CEO MESSAGE Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu My sincere greetings to all my brothers and sisters around the world. Fasting as one nation, starting together and breaking our fast together, praying together and constantly helping each other to better ourselves during the month is indeed a blessing from Allah and increases our sense of unity. During this month, Allah gives us continuous chances to change and it is up to us to utilise this opportunity. As this is the month of reflection, the month of resolutions, and the month of discipline we should deal with it as such by strengthening our relationship with Allah by dedicating more time to worship Him, reading the Qur’an, being good to our parents, controlling our tongues and our behaviour, then aiming to maintain that throughout our lives and not just during the month of Ramadhan. Here at Islam Channel we have arranged a series of programmes for you, including religious and inspirational shows to help uplift

your Iman during this holy month, and along with the launch of our new channel that is being launched, Islam Channel Urdu, with its unique line up of programmes, we hope that you enjoy spending your Ramadhan with the Islam Channel family. We thank Allah for giving us the opportunity to witness and experience another Ramadhan, giving us another opportunity to gain His pleasure, mercy and forgiveness, and I pray that Allah helps us to make the most out of this month. May you have a blessed Ramadhan, and Ramadhan Mubarak to you all.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

“O You who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you - so that perhaps you will be pious.” (2:183) This command from Allah alludes to fasting in the holy month of Ramadhan, a time where the major Shayateen are locked up, the gates of hell-fire are closed, and the Muslims unite together , in the attempt to reignite their relationship with Allah, the Mighty and Exalted. The virtues of Ramadhan were elaborated upon by our beloved Prophet (pbuh), when he mentioned the following; “…Whoever fasts in Ramadhan motivated by belief and in anticipation of the reward will be forgiven his past wrong actions.” (Bukhari and Muslim) Unlike the other acts of worship in Islam, Fasting is unique in that its basis is not what to do, but what not to do. As is known, food, drink and relations are suspended from sunrise to sunset. But one should not be deceived into thinking fasting comprises of actions of the limbs only; for the tongue must also be used productively. Consider the advice of the Prophet (PBUH), when he said: “Speak neither obscenely nor too loudly; and if someone seeks to curse him or fight with him, let him say, ‘I am fasting.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

12

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

The Wonders Of Hidden Worship As well as the fact that fasting requires us to limit actions which would normally be deemed permissible, it’s special virtue lies in the fact that, as an act of worship, it cannot necessarily be monitored from others. Because worship consists of action, unless it’s deliberately hidden, it’s usually known by others. Fasting on the other hand, being comprised on ‘non-acts’ or abstinence from acts, is more or less hidden from others. This can be the case whether the fast is optional (outside of Ramadhan), or the compulsory fasts of Ramadhan itself. It is almost impossible to observe a person at all times, ensuing that person has not secretly ate, drank or broken the fast in other ways. In the end, only Allah knows who fasts, and the reward is from Allah alone.

A Special Reward From Allah A special connection between Allah and the fast is further strengthened in the famous Hadith Qudsi, where Allah has said to the Prophet (pbuh), “Every action of the son of Adam is for himself except for fasting. It is Mine and I repay it.” (Bukhari) The fast belongs out-rightly to Allah, and we are in fact only honored to be the ones to share in it. But the reward is of such significance that its joys are reserved for us in the hereafter - a reward that will bring unparalleled delights!

A Gate In Paradise Ar-Rayyan, the name given to the gate in Paradise that only the fasters will pass through, may be translated into English as ‘the Quenching’, ‘the Source of Irrigation’, or other similar meanings. These terms bring connotations of plentitude, freshness and nourishment, and as such the significance of the gate becomes clear. Seemingly Allah has promised all these things to those who through the act of fasting, refrained from indulgences and from satisfying themselves. And as the fast is in reality something specifically for Allah, the Exalted, can it be of any wonder that despite its seeming emptiness of ‘non-acts’ and an empty stomach, that the reward of the fast is one of unlimited quenching and irrigation? We are informed of the special gift for fasting for Allah’s sake in the following Hadeeth; “The one who fasts has two joys in which to delight: when he breaks his fast, he rejoices; and when he meets his Lord, he rejoices in his fast.” (Muslim) Subhan Allah! So, when we break the fast and quench our thirst and hunger, let us remember the gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan that we hope to pass through, and the meeting with our Lord that would surely be the greatest pleasure of all. May Allah increase us in fasting, and may He count us among those who enter Jannah, through the gate of ‘arRayyaan’.

