FORT WAYNE ATHLETICS Annual Report 2016-2017

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Fort Wayne Intercollegiate Athletics is to foster an environment of growth in the areas of academics, athletics, and social responsibility. Mastodon coaches, staff, and student-athletes work to enhance IPFW’s reputation by reaching for academic and athletic excellence. The Mastodon Academic Performance (MAP) Center provides on-going academic advising as well as support for career and personal development. MAP’s ultimate goal is supporting the accomplishment of a higher education degree.

THREE CORE VALUES

The Fort Wayne Department of Intercollegiate Athletics emphasizes three core values:

Academic Excellence:

Academic achievement is the first priority of our student-athletes.

Social Responsibility:

Student-athletes strive to become good citizens and better-rounded individuals by giving back to campus and our community with grass root-type of projects.

Athletic Intensity:

Student-athletes at IPFW have an opportunity to compete at the highest level of intercollegiate competition and are reminded to do so with good sportsmanship and the intensity of a champion as they represent themselves, their families and the University.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR “We are FORT WAYNE. We are MASTODONS.” was not just our student-athletes’ mantra last year; it has been the driving message to our entire Mastodon Athletics family. And together, we’ve had a strong year and look forward to building an even stronger future with a new campus identity ahead. Academic achievement has long been the first priority of the Fort Wayne Mastodons and last year was no different. Our student-athletes excelled academically, with 125 student-athletes named to the 2016-17 Summit League Honor Roll and 14-straight years of a combined 3.0 grade point average. In addition, nine teams earned perfect single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores highlighting our commitment to retention and graduation of the best and brightest. In competition, our student-athletes shined on the court, on the course, on the track, and on the field with dozens of Mastodons honored as players of the week by the Summit League and the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Our 14 teams each achieved significant growth milestones, including several student-athletes representing their respective national team in competition. Softball’s Maria Palmegiani was selected to the Canadian Junior Women’s National Team, Men’s volleyball’s Pelegrin Vargas participated in the Pan American Cup for Puerto Rico, and women’s basketball’s Anna Lappenküper played for U20 German National team over the summer.

Social responsibility is more than one of our core values, it is a way of life for our students who passionately give back to campus and the community in the form of volunteer work. Last year, our teams combined for a record 3,700 hours of service, partnering with organizations like Turnstone, Community Harvest Foodbank, the Vera Bradley Foundation, Fort 4 Fitness, and more. Four student-athletes took mission trips over the summer break – one to Tanzania and three to Ecuador. I am in awe of how committed our student-athletes are to making Fort Wayne great and the world a better place. On the business side, in addition to increased ticket and marketing revenue, we signed a groundbreaking new partnership with Under Armour, making the brand our official outfitter and supplier in an exciting deal that will impact all 14 sport programs. This move, along with proudly wearing “Fort Wayne” on our uniforms, has strengthened our athletics brand and reputation. I’m not only proud of the significant progress made last year, but excited about the future too. We are FORT WAYNE. We are MASTODONS.

Director of Athletics Fort Wayne Mastodons

CALHOUN’S CAREER NIGHT POWERS ‘DONS FLORIO RECEIVES AWARD TO 88-80 CIT WIN OVER BALL STATE March 15, 2017

Senior Brent Calhoun scored a career-high 27 points, 20 in the second half, as the Fort Wayne Mastodons defeated Ball State 88-80 at the Gates Center in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The contest was the inaugural Lou Henson Classic to honor the legendary New Mexico State and Illinois head coach. The ‘Dons took home a trophy for the victory and Calhoun was named the game’s MVP. He helped Fort Wayne erase a 41-34 halftime deficit after the ‘Dons trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening half. Fort Wayne took their first lead of the second half at the 9:12 mark on a 3-pointer by Bryson Scott. It was part of a larger 11-0 run that saw the ‘Dons go up by seven points. Ball State cut the deficit to two points with 2:32 remaining, but would never take the lead again after Scott’s trey. Calhoun earned his 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting. He should have known he was in for a big night when early in the contest he made his first career 3-pointer. Six Mastodons finished in double-digits. Mo Evans had 15 points with 12 assists. Bryson Scott totaled 13 24

points and nine rebounds. Kason Harrell, John Konchar and Xzavier Taylor each had 11 points. Konchar played all 40 minutes. Fort Wayne fended off a Ball State team that made 14 3-pointers. Ball State ends their season at 21-13. The ‘Dons improve to 20-12 for their second straight 20-win season. It is the first time as an NCAA Division I member and only the second time in program history the ‘Dons have won 20 games in back-to-back seasons. In the game the ‘Dons moved into first place all-time in program history in single-season scoring with 2,807 points. They passed the 2013-14 squad which scored 2,774 points.
