Bessemer Blast 2013 set for June 27 to July 4

BESSEMER — Bessemer is celebrating it’s 25th annual Fourth of July festival, an eight day extravaganza of small-town fun, ending with the “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks display at 10 p.m. on Thursday July 4. Events kick off on June 27 at 4 p.m. with a recitation of the Declaration of Independence on the Gogebic County Courthouse steps. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. there is a spaghetti dinner at the Bessemer American Legion Post 27. At 7 p.m. the fourth annual Tree of Honor lighting ceremony will take place in the Pocket Park. Thursday also marks the beginning of the poker run, geocaching, and 50/50 sales. On Friday June 28 at 4 p.m. local businesses and organizations are cooking up fish fries. Also at 4 p.m. is the second annual water balloon toss, followed at 5 p.m. by the second annual outdoor war

Lip Synching is also at 5 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a children’s dance, followed by a teen dance from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The 25th annual Hometown Run and 4th annual Tot Trot start at 8:30 Saturday morning, at Bessemer City Hall. From 9-2 there is a craft and vendor day at the Sophie Street lot across from Abelman’s, as well as the second annual kids games in the pocket park. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. the Bessemer Lion’s Club will be serving a chicken dinner, and at 5 p.m. is the second annual five pound burger challenge in the VFW parking lot. Karaoke with the P.O.E.T.s starts at 8 p.m. at J.J.’s Yale Bar. Sunday June 30 events begin at 7 a.m. with the Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast in the St. Sebastian school gym. IRON COUNTY WATERFALLS

Roaring rivers add to sights, sounds of nature

Iron County, Wis., offers some spectacular views at dozens of waterfalls. Many are located off–the beaten path, unspoiled by crowds. Play it safe around natural areas, use care and enjoy the falls from a safe distance. Here are some of the best ones: Superior Falls: 90 feet high on the Montreal River, at Lake Superior. Take Wisconsin 122 north of U.S. 2 4.2 miles, crossing the Wisconsin–Michigan border. Continue another .5 mile, then turn left on a gravel road, marked by Xcel Energy. Potato River Falls: 90 feet high on the potato River in Gurney. Head south from U.S. 2 on Wisconsin 169, 2.8 miles (through town of Gurney). Turn west on Potato River Falls Road, continue for 1.5 miles. Rustic picnic campsites available. Peterson Falls: 35 feet high on the east branch Montreal River in the Hurley area. Take U.S. 2 west

of Hurley for .6 miles to a gravel road at Ero Nasi Construction sign. Follow road straight eat; do not take any side roads. Continue for .3 mile and park at small turnaround. Follow foot path located on north side of parking area. One–quarter mile walk to falls. Upson Falls: 18 feet high on the Potato River in the Upson area. Take Wisconsin 77 west from Hurley into Upson. Turn north at Upson Town Park sign, then left at end of street. After crossing the river, turn left into Upson Town Park, Camping and picnic area available. Kimball Falls: 10 feet high on the west branch of the Montreal River in the Hurley area. Head west out of Hurley on U.S. 2 for 3 miles, turn south (left) on Park Road and continue .2 mile. Turn west (right) on Town Park Road. Cross the one–lane bridge to enter the park just below the falls.

BLACK RIVER HARBOR — Black River Harbor and Recreation Area, the only Great Lakes harbor administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is located on Lake Superior, 15 miles north of Bessemer. The harbor has services for day and transient boaters, including several dock-side picnic tables. Scenic hiking trails through old-growth hemlock and hardwood forests and five waterfalls make it one of our favorite scenic stops around Lake Superior. In 1904, County 519 to the harbor was a wagon road from Bessemer to Lake Superior. It was repaired last summer by the Gogebic County Road Commission. The park includes a picnic area, playground, pavilion, campground and sandy beach, in addition to a bridge that extends over the Black River, which contains fish that migrate from the lake. The campground has 40 wooded campsites on a bluff overlooking Lake Superior. There is a dump station and fresh water. Hiking trails lead to the harbor park and beach. There are dozens of fishing boats at the harbor and charter services are available for pursuing salmon and trout by trolling.

