CONSUMERISM & STORAGE: MATERIAL OBESITY Research

Master Thesis Project Material Obesity, a Matter of Time. Master of Design (M.Des.) Research Program in Contextual Design. Design Academy Eindhoven, 2011. The following mentors were involved in the project process: Gijs Bakker, Louise Schouwenberg, Gijs Assman, Scott Burnham, Joost Grootens and Koen Kleijn. Abstract Mankind is suffering from ‘Material obesity’. We are consuming faster than we are able to get rid of things. Massive amounts of colourful nothing, clothes, books and other media end up on shelves and in closets without ever having been read or used. Storage is the temporary death of the object. Are we aware of our own time in relation to objects? Is there still a chance to bring the lifeless stuff back to life? Publication 2011. Article on Planned Obsolescence. Valdés Marín, I. (2011) Re-Planning the Planned Obsolescence, in: Volume #27 (Aging: Fight or Accept + Trust Design #1), pp.22-26. Link to the publication.

CONSUMERISM & IDENTITY: PARANOID AESTHETICS Brainstorming

The ladder is a symbol of communication between the spiritual and physical aspects of the self, or between the true self and the ego. Symbolically, it is the tool in which we lean on to achieve our ambitions, and as it is portable it will allow us to achieve them in different context. The steps represent the next level in which we project our paranoid self.