Pakistan’s Best Kept Secret Did you know there is a multi-award winning charity, doing life-changing work in one of the most educationally deprived countries in the world? That charity is The Citizens Foundation which is recognised by experts as one of the most effective educational charities of our time. While other Muslim countries continue to make advancements in education, Pakistan has lagged behind with over 25mn children out of school. This Ramadan you can make a difference by donating to a charity which supports the tenants of Islam in promoting an equal society and upholding the rights of women. This Ramadan sponsor a child who would otherwise never see the inside of a classroom from as little £7 a month

PREPARING FOR RAMADHAN Roll up your sleeves and tighten your waist belts, as one cannot reap the fruits and harvest the maximum out of this fertile month without a sincere intention and a serious approach.

In this month many are saved from hellfire, and the doors of Good are increased and are wide open, and a caller calls out:

‘Oh seeker of good come to the obedience of your Lord. Oh seeker of evil stop and repent from your disobedience!’ And although the Shayatin (Devils) are locked up, we must know that they still have influence over those who approach them. An intelligent Muslim will always utilise all the means and aim to achieve the highest possible results, as our Prophet PBUH told us,

‘Allah loves when one of you does something, that they do it well.’ We must understand that Ramadhan is a month of discipline, and we must always ask ourselves are we really disciplining our16

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

selves if we abstain from our bad deeds for one month then go back to doing that bad deed for 11 months? Understanding what Ramadhan is all about really does help the continuity and sustainability of the good actions that we do during Ramadhan. We must know that Ramadhan is a month of change, it should be a stage where we measure our spiritual progress and set new resolutions for ourselves, and below are examples of how we can do that.

Intention The most important point is to purify our intentions when fasting, as we fast for Allah and only Allah, not because our parents tell us to, or to appear religious in front of our friends or pressure from our community, and in return for sincerely fasting for Allah and Him accepting our fast we will receive His forgiveness, His Mercy, and rewards from 70 to infinity depending on our level of sincerity.

Repentance Repentance is the essence of rectifying our affairs with Allah. We must understand that Allah’s mercy is infinite and limitless, and we must always repent sincerely for our sins, as sins hinder our progress and affect our relationship with Allah. Repentance has three steps: 1. 2. 3.

4.

Admitting and accepting the mistake Regretting doing that mistake Not doing that mistake again… and a fourth condition applies if the sin involves the right of another being (Stealing from, hitting, swearing, backbiting, abusing someone else etc) Rectifying your affair with the other (apologising, giving back or paying for what you stole, asking for forgiveness from the one you wronged etc)

Fasting Getting used to fasting before Ramadhan comes not only prepares you mentally and physically, but is an established Sunnah of our beloved Prophet PBUH. ‘Usamah Ibn Zayd asked the Prophet [pbuh]: ‘O Messenger of Allah, why don’t you observe fasting in other months as you do in Sha‘ban?’ The Messenger responded:

`This is a month most people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadhan, the month in which [the annual deeds of humanity] are raised up to The Lord of the worlds. So, I want my deeds to be raised while I am fasting’.

Food Getting used to eating less before the month of Ramadhan comes in is a big bonus, many Muslims fall into extravagance in food during Ramadhan. Off course after fasting from dawn to dusk one will be extremely hungry, but don’t you notice that at the beginning of the month everyone is energetic and passionate, and nearer to the middle of the month the energy levels start to fade away. It has been medically proven that fasting is meant to increase the energy levels and not decrease them, so why does this happen? The rational explanation to this is the way that we eat. If you do not take it easy on yourself when breaking the fast the sugar levels and fat levels will shock your body, and this causes an increase in weight, laziness and fatigue, and in doing so, all of the health benefits gained from fasting will be countered.

Planning It is very useful to have a moment (or moments) with yourself to plan your Ramadhan. Think about your character and your worship, and set yourself targets and goals, and be as reasonable and as realistic as possible. The minimum anyone one of us should aim for during Ramadhan is to complete reading the Quran, removing one bad habit and starting a new good one. Ramadhan is the season of blessings, and we pray that Allah makes your Ramadhan full of it. It is the month of mercy, and we pray Allah grants you His mercy. It is the month of change, and we pray that Allah helps us all to change for the better for His sake.