Hurley celebrates its rich heritage

HURLEY — Hurley’s Festival Italiano, featuring plenty of good food and musical entertainment, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31 in downtown Hurley. A craft fair and flea market is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps will perform and there will be live music outdoors, food booths and kids’ games, including a spaghetti-eating contest. Ski flying jump offers adventure ride to vast overlook

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — The Copper Peak Adventure Ride provides a unique experience. It involves an 800-foot chairlift ride to the top of the hill, and an 18-story elevator ride to the main observation deck near the top of the world’s largest ski flying platform. From the main observation deck, or from the very top of the ski structure, one can overlook more than 2,500 square miles of the Lake Superior basin and see a flyer’s perspective of what it takes physically and mentally to strap on a pair of eight-foot skis, accelerate to 65 mph down the 469-foot inrun, and with a leap of faith, soar more than 600 feet down to the bottom of the hill. The view from atop Copper Peak is untainted by development. On a clear day it is possible to see 85 miles across Lake Superior to northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. One can observe such historic landmarks ad the Apostle Islands (40 miles to the northwest), Isle Royale (80 miles north-northeast), the Porcupine Wilderness State Park (25 miles northeast), the Gogebic-Penokee Range (to the south) and downhill ski area. Fall color, as viewed from Copper Peak, can contend with any place in the world. It usually peaks around the last week in September and/or the first week in October, when the chairlift is mot often ridden. Copper Peak is a registered Michigan historic site and a member of the Western Upper Peninsula Heritage Trail Network. The network contains some 70 of the most unique, scenic and historic sites in the western counties of the Upper Peninsula.

Bluegills, muskies, walleyes await anglers

GILE, Wis. — The expansive Gile Flowage offers a variety of fishing opportunities, from bluegills to monster muskies. There are four boat landings on the Montreal River Flowage that is controlled by Xcel Energy. OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST

Plenty of trails for hiking, biking, riding

The Ottawa National Forest offers over 1 million acres of fun. Known as “Waterfall Country,” the Ottawa’s beauty truly has to be seen to be believed. With five waterfalls easily accessible in the Black River Harbor Falls Trail area south of Bessemer alone, there are more than 20 waterfalls to enjoy. More than 196 miles of walking and backpacking trails allow for touring the area, with options for every skill level. Many of the designated trails are also open to mountain bikes, ATVs, ORVs, snowmobiles and horses. Careful sharing of trails is a must. Camping is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Twelve campgrounds beckon from the forest. The Ottawa contains over 500 named lakes and nearly 2,000 miles of rivers and streams. The Michigan trout season runs from the last Saturday in April until Sept. 30. Canoeing, kayaking, hunting and mountain biking are other attractions in the Ottawa. The Ottawa National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Ironwood, Iron River Ranger District Office and Ottawa Visitors Center in Watersmeet are fully accessible. Other district offices in Bessemer, Kenton, and Bergland are partially accessible.

The Ottawa Visitor Center is at the junction of U.S. 2 and U.S. 45 in Watersmeet. It features exhibits, a nature trail, a film presentation on the Ottawa every half hour daily, and special free programs every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. beginning May 30. Trails lead to nature-filled wonderland

IRON COUNTY — The Turtle Flambeau Scenic Waters Area encompasses 195 islands on a 14,000-acre flowage and is located southwest of Mercer. Camping opportunities abound, with 60 campsites available on a first-come, first-serve basis. These are accessible only by water, and there is no registration or fee for use of these sites. Five trails provide opportunities to hike, bike, snowshoe, back-country cross country ski and hunt. The Hidden Rivers Nature Trail is the only one that’s wheelchair friendly, and it is 2 miles long. The other trails include Big Island, Deadhorse, Little Turtle and Wilson Hills. The Little Turtle Trail is famous for bird watching, since it guides visitors through the only open prairie in Iron County. Birds found include bald eagles, osprey, loons, black terns, merlins, trumpeter swans and more

than 150 others. Other wildlife to be seen, if you are patient, include deer, bear, bobcat, timber wolves and moose. The flowage is known for its walleye, although crappie, muskie, and smallmouth bass may also be angled. Lake of the Falls county park is a good place to fish from shore. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular ways to tour the water and islands, with a voluntary quiet area between the narrows near Blair Lake upstream to the property boundaries near the confluence of the Bear and Manitowish Rivers. Six boat landings provide access to the water. If kayakers are looking for a wilder ride, they can enjoy the white water rapids of the Flambeau River, Turtle River, Manitowish River or Bear River. Area courses offer variety of challenges

