KRISHNAPATNAM PORT - AN OPPORTUNITY

KRISHNAPATNAM PORT COMPANY LTD.

India’s maritime trade and its percentage share in the world market is growing at a rapid pace. Leading the foray into international markets are the bulk commodities and containerised trade. The unprecedented growth triggered a demand for strategic port capacity. Such capacity is expected to sustain trade at lower costs, thus increasing India’s share in international markets. The Indian major ports stand a testimony to this as all of them are showing larger and larger throughputs year after year.

Krishnapatnam Port Company is one more feather in the cap of the CVR Group of Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd., one of the top Multidisciplinary Engineering and Construction Companies in India who earlier successfully completed challenging infrastructure projects in ports like Kandla, Vizag, Tuticorin, New Mangalore and others like Delhi Metro, make up Water System for NTPC (Simhadri Thermal Power Station), Intake System for CPCL (Chennai Petroleum Company Limited) etc.

State-of-the-art facilities to accommodate deep drafted vessels to provide high quality service at an attractive price to port users. Krishnapatnam Port Company is developing a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) close to the Port. This will add to the envisaged traffic volumes and increase the opportunities for trade and industry around the port.

The Krishnapatnam Port Company has been awarded the 50 year BOST concession by the Andhra Pradesh Government to develop the existing minor port into a modern deep-drafted multipurpose Port.

Krishnapatnam, once an anchorage port is now destined to emerge as one of the fastest growing privately owned ports on the East Coast of India, located on the banks of Khandaleru Creek System. The unique feature of this port is its amenability to permit zoning of cargo into dry bulks, general cargo, liquid cargo and containers, so that port operations cause least pollution, at

Krishnapatnam Port is emerging as the port of choice for all cargos originating from and destined to the Southern and Central Andhra Pradesh, Southern Karnataka and Northern Tamil Nadu.

the same time permitting vast scope for expansion. This all weather port having a depth of 15 meters below CD initially (for ships upto 1,00,000 DWT) can go upto -19.00 meters to accommodate cape size vessels in future (ships upto 2,00,000 DWT). Such a large scale flexibility of growth in future throws challenges as well in ensuring the desired safety of navigation and cargo handling operations. Judicious layout of the approach channel and the breakwaters is the key for least wave disturbance and siltation inside the basin and at berths against waves approaching from critical directions. The layout thus conceptualized was optimized in Mathematical and Physical Models by some of the best laboratories in the world. The findings would also be fortified by ship simulation techniques and study of moored ship behaviour at the berths.

As maritime trade grows… India needs more port infrastructure Iron ore exports, coal imports, container and other traffic are growing at a hair-raising pace in Indian ports. The Bellary-Hospet region in the Krishnapatnam hinterland has struck a growth rate of 35% in Iron Ore Exports. Addition of Power Plants and Cement Plant Expansions close to Krishnapatnam has a potential demand of about 10 million MT of coal by 2008 with sustainable growth. Krishnapatnam has a total cargo potential of about 20 million mt per annum in the short run and over 90 million mt per annum in the long term.

This unprecedented growth in maritime trade has triggered a demand for additional port capacity, generally perceived as already in short supply. The iron ore exports from the Bellary-Hospet region, for instance, have had to look at Goa and Chennai Ports in search of: l
