From my Corner

vast. But still so much of it all!! I usually pick something up — eyeliner, nail polish, blush — but I’m not a makeup person. I’ve said before, I have better things to do than spend hours in front of a mirror. I’m moving away from wearing makeup every day. During the summer I’m dark enough that I really don’t think I need it, unless I’m going out in the evening. Eye makeup is the only thing I’ve been wearing to work, and I’m trying to stop that. My reason? When I was young, I thought it was shaky hands that controlled the eyeliner that seemed to be so erratically drawn on little old

— Susan J. Coons ...makeup... Do any of you remember an old, frequently repeated skit on the Milton Berle Show where he said the word “makeup” and a little guy in a beret and wearing a cape would run on stage and smack Berle in the face with an over-size powder puff? Just thought I’d ask. I think it was Milton Berle. Speaking of makeup... My daughter and I found Sephora in NYC a few years ago, and now they have a store in Colonie Center. I find it overwhelming! Price ranges are from low to high and the selection is

ladies. I realize that isn’t necessarily so. Now that I’m one of those little (well, not so little) old ladies (lady?) I realize that there are other circumstances creating unruly liner. There is more flesh in the aging eyelid, and it comes with its own pound of wrinkles. It has to be pulled out to the side a bit in order for you to make a straight line with the eyeliner. Even if you can manage a straight line, all the wrinkles snap back into place when you let go. There’s that bumpy line! If you are farsighted, as I am, and wear glasses, you will face another problem. Okay, you’re holding the eyelid, and trying to draw the line. Not only do you have to master the art of drawing the line straight, you can only do this with your glasses off, making it difficult to see what you’re doing. In order to avoid the “wrinkled eyeliner syndrome”, I’m trying to let my friends, coworkers and public get used to seeing me without makeup. I know my vanity will eventually creep into the picture. I don’t know how long I can keep this up. A coworker said to me one day a couple of weeks ago, “You look so good today! You’re wearing a little makeup, aren’t you?” Yes, I was. Ah, well... At least she didn’t ask me what those little dark tracks were on my eyelids!