Golfing the courses on the Gogebic Range is an excellent way to spend a summer day. From the panoramic views from the Skye course on Whitecap Mountains near Iron Belt to the 18 holes at the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet, there are plenty of tree-lined challenges for golfers of all levels. The Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood (906-932-2525) offers 18 holes on a mostly flat layout, with plenty of interesting holes that offer a variety of options. Perhaps the signature hole is the dogleg par four No. 14, guarded by deep bunkers on both sides. A steeply sloped green adds to the challenge. The long par 5 finishing hole, with a green that can be viewed from the dining area of the clubhouse, is another favorite. At the Eagle Bluff Golf Club in Hurley (715-561-3552), the sloped greens are a challenge and the back nine can be brutal under windy conditions. Still, there are plenty of short holes that present birdie opportunities following accurate drives. The toughest hole is the par four No. 11, which doglegs right. It takes a healthy drive to get a look at the green and keeping the ball in play off the tee can be tough. Five is a good score on the 420-yard hole. Boulder Creek, north of Bessemer (906-9329066), offers nine holes suitable for outing such as scrambles. There’s a driving range and a beautiful creek running through the course. The Skye course (715-561-2227), offers four or

five tees on every hole, making it as tough as a championship course or easier for senior players. Watersmeet’s Lac Vieux Desert (906-358-0303) course, with its blue grass fairways, is right next to the casino. The back nine is as challenging as any course in the area. Tahoe Lynx near Mercer (715-476-0050), offers nine holes in a wooded setting. Other courses include the Ontonagon Golf Club, the Mellen Country Club and the Chequamegon Bay course in Ashland.

SYLVANIA WILDERNESS

Quiet camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing await

WATERSMEET — Seven miles east of Watersmeet is 18,327 acres of camping, fishing, hiking and canoeing called Sylvania Wilderness and Recreational Area. There are 34 named lakes in an old growth forest, with a wide range of wild life including threatened and endangered plants and animals. Camping is by permit only at either the 50 wilderness camp sites or the 48 sites at the Clark Lake campground, which is accessible by automobile. To obtain a permit, visit the Sylvania Entrance Station, or call 877-444-6777. Camp sites are

limited to six people. Amenities include picnic tables, a boat ramp, toilets, drinking water and parking. The recreation area has a day-use building, hot showers, and carry-down boat landings, as well as a swimming beach. No cans, bottles, styrofoam, or non-burnable food or beverage containers are allowed. Containers of fuel, insect repellant, medications, toiletries and reusable plastic containers are permitted. No bicycles are allowed, and dogs are only permitted if on a sixfoot leash. They are not allowed at the Clark Lake beach.

Loon Capital of the Northwoods

MERCER — Big things are taking place this summer in the Loon Capital of the Northwoods. Throughout the summer, Mercer has numerous events planned to keep everyone entertained.

Fourth of July The day starts with the annual Run for a Vet race on Mecca Trail, starting at 7 a.m. The event continues with a parade through downtown Mercer, as well as a picnic and fireworks. The theme of this year’s parade is Claire D’ Loon’s Summer Vacation, paying homage to the towns loon statue. The parade features children scrambling to grab candy and colorful and creative floats. After the parade, the party continues at Carow Park where there is a swimming beach on Grand Portage Lake, shelter for picnics and updated restrooms. To complete the evening, the Mercer Volunteer Fire Department lights off fireworks at dusk over the water to end the celebration with flare.

Loon Day For over 25 years, Mercer has celebrated Loon Day on the first Wednesday in August. This year, the event takes place on Aug. 7. Some 200 artists and crafters fill the street for two blocks, selling one-of-a-kind products. There’s also an overflow section of after-market vendors offering other items. There’s wearable art in fabric and beads, fine art, lathe-turned wood bowls and chainsaw-carved wood bears, lawn ornaments and indoor decor. The aroma of kettle corn and brats on the grill makes a mouth watering backdrop to the art. Around noon, residents and visitors of all ages give their best impersonation of the honored loon, with the crowd packed in tight, cheering their favorite loon call.

dle Weekend on June 8. The event kicks off with the seventh annual Lupine Junefest, featuring recreational bike rides of various lengths. The fest celebrates the wildflower that grows tall and thick along sunny roadsides.There is also chalk drawing and photo contests, food, music and more. The weekend also features the first ever Turtle River Canoe Races from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rugger’s Landing in Mercer. Throughout the summer, there are also pancake breakfasts, outdoor advocates sharing their expertise at library talks, a car wash by Lioness members in formal wear, fishing tournaments, pontoon boat wildlife tours and shops and restaurants to explore. Drum and bugle corps plays many venues

TRUMPETS CARRY THE TUNE

BESSEMER — The Bessemer American Legion Post 27 has had a drum and bugle corps for many years, according to quartermaster Pearce Graham. After World War II, Marty Lamereaux took over in the 1950s, so the name Marty’s Goldenaires was taken in his honor. In the mid ‘60s, the group stopped marching. In 1976 they started back up, under Joe Bonavetz and Myron Re. This year there are 58 members and they are still recruiting. “We are smaller than in previous years, but we will be strong,” said Pearce. Tom DeCarlo is the oldest member, at 87, and the youngest member is 16. The director is Don Pitrone, assisted by Dustin

