The Courthouse Community Center in Salem in association with the Village of Salem Historian, Al Cormier, is pleased to once again offer its History Lecture Series on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. during the month of September. A resident of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Mark will speak about his current book, “Shadow Soldiers of the American Revolution – Loyalist Tales from New York to Canada”. To quote from Shadow Soldiers’ foreword, by Ambassador David Wilkins, former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, “Mr. Jodoin casts light on many British Americans who fought with valor and honor equal to American Patriots but have remained, for many, in the shadows of North American history.” On Thursday, September 17, Al Cormier will offer a lecture entitled “How Salem Survived the Great Depression”. A dedi cated historian and chronicler of what has come before, Al will review life in Salem during the Depression years, 1929-1939, including a reminiscence about his own family life during that time. The final lecture of the series on Thursday, September 24th, will be presented by area resident, Sally Brillon. Opera Theatre of Weston Receives Grants

Opera Theatre of Weston (OTW) recently received two separate grants from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts in support of its eleventh annual “Opera for Kids Community Youth Programs”. The two grants, totalling $7,300 will help to support OTW’s school outreach performances of “The Little Prince”; “Storybook Opera Project” with Vermont teaching artist/choreographer Ashley Hensel-Browning in an educational fall touring program; and OTW’s “Young Apprentice Singers Program”. According to OTW Educational Director and CoArtistic Director, Lise Messier, “every year teachers tell us that OTW’s “Opera for Kids” programs have become an important extension of their music educational programs in shaping young, artistic minds. Elementary, middle and high school students say that when they grow up “they’d like to be in an opera!” Opera Theatre of Weston, a professional company member of OPERA America, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported in part by grants from the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts; the Vermont Humanities Council, Stratton Foundation, the Vermont Country Store, Sinex Education Fund, and the Horowitz Foundation.
