ADAPTIVE REUSE

The Re-incarnated Dwelling

The Reincarnated Dwelling is a project conversing between the fabric of old and new. This project is an attempt to narrate the strong prevalent history of this site through the medium of a curated exhibition. This place brings together a variety of activities which include a relocated exhibition- bringing in the sense of the city, a small cafe to get the local taste, a library that opens up to the contemplation zones and a museum with galleries promoting the regional art. Taking from Mandu’s design language and being sensitive about the use of materials becomes the base for this design. The extensive use of local stone, in completing the ruins, as gabion construction-draws from the exisitng time and palce. While the structure is taken care in metal, gabion becomes the outer membrane. The stone discusses the massy feeling one gets as soon as they enter. The two water bodies on site capture the essence of water in Mandu and cover the ‘pause points’ of the museum. The multiple bridges, pivoting the space, provide for the required connections along with giving the visitor a glimpse of the surrounding smaller structures. The experience closes, at the top of the observation tower, overlooking the other iconic structures. The building is treated as an exhibit and this project is an attempt to capture its multiple layers.

EXHIBITION DESIGN

The Assembeled EDGE

12

The Assebeled EDGE is a modular exhibition system which is entirely dismantalable and easy to assemble back. The time taken to assemble the entire module single handedly is 27 minutes on a clock. The grid has been derived by decoding a MC ESHER graphic. The modulation of grid and interpretation of the graphic, set a strong base for the modular system. Exhibition system was flexible in accomodating different types of exhibits. The dimension of the horizontal and vertical surfaces are based on the kind of exhibits. The exhibition works well in atleast 6 different types of circulation. The actual scale module has been prototyped to understand the functionality in real scenarios. The module was also tried and tested for an actual academic exhibition. The Modulation and interpretation of grids, to further develope a module that repeats itself and brings in the functionality required, to later resolve the module on life-size scale.

INSTITUTIONAL DESIGN

KHOJ The Institute

16

The Institute KHOJ, is a youth center where youth can gather and share ,and learn from eachother. The studio focused on space planning and the co-relation between different activities. interactive and open spaces made environment around friendly. A site with a lot of trees was given. without harming any tree the design flows within the pockets created by the cluster of the trees present. The transition from open-semi-covered-covered along with the flow of activities might intrigue a person to explore and hence meet new people or hear new conversations. A person coming alone will get to learn just by roaming around the center. It is a social place promoting gathering of like-minded people for healthy discussions.

18

Isometric view

The trees on site played a very defining role for the design. The entire institute was connected via overhead bridge and still manages to have small pockets of informal spaces. These informal spaces make room for open discussions and calm setting to promote those who think alike. 19

RETAIL DESIGN

WHAT - A flagship store for Scarlet Splendour, a fast growing luxury furniture brand ,with a international recognition, based in India. WHY - The exclusive ranges of Scarlet Splendour’s furniture collections require a befitting environment to lure people in and convincing them into making the investment, that can be enbaled by a falgship store at an exclusive location. WHERE - The proposed flagship store is envisaged in a landmark heritage building in Fort area, Mumbai. HOW - Characteristics of the built-form provide the required backdrop and so the design has been developed such that: • It ehnaces the architectural features of the building • Various props have been inserted to anchor the display of various collections • Props and partitions are inserted such that they allow in creating various zones • A warm welcoming space in front and discussion rooms in back are created • storefront becomes attractive from the street

STOREFRONT - The attraction point for potential customers of the brand. 21

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

AWAS The Boutique Home

Awas is located in Jaisalmer and is essentially a haveli converted into 3 micro-apartments along with an owners house and roof top cafe. The entire project is a source of income for a family but also gives the tourists a taste of traditional living and life in a fort. Jaisalmer has a strong context and designing complimenting the current culture and heritage ( context) was the aim. A thorough study of the city and its surrounding was done before starting the design proces. The idea was of interlocking spaces. To see ,at a go, the entire space while hiding some portion. ‘Jhoola’ or the swing is a constant element in all 4 residencial spaces. This element sits well with the overall setting and brings in a pinch of playfulness in the rather extra-oridnary spaces. The treatment of arches was looked at with great potential to detail the spaces and highlight the architectural features. Patterned flooring made some compact spaces look big and vice versa. The roof top over looked a scenic view of the city and hence became an attraction point for outsiders and a gathering space for people living in the haveli.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH WORK

• THESIS 2020

Design Language & Detailing

Aim: To understand if detail can be a part of the design language by looking at the aspects of materiality and space- making elements. Objectives: • To identify the crucial elements of space-making through pre- established parameters. • To synthesis parameters that identify the crucial elements of design language and further deconstruct them to record their impacts in the built. • To establish and identify relationships between the materiality and the language of space. • To find the impacts of detail on the design language of a space. Abstract: Built space, a composition of many elements, discusses a language by either repeating or translating a common thread in its different layers of expression. The study’s objective is to synthesize the parameters leading to the identification of elements that define the language of space. All elements partly, if not entirely contribute to the language. The research further narrows down to recognise whether a critical detail can become the identity of the project/ building. The detail can be disjunct or syncretic with the built specific to its context. The theory of part to whole is applied to build relationships between the detail and the built. The study builds a relation between the materiality and language of the detail. 30

IIM Ahmedabad

BRTS Bus Module Ahmedabad

For the particular study around IIM Ahmedabad one can say that what lingers in the memories is the scale and the light quality of the built. The building predominantly uses a single material i.e, brick (old campus) and concrete ( new campus). The material enhances the scale of the built but while not letting the building weigh upon you. The material also narrates in the most subtle way the time they were built in. The old campus is an abstraction of the city in which the building is situated.

For the particular study around BRTS Bus stand Module, the most impactful observations were regarding its functioning and the intent behind its purpose. It was a module that had to cater to the mass without actually weighing on them.

The material is justified by the context, the context being justified by the elements and the elements justified by the details. This surprisingly also remains the order in which one notices the built spaces.

The context/ intend is justified by the elements, the elements justified by the details and the details by the material. The materiality and the detailing can also be weighed equally for this case-study.

One of the reasons could be the abundance of the material that creates the impact on the visitor. However the elements and the details also contribute in underlining the impact created by the look and feel of the particular chosen material.

The amount of time spent in the space is very little and hence to register everything in a go is not possible. The module is such that everytime you go you can notice a different aspect about it.

CONTEXT

Both the use of materials and the detailing has been a resultant of achieving a modern look for the buildings. The elements of space-making are designed with a very defined and specific purpose of achieving a particular goal i.e, to achieve transparency in design.