Pitrone. Much of their music is standard patriotic melodies, with an occasional big band number or oldtime rock ‘n’ roll tune thrown in from time to time. The season for the Goldenaires usually begins during the second week of June. They’ll head to Muskyfest in Hayward on June 23. The corps generally has 20-25 performances through the summer, including all area nursing homes. Marty’s is a staple of the Wakefield, Bessemer, Marenisco and Ramsay Fourth of July celebrations, and will play in Two Harbors, Minn., on July 5. Marty’s will also play at their annual picnic on Aug. 24 or 25 at Bluff Valley Park in Bessemer — a fundraising event for the group.

MINERS MEMORIAL PARK

Heritage Park includes trail for hiking, biking

IRONWOOD — It’s summertime and Ironwood’s Miners Memorial Heritage Park lends itself well to the season. The park is owned by the city of Ironwood and managed by the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park, a group created to promote, maintain and create the park within the mining areas of Ironwood. The park is a 167-acre rustic area in the center of the city, encompassing former iron ore mining locations, locally known as the Caves area. The park overs 5.7 miles of trails for walking, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and skiing. The discovery of these mines resulted in the establishment of the city in the latter part of the 19th century. The last iron ore mine in Ironwood closed in 1966. The park is dedicated to those who toiled underground to work these mines. In July 2010, the city

commission created the park at the request of the FMMHP. The group works to improve trails, signage and other features of the park. The park encourages visitors to learn about and respect the mining heritage of the area and provides four-season exercise and recreational venues. Non-motorized trails will be used for activities, including hiking, biking, running, walking, skiing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, while providing safe corridors between many locations within the city and the opportunity for regional trail connections. MEMORIAL DAY ATV RALLY Iron County hosts annual ride

The 28th annual Memorial Day Weekend ATV Rally in Iron County is set for May 23-27. Co-sponsored by the Hurley and Mercer Area chambers of commerce, this year’s event promises to be an adventure — some weekend rides for participants, along with fun-filled time for spectators. Iron County offers 200 miles of trails with access to many scenic areas including waterfalls, breathtaking views of Lake Superior, the Penokee Mountains and more. Registration for the event will be held Thursday at both the Hurley and Mercer chamber offices. Friday’s ATV parade down Hurley’s historic Silver Street will kick off the annual event. The parade begins at 6 p.m. Line-up for floats will begin at 5 p.m., along the west side of Fifth Avenue. Long weekend celebration includes music, food, fun

ONTONAGON — The 56th annual Labor Festival Celebration in Ontonagon is slated for four days Friday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 2. Many of the familiar activities are again on the bill, but other new events are being planned, according to co-chairmen Bill Chabot and Jan Tucker. A community picnic, dance, Maxwell Street Day, free antique appraisals, auto show, 5K and 10K run sponsored by Aspirus, a parade featuring five bands, community festival and kiddies parade are just some of the events. SAXON HARBOR

Boat dock, campground, picnic area, beach offered

SAXON, Wis. — Boating season heats up in May and doesn’t end until well into the fall at Saxon Harbor on Lake Superior. From small crafts in the spring to big trolling boats in the summer, there are plenty of ways to get out on the big water to fish for trout and salmon. The harbor was reconstructed a few years ago to provide more berths for boats and the major project by the Iron County Forestry Commission in 2012 was the construction of a new pavilion in the park. There are 90 boat slips for seasonal rental and numerous transient slips available. Three boat landings are available and the Saxon Harbor Boating Club operates a boat-lift for the large trolling boats. Water and electricity are available to boaters, as well pump-out and gasoline facilities. There are also showers and a fish cleaning station building. The Saxon Harbor campground has 32 electrical sites and 11 tent sites, including five rustic walk-in sites on picturesque Parkers Creek and five lakeside tent sites.

All sites have firepits and picnic tables. The sandy swimming beach is a short walk from the campgrounds. Day use parking is allowed for a $3 fee. Seasonal park stickers cost $15 for Iron County residents and $20 for non-residents. Reservations can be made by contacting the Iron County Forestry Department at 715-561-2697 or Saxon Harbor Boating Club at 715-893-2242. The 2013 boat slip rates vary, based on both lengths and slip positions. Camping costs $20 per day at all electrical sites and $13 per day at tent sites. The weekly rate is $120 at electrical sites and $75 per week at tent sites. Upper campground rental costs $335 per month. Pavilion rental costs $50 per day or $100 per day for the pavilion and kitchen. The daily boat use fee for trailered boats is $5 and it’s $30 for a seasonal sticker. Transient docking costs $1 per boat foot per night. All pets must be leashed at all times and fireworks are not allowed.

