Intellectual Property Rights Intellectual Property refers to creations of the mind - inventions and artistic works, symbols, names, images and designs used in commerce. Intellectual property is divided into two categories: l

The Need Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) has been used by the developed countries as a business tool to achieve economic gains in the world of competitive technological game. It is acquiring greater significance in business world of today's' Indian scenario. With the opening up of the Indian economy, Indian companies have to compete not only within the country but the overseas giants. India is a signatory to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Trade Related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement, a part of WTO. Accordingly, India has complied with its obligations by amending the existing legislation with respect to IPRs. It is a welcome sign to note that, in India, awareness about the intellectual property rights is on the increase. Worldwide demand for patent rights is on the rise and as per Trilateral Statistical Reports, the global patent filing has increased from 1 million in 1990 to 8 million in 1999. The number of PCT applications filed by developing countries increased from 1.25% in 1997 to 5.17% in 2001. India has filed over 300 PCT applications in 2001. In the post 2005 WTO regime, protecting IPR would be the key to compete and sustain in business. A Unique Initiative Confederation of Indian Industry, Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Center and Govt. of Andhra Pradesh have taken a unique initiative to establish IPR facilitation Cell in the state primarily to create a strong IPR base in the state, to enhance the quality of Invention, Innovation and fine tune the institutional & Policy issues to increase the number of patents filed from the state. This would boost investors' confidence in the long run through better Innovative Corporate Culture. The Patent Facilitation Cell of TIFAC and Patent Information System, Nagpur provides technical support to this cell. Municipal Solid Waste - Indian Scenario l
Garbage every where - Around 50 million tonnes of MSW is generated daily in Urban areas of the country and it is growing at an alarming rate of 5% every year in which around 30% MSW are not collected and remains on the streets at some places.

We spend a lot - Civic Bodies spend Rs. 1000 - Rs. 1500 to collect, transport and finally dispose each tonne of garbage in which transportation cost accounts for more than one third and disposal cost abnormally low to 5% of total cost

Land is exhausting - Landfill sites have got specific life of 5 to 15 years and hence acute shortage of costly landfill sites is predominant.

Health Hazards - The open dumping is resulting in severe environment deterioration in respect of ground water contamination, air pollution and has been causing diseases due to bacteria and Pathogens.

Statutory Requirements - Arising out of the hearing in PIL 888 / of 1996, the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India has taken necessary steps and directed civic bodies to implement "Setting up of waste processing and disposal facilities by December 31, 2003.

Initiatives - 5% of Garbage in the country are being processed for producing compost, 1% for energy recovery and rest (94%) is dumped on open land un-processed.
