of Excellence,” given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor. Plus, LINKS magazine ranked Hilton Head National in the “Top 10 Courses of the Low Country” which included private courses. Hilton Head National is indeed unusual in that two of the game’s most heralded architects have collaborated to create this unique golf experience. Hall of Famer, Gary Player with over 200 golf designs in his international portfolio and Award Winning Bobby Weed, former PGA Tour design consultant, have routed 18 holes through some of ”the most beautiful 300 acres of tree rich Carolina bottom land“ that they both have ever encountered. With a combination of rolling greens, a variety of bunker complexes and generous fairways, Hilton Head National is a player friendly course but can also test the best players from the Black tees. If you are a lover of the game of golf, you would remiss if you don’t list Hilton Head National on your golf itinerary. Find out why locals continue to call it, “The Best of the Best.“ 60 Hilton Head National Dr., Mainland on map. GPS location: 60 Hilton Head National Dr., Bluffton, SC. THE CRAZY CRAB The Crazy Crab boasts two picturesque waterfront locations on either end of Hilton Head Island.

may opt for the signature Steamed Seafood Pot or a combination platter. Several steak and chicken dishes are available, as well.

This longtime local favorite opened in 1984 on Highway 278 overlooking Jarvis Creek. Two years later, the second restaurant began serving hungry patrons in Harbour Town.

Steps away from the Harbour Town Playground in Sea Pines, with an enclosed outdoor play area and huge indoor saltwater aquarium at Jarvis Creek, kids are always welcome at these casual, familyfriendly establishments.

Destroyed by fire in 1998, the North-end Crazy Crab was rebuilt to twice its original size and now accommodates nearly 250 people inside the spacious, nauticalthemed restaurant, with another 80 seats outside on the deck. Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer similar menus featuring made-to-order Lowcountry specialties. Share a complimentary basket of freshly-made hushpuppies while enjoying a bowl of She Crab Soup, shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cake, oysters on the half shell or Caesar salad. During lunch, the variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood platters and daily specials are sure to please every palate. In the evening, the menu expands to include an even larger selection of appetizers and entrees, such as stuffed flounder, stuffed mushrooms and Alaskan king crab legs. From fresh fish and tender sea scallops to succulent shrimp and plump oysters, patrons may choose their seafood broiled, fried or steamed with a garden salad, corn-on-the-cob, coleslaw, onion rings, rice, baked potato or French fries on the side. Those who can’t make up their minds 28

The special “Minnow’s Menu“ includes macaroni & cheese, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and pizza with a selection of locally-made ice cream, homemade Key Lime pie and chocolate mud pie for dessert. According to co-owner Peter Kenneweg, the secret of the restaurants’ success is three-fold. “It’s more than one thing,” he explains. “It’s got to be good food, good service and the price has to be right.” The Crazy Crab restaurants have been local favorites for more than 29 years. A children’s menu, take-out and outdoor seating (at Jarvis Creek) are available. Reservations are not required, large groups welcome.

TIPS

PLAN AHEAD o Before heading out for a fun-filled day of shopping, look through the Official Guide and visit specific store websites for coupons and special offers to use on your excursion.

MAKE A LIST o Don’t make the mistake of leaving without the one thing you came for in the first place.

SHOP SMART o Maximize shopping time by going during the week, instead of weekends, when stores are less crowded. Also, shop early or late in the day to avoid possible mid-day heat.

THE MORE THE MERRIER o Shopping with friends or family is always more fun and can lead to a more efficient shopping trip. For instance, when one person is trying on clothes, the others can be getting additional items and acting as fashion consultants.

HAVE FUN o A bargain hunting trip is a wonderful family activity with something for everyone. After a day of shopping, everyone will have fun comparing all of the great deals they found. January-April 2014 The Official Guide
