W

ith Savannah’s spectacular spring season comes an array of blooming beauty, with gardenias, jasmine and azaleas breathing life to our oak-lined streets and squares. Warm weather and calm breezes make this one of the best times to visit Georgia’s First City, where 17th and 18th century buildings are home to some of the most stunning shops, delightful restaurants, bustling bars, cozy inns and inventive art galleries, where history and culture collide to create something truly beautiful. With one of the largest in the country, Savannah’s Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, more than 200 years after its founding in 1733. But it’s not just the setting and abundance of history that makes Savannah so stunning; it’s also all that you can do while you’re here! In March, the city fills with hundreds of thousands of people for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade kicks off on March 17 at 10:15 a.m. and winds around the Historic District through the scenic city streets. There are all kinds of traditional ceremonies, family festivals and entertaining celebrations leading up to the 6 SAVANNAH SCENE March-April 2016

Laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733, it is one of the four original squares and marked one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in early Savannah. Renamed in 1883 to honor the Telfair family, it is the only square honoring a family rather than an individual. It also contains a tribute to the Girl Scouts. Barnard & President St.

Built at the same time as Warren Square, Washington Square once bordered the original Trustees’ Garden, where colonists grew a variety of experimental crops. Today it is the northeast ernmost square in the city. Houston & St. Julian St.

Savor Savannah:

5 F

foods you MUST try in town

rom salty southern meals to sugary sippin’s and late night nibbles, Savannah’s culinary scene is vast. But you don’t have to spend a fortune to sample some of The Hostess City of the South’s specialties. Between your scenic strolls along the Savannah River and stops in the city squares, make sure to indulge with these popular plates:

1) Fried Green Tomatoes

This simple golden side peaked in popularity when the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” came out in 1991. Though it’s been said to be southern fare for years, this dish has its own secret backstory, emerging from Jewish immigrants in the Northeast and Midwest before becoming a star of the South. Some of the first recipes found published on this traditional tomato dish were in Jewish cookbooks, before showing up in cookbooks in the Midwest and newspapers. No matter where they’re from, we’re just glad they’re here and you can find them almost anywhere. So forget the fried pickles and try this crispy creation!

2) Shrimp & Grits

A staple on any Southern table, Shrimp & Grits is another hot dish that you won’t want to miss. This regional specialty hails from the Lowcountry, with origins in the Native American Muskogee tribe who ground corn in a stone mill, giving it a gritty texture. It wasn’t until 1985 when Craig Claiborne of The New York Times visited North Carolina and published a recipe about them, that the Shrimp & Grits we know today gained widespread popularity. From hole-in-the-wall diners to upscale eateries all across the South, this plate is made many different ways, each pleasing palates of many different people.

3) Chatham Artillery Punch

When you’re in a town where you’re welcome to carry your drink out on the street, you might be tempted to get anything and do it, but hold fast brothers and sisters! Beers are great and your 14 SAVANNAH SCENE March-April 2016

favorite cocktail is just that, but when in Georgia’s First City, thou shall do it like those before thee—with Chatham Artillery Punch, a champagne cocktail that some say has stuck around since the colonial period. Named after and first formulated by the Chatham Artillery, Georgia’s oldest military unit, this punch comes on strong. With a mix of champagne, rum, brandy, and bourbon, it’s the perfect drink to request while you’re here.

4) Pralines You can’t just stroll down River Street or stop by City Market without smelling sweet aromas sifting through the air around the candy kitchens, where fresh pralines are made constantly. Though they’re known for their caramel color and crunchy pecans in the United States, these delights actually hail from France, where they’re much firmer, made with almonds and caramelized sugar. When they were brought over by French settlers to Louisiana, local chefs substituted the ingredients for the ample pecans and sugar cane. They’re in abundance here in the Hostess City of the South, so be sure to grab some sugar when you’re in Savannah!

