LONG-TERM THINKING FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH From wheelchair basketball to mud runs, from children’s archery to a 91-year-old track & field participant, the Iowa Games, and our affiliated events, have provided sports, recreation, health and wellness opportunities to Iowans of all abilities—for over 30 years. Our best brand is the Iowa Games, but it is the 34-member board of the Iowa Sports Foundation who powers the programs, events and challenges that attract more than 250,000 participants every year.

WHO WE ARE... IOWA SPORTS FOUNDATION The Iowa Games, a statewide Olympic-style competition, is the most well-known of the Iowa Sports Foundation events. COMPETITIVE OPPORTUNITIES

Iowa Renegade – Competitive Wheelchair Basketball Team ASI organizes a National Wheelchair Basketball Association sanctioned team that features Iowa-based athletes. The Renegades compete regionally and host an annual tournament in West Des Moines the first weekend in December. The Renegade practice weekly in Ankeny. Iowa Reapers – Competitive beep baseball team As a result of hosting the World Series of Beep Baseball in 2012, the Iowa Reapers were established. Beep Baseball is an adapted version of baseball for blind and vision impaired athletes. The season is comprised of a number of charity events in which the Reapers take on local businesses and groups. Adaptive Sports Iowa hosted the 2016 Beep Baseball World Series in Ames. Track and Field In 2016, ASI loaned 14 pieces of specialized track & field equipment to middle and high school athletes with physical disabilities across Iowa. Thanks to the ASI equipment, the 2016 State High School Track and Field Championships featured the largest field of wheelchair athletes in state history.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Adaptive Sports Iowa Cycling Team presented by Iowa Farm Bureau The 2016 ASI RAGBRAI team was comprised of approximately 55 individuals including volunteers, support crew, and cyclists to take on the seven-day trek across Iowa. After five successful years, the ASI team has become a part of the RAGBRAI culture and the Adaptive Sports Iowa brand is recognized amongst the thousands who take part in this event. 2016 marked the first time Iowa Farm Bureau was the title sponsor. Winter Ski Experience In collaboration with Adaptive Adventures based from Chicago, ASI offers an annual snow skiing event at Seven Oaks Recreation near Boone. This three day event presented opportunities for both local instructors to learn the adaptive equipment, as well as, physically disabled participants to experience the sport. ASI served 40 athletes with disabilities at this event. National Veterans Airgun Series New for 2016, Adaptive Sports Iowa partnered with Adaptive Sports USA to offer an adaptive airgun program. Supported through a grant from the VA, this new program introduces the sport of 10 meter airgun. This precision sport is a fantastic opportunity to affectively reach a new demographic of people given that airgun does not require a great deal of physical exertion but rather a focus upon breathing and fine motor skills. The program took place at Crossroads Shooting Sports in Johnston. Bowling Night The first Tuesday of the month, ASI athletes and families are welcome to bowl at Warrior Lanes in Waukee. Ramps are provided for those unable to handle the balls in a traditional manner.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS

Adaptive Sports on the Grand Concourse Adaptive Sports Iowa partners with the Iowa State Fair to provide a unique community outreach event. On the last Friday of the Iowa State Fair, ASI hosted a daylong event that features live demonstrations of a variety of adaptive sports programs. Special Olympics Iowa and Courage League Sports were invited to take part in the demonstrations. Community Education Events Throughout the year, ASI took part in community education and awareness events in an effort to recruit new athletes, expand public awareness of our mission, and represent the physically disabled community effectively. Such events include the Iowa State Fair, SCIA Adaptive Sports Clinic, Iowa Bicycle Summit & Expo and school assemblies. These events allow for ASI athletes to engage with the public, in a unique and meaningful way.

FUNDRAISING

Chair-ity Bowl 2016 marked the beginning of a new annual fundraiser. The Chair-ity Bowl is a fun, team bowling event that took place at Warrior Lanes in Waukee.
