Too much art. Too much music. Too much photography. Too many models. Too many actors. Too many movies. Too many magazines. Too many restaurants. Too many critics. Too many designers. Too many curators. Too many DJs. Too many doctoral candidates. Too many lawyers. Too many politicians. Too many rich people. Too many religions. Too much weather. Too many wars. —from http://magnificentruin.com/ The above quote, which I tend to sympathize with, implicates me and Underdogs in a number of ways. Underdogs is a “magazine” dedicated to “art” and “photography,” of which I am the “curator” and “designer.” No doubt, Underdogs and I belong to the categories of the “too much!” When I think more deeply about this quote, I wonder about the meaning of “too much.” With the popularization of the internet and digital photography, we produce and share more photos than we did before. But when does “more” become “too much?” It seems clear to me that if I enjoy something, I do not experience more of it as too much. On the other hand, if I dislike something, more of it—or sometimes even just the smallest amount of it—is too much for me. I enjoy producing Underdogs, and as long as I find new photography that I enjoy—which happens continually and shows all signs of continuing indefinitely—I intend to produce this magazine. There is a possibility this might result in “too much”—photography, magazine issues, or something else—for someone. If so, I can understand. One part of my motivation for producing Underdogs, and perhaps the lesser part, is to respond to what I see as the “too much” of other photography magazines that do not share my style or interests. When it comes to my ability to recognize the good in all forms of artistic expression, I confess I am no saint! Still, I do not think these reflections get to the heart of the quote. It should be expected that people will differ on what they find enjoyable and unenjoyable. What I ultimately find humbling about the quote is that it reminds me that being recognized as a “curator” or a “designer,” or as a producer of “art,” “photography,” or a “magazine,” is not an intrinsic good. I myself am reluctant to use terms such as “curator” or “designer” due to what I perceive as their inflation, but I have yet to find an alternate way to simply describe what I do. It may be the ability to recognize the good in others’ works, to the extent we are able, rather than the desire to validate our own work, is what most deserves a title. I will keep these thoughts close to my consciousness as I continue to work on and produce Underdogs.
