ahana reports: Based on the order of Tehran’s Prosecutor, all families of political prisoners can only visit their loved ones by phone or in visitation booths (behind glass windows and phone conversations) from now on. Per Kalameh Reports, although regular prisoners are allowed to have in person visitation with their families but political prisoners will not be granted such privilege. Hereafter, the families are only allowed visitation in person with the prisoners by a special order from the Prosecutor. It is being said that the reason for such measures is to control and prevent the statements and letters that has been coming out of the prisons.

T

of Iran’s president has made a rare public call for producing the “special weapons” that are a monopoly of a few nations, which represents a veiled reference to nuclear arms. The Associated Press on Monday obtained a copy of a book written by the spiritual adviser, Ayatollah Muhammad Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, in which he wrote that Iran should not deprive itself of the right to produce these “special weapons.” Iran’s government, as well as its clerical hierarchy, has repeatedly said that the country is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons, as the United States and other Western nations suspect. The

Nations

imposed a fourth round of sanctions in response to Iran’s refusal to halt uranium enrichment, which it maintains is only for a civilian nuclear energy program, but which could conceivably be used to produce material for nuclear weapons. The new United Nations sanctions call for an asset freeze of 40 additional companies and organizations in Iran, including 22 involved in the nuclear program or developing ballistic missiles. Mr. Mesbah-Yazdi’s hard-line views have had a strong effect on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, who has shown him more respect than he has any other senior cleric.

ccording to Human Right Activists News Agency (HRANA), Over 900 people were arrested on the one year anniversary of protests against the fraudulent Iranian Presidential election. According to HRANA reporters, at least 300 of the detainees are women and their families are unaware of their situation. Security forces prevented gatherings by families of the detainees by closing “Shohada ye Jandarmery” and “Kargar Jonoubi” intersections located in front of the Tehran police headquarters. It is worth mentioning that so far the family of at least 15 women detainees who did not have identification cards at hand were asked to submit their documents. The families of the male

detainees were told by authorities to refer to the security police office today to inquire on the situation of their loved ones. This morning at 2:00am, 30 detainees ranging from 20-25 years old were driven with a van to Enghelab Square and released there.

ctivist gathered on June 12, 2010 to mark one-year since the disputed election. The event host, Iranian Progressive Youth, organized “Cycle 4 Iran” — a walk & bike-a-thon through Amsterdam. Participants wore t-shirts demanding the release of Iran’s prisoners of conscience, attached posters to the back of their bikes, backpacks, shirts, painted themselves green, and biked alongside a mini-mobile billboard (also being biked through the city!) highlighting Bahareh Hedayat. T

he results of the Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2010 suggest that the world has become slightly less peaceful in the past year. The GPI, which gauges ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarization in 149 countries, registered overall increases in several indicators, including the likelihood of violent demonstrations and perceptions of criminality. In some nations, an intensification of conflicts and growing instability appears to be linked to the global economic downturn in late 2008 and early 2009. This is the fourth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). It has been expanded to rank 149 independent states and updated with the latest-available figures and information for 2008-09. The index is composed of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from respected sources, which combine internal and external factors ranging from a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighboring countries and the level of respect for human rights. The average score for the countries surveyed in the 2010 GPI is 2.02 (based on a 1-5 scale), a slight rise (less at peace) compared with last year, when the average stood at 1.964.

W

ith the opening of FIFA Soccer World Cup in South Africa, “June 12” human rights group organized a campaign to draw attention to the plight of political prisoners in Iran by putting pictures of some of the prisoners on city buses in Johannesburg. Pictures of Behrouz Javid Tehrani, Mohammad Oliayaifard, Shiva Nazarahari and others were seen on city buses which are supposed to run in the city for at least a month. Since the opening of the games coincided with the anniversary of the controversial presidential election in Iran that has led to widespread protests and fierce government crack down, the “June 12” group decided to appear at the international event in South Afri-

ca with banners in support of the growing number of political prisoners languishing in Islamic Republic prisons. To draw attention to “human rights violations in Iran”, the group has also prepared a video clip of their presence in Johannesburg which was posted on You Tube. The “June 12” group is planning to stage demonstrations in front of the Islamic Republic embassies in 87 cities across the globe on the anniversary of June 12 elections of 2009. Iranian authorities have arrested scores of protesters in the past year to quell the turmoil which has gripped the country since the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last June.