SAXON, Wis, — The Iron County Fair in Saxon returns for its 86th edition Aug. 2-4. Billed as a good old country fair, there are activities and exhibits for all ages, from carnival rides and a mud run to a pie auction on Sunday afternoon. The fair will again be part of the Iron County Heritage Festival, which packages many events under one umbrella in late July and August. The fair has returned to its roots and that is reflected in an antique tractor show that is a highlight of Sunday events. Friday night also features an ATV pull. WAKEFIELD — Wakefield is well-known for its Fourth of July celebration, and it’s one you won’t want to miss. The Wakefield Fireworks Committee “Picnic in the Park” will be July 3 at the new pavilion at Eddy Park, followed that evening by the fireworks over Sunday Lake. The annual Sunday Lake Run kicks off the Fourth of July at 8 a.m. Runners take one 2.8-mile lap around the lake. LITTLE GIRL’S POINT — LIttle Girls’ Point provides plenty of beach along Lake Superior to spread out and enjoy the day. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has agreed to provide $20,000 for Gogebic County to continue dredging nearby Oman’s Creek this year. The Gogebic County Forestry and Parks Commission has agreed to assist the MDNR, on a trial basis, by operating and maintaining the landing site for the 2013 boating season, ensuring public access to Lake Superior for small boats at the creek north of Ironwood. MUSIC IN THE PARK

Ontonagon Township Park hosts music festival

WHAT STARTED AS A SMALL FAMILY GATHERING HAS GROWN INTO AN EVENT

ONTONAGON — An event which started with just a few families camping at the Ontoagon Township Park and enjoying music has turned into a major summer event in Ontonagon. Music in the Park will be held July 13, with 12 acts offering 13 hours of music. There will be a craft fair and food, as well. Last year the event drew 600 people to the park on the shore of Lake Superior. This will be the fourth annual event. Bob Burrows has seen the program grow from a simple weekend of visiting with family and a few friends, to a major entertainment event in Onton-

agon. He said performers this year come from as far away as Chicago. Members of the band Greenstone were friends of the Burrows family and they met at the park every year to visit and play music. Soon, nearby campers would bring their chairs over to the Burrows camper. It was not long before campers would ask when the families planned to have their outing again. It grew so large that Burrows and others decided to open the fun to the community. The craft fair, sponsored by the Ontonagon Chamber of Commerce, will start at 11 a.m. with music from noon until 1 a.m.

Porcupine Mountain Music Festival set for Aug. 23-24

SILVER CITY — The Porcupine Mountains Music Festival will be held at the Winter Sports Complex located within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park on Aug. 23-24. Musical acts from over the country gather for the event which is held on the slopes of the Porcupine Mountains. More than 1,000 people attended last years concerts. Temporary, canopy-covered stages will be set up

at the base of the hill and several acres of open slope will be mowed and ready for your blankets and lawn chairs. Attendance is limited therefore a bad seat will not be found. Workshops will be conducted upon the event grounds and also inside the 20,000 square foot ski chalet. The restaurant located inside the ski chalet will offer a varied menu and will be open throughout the event.

18-day celebration includes parade, reunions, art

PARADE DOWN HURLEY’S SILVER STREET DRAWS A BIG CROWD

Iron County celebrates its heritage in a big way, including over two weeks of events, including parades, parties, golf outings, a marathon and even a county fair. The Iron County Heritage Festival runs from July 25 to Aug. 11 and gets started with the Hurley Quarterback Club’s Scramble Golf Tournament at Eagle Bluff, featuring 75 two-person teams on that Friday. As on Friday, the Iron County Historical Society will offer an open house, including a blacksmithing event. On Saturday, it’s a big day for the festival, including a parade down Silver Street, the Hurley Education Foundation open house and brunch and Distinguished Alumni and Friends award ceremony

and the Hurley High School Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony. To enter the 2 p.m. parade, contact the Hurley Chamber office. There will also be a walking tour of Hurley’s tavern district that day. Following the parade, the Iron County Memorial Building Heritage Committee will be hosting the All Class Reunion. The location will be announced at a later date. The annual Loon Day celebration in Mercer will also draw a huge crowd on Aug. 7.