HEALTH & RAMADHAN Sourced from Dr. Farouk Haffejee. Below are common symptoms and causes that may occur during Ramadhan.

Due to the change of diet and routine during Ramadhan, it is typical to encounter some common problems related to health during this period. It is essential during this blessed month that you remain extra careful and are aware of the remedies that may be beneficial for you, to have a comfortable, successful and enjoyable Ramadhan.

Muscles Cramp Causes: Inadequate intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium foods. Remedy: Eat foods rich in the above minerals e.g. vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat and dates. Caution: Those on high blood pressure medication and with kidney stone problems should consult their doctor.

Low Blood Sugar Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache and palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar. Causes: In non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially at suhoor. The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop. Remedy: Eat something at suhoor and limit sugar-containing foods and drinks. Caution: Diabetics may need to adjust their medication in Ramadhan, consult your doctor. 20

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

Headache Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep and hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with “low blood pressure”, the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before iftar. Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadhan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganise your schedule during the Ramadhan so as to have adequate sleep.

Lethargy (low blood pressure) Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from a sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with “low blood pressure”. This tends to occur towards the afternoon. Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake. Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake. Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadhan. They should consult their doctor.

Peptic ulcers, heartburn, gastritis & hiatus hernia Increased acid levels in the empty stomach in Ramadhan aggravate the above conditions. It presents as a burning feeling in the stomach area under the ribs and can extend up to the throat. Spicy foods, coffee, and cola drinks worsen these conditions. Medications are available to control acid levels in the stomach. People with proven peptic ulcers and hiatus hernia should consult their doctor well before Ramadhan. Children are not expected to fast until the age of puberty. However, many children desire to take part in fasting along with their family from a young age. Although this can be challenging for them, there are many benefits in allowing and encouraging your children to fast from a young age. Fasting, just for a few hours a day, will teach children a degree of self-control that they might not exercise outside of Ramadhan and will also help to mentally and physically prepare them in a progressive manner as they get older and allows them to develop their spiritual connection with Allah from an early age. Let us look at some of the ways in which we can encourage our children to get involved in Ramadhan.

Start when they’re young Try and encourage their involvement in Ramadan to instil a love and appreciation for the month from a young age.

Small dosages Fasting only becomes obligatory after puberty so when the children are young, try out partial fasts during the day. Let them “fast” from breakfast till lunch, then gradually increase this so they can get used to the idea as they get older.

Visit the Masjid Try and take your older children to the masjid at the time of iftar. A communal breaking of the fast will help bring about the spirit of Ramadan as will praying in jama’a. 30

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

Distract them Remember to find a balance between pushing them too far and giving in too easily. Do not force children to fast the entire day if they are struggling as there is no obligation for them to do so.

Feed them wisely Excessively sugary and fatty foods will not benefit their health during Ramadan. Aim for a well-balanced meal to provide long-lasting energy.

Change their habits As we adults try to reform our lives and character, so too should our children. Try and change your children’s daily activities to be more in keeping with Islam.

Company Try and take your fasting children to visit their young friends who are also fasting. This will help build a companionship and can help them encourage one another. Make sure the younger ones are conscious of their older siblings or friends and are not showing off their food unintentionally.

Above all, remember to use Ramadan as a time to prepare your young ones for when they are older. Instil a love and appreciation for the month and Insha Allah the rest will follow suit as they grow up. Acknowledge and reward their efforts and do what you can do to make their attempts easier. May Allah (SWT) reward them and us for trying, ameen. Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

My Ramadhan. It hasn’t always been easy. I reverted to the Deen of Islam 3 years ago (2012) this year Alhamdulillah, coincidentally the day before Ramadhan.

I

had no idea that by reverting at that time it would become obligatory upon me to fast the blessed month of Ramadhan, but despite this I endeavoured to fast the whole month. I made mistakes, I wasn’t praying along with fasting and I didn’t always break my fast with halal food but I made it through. Now this year, 3 years on it’s a good opportunity for me to reflect. I work full time and I still find it an emaan boost and a blessing from Allah swt to be healthy enough to fast the month of Ramadhan. Each year I notice more and more people return to our Lord before the month has even arrived and it truly makes me appreciate this time.