5) Peaches While you’re looking for something sweet, don’t forget to grab a Georgia Peach! Franciscan monks first introduced these succulent snacks to Georgia’s coast in 1571, which continued to flourish until 1928 when production peaked with about 8 million bushels. Though they might not be Georgia’s number one export anymore, they’re definitely woven into the fabric of the state. Whether you’re in the mood for peach ice cream, peach cobbler or just some fresh peaches from a roadside stand, be sure to get some of this fuzzy fruit while you’re here! savannah.com

In the 1990s, the late Mrs. Jeannie Cohen from Hilton Head taught her how to make bulrush style baskets. “I knew how to make both baskets, so I combined the Beaufort bulrush style and sweetgrass to make Jery Sweetgrass Baskets,” she explains. “Now I am the only person doing the bulrush style baskets.” by Andrea Six Culture and creativity collide at City Market, where buildings house some of the most amazing artistic talent Georgia’s First City has to offer. Amid a variety of painters inside, behind bustling bistros and bars, are two women who have brought their own unique flavors and creations to this artistic scene in Savannah.

Jery Bennett Taylor Lowcountry basket making had all but ceased at the beginning of the 20th century, until women like Jery Bennett Taylor devoted themselves to keeping this craft alive, along with the legacy and heritage of her Gullah culture. Inside Jery’s studio, visitors will find an abundance of hand woven baskets, which vary in shape, size and style. From traditional bread, fruit and rice fanning baskets, Jery’s creations can be as little as a small cup, bracelet and plate of food or big enough to hold firewood or blankets. Their decorative flair includes knots, double s handles, triple Egyptian eyes, elephant ears and rope tops. A native of Mount Pleasant, Jery started making baskets in 1958 when she lived on Boone Hall Plantation with her family. Robin Sterns Across the street, in her gallery above Belford’s, Robin Sterns has taken a tradition and given it her own twist. After working with stained glass for 30 years as a hobby, Robin decided to try something different with it—what she calls glass collage. “There’s no solder that you’d see in a traditional stain glass piece,” she reveals. “It feels lighter, more modern and more contemporary than traditional stained glass and it’s also really chunky and textured.” To do this, Robin makes her own sea glass, by cutting thick stained glass and throwing it in a rock tumbler with sand and water so it comes out frosty and rounded. With this technique, she’s able to make everything from beautiful lightweight earrings and necklaces to bangles out of wine bottles, as well as bright artwork that can sit in shadowboxes or hang brilliantly in windows. Her luminous gallery is upstairs in City Market’s Franklin Ward South building at 219 W. Bryan St. in Studio 207.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES

id you know that more than 40 percent of 2,500 buildings accounted for in Savannah had architectural or historical significance? Our fair city is a dream come true for those who appreciate 18th and 19th century architectural styles and what makes them unique.

ITALIANATE

ITALIANATE The Italianate style was inspired by the farm houses of northern Italy and is depicted by low garbled roofs with wide overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets, and entrance towers and roundhead windows with hood moldings. Most examples also feature cast-iron fronts and detailed entrances. Savannah example: Mercer House

FEDERAL The Federal style is depicted by prominent square or rectangular exteriors with slender curved iron stair railings and Palladian or Venetian windows. Savannah example: The Davenport House

REGENCY The Regency style is depicted by triangular pediments, semi-circular stairs, articulated win dow openings, ionic columns and classical alcove entrance ways. Savannah example: Telfair Museum of Art

GEORGIAN The Georgian style is depicted by symmetrical square facades with hipped roofs. Chimneys are built on the ends and quoins often adorn the corners. Savannah example: The Olde Pink House Restaurant

ROMANESQUE REVIVAL The Romanesque Revival style is depicted by arch and dome construction, Corinthian column capitols and roof balustrades. Savannah example: The Cotton Exchange

GOTHIC REVIVAL The Gothic Revival style is depicted by crafted details on pinnacles, chimneys and large welcoming entry hall ways. Often used on churches of the period. Savannah example: Temple Mickve Israel GREEK REVIVAL GREEK REVIVAL The Greek Revival style is depicted by gabled portico or temple facade of one or two stories with columns of the Greek Doric or Iconic orders. Construction is post and beam, and roofs are designed with slopes and may be disguised behind heavy cornices and parapets. Savannah example: First Baptist Church

SECOND FRENCH EMPIRE The Second French Empire style emphasizes picturesque vertical accents on building tops like chimneys and corner pinnacles. Also featured are turrets and domes reminiscent of French Renaissance architecture in the seventeenth century. Savannah example: Hamilton-Turner House