36

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

In the UK, suhoor (the time at which you eat your last meal) is early. Usually around 2.30am to 3.30am. For someone that works full time this can sometimes be a struggle. I have always tried to take the view that life should fit around my Islam and not the other way around. This is even truer when it comes to Ramadhan. The first thing I try and do when I wake up is make wudu and pray tahajjud. I may not make the tahajjud prayer at other times of the year but in Ramadhan doing extra ibadaah (worship) like this is really beneficial. It keeps you focussed on your Lord. For sehr, I usually have some wholemeal toast, scrambled egg whites and a litre of water. I try to eat healthy protein rich food in the morning especially at this time to make sure I stay fuller for longer. The water is essential even if I don’t get to eat any food. Then I’ll sit and watch some kind of Islamic reflection. Ramadhan is a great time for lecture series and online TV programmes with an Islamic perspective. I then wait until Fajr comes in and pray. After I wake up following Fajr, the day rolls on as usual. Working in a non-Muslim environment you get a lot of questions about Islam during Ramadhan, people can’t understand how you can do up to 16 hours with no food or water. I try my best to answer their questions and remind them that Islam isn’t just for one month, it’s a lifestyle. Allah does not burden a soul beyond that which he can bear and Ramadhan is no different. While your belly may be empty, Allah swt is filling your soul with nourishment Alhamdulillah. That’s a feeling you can only understand if you’re Muslim and you have love for Allah swt and His Messenger (saw).

When I get home from work I’m usually exhausted physically and mentally. I try and take a small nap to recover before getting started on making iftar. As much as I love going round to friend’s houses for iftar, it can be difficult especially at the start of Ramadhan. When I do eat iftar by myself though, it reminds me of those early days when I first reverted. How eager I was to take that first sip of cool refreshing water and how after a few bites of food I was already full subhanAllah. I try and keep the meals I eat small and nutritious, there’s always a lot of fruit and vegetables in my house over the period of Ramadhan and not much meat because it takes longer to cook. I like to give food to my neighbours as part of the Sunnah, it’s always nice to share during Ramadhan especially when Muslims are so ‘visible’. It’s important in everyday life, especially in Ramadhan to conduct yourself with the best adab (character). From my experience it is mostly the character of Muslims that invites people to the deen (religion). When iftar is done I often sit and read the Qur’an. Completing the Qur’an in the time of Ramadhan is one of the goals of every Muslim during Ramadhan. Sometimes it’s quite difficult for me but I persevere as for every word recited there is reward in it and extra reward for those that struggle Alhamdulillah.

I love my deen, I love my Lord and I love his Messenger (saw) and Ramadhan is such an important time to reflect on that. May Allah swt accept our efforts this year and grant us many more opportunities to make up for our short comings, Ameen.

Ramadhan is a month of countless opportunities. A Muslim can redeem his or herself from their weaknesses, and experience a level of closeness to Allah they would have not yet achieved outside of this blessed month. It is also a month that reminds us of our ultimate purpose, to be devoted servants of Allah, and so we try to maximize our worship for His sake.

40

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

T

here is a jewel within this month, however, a precious opportunity that, if a person failed to attain it, would have surely been deprived of much goodness, a night unrivalled by any other night during the year, a night where the seal of Prophet-hood began and where the Quran was revealed to mankind. Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Destiny. Such is its importance, that a whole chapter of the Quran is dedicated to Laylatul Qadr; Allah says: ‘Verily! We have send it (this Qur’an) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree), And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is? The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e 83 years and 4 months). Therein descend the angels and the Ruh (Jibrael), by Allah’s permission with All decrees. Peace! (All that night, there is peace and goodness from Allah to His Believing slaves) until the appearance of the dawn”. No other day or night is given a high precedence in having a whole Surah dedicated to it, whether that was the day in which the religion was completed or the days in which the Muslims migrated, both of which were turning point moments in Islamic history. The precise date when Laylatul Qadr occurs in each year is not known, and this is because of the Hadith were the Prophet peace be upon him said: Abu Salama reported: “We discussed amongst ourselves Laylatul Qadr. I came to Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) who was a friend of mine and said to him: Would you not go with us to the garden of date trees? He went out with a cloak over him. I said to him: Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) making mention of Laylatul Qadr? He said: Yes, (and added) we were observing i’tikaf with the Messenger of Allah (may

peace be upon him) in the middle ten days of Ramadan, and came out on the morning of the twentieth and the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) addressed us and said: I was shown Laylatul Qadr, but I forgot (the exact night) or I was caused to forget it, so seek it in the last ten odd (nights)…” This in itself is a blessing from Allah. It means a Muslim cannot maximize his worship for one night and be complacent on the other nights; rather the Muslim works to their full potential on all of the odd numbered nights, gaining greater emaan and love of Allah in the process. However, it is a night that we should seek in the last 10 nights of Ramadhan: Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) and Ibn Numair reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “Look for Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.” Allah, the Mighty and Exalted says of this night is that it is better than a thousand months which is approximately 83 years. This means 1000 months or 83 years of worshipping Allah. No other community before us were ever given a night such as this one. Because of this one night, a person can be rewarded what is virtually a lifetime’s service to Allah. A reward that none of us would have ever attained if not for Allah’s mercy in granting us this night. Laylatul Qadr not only provides us with the means to gain huge reward, but more importantly, to gain the forgiveness of Allah ‘Azzawajal. “Whoever stands in prayer and Ibaadah on the night of Power with sincere faith and with sincere hope of gaining reward, his previous sins are forgiven.” May Allah Ta ‘ala gives us the guidance and ability to seek this month and to obtain the reward of worshipping Him during this night and accept us in Al-Jannah. Ameen 1. Surat Al-Qadr 3. Sahih Muslim 2. Sahih Muslim 4. Targheeb from Bukhari and Muslim

FAQ’s about Ramadhan Main Source: www.islamweb.net

01

Why do we fast and what is the wisdom behind fasting?

Muslims fast in Ramadhan because Allah orders us in the Quran, saying: “O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).” [Al Baqarah, 183] The main reason we fast is to obey Allah, and there are also many reasons to it that bring benefit to ourselves. The word “Sawm” in the Arabic language means “to abstain”, and from the many wisdoms of fasting is self-discipline, to abstain from the main pleasures of this world and remind ourselves the reason why we are here. Fasting also brings with it many health benefits.

02

What happens if I am forgetful and I eat whilst I’m fasting?

The preponderant opinion of scholars is that if a fasting person eats or drinks out of forgetfulness, his fasting is valid because the Prophet peace be upon him, said: “If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks, then he should complete his fast for He is Allah Who fed him and gave him drink.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] . This ruling comprises all forms of fasting whether obligatory or voluntary. Therefore, if this happens to someone who is offering a fast that was intended upon a vow, he should complete his fasting as a matter of obligation as in Ramadhan. This is not only permissible but obligatory.

03

Why does Ramadhan begin on a different day each year?

Because Ramadhan is a lunar month, it begins about eleven days earlier each year. Throughout a Muslim’s lifetime, Ramadan will fall both during winter months, when the days are short, and summer months, when the days are long and the fast is more difficult. In this way, the difficulty of the fast is evenly distributed between Muslims living in the northern and southern hemisphere.

04

What am I supposed to do if I don’t wake up for suhoor (pre-dawn meal) on time? Do you still fast that day or should you make up fasting for that day after the Ramadhan is over?

If you did not wake up for suhoor, you should still maintain your fast since it is not invalidated if you fail to take your suhoor. In other words, suhoor is not an absolute prerequisite for the validity of fast. However, it is highly recommended and has tremendous blessings.

05

If one is feeling faint, is dehydrated or is in a position that is forcing them to compromise their fast, what should they do?

Whoever is obliged to break his fast during the day may break it with anything that is adequate to his need. Then, he should stop eating and drinking for the rest of the fasting day and make up for this day afterwards. Whoever has no urgent excuse should complete his fast.

44

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

06

What is the ruling of having an injection whilst fasting?

It is permissible for a fasting person to take intramuscular and intravenous injections by day in Ramadhan. However, it is impermissible for a fasting person to take nutritional injections by day in Ramadhan because this is like eating and drinking. Taking these injections is considered a trick to break one’s fast in Ramadhan. If it is possible to take intramuscular and intravenous injections by night, this is preferable.

07

What is the ruling on giving up fasting for the sake of physical training?

There is no doubt that fasting Ramadan is obligatory for everyone who is competent for religious assignments and has the ability to carry them out. It is impermissible to give up fasting in Ramadan unless there is a sharia-approved excuse, such as travel, illness, disability, etc., or due to other impediments, such as menstruation or post-partum bleeding for women. Allah Almighty Says: “So whoever among you is ill or on a journey (during them) - then an equal number of days (are to be made up). And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom (as substitute) of feeding a poor person (each day).” [Quran 2: 184] Thus, it is impermissible to abandon fasting because of sport training sessions, as it is not one of the Sharee’ah-approved excuses in this respect.

08

Does swallowing mucus nullify one’s fast?

According to Muslim scholars, the sound opinion is that swallowing mucus does not nullify one’s fasting, particularly if one forgetfully swallows it or swallows it involuntarily. Allah Says: “…(Allah) has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty...” [Quran 22:78] Yet, it is better for the fasting person to guard oneself against swallowing mucus as much as possible.

09

If one encounters bleeding in their mouth whilst fasting, what should they do?

When someone experiences bleeding upon rinsing his mouth while fasting, he is obliged to spit the blood out, and it is not permissible for him to swallow it, as swallowing blood invalidates the fast.

10

Can a person who suffers from a curable sickness break his fast in Ramadan?

If someone is already sick or has become sick (in Ramadan), he is allowed to break his fast in Ramadan if fasting might delay his recovery or worsen his sickness. Similarly, a sick person may break his fast if he cannot delay the time of taking medicine until night. Allah Says: “So whoever among you is ill or on a journey (during them) then an equal number of days (are to be made up). And upon those who are able (to fast, but with hardship) - a ransom (as substitute) of feeding a poor person (each day).” [Quran 2: 184] If the sickness is curable, by Allah’s will, then the sick person must make up for the missed days after he recovers, as stated by the aforementioned verse. If the sickness is incurable, the sick person shall feed a poor person per each day he misses.

11

Can I visit the dentist during Ramadhan?

Yes, you may have your teeth cleaned and fixed whilst you are fasting, as long as you are careful not to swallow any blood or medication during this time.

Calculate your Zakaah What is Zakaah? Zakaah is one of the five pillars of Islam and a compulsory act of worship that requires Muslims who own wealth at or over a certain threshold (called the Nisab*) to donate a portion of their qualifying wealth, typically 2.5%, to eligible recipients. It is a right the poor have over the rich. Zakaah benefits the giver as well as the receiver.

Who pays Zakaah? In order to pay Zakaah, a Muslim must be adult, sane and possess the Nisab; a minimum amount of wealth for an entire year. If your net assets equal or exceed the Nisab then Zakaah is due at 2.5% of your total net assets.

Who receives Zakaah? The Holy Qur’an (Chapter 9, Verse 60) tells us who may benefit from Zakaah: • • • •

The poor The destitute Administrators of Zakaah New Muslims facing hardship

• • •

Muslims who are unable to pay their debt Travellers who do not have enough money to return home People working in the path of Allah (SWT)

What type of wealth does Zakaah include? Assets to include in your Zakaah calculation are cash (on hand and in bank accounts), shares, pensions, gold, silver, business goods, crops and cattle. You do not need to count personal items such as your home, furniture, cars, food, clothing, which are not used for business purposes.

When should I pay Zakaah? Zakaah becomes payable as soon as the Nisab (minimum amount of wealth) has been held for one lunar year.

Can I pay my Zakaah in advance? Zakaah can be spread throughout the year, for example by setting up a monthly direct debit. However, the total amount payable must be paid by the due date.

I have liabilities, should I include them? Certain liabilities can be deducted from your Zakatable assets before calculating how much Zakaah you owe. These include outstanding or overdue living expenses such as a rent payment or utility bill, as well as debts.

52

Ramadhan Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

* What is ‘Nisab’? To be liable for Zakaah, one’s wealth must amount to more than a threshold figure, termed the “Nisab”. The Nisab was set by the Prophet Muhammad and is calculated at a rate equivalent to 87.48 grams of Gold and 612.36 grams of Silver.
